24-85mm VR G - (~$200-$250 used) - Midrange zoom 70-300mm VR 18-35mm 3.5-4.5 G ED - Wide zoom 60mm 2.8 D Micro - (~$200) Swiss army knife. Great portrait crops on DX 135mm 2.8 / 3.5 AI
You finally made it thorough to this knuckle head! I appreciate the videos. Did not want to bring 2.8 glass on vacation with the 850. I already had the 60 and the 18-35. Added the 24-85 and the 70-300. FWIW, el Circulo de Cinco weighs in at 2465g (5.43lbs) versus 2439.06 g (5.37lbs), the 24-70 2,8 G ED (1.98lbs) and the 70-200VRII (3.39). Travel Zooms alone 1595g (3.5 Lbs)
iv had my nikon d7100 from new its only taken 800 photos so low shutter coint i like to shoot wildlife photos would going to the nikon d500 be a better move or should i stick with the d7100 love to hear your views you have great knowledge
Know this one has been out for a while, but just got the lens you have as a must have the Nikon 18-35mm af-s and am very pleased. Thanks and happy shooting.
Yep, got 3 of them (24-85 G, 18-35 G and 70-300vr) and they're all great! Still drooling over the 60mm but I've blown my budget for the next 1000 years so I'll keep on dreaming! BTW - I got these lenses on Ken's recommendation and am totally happy. Thanks Ken :)
Let me clarify... I was buying lenses anyway and Ken helped me choose the best in the focal lengths I was after and helped save me a few bucks in the process. I also got the 200-500 to replace an old Sigma (50-500) and sure enough the quality difference is amazing, so DON'T buy Sigma anyone! I got the 70-300 VR to plug the hole between 85 and 200mm and also to be a good carry-around zoom. I am not disappointed. I have only one lens left on my list, the Voigtlander 20mm 3.5 which is now as rare as rocking-horse shit but a friend will be travelling to the states and agreed to bring me one back - woohoo :)
Only trying to save me a buck!!!??? you say??? - HAH! I've spent more money on lenses since I started watching you than if I hadn't watched. Only trying to save me a buck - right! OK - this begs the question I've kicked around for a few days now - If you had to distill the number of lenses you owned down to a bare minimum - what would that number of lenses be and which lenses would they be? Maybe a budget list and maybe a price be damned list. Assume you would be using the lenses in these lists for professional work (photojournalism and portraiture) and for personal use (eg shooting birds in flight and occasional landscape) My reason for asking is that I need to down-size!!!! and would value your opinion. Help. Please!! :-) Lenses I have -too many to list but many you have recommended
I respect your opinion so on that note....I just bought a Canon 7D on ebay. I know your probably a Nikon guy but need some experienced input. Now I need some glass for my 7D. I know you start with glass first but my situation did not allow me to do so (bad knees). I love vintage cameras but can't afford to keep up with my camera club for monthly competition entries which I do need to enter to learn. Just trying to say I am on limited budget and looking for my next purchase for glass. What do you recommend for someone like me with limited experience and not sure what category he likes. I did choose the 7D finally because of the 8fps but mostly for the weatherproofed body and just about indestructible body. I need/want to learn everything for my club category entries and have a severe competitive streak in me so I'm pretty much screwed for a few years.
on a roll. kinda glad i passed out once i got off work and cant get to sleep now ha! Youve answered quite a few questions ive been thinking about, cant wait till you share your thoughts on filters!
Thanks for video! Why 70-300 and 24_85 and 18-35 is same I am sure you don't take together for shooting...I thing 105mm D is more the better from 60mm....
I have just read your top four DX lenses. I am in the market for a wide angle. So what about the Nikon 10-20mm DX lens soon to be released? Will this bump you up to the top FIVE DX lenses? Thoughts? Thanks.
2.0 A( is great valid choice, just a lot rarer a find OR DO YOU MEAN THE CURRENT $1300 135MM DC NIKKOR F2.0 ????????????????? i have a video review of that lens!!! Im staying in a hotel and have limited reply time and abilities working THRU my iphone for replies. Im on a photo shoot in south Florida and then a much needed vacation. Thank you sir!
Will you recommend the 18-300mm nikkor for travellling? The pictures are just for me, but i dont know if i should go for another lens instead. Thanks, love your videos.
Based on your recommendation I bought both the nikon 24 70 2.8 and 35 80 2.8d. Should I sell one to fund a wide zoom. I have d700 and d7100. If I have to sell one lens , which one should it be. I happen to have the 20mm 2.8 AIS too for super wide.
+Theoria Apophasis -- what are your favourite 18, 28 and 35mm manual lenses prime or zoom not slower than 2.8 for shooting video on a canon EOS 600d with EF-S mount?

Hi you are an ohnes and straight forward guy keep it up I only whish you where a Canon guy so I would get some very useful suggestions!!!! From Malta thanks for your work.
Hi, in one of your video i can't seem to find it, you mention that if you would select between 50 mm prime and the 60 mm micro lens, that you would select to use the 60mm micro . Is that right? because i have both of them and was thinking which one to carry along if i only carry one. Thanks
Damn I was 4 for 5 on what I was going to pick up lens wise compare to yours. I had the Takina 100mm Macro in there. By the way I'm reading a photography book right now called "Understanding Exposure" and the author talked about prime lenses vs zoom lenses and he had the same opinion that zoom lenses cause iron face although he called it depth of field scaling issue compared to prime lenses.
Was just wondering why you wouldn't use the 100 MM Tokina instead of the 60 MM Nikkor for your macro shots. You state that the 60 was not very good for that type of shot and the 100 would be much better here. You sold me on the 100 mm and I use it almost exclusively now for most things. Matt Vargo oooooooh, thats a tough choice!!!! thats a wonderful VR sharp midrange zoom, its gotta get more use fro you than a 20mm prime, despite how useful that is! youve asked me one question that its just impossible to be objective about, .... empirically selling the 37 70 would be my first choice. do you have a wide zoom yet? I finally got my 60mm d 2.8 today. Love it. Took me a long wait but worth it. I am same with crystal icon. Using phone here at coffee shop. It's going to be awhile before it comes off my D 7000. Next two lens 20mm 1.8 and the 24-85! Thanks for these videos and may the force be with you! Ha miss the intro.
+Theoria Apophasis I will check that video out. Got to ask what you consider best street photography lens for DX? The 24-85 seems good and price is right or is there anything better?
+Theoria Apophasis The 12-24 is excellent but costly indeed. For prime I like the 24mm 1.8. The 35mm is good but I sometimes get to close. With 24 I can crop but you can't crop what you missed with 35 and that's just facts. Not a fan of 28, seems like less choices than 24. 20mm great for landscape and party's but a little short on reach, plus I don't like cropping 20mm.
indeedly so. 20mm 1.8G is the best wide prime there is, it even blasts the Zeiss 21mm to pieces (all agree on this too). well the ONE (there are a few of course) advantage of a high MP camera, is you can crop from 20 to 24, and 24 to 28 etc and still retain incredible detail, and ultimately the high MP is like having always another set of lenses.
Just bought my first dslr with a Nikkor 35mm 1.8 lens Can you please refer me to a video or book to shoot pictures correctly with the lens I have. Keep up with the great videos.
+masum khan khan well, its CHEAP, VERY SHARP, and a great mid-range zoom. i never said id had Portrait low-element Prime Lens qualities, obviously not. a very cheap, sharp, and fast AF midrange zoom is what most peeps want FIRST but if someone says what they want diff. ill always say.
Thanks Ken - you're right about the weight and size, As usual your videos are fucking awesome. If I'm in a foul mood I just crank up an Angry Photo video and takes about 3 seconds to get rid of the funk. Robert.
Up here in the Yukon, us yuppers pay about $350 for a used 60 mm (that was 2 yrs back when our cod was on par with your pike). But all kidding aside, I'd like to know your thoughts on the lens-baby. Ever had one?
Dylan Patrick's The Cinematic Headshot From fstoppers. Your opinion worth the investment for this lesson. My main focus of photography is studio and product .
+masum khan khan same as the other lens....well, its CHEAP, VERY SHARP, and a great LONG range zoom. and its damn fast AF lens. wide, mid and long zooms are exceptions to the OBVIOUS low element count primes with divine depth, rendition, saturation etc. there is no contradiction here.
i have a really random request. can you stop using images of woman that are nude or pretty close to it as the thumbnails to your videos. some of us have kids and girlfriends that see them and its just not worth a trip to the dog house!
Josh B - I completely understand 'respect'.. BUT,, peoples 'feelings' are so fucked up now & EVERYTHING 'offends' them..!. If a nice NON porno nude pic upsets someone,, FFS,, harden the fuck up or ignore it,, or is that too bloody easy !.. Many people don't deserve 'respect' because they are pathetic, over sensitive fools wasting oxygen...!
Ooook! Nudes has been placed in art for centuries, Is a very beautiful subject if you see with an artistic eye. So please let's celebrate the beauty of the human body , please!
Hi witch lens do you recommend for wildlife photography?? I have a nikon d7100 with a AF-S Nikkor 55-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 GED lens. My instagram is @chile.wild if you would like to see witch kind of photography I'm into. regards!

24-85mm VR G - (~$200-$250 used) - Midrange zoom
70-300mm VR
18-35mm 3.5-4.5 G ED - Wide zoom

What about the kit lens as most of the people might be having nikon 24-120mm f 4g ed vr. Please share your thoughts.
on a roll. kinda glad i passed out once i got off work and cant get to sleep now ha! Youve answered quite a few questions ive been thinking about, cant wait till you share your thoughts on filters!
ive got 4 more videos uploading tonight man
Thanks for video! Why 70-300 and 24_85 and 18-35 is same I am sure you don't take together for shooting...I thing 105mm D is more the better from 60mm....
that 135 2.8 cost a fortune now, all thanks to you man. the 3.5 on the other hand, i got those one at round 60. 😂😂
Gia sou File, Keep up the good work. (Pireaus Greece)
I have just read your top four DX lenses. I am in the market for a wide angle. So what about the Nikon 10-20mm DX lens soon to be released? Will this bump you up to the top FIVE DX lenses? Thoughts? Thanks.
Great video.I bought the Tokina 100mm and Nikon 60mm from your advice.Excited to try the 60mm
A Q for you. I know it's more $$$$$ should I go for the Tamron 24-70 or the Nikon 24-85 for my D7200?
would you go for 135mm 2.8 or 135mm 2.0, of course 2.0 is little bit expensive but saw photo, incredibly sharp.
2.0 A( is great valid choice, just a lot rarer a find
OR DO YOU MEAN THE CURRENT $1300 135MM DC NIKKOR F2.0 ?????????????????
i have a video review of that lens!!! See same
current 2.0 DC lens???
or 2.0 older AI lens????????? The AI 2.0 is somewhat "rare", but if you find one cheap and good, get it
Kind regards sir.
+etnies777 18 200
def. NOT the 18 300
Theoria Apophasis Anything wrong with the 300mm one?
what filter are you using on your 18-35mm? it seems really slim, I've been adding hoya hmc's to my new nikkors. The 18-35mm is next on my list. thx
i use little other than a circ. polarizer (hoya) or one of several red filters for B&W
Theoria Apophasis got it, so that was a polarizer on the 18-35. thx
Is that 135 a Q version?
thanks for the clarification boss!
I have bought each lens that you recommend, and I LOVE THEM!!!!!!!! Thank you so much for your videos!
My Comp Hey, im just glad that youre happy with the lenses!!!
warm hugs and thanks !
keep shooting man!
+Ravi Shankar the 24 70 2.8 is for sure the keeper.
+Theoria Apophasis -- what are your favourite 18, 28 and 35mm manual lenses prime or zoom not slower than 2.8 for shooting video on a canon EOS 600d with EF-S mount?
Im not sure if you made a video about it, but what would be your kit for commercial work?
what do you think of the Tamron Af 70-300 f/4-5.6 di LD Macro1:2? I have a Nikon d3200 and I need a cheap Lens with a good zoom but also good quality of pictures. I found this one for 90€ second hand
Cool. nice
Thanks
I have D5200. Does 18-140 or 18-105 work full function? Help me thanks.
Damn I was 4 for 5 on what I was going to pick up lens wise compare to yours. I had the Takina 100mm Macro in there. By the way I'm reading a photography book right now called "Understanding Exposure" and the author talked about prime lenses vs zoom lenses and he had the same opinion that zoom lenses cause iron face although he called it depth of field scaling issue compared to prime lenses.
would you recommend the all of these for dx cameras?
correct
Was just wondering why you wouldn't use the 100 MM Tokina instead of the 60 MM Nikkor for your macro shots. You state that the 60 was not very good for that type of shot and the 100 would be much better here. You sold me on the 100 mm and I use it almost exclusively now for most things. Again a thank you for leading me to this purchase.
Robert
Robert Wilkins i do use the 100mm and 150mm macro Sigma. well, thats not the case, rather that in macro EVERY MM counts, and that extra 40mm is excellent.
the 100 is without doubt better, but this video is about PACKING around, say a trip.....in which case, the 60mm , namely on a DX is a "swiss army knife lens" and does SO MUCH, normal, portrait, macro, reproduction etc etc.
and is smaller.
Of course the 100mm is the BEST for macro, and ive got 55,000 on one of my copies,......
this video was for "packing lite, ...traveling etc etc, where youd only wanna take a few small lenses"
Based on your recommendation, I own BOTH the 24-85 VR and the 35-70 2.8. I'm finding that the repeated range between the two lenses is unnecessary for me. I can't decide whether I should sell the 24-85 and get a 20mm prime, or if I should sell the 35-70 to fund a different lens purchase. Help! What should I do?
Matt Vargo oooooooh, thats a tough choice!!!! thats a wonderful VR sharp midrange zoom, its gotta get more use fro you than a 20mm prime, despite how useful that is!
youve asked me one question that its just impossible to be objective about, .... empirically selling the 37 70 would be my first choice.
do you have a wide zoom yet? In your place id sell the 35 70 and fund a great wide zoom :)
Theoria Apophasis I do not yet own a wide zoom, the 24mm of the 24-85 is my widest focal length. I've been browsing for the 18-35 you speak of, but it is indeed hard to find! Especially at a sub-$200 price point.
The nice thing about the 35-70 is the constant 2.8 and the aperture ring for use with film cameras...
Matt Vargo Sorry, meant sub-$400 price.
Theoria Apophasis Thing is, if I'm gonna sell one to fund a wide zoom, why wouldn't I sell the 24-85 and use the 18-35 in its place for wide applications? THE CHOICES!!
18 35 is perfect and VERY lightweight, love it, .... but it cannot substitude a midrange zoom.
likewise you lose VR lens for lowlight and street shooting.
The choices indeed! The answer is to buy them all hehehehhe Kidding (kinda) ;)
youll love the 18 35 , so lightweight, ...remember only the G version of same.
Do you shoot medium format by any chance ?
i used to ALL THE TIME, in film, mamiya and 6x7 Pentax
medium digital is just a pain in the CROTCH.
Help which kit is better...AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm VR II and AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm VR Len's. or AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Telephoto..on a d 7200
alex ochoa buy body only and spend the kit budget on other lenses?
I finally got my 60mm d 2.8 today. Love it. Took me a long wait but worth it. I am same with crystal icon. Using phone here at coffee shop. It's going to be awhile before it comes off my D 7000. Next
two lens 20mm 1.8 and the 24-85! Thanks for these videos and may the force be with you! Ha miss the intro.
+James R haaa!!! glad to make U happy, im doing a lens "14 best PERIOD lenses for nikon " video tonight
+Theoria Apophasis I will check that video out. Got to ask what you consider best street photography lens for DX? The 24-85 seems good and price is right or is there anything better?
best street zoom or prime? HONESTLY, the 12-24 F4 (not cheap)
but indeed yes true true the 24 85 VR G (only the VR G version)
+Theoria Apophasis The 12-24 is excellent but costly indeed. For prime I like the 24mm 1.8. The 35mm is good but I sometimes get to close. With 24 I can crop but you can't crop what you missed with 35 and that's just facts. Not a fan of 28, seems like less choices than 24. 20mm great for landscape and party's but a little short on reach, plus I don't like cropping 20mm.
indeedly so. 20mm 1.8G is the best wide prime there is, it even blasts the Zeiss 21mm to pieces (all agree on this too).
well the ONE (there are a few of course) advantage of a high MP camera, is you can crop from 20 to 24, and 24 to 28 etc

Just bought my first dslr with a Nikkor 35mm 1.8 lens Can you please refer me to a video or book to shoot pictures correctly with the lens I have. Keep up with the great videos.
Edward Belleza sure thing, ive got a 120 books you can download, email me at neoplatonist@icloud.com for the link
Theoria Apophasis think you could seed me those too ?
sure thing, ill email you back
the 24-85 has SIXTEEN elements in ELEVEN groups!
I thought you opted for low element count bro. now m getting confused
+masum khan khan well, its CHEAP, VERY SHARP, and a great mid-range zoom.
i never said id had Portrait low-element Prime Lens qualities, obviously not.
a very cheap, sharp, and fast AF midrange zoom is what most peeps want FIRST
but if someone says what they want diff. ill always say.
24 85 VR is not portrait lens I use for Landscape, but I have and 24 85mm not VR
What about the 60mm ED ? any good?
Clem Yoakal poor construction, it sucks value wise
Thanks Ken - you're right about the weight and size, As usual your videos are fucking awesome. If I'm in a foul mood I just crank up an Angry Photo video and takes about 3 seconds to get rid of the funk.
Robert.
Robert Wilkins hehehe, well im uploading a video now EXACTLY in response to your question, since others asked same.
Up here in the Yukon, us yuppers pay about $350 for a used 60 mm (that was 2 yrs back when our cod was on par with your pike). But all kidding aside, I'd like to know your thoughts on the lens-baby. Ever had one?
lens baby? what the hell?
It's not exactly a tilt-shift, but it does some tilting and allows for selective focus. It looks cool but I'm not sure it's worth the expense.
oh lordy one of those , its hard to get that technology right without spending a fortune for a non-factory lens.
They certainly aint cheap
do you have top 5 for wedding photography?????
+marcin nieradka yah. ive made that video :)
Dylan Patrick's The Cinematic Headshot
From fstoppers.
Your opinion worth the investment for this lesson.
My main focus of photography is studio and product .

hey can u plz make a video on best and top super telephoto lens for nikon?
+ki ki i did that already , many times

Can u do a review for nikon 60mm
Nick Tashnim Ohhh ive already got 2 or more videos on that ONE lens!!!!!
oh n the 70_300? that beast has 17 elements in 12 groups. now m getting MORE confused with the low element theory. please explain ken... m at the edge
Why doe some of these lenses have 3 rows of focus grip nubs and some lenses have 4 rows?
barrel and optical design limits or DELIMITS the space for yardage of focus rubber ring.
why u use sexy girl cover....no need for that. your review is king.
If I'm allowed to express my opinion... I will take my 24-120 ed and 50 mm pan cake. Light as the wind. !
i have a really random request. can you stop using images of woman that are nude or pretty close to it as the thumbnails to your videos. some of us have kids and girlfriends that see them and its just not worth a trip to the dog house!
i accept your request and will comply !!!
i promise!
SSK9s If you actually had a girlfriend who you you respected you might think differently.
Ooook! Nudes has been placed in art for centuries,
Is a very beautiful subject if you see with an artistic eye.
So please let's celebrate the beauty of the human body , please!

Gavin Lacey too general a question, zoom or prime? whats your budget? more info needed
Theoria Apophasis it would be a zoom lens and my budget for this lens would be 2000 USD. I need a lens between 300mm and 500mm.
hell, you can get 2 great wildlife lenses AND a camera for THAT much
thats too much, LOL
500mm 2.8 used .... and for $300 a 300mm F4 ED IF
Theoria Apophasis great!! (Muchas Gracias) what about a new one?? does it worth it??
new one what? 500mm???
whoops, i meant to say 400mm 2.8
www.ebay.com/itm/Nikon-Nikkor-ED-400mm-f-2-8-Ai-s-Ais-/361299581867?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item541f221bab
Ive only used one about 5 times, awesome stuff!!
