  • A new character popping up in Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?! This is a movie reaction to my first time watching Captain Marvel, released in 2019 and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. I certainly was not expecting so much of Fury in this film, but I'm not complaining whatsoever! Carol/Vers and Fury's relationship was great, Goose was a RIOT, and Talos is my new bestie. Samuel L. Jackson and Brie Larson were so great. Make sure to stick around to the end of this video for my full thoughts and review and thank you so much for watching!

Hi, one of KL's mods here!
I know we're all excited for Endgame and what might come after, but *please* be mindful of spoilers and hinting at upcoming movies/TV shows.
KL's made it this far and has managed to stay generally unspoiled, it'd be real shitty to have something ruined, especially now.

Good to hear that KL is possibly/definitely going to be reacting to some/all of the TV shows. Will that include Agents of SHIELD? And the Netflix shows (DD, Defenders, etc.) or only the MCU created projects? Either way, I remain looking forward to whatever she has cooked up! Cheers,

@@havok6280 The story of the Skrulls starting off as a peaceful mercantile race was set by Marvel Comics even before the '60s ended. They met the primitive Kree and the peaceful race the Kree shared their home planet with (the Cotati) and problems ensued. Yes they have been mostly portrayed as evil in the present time, but the concept of the Kree "forcing" the Skrulls to become violent and eventually evil was pretty much set in the '60s story that detailed their history.

Well in the comics Carol's backstory is entirely different and didn't involve the Tesseract. She's the seventh "Captain Marvel" in Marvel Comics instead of the first, and she gained powers accidentally when a Kree device exploded, bonding her DNA with that of Mar-Vell, the first Captain Marvel. Carol spent many years as Ms Marvel, before adopting the "Captain" moniker in 2012. She also wasn't the namesake for the Avengers, and isn't as powerful relative to the other superheroes. In the comics, modern-day Carol Danvers ranks somewhere around the 15th-20th most powerful hero, a heavy hitter but not Thor/Hulk level. In the MCU where her powers originated from an infinity stone, she's one of the strongest heroes of all, easily in the top 3. In fact prior to this movie's release, Kevin Feige stated that Captain Marvel would be the most powerful hero yet introduced. So she's literally the MCU's "Superman" equivalent.
As for the hate this movie receives, that's multi-faceted. Some of it comes from longtime comic book fans who dislike how Carol's origin and backstory was changed so dramatically from the comics. The MCU eliminated Mar-Vell's superheroic history, turning Marvel's first "Captain Marvel" character into a female scientist without any powers, and also eliminating the 5 other Captain Marvels who came before Carol Danvers, and the Skrulls were presented not as evil, but as victims of the Kree. Some hated how her power level was elevated when most of the MCU's powerhouses were toned down/nerfed in the movies. There are also people who simply feel introducing a character this late (immediately before Endgame) and making her so OP, the inspiration for the Avengers name etc was undeserved and disrespectful to the beloved characters they'd been following since Phase 1. You'll understand more after watching Endgame, but some people felt that other characters were degraded or made weaker in order to make Captain Marvel seem more important. And there's the fact that the movie really wasn't all that great- it had good production value and didn't have any major CGI problems, but the writing was nothing special, the villain was lacking, there wasn't a traditional story arc for the lead character, and the way Fury' lost his eye...ugh! Overall it came across as a mediocre, middling film that didn't stand out. All of those things are contributing factors.
But the BIGGEST reason for the hate comes from a small but very vocal subset of MCU fans who have a problem with Brie Larson. They got extremely upset over some comments she made on the press tour, and those comments were later taken out of context by UA-camrs and bloggers who started a social media campaign to boycott the movie and fire the actress, long before the movie was even released. Of course that worked well, since Captain Marvel went on to collect over $1 billion at the box office. And naturally that specific angry subset of haters insisted that it really didn't- they insist theaters were really empty and Disney bought up all the tickets to inflate ticket sale results, etc. Anyway, the anti-Brie Larson crowd accounts for probably 80 percent of the negative response to this movie, although there are people with legitimate gripes. Those valid criticisms just tend to get drowned out by the noise from haters.

    • @janak132
      @janak132 10 місяців тому +7

Yes, pretty much this. The anti-Brie BS was so loud that it was the only "issue" I was aware of at the time of the movie. Many easily affected individuals parroted it. Personally I let movies stand on their own, they're never identical to source material anyway, and I rather liked this one.

    • @snowdenwyatt6276
      @snowdenwyatt6276 10 місяців тому +2

In the comics, a story from the late '60s showed that the Skrulls were generally evil because of what the Kree had done to them in the distant past. So the Skrulls in this story aren't so different from the long stated history of the Skrulls in the comics. They just had humans meet the minority peaceful Skrulls first rather than the majority angry warlike ones.

Dude. I want to copy and paste this. You pretty much covered it fairly accurately. LOL
My only issue with the criticism about her coming in as the top 3 without a build up. Is that this is a film version of a comic book crossover event. All the title characters are mandated to appear in the big fight. (As you may know. The MCU is based upon The Infinity Guantlet) Not every character requires a several film build up. Or the over treaded trope about a hero going through some trial to "earn" their powers. This was an origin story about self discovery.

I think the message of the film is ok... always being held down by the "patriarchy" isn't a terrible message at the time this came out, even though it is overused now. Had Brie not came out and attacked the vast majority of the fans (male) by saying this movie isn't for you.. it may have been received better.
I think the scratch to the eye devalued Fury's story. to say "the last time i trusted someone i lost an eye", and have it be an eye scratch was disappointing.

😺😺😺 I'm so glad you went into this movie without knowing the bias against it. You were able to react and form your own opinion. I personally enjoyed the twists in this one. Talos is a great character! We know that Fury manipulates situations to motivate others...the Avengers, when Coulson dies, with the collectible cards covered in blood...and in this, motivating 'past' Coulson to be a part of his team for many, many years and the story of the lost eye would have undoubtedly work in his favor advancing through the ranks of SHIELD to be the Director.
Maria Rambeau's pioleting skills are Fire!!
Carol Danvers is so, so strong. She was fighting with one arm behind her back until she feed herself if the Kree controller on her neck. She was told her whole life she wasn't good enough...but she kept getting back up. She just needs to re-learn her sense of humour, that the Kree tried to dampen.

So, I think that a lot of the backlash against Carol is that people felt that her power was unearned and that she was made to be more of a badass than she deserved. That's my overall impression, but... that's not where I sit on the whole thing. I really love Carol, and I appreciate that a lot of what she represents is that kind of... undefeatable human spirit, if that makes sense. Yes, it is the whole, "She gets knocked down, but she gets up again" point. That's just very powerful for me.
Now, one thing that I like is that they do the whole switcharoo thing, with the Kree being presented as the good guys at the start... until you start remembering that the Kree were the villains from Guardians of the Galaxy. It "helped" that fans of the comics knew of the Skrulls as villains... but making them refugees in this movie was a beautiful twist. I love it all, honestly.

Okay, so buckle up this is super nerdy and involved, but i’m gonna try to lay out the complicated history of the name Captain Marvel. Captain Marvel was originally the name of a character published by Fawcett comics in the early 1940s who was newsboy Billy Batson who could turn into the super powered Captain Marvel by speaking the word “Shazam.” This character was so popular that he even started outselling the extremely popular Supermen after a few years. DC comics took notice of Fawcett’s sales and sued them claiming copyright infringement in order to shut down sales of the Captain Marvel comic books. Fawcett would probably have prevailed in the case, but it dragged on for years and Fawcett eventually decided to cease publishing the character when sales of superhero comics started dropping after WW2. Another publisher of comics called Timely Comics had published a comic book titled Marvel Comics as the company’s first comic title in the late 1930s. However, by the early 1960s under editor Stan Lee and a bunch of incredibly gifted artists, they were having a bit of a renaissance and had decided to change their name to Marvel Comics. They noticed that Fawcett had allowed the trademark to lapse on the name Captain Marvel and so Marvel snapped it up. They then published a comic about the alien Kree Captain Mar-Vell and that comic featured Air Force officer Carol Danvers as a supporting character. Meanwhile, DC eventually acquired the rights to the original Captain Marvel from Fawcett but realized that Marvel now owned the name. Thus they increasingly began to refer to the original CM character as “Shazam.” Carol became Ms. Marvel in the early 1970s, but Marvel killed off their Captain Marvel character in the early 80s and then some things happened which I won’t go into for spoilery reasons, and eventually they finally gave Carol the name Captain Marvel about 10 or more years ago. Whew. I’m gonna go lie down now. (Edited for spelling)

Kaiielle, in a spoiler-free sentence, some Kree background was also given during the Agents of SHIELD TV show, which a completely ancillary show that takes place in the MCU without being part of the phases. Nothing revealed on that show affects the main Phase 1-Phase 2-Phase 3 continuity, it's a million percent ancillary, so you didn't miss anything of value in terms of context to this film.
I'm 43 and I've been a huge Carol Danvers fan since I was 12 (there's a particular arc of X-Men she's a supporting character in that I always go back to, issues 159-171 if you ever want to circle back to source materiel). This movie did not disappoint. I really enjoyed it.
Carol's origin here was tweaked slightly from the comic version but keeps a lot off the same elements -- Yon-Rogg attacks Mar-Vell, a Kree device explodes, Carol gets powers, and when she initially has powers she doesn't know her name is Carol. The main difference in the comics is the device isn't a lightspeed engine and the comics Mar-Vell is male. But all in all the movie origin skews close to the comics origin and I do appreciate that. (Whereas the movie origins of Iron Man, Thor and Captain America are 100% comics accurate, this is more like 65%)
Totally get what you mean about Jude Law's performance. In the comics, Yon-Rogg is sort of a not well-written character, just a mustache-twirling villain "I hate Earthlings" alien stereotype. So they had more or less a blank slate when developing him here, and I kind of wish they had made him slightly more interesting.
Now comics Minn-Erva is very interesting so I liked that they made her a badass with a sniper rifle here.
There's another character in this film I love in the comics but I will wait for you to get to a later Marvel project to say who he or she is and why because anything I say is absolutely a spoiler and I want to respect your no spoiler policies. So, to be continued.
Another source material thing.... the Kree-Skrull War is a little different in the comics but still enjoyable. If you want to check it out it is in Avengers issues 89-98 from the early 1970s, it's been reprinted in book form several times and it's considered a Marvel benchmark.

I mean, of course this wasn't a perfect movie, but I feel like the people that absolutely hated it are partially letting their own personal issues, whatever they may be, color their opinions. I personally feel like it was a 3.5 out of 5 stars. It was entertaining, it didn't have any major glaring plot holes, and it even subverted a couple of tropes like the old, "why don't you put down that gun and fight me like a man" nonsense that Jude Law's character tried to pull at the end.

Hi KL! Again, appreciate your detailed commentary and feelings. On the first half weirdness and Jude Law weirdness, I wonder if part of that is the Kree disconnect. I know when I saw this for the first time, I remembered the link to Ronan and Guardians from the moment they splashed the "Hala, homeworld of the Kree civilization" thing at the very beginning, and so I also felt some weirdness but for me it was some weirdness about the fact that these were all "bad guys" who'd been destroying innocent planets in Guardians, and so their general coldness and douchebaggery in this film was off-putting but also fit. I was curious how our hero was going to come out of that environment and they kept my attention as it unfolded. And I kind of liked that the douchebaggery came back at the end when Yon-Rogg was facing Carol and holsters his weapons to call for a "no-powers" fight - because he knows full well he has no hope unless he can con her into going easy on him. It was painful to watch (cuz douchebaggery) and was yet so right. I think a lot of friction about this movie is of that ilk - there's a lot of "wrongness" about it that I suspect is meant to be there. I'd be interested to know what the writers/producers intentions really were regarding how they meant those aspects to feel to audiences.

Oh yes, this takes place in the 1990s. Chronologically movie wise this is kind of 2nd in order at this point after Captain America. But I think it's placed here for the end credits scene and because of her importance to the wider universe. Would think.

First off, LOVED the Galaxy Quest reference "We Need Your Help!..." Very cute! Now then, for me personally, this is simultaneously Brie Larson's least AND most important role; LEAST important, because, let's face it - at the end of the day, it's really just a comic book film; MOST important, because it put Brie on my radar. Before this, I'd seen her in a couple rather minor roles (21 Jump Street, Trainwreck....) Certainly nothing so significant as "Room", "Short Term 12", "Just Mercy" or even "The Glass Castle". Then, I found "Basmati Blues", which INSTANTLY became my favorite film! While that one is little more than a silly rom-com, it's also a MUSICAL - our Brie SINGS for us!
Back to this film, I was SO excited to see it in the theater, because Captain Marvel is essentially their flagship character (I mean, her name is Captain MARVEL, after all) - their answer to D.C.'s Wonder Woman (or, even Superman!)
Fun trivia facts: Gemma Chan, who plays Minn-Erva also stars in The Eternals as Sersi.
Also, Brie Larson and Samuel Jackson have been buddies since they first worked together in Kong: Skull Island, (Along with Tom HIddleston, Clark Gregg and John C. Reilly), so their chemistry in this film is genuine.

When I saw you processing what just happened, I instantly said "Yes, that's how he lost his eye. lol". Here's something kinda funny to think about. Peter Parker (Spiderman) is a Star Wars fan. I'm sure you're getting good advice on what to listen to in regards to some of the backlash to this film. It was, in my opinion, completely unwarranted and led to a lot of agressively bad faith interpretations of some of Brie's comments during promotion. I don't think the film's perfect, but I do think the reaction was disproportionate from a certain subsection.

Loved this movie (& reaction) & yes I would have it top middle. This movie (first female MCU lead) & Black Panther (first non white MCU lead) were the first two movies I remember getting spammed poor reviews. Due to all the Infinity War/End Game hype & both those movies being strong, with strong box office numbers it gets forgotten. I don't mind legitimate criticism & we all have different tastes, but the moment Kevin said we are introducing Marvels strongest character to date into the MCU, Captain Marvel, the trolling started. Way way before the movie was released. No doubt some criticism would be legit, but in the real World culture wars were blowing up. DC comic movies were having the same review bombing/spamming which filtered into all Warner Brother movies, and soon the same would happen to Disney's other projects not long after (I know DC had other separate issues too). Anyway it's around this time in the MCU that good honest reactors (& reviews) become more important, thank you for yours (again 🙂)

I'm super glad you enjoyed Captain Marvel 🌟 Unfortunately, It gets a lot of undeserved hate. The twist with the Skrulls got most people since in the comics they are the antagonists. Watching Captain Marvel for the first time I went in with bias against the Skrulls since I had already read the most major comicbook storyline with them. It's almost like how Carol was brainwashed to believe they were the enemy. So it was cool to see you get emotional for them and their situation. Being hunted down and forced off of their home planet. I also enjoyed seeing Agent Coulson again. I guess my only gripe is that I wish he was in the movie more. In any case, I'm very excited to see your reaction to Endgame.

    Muther-Flerkin!
So, this movie is okay. I was still traumatized by Infinity War, so despite this being an okay movie, I had trouble getting into it when it came out. But, I think that's more about me than the movie. I know there are folks out there who really hate this movie. I'm not one of them. It's not my favorite, but it is an okay stand-alone origin story. My favorites are definitely the origin stories. I like meeting new characters. Of course, it's the MCU, so new characters will not be 'new' in future movies. That's just a given.
I agree... I liked Carol and Fury's relationship. Fun, and a little quippy. The CGI de-aging on Samuel L. Jackson was very well done. It didn't feel like 'Creature from the Uncanny Valley'. Coulson's, a little less so. But, still pretty good.
Ah... the 90's. Do I miss it? No, not really. I can easily get lost in nostalgia, but it's not healthy for folks who actually live in the present. That being said, I was a frequent Blockbuster and Radio Shack patron. I don't miss Blockbuster. I do miss Radio Shack. These days, building a computer is just assembling prefabricated pieces. Back in the day, you could go to Radio Shack and purchase components to solder together to make stuff. I do miss that. But, my hands aren't nearly as steady as they used to be, and big globs of solder make electronics glitchy. :)
Thank you, as always, for the watch. I'm looking forward to whatever comes next!
    Take care!

It's fine for what it is as an origin story, though Jude Law and his group were completely forgettable. Ben Mendelsohn's Talos is one of my favorite characters; he's brilliant and dangerous to his enemies, but is incredibly nice and a bit of a goofball to his friends. Brie Larson and Samuel L Jackson's banter is also highlight; they're friends in real life, so their scenes feel natural. And as an 80s/90s kid, I enjoyed all the little bits of nostalgia. • @ArmouredPhalanx
    @ArmouredPhalanx 10 місяців тому +2

So now for some background... Captain Marvel has a bit of a complicated history in the comics. Marvel Comics wasn't always Marvel Comics... they used to be known as Timely Comics. By the time Timely became Marvel, there was already a hero at another company (Fawcett Comics) called Captain Marvel. The Fawcett Captain Marvel bore enough of a similarity to Superman that DC sued them, and Fawcett ended up going out of business, and DC bought out their assets... they didn't really care about their new acquisition at the time - they already had an impressive stable - and they let the trademark on Captain Marvel lapse. Timely had already become Marvel at this point, and saw an opportunity to capitalize on the company name and created a Captain Marvel (an alien named Mar Vell) of their own. The original (Marvel) Captain Marvel ended up dying in the comics, and his powers and/or moniker ended up getting inherited by a number of different characters over the years (sparing some of the details here for fear of spoilers... And, you know, boring anyone actually reading this...). One of them was Carol Danvers who became 'Ms. Marvel' (another name that may be familiar at this point). By the 2010s she had dropped the 'Ms.' and taken on the full 'Captain Marvel' name instead.
...Meanwhile, over at DC, after the Creation of Marvel's Captain Marvel, they realized their error in leaving the door open, and tried pushing their acquired Captain Marvel... he became a fairly significant and popular character in the DC universe, but they'd lost the right to use the 'Captain Marvel' name, so they marketed him by his power-up catch-phrase 'Shazam', while still using 'Captain Marvel' in the comics... Buuuuut eventually everyone just started to call him Shazam anyway, so DC eventually gave up and in the last few years just calls him Shazam as well.
...Wow, sorry about that. As for this movie... yeah, this movie (at least publicly) was a bit of a victim of the culture wars (dumb people upset for dumb reasons etc.). I don't think it's the strongest MCU movie by any means, but it's still fun, and a good introduction to the character (I do have one issue with 'The Avengers' getting their name from her, definitely not how it happens in the comics at all... also Captain America being the 'The First Avenger' in the 40s is a bit of a head scratcher now and unnecessary). It definitely doesn't deserve the flak it gets from certain quarters. But for all the complaints, it did more than fine at the box office, so all good in the end.

Others have informed you that Skrulls are almost always villains in the source material, and I'm sure that's what most viewers expected them to be. So you weren't the only one taken aback by the twist that they're all refugees in the MCU. Another surprise was the revelation that Mar-Vell was a woman -- that character is a man in the comics.

This movie has gotten so much hate because of Brie Larsen and I've never understood it. In a stand alone movie, I don't think we've gotten a better depiction of the close relationship between two women that had nothing to do with men. I really liked Brie's portrayal of Captain Marvel but then I've got personal experience with women in the military and she fits the ones I've known to a T. She's no nonsense but she has a very dry and expressive kind of humour. I like that she's so calm but sharply witty. Also I actually love how much the dudebros on the internet were crying about this movie and how it was so "woke" and shit. I think it's a great movie. It had a storyline that was to the point without any need for being overly convoluted. I also liked the expectation subversion with the Skrulls, though I already knew the Kree were the bad guys, so I was wondering what direction they'd take this movie. The interactive dialogue is right up there for MCU movies.
The truth is, too many people compare this to the multi hero movies and it's just not fair. No stand alone is as good as the multis and that's just a fact. Judged just by the stand alones, this one is in my top ten. Also this movie came at a really unfortunate time because everyone just wanted endgame and there was a lot of anger that they'd make a "filler" instead of just jumping to endgame. A lot of the problem is that Marvel made a mistake by releasing the timeline early and this movie was always going to be the "red headed stepchild" keeping people from getting to endgame faster.

I always thought this was a good film. Really my only true complaints were about the villains whether it was the Supreme Intelligence or Jude Law's character Yon-Rogg, they were never a match for Carol so once she powered up the final fight scenes were a bit underwhelming. Carol and Fury together were the best parts for me and since l love the TV show Agents of Shield so much (which l recommend you watch either for your channel or on your own time) seeing Coulson back was fun

This is one of the more..."okay" movies from Marvel. I was generally disappointed because they really changed Captain Marvel from the comics. I knew her as Ms. Marvel, which is what her original name was for decades. Captain Marvel used to be the name of one of DCs heroes, and the name escapes me but I believe it was Shazam that was named Captain Marvel before Marvel purchased the name.
Anyways, after her name changed her character in the comics drastically plummeted as a likeable or relatable hero. They didn't just change her heroine identity - they changed her character almost entirely. She even became classified more as a super villain than a superhero, and acted no less like one. Contrast to what she used to represent as Ms. Marvel, it was like a complete reversal and a butchering of her character. They used the unpopular "update" in the movie, which turned lots of comic readers off. It turned me off because of how I remember Ms. Marvel (kind, ambitious, strong, protective, generally happy with her life, and stood on her values) versus the new version (strong, cocky, rude, cruel, and downright always angry). I've seen the movie and while I don't think it's terrible, I really wish they'd of gone with her original origins and finished her movie a lot sooner. I was really excited about the movie when I heard about it years ago, but it slowly faded when I learned more about it.
Sorry for such a long comment. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie and your reactions were priceless as always. Btw, not sure if you picked up on it, but the plane they were flying to space was the Quinjet used later by the Avengers.
Great reaction, and I really can't wait to see your Endgame reaction. Bring lots of tissues and your favorite assorted snack. You'll need both of em! 😊
EDIT: They seemed to use Ms. Marvels positive character traits for the movie, which is something that I believe was a wise move based on how badly her comics were doing.

I liked that you mentioned Ronan was forgettable. Maybe he was, but as someone who lived through the MCU as it came out and rewatched each movie whenever a new movie came out, we've had ample time to memorize extraneous details. I have to remember that people reacting once to each movie will not have the same recollection, so with that in mind, you did really well!

I really appreciate you saying this, thank you. I get quite a few comments from some folks over these movie reactions that seem frustrated by me over certain things, and I tend to assume they're forgetting that they are 1) Watching a *first time viewing reaction*, not a "I've watched this 10 times, here's my in-depth reaction and review", and 2) They've had years with these films and have probably read the Wiki a dozen times and been part of online discussions about the movies and maybe also read the comics and also have watched plenty of reactions before mine. So thank you for understanding where I'm at with this journey!

I really enjoyed this movie and your reaction. This may be an oversimplification, but I think some people confuse not liking Brie Larson with not liking the film. I loved the story, loved the interplay between Carol and Fury, and had a really good time. 🐈

You not immediately picking up that the film takes place in the past is understandable. You watch these films without seeing trailers, you watch them in a pure way. For the rest of us we watch the trailers which showed the blockbuster part in evey one plus the 90s music helped to prime us for it being set up in the 90s. So don't blame yourself too much.

I have been with you from minute one on the idea that even telling someone that "Movie X is awesome" or "Movie Y is so sad! Bring tissues!" can be spoilers and can affect how someone reacts to a movie. I've tried real hard to avoid doing anything like that in my comments on your channel. But you're so far into the MCU now that I don't think it will spoil anything to share my actual rankings of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies I've seen (I haven't seen them all... I fell behind on the more recent ones). I'll just leave out the ones you haven't seen. My list also includes some other random Marvel movies that are _not_ part of the MCU because I originally made this list as part of a discussion with my cousin and we were ranking the X-Men universe, and MCU + the leftovers as two separate lists. So, I'll leave the non-MCU stuff out as well.
1 Avengers: Infinity War 19 Doctor Strange
2 Captain America: Civil War 20 Captain Marvel
3 Captain America: The Winter Soldier 21
    4 22
    5 23
    6 Iron Man 24
    7 25
8 26 Avengers: Age of Ultron
    9 Thor: Ragnarok 27
    10 Spider-Man: Homecoming 28
11 The Avengers 29 Black Panther
12 Guardians of the Galaxy 30 Iron Man 3
13 Ant-Man 31 Captain America: The First Avenger
    14 32 Ant-Man and the Wasp
15 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 33 Thor: The Dark World
    16 34
    17 35 The Incredible Hulk
    18 Thor 36 Iron Man 2
Hope you're having a great week. Looking forward to "Avengers: Endgame" and hearing what you think about it. Also, if I'm not mistaken you said "Constantine" is coming up. Another movie I look forward to seeing your reaction to. ✌🤓

To be fair to you about the confusion on the time line of this movie, a lot of the marketing and trailers kind of revealed to us in advance that Fury was going to be de-aged and patchless and the setting was going to be in the mid-90s. The movie does that legwork a bit more slowly, and you can pick it up along the way, we just went in with that foreknowledge. Also, can’t wait until you see Mallrats so the Stan Lee cameo makes more sense.
I don’t get the people who hate this movie, I had a good time with it for many of the reasons you mentioned. By and large, most women I know who’ve seen it enjoy it and a lot of the dislike seems to come from dudes, correlation not causation, just what I’ve noticed.

Thanks for watching! To your last point... men have been the main characters in a lot of cinema since it began. Yes, there have been lots of lead female roles, and female roles in general, and I'm not denying that. But generally speaking, the industry does lean very heavily male, especially for lead/primary roles. I mean, the Bechdel Test is a thing. 😂 I'd be interested in knowing ratios and % breakdowns. Anyway what I'm getting at is that women enjoy seeing women lead in stories and be the main focus and that's probably why a lot of women enjoy Captain Marvel. This is also for sure one of the reasons Barbie has done so well on its opening weekend. That is 100% a film targeted for women and every woman that I know in their 20s-30s has either already seen it or is excited to see it. And I include myself in that! I'll be getting a ticket for it pretty soon - it's one I don't want to miss experiencing in theatres.

@@kaiielle and that makes total sense, I could see it appealing less to men, I just don’t get the strong hatred that kind of bubbled up around this at the time. I can only chalk it up to blatant sexism, I really haven’t heard compelling arguments otherwise. I am often baffled by people getting up in arms about movies and such. When a series has an entry I don’t like, I mostly just kind of shrug and move on, even series I deeply enjoy. At least one Terminator, Jurassic, and Batman movie were disappointing to me, but it didn’t conjure up a need to hate either the films or the people involved. As someone who has a ton of Star Wars props, lego sets, costumes, and other related merch in his house, I think some people take movies a bit too seriously.

Captain America and the Winter Soldier - Fury tells Steve "The last time I trusted someone I lost an eye" and in this movie Fury tells Goose "I'm picking you up now... I'm trusting you to not eat me"
And to sate something you liked about this movie, When you get a chance watch Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

As a 90's kid, I enjoyed this movie. It was interesting storytelling, and I loved getting Fury's back story. Although I agree that it wasn't a "great" film, I don't think it's as bad as others make it out to be either. I think it was just overshadowed by the magnitude of the events in Infinity War, and people's anxiousness towards wanting to see Endgame.
