Everytime i hear this track i keep thinking that is the best bit of trading i have ever heard! It's live.....The best band i have every heard Wow i love these guys.
I am the biggest Pat Metheny fan, and I found Guthrie is absolutely super guitar player........the way he play his guitar is so awesome, its not the genre, it can be jazz, rock, blues, the real guitar player can make his guitar sing, and Guthrie surely can, his guitar is like a second tongue for him........
@incubator2k3 It frustrates me a bit when people overlook how good Zak Barrett is at saxophone! Obviously Govan is ridiculous at guitar but Zak is also absolutely outstanding...
I think it's that people are more used to hearing sax players play superfast runs whereas most guitar players can only keep up by using a lower note count - with Guthrie he can quote whatever the sax player just played verbatim, with same speed and clarity. That is rare, if not unheard of. Having said that, I do agree - I've seen them live on a few occasions and Zak is outstanding (as are the rest of the band - esp. drummer Pete Riley). It's just that guitar players get more attention anyway and Guthrie is so far ahead of most (all?) other players.
Agreed but... Personally I think the first gg return to call (first break) is pretty much "I'll show you later" understated perfection: these one additional skip note that just makes the whole thing too... gg at his relaxed best
It's 3:24 Guthrie just can't help himself but put that transitional note in... it's only when you listen to it the 10th time that you realise how important it is... it presages the later call and return Also He just can't help going just that little bit faster than the sax at the last return Pure musical brilliance and remember off the top of his head live... Marvellous :-)
Ok 50-100 listens later and omfg the calm return (1) by Guthrie is sublime: how many notes just slip by us ... they are all played and all bloody marvellous 3:12 listen and we are not worthy applies
Ps the whole set is on UA-cam under "Govan fellowship bassment" (with 2 s) it's an hour plus, would have been a great night The thing about Guthrie is... his... *TONE* Speed is nothing without control, his ability to change modes and yet resolve things is unmatched, and he literally writes each bend and tone change: see the one take (on a strat too) of "regret #9" solo for Steven Wilson on here and you see how hard he plays... one take, note and tone perfect. Any hardcore tone fans: there's a note in "Terrible Lizard" that proves he's a true guitar god and one of the nicest blokes in music too ;-)
@JoseStev I get your point! Zak is amazing, not doubt about that! I "highlighted" govan more because well, usually trading guitar and sax solos, the guitar response is always left a little bit behind over those amazing sax lines. I was just pointing out that Govan is by far one of the most intresting gutiar players to watch doing this since he has an amazing set of ears!
I reckon the keyboard player stole all those notes from Bruce Hornsby... ROFL Guturie (who I have met a few times and is a lovely bloke) is a v12, firing on 2 cylinder slow here but omfg that is one sweeet tune - nice to see it pretty faithful to the original too Lovely: now on my "I listened to these hundreds of times" list Peter, England
Yes I'm back again after many visits. THIS IS THE GREATEST BIT OF MUSICIANSHIP IVE EVER LISTENED TO. Honour to have met Guthrie!
That back and forth solo between guitar and sax was beyond amazing...

Wow! Guitarist and saxophonist are both phenomenal
Beautiful is the least word that could describe this song. It's beyond words ❤

@JoseStev No doubt, It's not everyday you listen to a guitar sax trading like this, govan's musicianship is frightening
