Ireland pays artists basic income stipend in new pilot program

- Ireland has created a pilot program that is paying artists a basic income to create art. 2,000 artists were chosen to participate in a three year trial. NBC News' Meagan Fitzgerald reports.

Japan does this with their Masters of arts and crafts.

I hear that they are getting 17k a year. The things I could do as an artist with that. For a lot of jobs people are earning less than that and are working full time.
A "Citizen Dividend" - for everyone - would be so much more intelligent.

Artists will continue to starve, or like most art forms, only the top gets paid.
I have never cared one whit if the "starving artists" actually starve. Nobody has the right to force others to make their hobby a paying career. VERY few people are doing their dream job.

Knock yourself out.
My original point is that, no matter how innovative the program is, there will be those like yourself who have no value on art or anything that's not digging a ditch or nailing wood together . Some flavorless soul will come along and complain and have it dismantled.
Don't like art? Well don't look at art.
Want to live in a flavorless existence and think only of what's for supper after work, what's on Netflix, no deep thoughts? Go ahead.
Seems to me art brings Joy , and critical thought, and entertainment.
Seems everyone in this world is attracted to it, but most consider the effort frivolous, and want it badly but nobody wants to pay artists for it.
We know you don't 'care' if artists starve. They don't care that you don't...
You do you.... But thanks for dropping in long enough to prove my point.

@@FurtiveSkeptical We all have an obligation to do something useful; and "useful" is defined by others. If someone wants to slop paint on a canvas in their spare time, good for them. Maybe one out of ten thousand might actually get paid for it.
What it usually means is the middle class and wealthy artists proliferate as well as the wives of those that work full time to support them. Working class artists won't starve as such, but they'll just not have much time to make and exhibit their art, whatever that kind of art might be. Especially if that kind of art requires more time or materials.
@@wildmouse5888the UBI would be for everyone, not just artists. The rich get handouts of billions. UBI would cost less than that, and everyone would benefit from it.

This is just SO wrong! These "artists" need to learn the difference between a career and a hobby.
Dancers arent dancing in Broadway shows 7 days a week , every week or even 5 , bands and singers dont have gigs 7 nights a week , every week , actors arent acting/filming in a movie 8 hrs a day , 7 days a week every week , painters and sculptors dont work on , finish and sell numerous pieces every week . Very few artists can live just off the income from their craft , that doesnt mean it isnt a job/career . Artists need to be able to create and to be able to live while doing so , we NEED art .
@@shari9721 If you cannot pay your bills and support yourself with art then by definition you are NOT a professional artist. You are a professional at filling out forms to get taxpayer money.
@@wildmouse5888there’s a lot of jobs that don’t pay enough to support yourself. Depends on the situation. The arts can be very lucrative.
