    Last night I was checking out biking stuff like I like to do, when I saw a story about a plywood mountain bike and then my brain said. "I wonder if Zach's ever tried a bamboo fixed gear, gee if he could get his hands on a CNC machine, a plywood fixed gear would be cool." Really enjoying the videos from Mexico!

      *1 year ago*, a bit late, but it's a wabi classic and today it's worth 995 USD. a bit more if you were to get a custom color(+250 USD). a bit more if you were to get the same tires(+45 USD separate).

    Thank you for posting. This is one of your best videos yet. You are speaking English on camera, but I expect you know enough Spanish to make yourself understood to your new friends. I had many Mexican-American friends when I was in school in southern California. They really impressed me with their dedication to their families. This is not something that often gets discussed in the United States. Mexican families are strong. They support each other all through life. There will often be multiple generations in the same house. When I see WASP politicians speak about family values, my reaction is that they know nothing. In the United States, we see the sacrifices Mexican immigrants are willing to make. They work long hours at back-breaking jobs just to make a little money to send to their families. We should admire them rather than demonize them. I get the sense that the Suerte-o-Muerte crew adopted you into their family. Okay, I'll get off my soap box now. Thanks again for the video.

    • @gregvassilakos
      @gregvassilakos 3 роки тому +1

      @Bebo I beg to differ. If some of the houses in Mexican-American neighborhoods look rundown, poverty is likely a factor. Many Mexican-Americans are working in low-paying jobs in the service industry, agriculture, or construction. Having money makes a big difference in being able to maintain a home or rent a nice place.
      In the town where I lived during my grade school years, San Bernardino, California, there was a very strong Mexican-American community that celebrated their culture with a Ballet Folklorico organization and a big Cinco de Mayo celebration.
      I haven't been to Mexico City since I was a teenager, but the photos and videos I see really impress me. Zach's video shows a city that is vibrant and clean. I have been following the development of the metro system in Mexico City. It is now the second longest metro system in the Americas after New York City, and it has the highest ridership. Of course, Mexico has problems with drug gangs and poverty, but the country has made massive strides in the last few decades.

      @Bebo I have known a few non-Hispanic White men who have married Hispanic ladies. They all tell similar stories. When you marry a Hispanic girl, you marry her family.

    Great story. A fixed gear bike is the best form of transportation for a human being. But I respect all kind of cyclists, and I always wave when I see them on the road, which is rare in my area. Being outside and smelling and inhaling air is what it's all about. Bicycle - connecting people.

    You wear black jeans cycling? I don't understand.
    When you're in a foreign area it pays to look carefully at maps so you aren't in the situation you were in: Getting whizzed by semis. That's suicidal. Especially in Mexico. Especially in Mexico City. Almost always you can find parallel routes. No they won't be as straight but you'll be more or less safe. And can ride with way more peace of mind and will see more of the terrain instead of just focusing on survival on the highway. There are few things that make us feel more vulnerable then getting blasted by a large truck and feeling the vacuum effect as it passes by. Mexico doesn't see a lot of bikes so they aren't used to giving them space. To them you're a motorcycle, an irritatingly slow motorcycle that is holding up traffic or awkwardly hogging the shoulder. Not sure why cycling never really caught on in Mexico. Its way more popular in Colombia.
    I love the idea of travelling with a bike. You have it down to an art form. Its fantastic. Hit the ground running, as they say. The hassle is travelling within the country on buses and trains with your bike. Its far better to visit just one general location with your bike. Otherwise you have to haul your bike box around with you.
