- Sign Language Lessons - Halloween (ASL Snippets #17)
(Are you a new signer? Start with ASL Snippets #1)
This ASL Snippet focuses on some popular Halloween concepts. In addition to doing signs, I'm also demonstrating what is called "classifiers." Classifiers are descriptive handshapes. We'll continue to go more in-depth on classifiers. If there are signs in any of my ASL Snippets videos that you don't understand, please start from the beginning (the first video). I "scaffold" through the ASL Snippets series. In other words, I will use signs in later videos that I taught in earlier videos so that I'm not constantly re-teaching the same signs/concepts. So if you can't figure something out, go back to the beginning. Good luck!
Footnote:
American Sign Language is a very rich, complex, and unique language. To accurately learn ASL takes commitment and motivation. UA-cam is FULL of videos by individuals who make "cutesy" little videos that show random signs and claim to be teaching "sign language." Most of them talk, talk talk, sign, talk, talk, talk, sign.... as a result, they are spreading wrong information about what ASL is and how it is used. Some examples - Melissa Schenk, Ryan Moriarty, Kate Maria, etc. Each of their videos have a lot of views, but for each one of them, the information they are spreading is wrong. And because each one of them gets paid for their videos, not only are they "teaching" a language that they know nothing about, they are also making money at the expense of the Deaf. Is it really that big of a deal? What do you think? A minority culture that is often discriminated against and their language treated like some "cutesy quasi-thing" that's not a "real language."
If you have watched and voted thumbs-up on their videos and subscribed to their channels, you're helping to encourage them to continue to take advantage of the Deaf and to wrongly profit off a language that they are teaching wrong. Please, UNsubscribe from them, vote thumbs-down, and leave a comment to encourage others to look for and support accurate sources. Then, take the time to find accurate videos. Ask the video makers where they learned and if they are qualified to teach.
Take a moment to vote thumbs-up and leave a positive comment on videos made by individuals who truly KNOW sign language. Subscribe to their channel and share their videos with others. Please help to actively spread the accurate use of ASL.
On behalf of the Deaf community and those of us who look to have our language, community and culture get the respect they deserve, I thank you.
Thank you
That was so fun!!!
Halloween is a fun holiday
Thanks Cheryl! That's exactly what my teaching style is - teaching concepts (to open up possibilities) rather than on assigning English words to signs (thus limiting meaning). Glad you enjoyed it!
Aw thanks Bee. That's very sweet of you! :) Glad you enjoyed the story. Share it with others!
Cheryl Annette Thank you for the compliments! :) I do prefer to take a wholistic approach to teaching ASL and this video is just an example of that.
Awww. You are way too kind. Thank you for the flattery.
This is very expressive and does a great job of describing everything to provide context for the words you are teaching. It's nice to see this done so well without verbal, written, or spelled out words. Great story!
Aw thanks! More videos to come! Keep watching. :)
Thank you so much for making these videos!! It's easy to see how thoughtful, funny, and smart you are; that's what makes watching and learning so much fun!
You are such an amazing story teller! Fascinating!

Thank you. Fun review for the season.
LOL. That would have been a good ending to the video! ;) Glad you enjoyed it.
Hey Rob, I thoroughly enjoyed your Halloween story. It was truly spooktacular! Thanks :8)
Awesome classifiers. So classifiers is like descriptive people and intangible things such as ghost, tree, vampire, mummy, walking towards a person, etc. Adjective describe a black, pointed hat or a long nose, sunset and sunrise. Am I right? Isthat what it is called?
Hi Gayle! Thanks for the compliments. In a nutshell, classifiers are descriptors - size, shape, texture, motion, etc. You can think of them as adjectives, but they're also pronouns and other things as well. I like to consider them the "heart and soul" of ASL - mixed with accurate expressions - is what makes ASL come alive.
Wow Thank you Rob!!! Your feedback really helps Now I understand classifiers, shapes, etc. I study your videos a lot. Do you mind to tell me if there are any accredidated online BA degree (online only) as an ASL major that I could obtain to practice videos online to graduate from? Then I want to get into ASL linquistics eventually as well. Your input would be greatly appreciated. I have like 2 years left to finish my BA then I want to go on to masters related to ASL in the future.
hey Rob I seen some of your videos and im trying to learns sign language I am a begginer, so I am quiet confused with most of the ones that don't have a text expalining what it means. But in your future videos can you make one where you can show a basic conversation just basic for example: "Hello how was your day?" and then the response with a text saying what it means. As an idea to a future video maybe?
Jose - I actually do have a "greetings and introductions" video. Feel free to check it out on my channel. :)
I have a deaf daughter with bilateral cochlear implant and we are trying and learning together in ASL. My problem is people that are really comfortable signing or it's their main language go so fast I can't keep up i need to find a deaf mentor or something because I really need to learn this so my daughter can grow up knowing it.
Hi Rod! I think that is fantastic that you're learning ASL with your daughter. Helping her to have all possible access to language and learning is just wonderful. Kudos to you. When you're first starting out, everything seems to be going at light speed. The more you learn, the more you'll start to grasp it. I would recommend starting with my ASL Snippets #1 video and watching them all sequentially. This will give you language and reception practice. Are there any local Deaf communities in your area?
There is but it is a good drive. My oldest daughteris hard of hearing and washable to get a VIdeo Phone free through sorsens
hahaha Thought the end was going to be you waking up in bed and it was all a dream. Cute story. Thanks for sharing!
I haven't found a reliable resource as well as your descripted videos most of the videos i find are just mostly objects or refering to other things rather than sentences.
Jose - That's very true. Most of the other videos you'll find out there teach only signs - not sign language - because most of them either do not know how to teach a language, or they don't know the grammatics of ASL, so are just teaching random signs. That's unfortunate because then viewers who watch their videos are not exposed to the language itself and don't learn how to put it all together correctly. Thanks for the compliment!
