Maybe to you newbies this seems like a waste of time. But in late 1992, living through this was epic. It’s still one of my favorite comic book stories/ events of all time!👍🏽
What exactly are you talking about? A cash cow effort (with the exception of Louise Simonson, the only person involved who seemed truly sincere in her desire to write a good story and pay respect to a character she clearly loves) to reignite interest in Superman with tactics akin to yellow journalism is hardly what I call something that proves Superman is THE MOST IMPORTANT,ICONIC,AND GREATEST SUPERHERO OF ALL TIME!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't get me wrong, I love the character, but what has made the character so endearing and such a powerful icon of inspiration for over 75 years can be found in the uttermost core essence of the character: Superman's moral fortitude. Some people see this as a negative aspect and view Superman as nothing but a mere boy scout, but that just goes to show the growing cynicism of a world in which the concepts of truth, justice and hope are increasingly being seen as the stuff of fairy tales. Wanna know why so many people disliked Man of Steel? This characteristic was seldom found in the film. In place of this was a more paranoid and distrusting character who has little to no faith in humanity until he has a discussion with a priest. Snyder and Goyer missed the point of the character entirely. The point was and has been for Superman to be a character that elevates the world around him and refuses to allow it to drag him down. New interpretations are fine, but ignorance of what makes the character the character and what separates him from other comic book superheroes is not.
@@stuckinthemiddle6851 You weren't paying attention to the video. The WHOLE Superman writing team were passionate about this story. They knew the weight and great responsibility they had in creating the death and resurrection of the greatest super hero ever created, and they rose to the challenge and delivered. Superman is about perseverance and altruism. He's the mythological, the human, and the hero. He is the ultimate adoption story. 10 years ago, Zack Snyder gave us that in Man of Steel. Superman is universal; many thing to many different people. He didn't earn becoming one of the most popular and recognizable symbols on the planet by being just one way, and the diversity reflects in his lore, and in that film. So many people "disliked" Man of Steel because they failed pay attention to the fact that this version was about Clark finding out about who he was and why he chose to become humanity's protector, instead of having be it written off as a matter of destiny.
I remember this and still have my copy. Also these artist writers wow talk about the love they have is incredible. This is what I live my job looks like
Wow, this is one of the stories that was big when i was growing up. Yet, I didn't have a deep appreciation for the event until after watching this video. Growing up reading comics like the Death and Return of Superman, made me realize ,at a young age, that comics is not this dumb entertainment format. Just like tv,novels, and movies, it's a format that can appeal to everybody. The movie industry is finally catching up to comics.
This event was so huge that news about it made it to newspapers here in Egypt. The Death of Superman was the biggest and most prolific death of a fictional character since Sherlock Holmes had his fateful encounter with Professor Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls in Conan Doyle's The Adventure of the Final Problem.
The Death and Return of Superman remains my favorite storyline from the comics around that time and is to this day. Great documentary with the original creators of the event.
I didn't even follow the Superman comics, but that cover of the tattered cape was so dramatic, even I remember that one. I never even read it, and I remember it, just because that image was so powerful and the impossible news that Superman dies...
The Death of Superman was so overly hyped as an 'event' that 1000s of people bought the comic thinking it would pay their kids way thru college but it and the 'Funeral for a Friend' and the "Reign of the Supermen' story arcs are not worth all that much. The non-comic buying people thought Supes was dead and would stay dead. The stories were good reading, but did anyone really believe Supes would stay dead?
My family and I had just moved, and we were hanging out with my aunt and uncle one afternoon and my cousin had Superman issue 75 and I didn’t know what it was until I saw the cover. And then reading it…it hit me. And as someone who had been brain fed on the Christopher Reeve movies this was something I hadn’t read in a long time or since then. Except Batman Knightfall. But even then, it’s Death of Superman for me.
This was an amazing documentary. This storyline was what got me back into comic-books, and I had just purchased Reign Of The Supermen this past weekend. I’d like for WB Home Video to take this two-part storyline and reissue it as one movie; similar to what they had done for the Batman/Dark Knight Returns animated films. And as a bonus, include the Superman/Doomsday movie and all of its special features, as a two-pack movie set.
Remember when you used to enjoy watching things online because you didn't have to watch commercials? Shoot. Now I watch t.v. to take a break from all the ads on youtube...
I am a die hard batman fan. However, I have so much more respect for the character of superman now. Definitely much harder to see situations in black and white than gray. I was only in like 3rd grade when all this went down so I guess I grew up not liking the king of boy scout type superheroes.
You call them morons, but what is your so called epic way he should go? Another thing, he wasnt a random monster, he was just a new monster. There was a build-up to the plot, thoroughly planned out and executed. Besides he had died before anyway, it was nothin new
They are making a documentary about it called "The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened". It was funded by a Kickstarter campaign. Should be coming out soon.
That's great! Whatever we can do to get kids reading comics, I'm in. I've been enjoying comics since before I could read because my dad is a DC fan. I think we as fans need to think more about all the kids who could be reading. There are some great kids' books but hardly any advertising or visibility. Most kids start reading because they enjoy the movies or animated shows too. I don't know if you have kids or nieces/nephews or what but now it's our turn to get the kids onboard.
It's stated in the Reign of the Superman storyline that Superman does in fact die in his battle with Doomsday. It was only years later that DC (specifically, Geoff Johns) decided to retcon his death into just being "weakened" or "comatose."
Love'd this story when it was published and "Reign" is probably my favorite of all time... But this documentary (done by Warner Brother's) doesn't tell more than one/fifth of the actual ramifications of this storyline. The version done by Max Landis provides a broader picture of what this event did to the industry.
the greatest most epic video in the history of youtube and this is coming from a MARVEL fan....this should me man of steel 4 or whatever the number it is but it should occur after the introducing the justice league so that the bonds are created and when superman dies you get to feel the pain from every person and superhero alike
anyone came here recently because of the new Death Of Superman movie? I like any adaptation, but personally nothing can be compared to the original comic.
I don't think you can recreate the atmosphere that existed when the comic came out like not knowing if he would return, the mystery or the anticipation.
I remember being very young and going through my basement. I found a couple of random comic books in a desk and one of them was "The Death of Superman." I've watched many animations and read modest novels, but never really got into comics ( Outside of Heavy Metal magazine...once again my father's accidental doing ). It was thanks to Death of Superman that I learned about comics, and appreciate them greater now as a result. On to the topic at hand: By bringing Superman back they've undone the power of his death. Alternative reality Supermen are fine, and would still fuel an entertaining and exciting continuation of the comics...but ultimately he should have remained dead in OUR universe (or at the very least in the DC verse that represents ours up to that point). They should definitely had killed Superman...they should definitely had NOT brought him back.
What are you talking about? The death of Superman is an essential comic book storyline. Plus, multiple film adaptations have already been made about the story arc. Try watching them sometime. Also, if you're not going to watch this, why did you even comment?
Does anyone have any idea why Superboy was censored from this? I was so hyped to finally see a mention to 90s Superboy when they start naming Superman's 4 sucessors, and they show me his FEET!!! They showed all the other guys, I wonder why... I searched about it but how do you find stuff like that, ya know? If anyone has any idea as to why they did this, please tell me! Can't get it out of my head!!!
There was a time in DC I think that Superboy was owned by the Siegel- Shuster family, and they can only show the character provided they get license form the family. Or something like that.
The movie itself sucked horribly, but this documentary was amazing. I hope DC re-releases it with the upcoming two-part "Death of Superman" animated film, or does an even more in-depth behind-the-scenes look.

Read Superman Doomsday omnibus, most boring writing ever. The arcs just drag, and I think deosn't respect you as a reader. Give me Alan Moore, Frank Miller anyday for that humanist element
The Death and Return of Superman story arc was so well written and drawn. No wonder it's a legendary story.

A great story arc. I loved the bilbo arc as well. True emotional moment for the character. The funeral was absolutely beautiful.
I was a kid when this happened the stories about people mourning Superman were true. It was like if the president or a major celebrity was killed.
Superman's titantic battle with Doomsday and his death / return is just legendary & remains to this day my favorite comic book story arc of all time.
