    it's so beautiful to watch a video and listen someone being honest about tubes 💕🙏 without the ""warm"" cliche and all that bullshit...FETs and tubes are just components, without a properly circuit around them they are just a chunk of material.

  • @bobbybowlin955
    @bobbybowlin955 2 роки тому +15

    The FET is just so much faster with the transients and it feels like there is more top end detail in it. The Tube still has a lot of high end, but because it doesn't respond as fast it seems like its more smooth.

    • @peterchoe
      @peterchoe Рік тому

      Tubes are not slower, they just compress the signal, giving the impression of "slowness." Tube mics excepting the u67 have little or no negative feedback. Fet mics are designed with lots of negative feedback so they operate clean until they hit a threshold. It depends how hard you are hitting the input.

    Love the comparisons, but I would love to have heard these comparisons in a full mix too. Like whatever mic you would normally use on the instrument and then the FET vs Tube

    I’m just about to open my studio to the public and I found the topic very helpful because I never put much thought into the tonal aspect of different microphones and how much closer the right microphone can get you to the sound you have in your head

    That was really illuminating, man. I've been looking at tube mic upgrades for the studio for a while now (shoestring budget) and thinking a lot about where it would apply and how. That 3D sound you described seems to lend itself really well to vocals, metal rhythm guitars, drum room and acoustic instruments. I found the top end a little harsh in some of the more sibilant electric guitar lines, but blend the low end of a tube mic with the top end of something like an SM57 or even one of my Earthworks SDC's and I bet something magical would happen. Thanks as always for the awesome content man!

    I love this type of video. The conversational style is nice, but what I really liked was the "case study" approach to comparing equipment. You did something similar with the 57 vs $10,000 ($12,000) worth of mics video. Love it!

    I love the Vacuum tube mic over anything else, Iam a Ham radio operator and I use Vacuum tube Ham gear, My transmitter is a 70's era vacuum tube unit and my RF amp (Radio Frequency) uses vacuum tubes to generate a little over 2kw of power, the reports I get from other Ham operators around the World have nothing but good things to say about the transmitted audio.
    Nothing beats a vacuum tube!!!

    All depends on the tube you use. New stock tubes sound about 10% different from FET, whereas expensive NOS tubes from the 40s and 50s can sound 200% different.

    Great video! I'm a huge fan of Soyuz mics. I use a Bomblet for vocals, VO work, and acoustic guitar. It's one of my all time favorite condenser mics. I'd really love to see how you think it compares to the rest of the Soyuz lineup for vocals.

    Wow, I feel like in the acoustc the tubes slower transcient response makes some of the hits in the gutar sound kind of compressed but in a niced controlled way. Also I feel the low end was more consistent in the tube, in the FET I hear the jumps in the low end more exagerated.

  • @jeffbridges6110

    Pick attack seems a touch more harsh on the FETs , but in a full song/mix , probably wouldn't notice it ....Unless you bumped up that frequency range with EQ

    To my ears on my setup, it sounds like the big difference is the tube slows down transient info.

  • @TheJTish
    @TheJTish 2 роки тому +2

    Maybe someone else made this comment... but one of the big deals with a tube vs. the fet is the harmonic spectrum that it favors (odd vs. even)...Our ears like the odd ones more which the tube enhances naturally. I really believe that is where 80% of the magic comes from. IDK.. I'm a lifelong student--so I'm not set in stone here.. just an observation that I've made along the way. That dude is a killer picker! (and you have very good ears, IMO).

    This is something no one is asking. Would a Fet mic go well with a Fet compressor? I have a MC77 purple audio. It’s said by some to be even better than the original 1076. Lots of singing engineers go with opto compressors. And either a tube mic or no tube. I never thought about this until now. Would it be bad to mix Fet and Fet? The compressor already adds a bunch of color. I don’t really hear of Fet and Fet mix. When it comes to compressor and mics. I hear of opto and tube mic or Opto compression and something like the U87. Any thoughts on this? Thanks

    Why so over-compressed, and why oh why are the waveforms hitting at over 0 dB?
    For all I know the A/D is clipping transients that the mic attempts to pass along, but cannot.
    Confusing.

    • @RecordingStudioLoser
      @RecordingStudioLoser  Рік тому +1

      Overcompressed? There’s no compression whatsoever.
      The levels are hitting -18 you can see the meters… No converter will clip that low.
