    While i like the advice of practicing 5 minutes a day for the first two months, it does seem quite difficult to accomplish, i always end up doing like two hours without even noticing

    3 weeks in and the callouses are getting crazy!
    Thanks for the lessons! The advice of "practice a few minutes every day" really helps you to avoid that discouragement of sucking at something in the beginning...grateful for the work, Marty!

    Marty, please accept my thanks for the lessons you offer here. I picked up a guitar last week for the first time. I love your style of instruction, and your advice of 5 minutes per day for 2 months is keeping me motivated, excited about learning, and not feeling overwhelmed. Thank you for your generosity!

      I get frustrated also when he takes off on a cool song and then I try to replicate, but no where close 😂. I feel your frustration, but I am also learning very quickly, so with more practice, we will see progress.

    Very good stuff Marty! Just bought my first guitar about a month and a half ago. A Washburn C-10 electric/acoustic. Been watching these videos ever since! Moving right along with the chords and working with my progressions every time I pick my guitar up. You're an excellent teacher! I bet an in person session is just a fun experience! I am working into country acoustics. At least that is my goal. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos for beginners like myself and many others start the journey and make their way to becoming great musicians!

    Hey marty I love your videos congratz on getting 1 million subscribers by the way! Learning how to play the guitar has always been something that I wanted to do I just never had a guitar or lived in a place where they would put up with my tone deaf strumming. I recently got a guitar and have been following along your beginner guitar lesson and am learning the chords but I am having trouble finding an actual song to practice on I kind of just strum random chords for a hour or so a day. Could you recommend a song to practice or post a video that goes with your tutorials I know that's asking a lot but I really want to get better.

I guess struggling to keep the strum pattern and switch the cords. If you could do a lesson I think that would help so much as I have been doing your beginners lessons for the past month or more. • @danielkim9959
      @danielkim9959 5 років тому

      CJ Gann it’s probably because your fingertips are not pushing the strings down all the way, or other fingertips from other strings are absorbing the vibrations as it might be grazing the muted string. Basically make sure to have one finger per string that pushes it down all the way.

      Either the guitar is flat on your lap, or you're unnecessarily twisting your wrist. When you play, even practicing, play it like you really would cause it hurts a lot less. Also your fingers should be able to reach without alot of twisting. Unless you have short fingers-

      His point was it makes it a bit hard to find, and to that I'll add that for Marty, a guitar teacher interested in comprehensive lessons for all, it would be worth fixing. I was only paying attention to the thumbnails and I thought there was no lesson 5. I was prepared to move on to lesson 6, and I would've gone to my grave not knowing there was an A major and an E minor chord...not to mention he wouldn't have gotten a pageview from me. Only upon following up on lesson 5's strange absence did I happen by chance to read the actual title.

    Hi Marty. Just love the way you have progressed me thru the chords. My strumming is pathetic. I wish I could make something sound like music as well as you. I keep trying several times a day until finger tips hurt.

      Lydia Willis I do think that you will be a good strummer, and to be as good as Marty? Yeah, well, do you recall when he said he's playing guitar for over 25 years? (I can't remember the exact number) Just keep practising. Plus, your goal isn't to make your fingers hurt, it's to remember the chords. As he said, 5 minutes (tho I do 10 :P) it's perfect for the first two months.

    Played bass for 12 years, stuck with it and never moved to guitar because I didnt think that anything would transfer and I'd be starting from the beginning again. Surprised at how quickly things are coming along especially with Marty's help. One of my biggest fears was always the chords and having the dexterity in my fingers to be able to jump between them. But Marty simple explaining things, and his idea of the anchor points have taken that all away. Youre an amazing teacher and one hell of a dude for putting this online for anyone to access for free. 10/10 human, need more of you in this world. Rock on Marty.

    thank you so much for teaching me (us, really) and i'm very sorry while you were growing up, you had barely no one to help you learn the songs you wanted to know. but look where you are now!! you're amazing, just wanted you let you know that.

    thank you so much again, Marty!

Went from regretting for my whole life that i never learned how to play, to having fun strumming a half-dozen chords & learning more, in less than a week. These vids are a gift! Also, the Gn'R, Nirvana, Tom Petty references are right in my wheelhouse & making the process even more fun. Thanks so much dude.
