    I'm a little late to this, but not too long ago, Masahiro Ito has come out on Twitter stating that he is earning NO royalties for Pyramid Head. When the statue came out, he was only compensated for the boxart he drew. This is most likely the same case for Robbie the Rabbit and other Silent Hill-related merchandise. Buyer Beware!

    I used to promote PH being in everything, around the time of the first movie coming out. I was under the belief that The Red Pyramid Thing and Xuchilbara were one and the same. I've since discarded that theory, and feel now that PH should only be encountered by James. But you have to admit, The Crimson Ceremony it is a pretty convenient way to explain his state of ubiquity. I guess I can ride the fence on the issue. Overall, he's got a super cool design, and is just plain fun to cosplay.
    EDIT: Hold up, the Great Knife is actually SHEARS?? That explains why the blade and handle is reversed from a normal knife!
    I always figured PH just abandoned it to take up the Great Spear, and that's when James nabbed it. But it being the other half of the weapon, just as PH is another aspect of James, makes so much more thematic sense! What a revelation.
    Twenty years later, and I'm still learning new details! Sorry about all the edits, I just got really excited. ^^;
    Excuse me while I show this video to everyone. Mind blown.

      Love the whole shears thing too. They put so many small details in that game about pyramid head being connected to James.. it's just why it feels so cheap when they put a knock off in homecoming because of fan demand lol.
      I used to hate pyramid head being in everything and it really making no sense, and still kinda do tbh, but I guess seeing as every protagonist you play as in silent hill is meant to be an every many and never really be recurring, fans need something to latch onto, and pyramid head was the perfect thing.

      @@Camelotsmoon I'd say the nurses are just as iconic as PH. They're the power couple of Silent Hill. And like PH, the nurses are also a teeny bit overused. Not that I dislike them-- I love cosplaying as them, even took top prize dressing up in two separate cosplay contests. The Alchemilla and SH2 Brookhaven varieties, respectively. And I always end up pulling more than a few muscles in the process. XD They're such a cool enemy, I don't really mind them being everywhere.

      @@MadamFoogie I wouldn't mind the nurses necessarily if they weren't always female and oversexualized. I'm not trying to be feminist or anything like that when I say that either, it just doesn't make sense out of Silent Hill 2. Everything in that game was oversexualized because of Jameses repressed sexuality, so it 100% makes sense there, but it was just something else konami wanted to bring back for fanservice over and over. Silent Hill 1 was the only game where nurses (and they even had male nurses/doctors) made any sense; they were even in legit scrubs, and not in tiny miniskirts.

    • @MadamFoogie
      @MadamFoogie 2 роки тому +1

      @@Camelotsmoon I'll suggest that the nurses in SH: 0 weren't oversexualized. They seemed to have little identity at all, just faceless figures with no real definition. This just could be because of the graphical limitations of the PSP, but they seemed fairly normal in my opinion. Maybe a little busty, but nowhere near as bad as the fanservice in Homecoming. This could be because Travis only saw the nurses as abusers of his mother, and was pre-adolescent when he first encountered them.
      It's implied that Travis has almost no sexual drive, and might even be asexual. Makes sense, his mother did try to kill him.
      Now I have to pose a question, since it just occurred to me. If SH1's nurses weren't sexualized, then why were they cranked up to 11 in SH3? I mean, the nurses were basically copies of the Fukuro lady, which is as sexy as Silent Hill gets. Why the heck would Heather/memory of Alessa be horny for the Brookhaven nurses? The obvious answer here is Konami's usual fanservicing, but it's fun to speculate anyway. All I can figure is that maybe Claudia, Vincent, or Leonard was influencing the Otherworld? Perhaps Stanley was secretly on the dev team when they were coming up with those nurses. Or maybe James' horniness was so just powerful that it permanently altered their appearance. The ghost of his boner lingers forever. 🤣

    This was great. I often find myself in the mud with those so accepting of PH in games outside of SH. In a strange way, PH belongs more in Dead by Daylight than he does in SH Homecoming. You see... canon and artistic integrity are values I hold in high regard. If we don't respect the wishes of the artist, and buy into gimicky cash-grabs, we simply play into the hands of money-grubbers like Konami, and miss the deeper meaning and symbolism inteded by the artist. But ultimately I agree with your concluding statements- that PH has become something of an archetypal monster that we SH fans are happy to see cosplayed and featured in crossovers. But I stand by what I said about him *not* belonging in other SH installments. SH has *another* mascot: Robbie the Rabbit. Let him be the Ewok of SH.

    Silent Hill 2 is really such an outlier amongst the games. There's very real evidence to argue that the original Team Silent intended for Silent Hill to revolve around the mysterious Cult and its machinations, similarly to how Resident Evil pitted players against the villainous Umbrella Corporation. Then along comes Silent Hill 2, which is only tangentially connected to that meta-story, and it becomes the greatest success, the one that post-Team Silent games tried and ultimately failed to recapture.

      @Shyanna M I would say that SH3 is still a personal journey in many ways. Including fear of unwanted pregnancy as well as Heather coming to terms with herself as Alessa.

    • @ion4393
      @ion4393 2 роки тому

      @Shyanna M My issue with SH3 is that before you get home the story barley progresses, you go from malls to sewers to half-finished buildings that have nothing to do with Heather or the main plot. That's almost half the game, and then it becomes a retelling of SH1 as we explore the SH2 version of the town.
      I think it focuses on Heather's struggles more than you give it credit for though. It's just more metaphorical with the cult's god in the final product.
      Silent Hill needed its lore to not become formulaic. Person comes into haunted town to face their inner demons got old pretty fast, didn't it? I think the first four do a good job mixing personal struggles with cult stuff. SH2 added a bunch of stuff to the lore; the town's history, the spiritual power (that was not a thing in SH1) it wasn't just about James.

    • @ion4393
      @ion4393 2 роки тому

      @Shyanna M Both approaches are formulaic to an extent. I agree that Heather's trauma would be a lot different than James just as both SH1 and SH4 revolve heavily around the cult but are very different stories.
      Both of these ingredients are needed to make a Silent Hill game. The question is what aspect the story should focus on.
      For me, Silent Hill is at its best when there is a balance between the two.

He'll always mean the same thing in the context of SH2, and it's not like he means _less_ when he shows up outside of the game. Something was always going to be the icon that represented the games, every franchise big or small has that. Pyramid Head just got lucky and took off in popculture. When does SH2 itself hint at the idea of the red devil following anyone other than James? I don't remember Laura or Eddy ever seeing them. Eddy in his cutscene in the apartment with James says he has no idea what James is talking about when James asks him if he saw the pyramid shaped monster. I know in the outside hallway pyramid head is glowing red when you first see him behind the bars next to the grandfather clock room, but there's also a glowing red sink in one of the apartment rooms and that's just to signify that he washed his tools off in the sink like the executioners did in the town back when it was a swamp; it's just to show that James created pyramid head from one of the executioners pictures he saw if I'm not mistaken.

    • @SunDormant
      @SunDormant 2 роки тому +2

      @@Camelotsmoon SH2 hints at the idea of other people seeing Pyramid Head twice through the memos of the "Murder Incident Article" one (found in the garbage chute of the apartments) and the "Key is in the Park" one (found on a porch marked after reading the memo at the director's office).
      The first memo implies Walter Sullivan could see the "red devil" trying to punish him for what he did, an event which was somewhat reworked or retconned (depending on how you want to see it), as in SH4, Walter's first victim, Jimmy Stone, was an executioner of the order who would wear a ceremonial attire resembling Pyramid Head, and was nicknamed "the Red Devil". The second memo implies that Brookhaven's director, who knows James by name and is aware of James' predicament, could also see "the thing".
      You could argue that these people or memos are not real and are all in James' head, but the same could be said about the executioner picture at the museum, since there's no concrete evidence that James ever saw it before the events of the game.

    Pyramid Head is the Michael Myers of the Silent Hill Franchise; We LOVE him like we LOVE The Undertaker; because they invoke this kind of terror that transcends the time after you stop playing the game or stop watching him. It's the thought that he can be around the corner and get you at anytime. It's the thought that you created this creature and your creature is out to kill you; kind of like in the Alien Franchise when Ripley becomes part alien herself and the alien connects with her because of that and that is one of the reasons that she is able to defeat the alien in the end. It's the fact that you create something, it becomes a monster, comes after you, and you have to destroy it before it can destroy you. In other words, Pyramid Head is a piece of James' whether it be his mind or soul. However, I read it in a additional and more terrifying way; Pyramid Head i.e. James Sunderland is Silent Hill's first HUMAN Serial Killer with Alyssa being Silent Hill's first spirit serial killer. I think that is why Walter Sullivan is so controversial because he is a HUMAN and SPIRIT serial killer and that juxtposition may be hard for some people to understand or swallow.

    James did NOT create Pyramid Head though. The TOWN created Pyramid Head to fulfill James’ need for punishment and it was the town who manifested Pyramid Head for that purpose. The town has him as a tool. There’s no media addressing that James is an everyman who has NO powers himself, the town and its mysteries have the power, so saying James created these monsters is incorrect. The town leeching off his psyche and manifesting his feelings and fear as monsters doesn’t mean HE made the creatures he’s seeing. Since the town created pyramid head as a punisher for James, it makes entire sense that he’d show up to punish Adam Shepherd in Homecoming and pass by/leave Alex alone since him killing Josh was an accident, not malicious like James’ murder of Mary.

    He is the Executioner.
    Pyramid Head thrives in an archetype that's rarely seen, rarely spoken of, but very potent to humanity's history and all cultures--The Executioner, the Beheader, Death by Law. He isn't justice, he is Finality. His hunt is slow, because its not about the chase, he'll catch you or you'll be taken to him regardless. its his job to deal with those who've been deemed to unforgivable to remain in the world.

  • @ShiningEternity
    @ShiningEternity 2 роки тому +1

    Free styling, I think the development of Pyramid Head may have been inspired by Mr X and Nemesis from Resident Evil. A reoccurring monster that relentlessly chases the player as opposed to just a one off encounter. Someone posted footage from an old demo which shows Pyramid Head chasing James in the streets at night suggesting more encounters at one point. Fortunately that didn't make it into the final game as being chased by a slow creature in a large open area makes such an encounter somewhat comical. This is why they opted to change course and only use him in small interiors like a closed off room or hallway where you are forced to either run in one direction or fight.
    In regards to his popularity, sadly... the majority of people including those who have played SH, watched the movies or even cosplay PH just see him as a "scary monster". They don't understand, let alone even question the complexity or intention of his existence. However, after seeing his use post SH2, why should they question it as he has devolved into just that.

    Why Pyramid Head is in everything? Because: Konami.
    Now, why is he a fav among the fans? Probably, is because his cool design. As mentioned in the video, there is people that like Mr Triangle without even know nothing about the existence of Silent Hill 2... or even "Silent Hill" as a video game franchise to begin with.
    By the way, I always have thought that Masahiro Ito could have been inspired by the design of Saido Fushihito from Clock Tower: Ghost Head, for the first PlayStation, by the time he created Pyramid Head. He could also been influenced by all the Clock Tower games, since the Great Knife is just like one half of a giant pair of scissors. Yes, like the most iconic weapon of the Clock Tower series. And... he later become involved in the design of the Scissor Walker of the game: NightCry, which is a spiritual successor of Clock Tower.

      @@ElvenRaptor I respectfully disagree, while the monsters of Silent Hill 2 have a psychological meaning for the protagonist, story wise, their actual designs are too simple and abstract, they look just like the shape of something or someone else. The enemies in the game felt more like obstacles rather than real threats both in behavior and appearance. The design of Pyramid Head has a little more charm and personality than the rest of the monsters that look bland in comparison, at least for me. But I think that this matter is subjective for everyone and has more to do with personal preferences.

    • @panchopistolas2593

      @@LosMSR That is a recurrent theme in Silent Hill since the first game, influenced by the "chiropractic scene" in Jacob's Ladder where he tells Jacob that all depends on how he see and accept that kind of creatures, they could be angels or demons. And in Silent Hill as a franchise, the creators have always played with that idea, in fact, at the beginning of Silent Hill 2 you could find a corpse with various paper notes scattered around the place and in one of the memos it says the follow:
      I saw those demons. They were
      there, I'm certain. But my friend
      says he didn't see anything.
      If that's true, does that mean
      that what I saw was an illusion?
      But whether that demon that
      ate human beings was real, or
      whether it was just some kind
      of hallucination that my mind
      dreamed up... one thing I know
      for sure is that I'm beyond all
      hope.
      In the latter text is possible to see that the creators continue to use the same resource that they used in the first game which consist in each character seeing something completely different from the other ones (like Cybil not believing in what Harry tells her, because, she sees a complete different reality in the town until the very end of the game [if Cybil is still alive, of course], when both she and Kaufmann, somehow manage to get to the center of the "Nowhere" to face Dahlia and it's there and then when every character can see the same thing for the first time in the game. But in terms of religious imagery that could be used in a dual meaning way, we have the Balkan Church where we first meet Dahlia. While the church itself looks like it doesn't have anything wrong, strange or out of place within it, Dahlia is the antagonist of the first game, the deceiver who was behind of all that happens in the game and she even gave Harry the Flauros, the item that has the power of a demon of the same name or more likely, the item that, indeed, has a demon in its interior to counter the powers of Alessa. So the Balkan Church, while it could be just a regular church, it became tainted by the actions of Dahlia. Now, going back to your comment, something similar happens with Maria at the end of Silent Hill 2 where she has a strange thing that enshrouds her head that, somehow, looks similar in a way, to the veil of the Virgin Mary, and, incidentally, she is attached to a weird structure while being upside down that it could be a reminiscence of an upside down crucifixion.

      Not exactly, on the movie Rose when to Sharon into the town, and Christopher his husband didn't support her. Therefore the PH is a masculine figure, a symbol of a male figure that Sharon is lacking, to the wimp attitude of Christopher. She needs an strong rol model, but her husband isn't the best example, therefore the town showed her a protector for Sharon.
      That means PH isn't exactly evil anymore, more like a twisted angel, a judge for James, a protector for Sharon. Not a bad upgrade. I guess that explained why there is a remake of SH2 first than 1, as a way to put PH there, and repets him on the 1, but now as a protector. If Japan people wanted more PH, we can't do anything, the game was created there.

    Your video made me change my mind, I guess. I was against Pyramif Head appearing in any media other than Silent Hill 2 because it only exists in James's mind, and it's not real, factually.
    But, you know who else only exists in its own media? Dracula. They even kill him at the end. But Dracula has appeared in many other media. Games, cartoons, books, comics, movies, even with Spiderman and Scooby Doo! So, yeah, some of these stories are mediocre comedy, but some others are good stories! The world would be a worse place without some non-Stocker Dracula appearances. We need to learn to leave Pyramid Head grow and become the monster he's destined to be: the best monster ever made.

    Hey this is an old video but i just cant find a real explanation to why is there 2 pyramid heads in the fight before the final fight in silent hill 2 . Lots of people say that its meant to represent james guilt for killing mary and eddie , 2 killings , 2 pyramid heads but i just find this theory to be so stupid . like we see in th toluca prision way before james kills eddie in the 3 hanging ropes outside a square that show 2 pyramid heads with a person in the middle being executed . i dont know i would love to see your take on this that i cant seem to get a right answer for ty!

      The original creator was asked this years ago; what was under the mask. He said "His head, duh". The implication being there is a face under the mask, we just don't get to see it.

      @Camelotsmoon 2 роки тому

      Twin Perfect sound like dumbasses tbh. While I also dislike PH being in other games (other games in the SH series I mean, not things like DBD) because it feels like it cheapens all the connections he had to James in SH2, TP has said a lot of dumb shit lol.

    "only james can see him". (even though there's monsters that repeat through out the whole series.) The monsters are a fusion of people's sub conscious and the town. There's a picture in one of the games where a religious looking leader is wearing a pyramid/klan looking hood. Surprised the narrator didn't show it. So I'm going to boldly say pyramid head's creator is wrong and has his lore messed up. :)

      Well, I think given how he talks about Angela's and Eddie's "Pyramid Head", I think he means that the way James sees him is only seen by James - he looks different to others, or might not even appear. But the "red pyramid head' is an appearance/identity that only exists for James. Others see something else.

    Cool insight into the matter, enjoying thr video
    Then randomly 16:22 "gamers are more likely to recognize Leon rather than Nemesis"
    ????? Uh, what? Why? Nemesis, the face of one the games, antagonist of one of the (quality aside) moderately popular movies, probably most well known cool looking RE monster designs & potentially most well known "stalker" kind of enemy - not that recognizable?
    Such a small comment but I'm baffled lol unless you mean cause they used the remake design; but he's still pretty recognizable, atleast equal to or maybe even more so than PH - who is this "gamer" that would recognize Leon but not Nemesis? I'd think someone would either recognize both, neither, or Nemesis only, before recognizing only Leon lol
    Good video regardless, just *ahhhhhhh* lmao

    Seems also a blasphemy sign, since his helmet could be a manifestation of a church roof, without the cross part. The bodies in the picture look like Mary, but also like the ghosts of SH4. The reference to Walter Sullivan.
    Great info, Muse. So the Japanese people wanted more PH, that means Konami is right, they are a company after all, back in time on Western, Marvel had the same issue with Phoenix, at X-Men, and they add more and more titles of the firing cosmic bird. The fans even want a battle between her and Galactus, or by Thanos, so if the game was at Japan, and people of there want more PH, we need to respect that.
    My personal take is that Valtiel and PH are twisted angels, just like Jacob's ladder, demons can be angels. Valtiel is Gabriel, PH is Michael, the warrior, the soldier, the judge of paradise. Simple as that, I don't think James created him.

    I don't really have a problem with Pyramid Head appearing in other games, my only problem is how they change his design. The one in Dead by Daylight looks so over designed that it loses what makes Pyramid Head so unsettling to look at.

    • @LosMSR

      Konami is a company, the movie created that design, so that's free advertising. The new movie in some way is rising the hype again, which is important since games aren''t cheap to make, on PS1 were, now, that's another story. The best scenario for this game is a merge between Konami and Sony. But until that, another media needs to rise funds for new titles.
      To me Homecoming is very interesting, because if the four is about isolation, and videogames fans, the V seems to me about a fan of SH, if you were a fan of SH, you will see PH in the other world, a clue of this is, that Alex and Josh spent hours watching movies and playing videogames. Something that Adam (a boomer) hated. Adam with his narrow mind wanted that Alex and Josh join the army, just like he did.
      The whole town is a fabrication built of tv and videogames references, even the living room of the house looks like The Simpsons show, with the brown couch, and the boat frame.

    I think what bothers me about a lot of these divided feelings about how Red Pyramid head should be exclusive to SH2, specifically to James because its his "ID". As per the creators, Silent Hill is cursed and anyone's sin and dark deeds gets consumed by the town and remains like a stain. Therefore Red Pyramid no longer has to be exclusive to James, but the town itself now. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Alyssa decided to officially deem Red Pyramid as her and the town's personal executioner. Silent Hill was truly designed to be an origin of hell of there was any. coming from balanced version which would be purgatorial, and then the full blown Hellraiser Hellish form which at this point, is punishment time. There is a lot that can still be done with this story, game and franchise and i don't feel anyone should try and make any story of any of the games exclusive to that one chapter, when SH itself is the root of it all.

    My personal take on The Red Pyramid thing/ Pyramid Head, is that he is a shape-shifting God, the Red God that is described in Silent Hill 3, Xuchilbara. A creature that leads people. In the famous photo in the Historical Soceity, it is referred to as Misty Day, Remains of Judgment. So, he is the physical representation of justice, and past sins. We only see the Second PH, AFTER Eddie is defeated, two sins. One being PH being Mary, the other PH being Eddie.
    Xuchilbara takes the form that is frightening, to lead people back to obedience, or change their ways.
    It isn't about punishment, it is about someone changing themselves before it is too late.
    [Which is why I hate the vengeful spirt trope, that gets tied to Silent Hill.]

    My first encounter with Silent Hill was the 2006 movie directed by Christophe Gans. I had no idea about the games back then, so of course I didn't mind PH's appearance. I found him to be very erotic, tbh, even though there were no real hints of it in the movie.
    When I saw (yes, saw, I can't play games myself) SH2 and its two very unambiguous cutscenes (first with the mannequins, second with the lying figure), I understood. Gans was a great fan of SH2, he knew the sexual undertone of the PH character and somehow managed to transfer it into his movie. You may not like PH's appearance in it, but the performance was fitting.
    I think said sexual undertone is what makes the character so appealing, even though we only saw it in SH2 (where it fits and belongs). I daresay, without those two cutscenes of PH in SH2, I don't think the character would ever have gained such popularity.
