    Nevermind sales haven’t been updated in a long time. Also, globally nevemind smashes Ten

      @@damnthewolves en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_albums something happened with Nirvana and RIAA certifications. They stopped updating for nevermind a long time ago. And SLTS has more views on UA-cam than all pearl jam combined. I think ten is an incredible album, but nevermind is perfection. And is one of the most successful albums of all times

    An album by a still functioning band, that came out 30+ years ago has outsold an album by a band that was together for 7 years and literally hasn't existed as a creative entity in 30 years? Wow. Crazy. I think this is what they call a "non-starter", or" false equivalency" guys. Nice shot though.

    Nirvana is excellent, don't get me wrong, but if Kurt wasn't murdered Nirvana never would have made it as a band and their popularity afterwards wouldn't be a tenth of what it is today

    Well yeah Pearl Jam was 10x more marketable than Nirvana. Nirvana was still the better and more important band and it’s not even close

      @@rubber_johnny911do you think? Nirvana seemed to be marketed pretty well (whether they wanted to or not is another matter!)?

    • @rubber_johnny911
      @rubber_johnny911 4 місяці тому +2

      @@damnthewolves for sure. i wouldn't argue that nevermind wasn't marketable. in the danny goldberg book one of the DGC execs was quoted saying something like "nevermind was a get the f out of the way album". meaning that it was so good, the label really just needed to print as many units as they could and basically hold on for dear life. nevermind changed everything in a way that no album ever has. it ended entire genres of music overnight. it can't be overstated how important that album was. but all of that said, nevermind was really the only nirvana release that was marketable on that level. after nevermind they released the b-side album incesticide. kurt wanted to do this but DGC wanted it even more. they wanted to release a nirvana album right before christmas 1992 to really cash in on the momentum. they tried to market it but it was way too raw for mainstream audience. then their next studio album, in utero was a disaster in the eyes of their label execs. even though its arguably the most pure representation of nirvana as a band, they hated that albini recorded it and the way it sounded, they hated that it didn't have any real radio friendly songs. and so the marketing for the album was really subdued. and it was reflected in sales compared to nevermind.
      add to that, kurt was a full blown world class junky by the time nevermind was reaching its peak. contrast all of that with pearl jam, who in conjunction with their label were very ambitious with selling albums, touring, promoting, etc. once kurt married courtney he pretty much just wanted to hide in his room and shoot up. he hated being around people, he hated doing any promotion and he cancelled shows/tours constantly.

      @@rubber_johnny911 thanks for the comment and info - I’m sure all if that is true about Nirvana around that time.
      Did Pearl Jam appear to push back against the mainstream and ‘selling out’ though with their (Eddie Vedder’s) refusal to release Black as a single or do a video and subsequent songs? Isn’t that why it ended with Dave Abbruzzese? Not to mention the whole Ticketmaster episode?

    • @rubber_johnny911
      @rubber_johnny911 4 місяці тому

      @@damnthewolves i wouldn't characterize pearl jam as sellouts. they're a great band who paved the way for a lot of musicians and for how big they are they've done things the right way. they treat the people who work for them great, with pay and benefits. honestly they're probably one of the best examples of how a band should navigate fame. i'm definitely not taking shots at them, i just believe nirvana is on a totally different level than any band before or after them in terms of the importance of their music and how it really changed everything. but i think these two bands had very different intentions and goals and PJs lended itself to be way more marketable. especially in terms of their music. again, nevermind singles were smells like teen spirit, comes as you are, in bloom and lithium. all of which were basically pop songs when stripped down. fast forward a couple years and in utero has one single, heart shaped box. go back and watch that video and listen to it. its so dark and against the grain especially for that time. jesus on the crucifix in a poppy field, a child in a klan robe. everything is shock value nowadays but looking back its actually really wild that the heart shaped box video was in constant rotation on MTV.

      Nirvana was the least interesting of the big four grunge era bands, IMO.
