Deep Purple is Lar's favorite band! He inducted them into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. The Deep Purple Family tree is huge! Dio, Sabbath, Whitesnake, just to name a few. Dream Theater, Opeth, and Metallica have some notable cover songs. Machine Head is definitely a must listen album in its entirety. Every lineup this band had has something great to offer.
Now What?!, 2013, (which is what you refer to) is a great album. To me (and, if I remember correctly, Jon Lord, the keyboard player who passed away in 2012) the best studio albums are "In Rock" 1970, "Fireball" 1971, "Machine Head" 1972 and "Purpendicular" 1996 are four of the five best studio albums. The last one is with Steve Morse on guitar. Steve left after 28 years in 2022 due to his wife's illness. Simon McBride is the guitar player you saw. The classic live album is "Made in Japan", recorded in 1972, the best live album by any group, any time. The playing is brilliant, the sound is brilliant and there isn't a single overdub. You should give it a try! As audio engineers I believe you will be impressed (Martin Birch recorded and mixed. He later did Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath.) "Live at the Olympia" from 1996, with Steve Morse, actually comes close to Made in Japan.
The only creepy halloween stuff they made is from that album you bought Now What?! And it's Vincent Price. Otherwise no, they never have been a group that made creepy songs, and especially not songs for Halloween.
That "creepy Halloween" aesthetic that you mentioned really only started on that "Now What?!" album that you have. I've never really made that connection, but you're probably right. I think it might have been the idea of their new (at the time) keyboardist, because I can't recall any specific moments of that being a thing in their music before 2013. They've always used a lot of organs, but their original organ player (Jon Lord) ran his organ through a Marshall amp to make it sound heavier and compete with the guitar, so it always sounded a bit different than a regular organ. Ritchie Blackmore (their original guitarist who also formed Rainbow) and Lord would always have moments where they would do a solo-off for a while in the middle of a song, especially live. As for the production, they've pretty much sounded really good since Machine Head (except for the 80s). Machine Head sounds really good even today, in my opinion. I'd like to know what you think of it. Also, because Chris mentioned the drumming looking fake, it's always been like that. If you go back all the way to the early 1970s, where they would go on different TV shows and be asked to mime performances, in the actual song the drummer would be doing constant solos during verses or be using the double bass the entire time, but in the performance he'd be doing a regular drum beat. He recently acknowledged it and said he couldn't mime to save his life. It makes sense considering they've probably only made like 3 music videos in their entire career.
and to think that the whole album turned to be even more better. Heavy guitars, heavy organ, 70' sound, its all there. Deep Purple on their MK IX era, are hitting in all cylinders along with, at last, perfect band mates that all contribute to classic DP sound while respecting their myth, something they didn't since like 30+ years now. Nobody managed that at this age, perhaps Judas Priest lately. Insanely enough, most of these songs could fit on their legendary albums. Can't stop listening to it, after like a week or so. So glad that these gods didn't call it a career as it was rumored. So glad they found each other again.
The 'question mark' album is 'Now What?!' from 2013. Aside from 'Smoke', the song you were thinking of is 'Highway Star'. Bob Ezrin is their producer. You should know who he is. Look him up. The Gary Numan song is... just 'Cars'. I think DP's latest single, 'Lazy Sod;' is even better. That cruisy, 70s feel. Very cool.
