Never seen this version before and I thought Blackmore was incredible. He never played the same solo twice on a song. He mentioned that Highway Star had the most similar solos.

Child in Time is very interesting if we want to chart Blackmore's sonic development. The first version on In Rock is played on his Gibson 335, the guitar he used all through the 60s. The solo begins with an utterly gorgeous rich sound on the neck pickup, and he gives the lines a lovely Eatsern inflection. Then he switches over to the bridge pick up for the hard and fast part of the solo, which builds and builds, as you say.
I think that solo on In Rock was groundbreaking, taking rock guitar to a new level, although Blackmore wasn't happy with the way he played the fast sections - his articulation isn't as clean as normal, and really the Gibson bridge pickup doesn't have the edge that he wants to hear, And this is why he soon changes over to the Strat. And yes, the version on Made in Japan, played on the Strat, is mind-boggling. Listening to all the different versions of the CIT solo on the expanded MIJ is very worthwhile.
The solo is structured slightly differently with organ replacing that rich beginning on the In Rock version. But when Blackmore kicks into the fast driving runs on his Strat it hits the spot. Better than the In Rock version, his fasy rallentando riffs and runs dig right into the rhythm groove and lock in - great technique because he is playing with total aggression without blowing it. Wild trem arm outbreaks and switching between pickups, all the while racking up the tension. Lord's organ shadows well, comping - listening - supplying the necessary buidling blocks towards that climax.
The MIJ CIT solo is a real achievement. His sound on MIJ is the best: that neck pick up so sweet and full of sustain, and the bridge pick up full of snarl but still has body. The whole album is a tour de force in rock guitar.
Live in Europe is great too, and he was on top of his game then before going on to Rainbow. But his sound becomes very hard and trebly, but with huge sustain. That's a powerful sound, but I prefer the MIJ sound.
I think he started to scallop in the early to mid 70s. At first he just flattened the fingerboard to make it more like his Gibson. Then he started to scallop - shallow at first, and by '75, very deep.Purely for string bending and finger vibrato. Also I think it makes the guitar sound brighter and more zingy as the string energy isn't absorbed by the wood of the fingerboard.
Having said all that, one of my favourite Blackmore solos is a really simple blues solo - the original When A Blind Man Cries. That first appeared as a B-Side to Never Before in 1972!

MIJ is definitely of of the greatest rock albums of all time. You have inspired me to give a listen, its been awhile. I have done the version/video of the doing the live in the studio version on the BBC, which I really dig, but 2 times the video has technical problems. Its about time to give another shot. Thanks for the great comment and for watching..

Thank you for doing Deep Purple. Not much of a guitar solo reaction though... :(

Not my favorite version either, the solo wasn't that great and I was of put remembering where they were as a band with Richie. I appreciate the comment.

That solo wasn’t sloppy at all..and if you watch this entire show Blackmore and Gillan’s had a, how you say a verbal disagreement backstage and Ritchie didn’t come on stage till after Jon lord’s solo in highway star.

Sorry Brian, but this performance of Child in Time is... just *so* SAD and awful that I had to give it a thumbs-down, 😞, even though I actually like your idea of reacting to different versions of it. Alas, the vocals here are SO very far below the original studio version. Yes, I know it's a *really* difficult song and I can understand why Ian Gillan eventually refused even to attempt it anymore as he got older. I couldn't bear to listen to this dreadful version for more than a few minutes. (I skipped forward a few times, hoping it would get better, but it didn't.)
If you're going to react to other versions, try one of the recently remastered (2022, 2023) studio versions, posted on youtube by Soldesign72, which are accompanied by various surreal AI-generated images.
Most youtube reactors seem to choose the BBC live version, but I reckon Ritchie Blackmore is just "phoning it in" (sigh). His guitar solo there is far below the impact of the original studio version.
BTW, Petr Elfimov does a surprisingly good modern performance of this, with orchestral backing. He also does a good "Gethsemane" from Jesus Christ Superstar which is another of Ian Gillan's iconic vocal performances. They're easily findable by a youtube search.

HI, I gave this comment a thumbs down, definitely not the best overall Deep Purple version of the song. Thanks for the recommendations and checked out Petr, although he is a good singer and I love Ian's performance on Jesus Christ Super star, Petr's version of Gethsemane unwatchable. The version of Child in Time was good, but I perfer do a version by the original band even if lackluster.
