    I just joined the Nikon club and bought a d200 and a 35mm f1.8. Total outlay around 200 dollar. Only 10mp but for me and my purposes it's enough. Fantastic colors btw..

      Snagged both a D200 and D800 these last few months and I love both equally! I've had more fun on this D200 than just about anything else in the last 15 years since I started!

    10-20, 18-140 and 70-300 is the best 3 lens combination for Dx shooters. You carry one at a time for particular job.
    Prime lens 35mm for general purpose and 50 for portrait and these are optional.

      @rubenmagdaleno7555 if you are a wildlife photographer then just carry this 150-600 lens along with Dx body. It's enough for the job. Not everyone needs this focal length on day to day basis. Most often 18-140 is all you need when on a tour, 10-20 for environmental photography for vast angle coverage and 70-300 for normal telephoto while in the zoo or for taking portraits. Being the most useful and versatile focal length is 18-140, rest are for special purpose. Never forget the normal focal length prime lens for natural looking photos, especially street photography.

    Hello all,
    I've just upgraded to a d7100 and am now stuck at choosing a mid-range zoom (to be the workhorse)... I found there are 3 types of 24-85s offered here: 1) AF 3.5-4.5G ED VR (which Ken recommends here), 2) AF-S 3.5-4.5G ED (no VR), and 3) 2.8-4 D (no distance window on it, wide zoom ring). How do they compare IQ-wise? If the first two are the same optically, I think I could foresake the VR and save money for a decent zoom.

    Hi Ken. I just picked up a 7200. Your recommendation for the 70-300 VR lens.. Does it matter that the “VR” is in red ? Which I’m guessing is the older model VS the Black VR logo in line with the model.. Love you channel! Thanks

    Hmm. You seem to recommend a 50mm for the 7000 series but a 35mm for the 3000 and 5000 series. Any reasons? How about the 50mm 1.8g on the cheaper bodies?

    hello Angry, i purchased a clean used 70-300 afs vr about 4.5 years ago for 200$ used it heavily on trips, tons of usage, 20 countries, museums, hiking etc , i beleive i got my moneys worth out of it, sad to say that it must have been banged hard on one of my trips and the elements must have misaligned so all pics are soft upon cropping , actually beyond soft. i compared pics today of a license plate with the same pics 4.5 years ago, amazing to see the difference , conclusion is that the lens is damaged and misaligned. will get another zoom this time will try a new DX 70-300. Happy Holidays

    Ken, curious if you still feel the same about the 70-300mm 4.5-5.6 VR in comparison to the DX 70-300mm AF-P 4.5-6.3 VR? This would be for use on a D7500. Edit: I had a Nikon D750 and don't expect to go back to FX. Not ruling it out, just unlikely. Focus is more on sports/action and don't want to lug giant lenses to do so but happy to buy the FX 70-300mm if you believe it still a better option. I have no experience with AF-P lenses, just AF-D and AF-S.

    I agree with Ken. I shoot a D7100 like he does (I believe it is one of his favorite bodies) and I have used the 70-300mm VR lens with mine. It's what I started shooting when I first got into professional portraiture, having borrowed it from my mentor and good friend until I was able to afford my own (which ended up being a Tamron 70-200 f.28). This lens is amazing for nature photography, especially on an APS-C body where you're getting the equivellent of a 450mm lens at the long end of the focal length. Some might say that it's not as fast as a 2.8, and although that is true I feel like it still lets in more than enough light to shoot comfortably outdoors (but especially indoors with lights). I love how sharp it is, it's got a nice bit of heft but it's not too heavy, and it is a workhorse of a lens that I think anyone should buy. While we're talking about bang for buck, the Tokina 100mm Macro 2.8 is also an incredible buy, and if the zoom isn't as important to you I'd recommend that one since it's just as cheap and performs just as well if not better.

My last lens consideration has me going crazy..I was ready to pull the trigger on the Nikkor 12-24 in near mint for $500, then you reviewed the Tamron 10-24..which one? you are so knowledgeable and whatever you say...goes !

    I have a Nikon D7000 that was damaged on vacation last summer. My lenses are a Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II, a Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor
    70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED FX, and a Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR
    85mm F3.5G ED VR lens. I am planning to replace the D7000 next month with either a D7200 or a D500. I would like to start by using the 18-200mm lens as my primary lens and the 70-300mm lens as an extended zoom until I decide on which lenses to purchase in the future. I am more interested in photography than videos. The camera cost is not a concern.
    Would I be better off buying the D7200 or the D500?
    Thanks in advance!

    The 70-300 seems like a good choice. I have a Sigma 18-250mm 3.5-6.3, and although it's very useful, it lacks sharpness and quick focus. Is it still worth adding the 70-300? Sharpness good?

    Good advice mate. I am planning to get a D7200 body only plus at least 2 maybe 3 other lenses all depending on my budget. I want a range from a wide angle to 300mm so the 70-300 is definitely in. However with my limited budget, I was thinking of getting the 18-70mm. Nikon apparently don't make this lens anymore. It's not even an old skool type lens. If I remember correctly this lens was sort of like a slightly better built kit lens than the 18-55mm and in some markets was bundled with the D80/90 I think. What are your thoughts on that? Can't get it new so would have to search for it used. Struggling to find one here in Malaysia. Would you know how much that would cost stateside? If I can't find it I'll probably get the sigma 17-70mm. Is that a better option do you think?

    Are the screw lenses identified as S as you discuss here? Other nice tid bits like "screw focus lenses wont auto focus on D3000 or D5000 cameras" that you can post here? Maybe you made videos of other helpful tips. Have older F2 film camera with some manual focus primary and zoom lenses here. But when I wen to digital, I only bought pro- consumer non- removable lenses like Coolpix 5700 (paid close to $1000) and 8800. Looking to buy used DSLR body and now learning about DX vs FX, etc. Just don't want to make a bad choice in body. Like articulated LCD, video use etc. of Coolpix. Thanks

    Thank you for all the great videos! I have a quick question in regards to DX lenses. When using a DX lens on a DX camera do you still need to apply the 1.5x applied focal length calculation or is that calculation already applied to the claimed focal range of the lens? Btw, I just bought the 60mm f/2.8 Micro based off your recommendation and LOVE it! Both the 70-300 and the 10-24 are on my wanted listed, but the next for me will definitely be the 100mm Tokina (once again off your recommendation) for those lovely macro goodness shots. The bugs do not seem to enjoy me trying to stick my 60mm up their ass to get a 1:1 shot. LOL. Thanks again.

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 років тому +4

      virusct its just angle of interception, focal is focal regardless, but yes, a 50mm is rougly a 80mm on a DX camera.
      yes, STILL NEED TO APPLY
      so a 100mm is "like a" 150mm (for a FF /FX camera)
      60mm 2.8 D !!! that lens is the SWISS ARMY KNIFE of lenses, its SO DAMN MUCH FUN and SO USEFUL!!!
      well, since you have the macro already (the shorter one), you MIGHT prioritize the 12-24 F4 (rather than the 10-24) as next
      but thats up to you of course.
      yes yes, every mm counts in macro !!!!
      but for a travel lens and "DOES IT ALL" lens, the 60mm is unbeatable ,..........Ive got 2 of em, and i FING LOVE that damn lens.

    Fantatic and timely video for myself. I have a D300, great functionality which is important for me. I have a 50 fi.8d and a 35 f1.8 as you recommended. I am about to purchase the 12-24 Nikon or maybe Tokina 12-28 both f4. I like the idea of an Fx travel lens and I was considering the 24-120 rather than 24-85 Nikon f4's. I don't need an extended telephoto range. But I have the older 28-135 kit lens which is pretty good but no VR. Would I appreciatE an improvement with either of the FX zooms? Your comments woukd be really appreciated. Cheers Tom UK.

    I have run into a common issue with the 50mm af. When using the 50mm for landscape photography with an aperture above 5.6+/- and pointed in the general direction of the sun you often get an octagon shaped flare reddish-purple in the pictures. So keep that in mind. Wider apertures the flare is minimal or disappears. I have not noticed the flare with the 50mm pancake lens.

    Hi, I have a Nikon D7200 and own the Nikon 12-24mm, Nikon 50mm pancake, Tokina 100mm, and the Nikon 70-300mm. I'm considering purchasing the Nikon 35mm F2D ($240 Canadian) but wondering if I should purchase the Nikon 24-85mm lens instead?? I'm leaning toward the 35mm prime and thinking that with a 35mm and 50mm prime I should for the most part be able to cover the gap between 24mm and 70mm. Your thoughts? Always appreciate your expertise, honesty and wonderful humour.

      Marcia White 35 f2d is a great lens. The choice is yours, 24-85 is the midrange zoom you are missing, it’s practical, sharp and contrasty, the 35 is lightwait, small and fast, with less sharpness and contrast around f2 but with great bokeh and spectacularly delicate color reproduction

    Sold my Nikon 35 70 2.8 and adding the Tokina 11 16 2.8 DX and Nikon 35mm 1.8G lenses for my D7100. is it ok? I have the 24 70 2.8 as my midrange zoom.

    What do you think of the sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 Contemporary lens as a standard zoom lens instead of the 24-85mm nikon one? It works fine as a portrait lens and it is more wide angle and it could also be used as a micro lens. and the 1.3 crop mode can close the gap between the 70mm and the 85m focal length of the nikon lens.

      +Ibrahim Mohamed sigma junk :(
      you need a great prime for portraiture for best results. Obviously anything can "do the job", but that isnt the question.

    • @IbrahimAbdAllatif
      @IbrahimAbdAllatif 9 років тому

      +Theoria Apophasis I know it isn't made for portrait of course and quality will never come close to primes but I am on a budget and what ever lens I select probably would stick with me for a long time. so I think the sigma lens features would be better choice as it will kind of make up for a wide angle lens, a portrait and close up lens as well for a time till I can afford them later. what do you think what do you suggest for me ?

    Hi sir.. Love your videos and enjoy watching them. I have the Nikon D5100 and dropped it while on vacation this summer.. I haven't taken it for repair but gave me an excuse to upgrade, lol! I hear the shutter click and hear the sound recording while shooting on the video mode but the photo screen remain black. We decided to upgrade on a d7100. We only bought the body for the d7100. We currently have a 18-55mm lens that came with the D5100 but when our camera fell, the lens snapped out and the plastic that secures the lens to the camera broke off. We also have a Nikkor-50mm 1:18G I use for portraits... I am looking to purchase a lens for general use.. Of all the lenses you mentioned on this video, which one you recommend the most? Thank you so much.. Can't wait to hear your respond..

    Do you still prefer the NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G VR lens over the NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR? Isn’t the 24-120mm sharper and faster, in addition to the added zoom range?
    I searched on your channel for your opinion of the 24-120mm f/4 but I wasn’t lucky to find any related video. So, I appreciate your advice on this one. Thanks in advance.

    Hello!! I am a D7000 user, I am looking for an all round lens which would have a decent zoom range, a larger max aperture than the kit lens and would be sharp. I am looking at the new Sigma 17-70 (f2.8-4) Contemporary lens. Should I consider the Nikon 24-85 over this?? In my country the nikon costs around 150 dollars more than the new Sigma.

    What's odd when is that the camera information on my pictures showing up says that the Nikkor 12-24 F/4 lens is a Tokina when it's clearly labeled as a Nikkor. If it's true than Nikon is putting their label on it and doubling the price.

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 років тому

      +David Griffis lets see what that lens looks like in a PIC

    • @DavidGriffis
      @DavidGriffis 9 років тому

      +Theoria Apophasis I narrowed down the problem to a miss-attribution on Flikr's side. It's pulling the 12-24 F/4 info from the picture and pointing it to a lens that has the same specs rather than the Nikkor. I'll send a note to Flikr about their bug. The Tokina lens doesn't look like min but has the same specs. I uploaded the pictures of my 12-24 F/4 Nikkor to my link below. Pretty sure it's not a Tokina but even if there's a 1% doubt I want to check it out.
      I wanted to thank you for your recommendations. I trust them more than other people that review and promote websites in the first paragraph of their review (we know who that is). My pictures, though not professional, are proof that what you say is spot on. My newly compiled set of lenses is a direct result of this great video. I'm not sure how you get the prices that you quote as mine are around 50-100 bucks higher from the same sources. You probably negotiate with the sellers. I did get a dud refurbished 24-85 that had a sticky focus ring. I had them send me another one, and it wasn't sticky so I was right in my assessment (which incidently one of your other videos helped me understand). The 70-300 is solid and focuses quickly. The 24-85 is sharp and takes great shots. The 12-24 is amazing. The shots I took had no UV protector filter. I have since added that but before I did I have to say that each lens appears to have it's own subtle tone if I'm not mistaken. I could be wrong but I feel like I understand the lens and pick the appropriate one to get the right light and tone. In addition to the 3 lenses you recommended I got the 35 and 50 1.8 primes which take nice shots but I prefer using the zoom lenses. I was always a prime lens person but these lenses have changed my perspective. I also got the SB-500 which is nice an compact. The other flashes were taking up too much space and this one has good performance. I had a D3200 and just replaced it with a D5300. I had ordered a D5500 and a D7100 but they had issues. The D5300 is really nice even though the Wifi and the GPS isn't really useful to me. I'm hoping there's some truth to the anti-aliasing feature that has been removed. I'll find out soon and report. Another part of assembling a new camera kit as a result of people stealing my stuff was buying a nice backpack. I settled for a am...basics case for 25 bucks that holds all my gear as you can see in the pictures. I also found a bag that has two compartments on top of each other. I store a camera and lens and a lens for portable situations. I also have a large traditional shoulder bag from a..basics. All 3 bags cost less then one of the more fancy bags. Getting a camera bag is a big part of getting a camera kit together. It might be interesting to learning how you pack your gear on a shoot unless I missed a video. I guess the only regret I have buying my gear is that I missed a flash sale where they were selling the 7200 for 799 which in reality is an incredible deal and probably a worthy upgrade from the D5300 (I think the only nice thing about the D5500 is that it's lighter than the D5300. I'm not a fan of the touch screen, maybe because I didn't use it much but I heard it's slow).
      So thanks again. My rampage to get Nikon gear realistically set me back 2500 (I always had Cannon before). This time I have cam's set in my home so at least I'll get a picture of someone ripping me off. Next step is a Doberman.)
      You are the best reviewer out there by a long shot. You should have a form that people can fill out and collect leads. My company pays 50 bucks a lead even though we aren't in the camera business so you would profit immensely by it. If you referred me as a contact to another company after filling out your form I would be ok with that as I'm used to people bugging me about buying things. Just thought I would throw that out there since I noticed the volume you're getting. You may not need my information but thought I might try to reciprocate for the help you've given me.
      Like I mentioned the lighthouse is in Jupiter. But it sounds like your stomping grounds were Daytona. I've been there several times for Tennis tournaments and for bike week. Bike week is an awesome opportunity to get great pictures and now that you've reminded me about Daytona I might shoot up there during that time.
