It would be without anesthesia or a local anesthetic. So thankfully, the patient would be asleep. And doctors would prescribe medicine to help with pain during the healing process. Relief from chronic pain of the condition would be worth the temporary pain from surgery.

I guess it’s mainly used to stop the pain and for cosmetic purposes too.
There is no move in the toe as the bones are fused together. As well as for cosmetic reasons, this procedure is done to alleviate pain caused by constant rubbing when wearing footwear.

Not exactly, what you are seeing in the second scenario is a joint fusion. Where the joint is fused together to realign the toe and avoid painful movement. So the "loss" of a joint would be the two bones joining together, not the bone that is removed.

I actually had this surgery ! The worst part is actually after the operation you can feel your toe trying to get back into it’s original position. Even with anaethetic :)
I’m interested to know if it was successful? What was the pain like and the recovery time? Where is your scar and does it make your toe much shorter?
@@belindarawlings778 toe is still bent but to a far less extent than before so it was successful. ( if i didn’t do the procedure, my toe knuckle would have rubbed against the top off my shoes until it was sanded down to the bone/infected. Definitely sounds painful.)
No pain is felt for the first few days due to anaesthetic but extreme discomfort can be felt, had to walk every day for a month, after wich the pin is removed.
The scar is just behind the first joint of the toe and it doesn’t change the size of the toe at all. Or at least not noticeably.

У меня тоже длинный второй палец на ногах и это доставляет много неудобств. Он загибается, болит, ноготь вростает в кожу от постоянного давления на него в обуви. В открытой обуви ноги выглядят неэстетично, но именно открытая обувь наиболее комфортна... насчет операции пока не думала.

I wonder what are the cons of this like will it effect running climbing or grip strength of the toe
If the fusion surgery is performed, the patient will lose mobility at that joint, but will see improvements in pain and return to normal foot function. Losing that articulation might affect some activities, especially if performed bare foot. But when the condition is severe enough for this to be recommended that benefits outweigh the cons.

Had this surgery about 5 weeks ago (both feet at the same time due to the discomfort growing up). Got about 1 more week left till I get the pins removed 📍
Umm were you able to walk around? Did you require a walker? and is the finger shortened?? 😣😣
@@riajohnstone I was required to use the walker and I was able to walk a few weeks later even with the pins. And yes my toes were a little shorten too. This surgery occurred in April of this year and now I’m 100% better.
