    First off thank you so much for watching!! This movie was amazing! Being aware that I did not watch the extended version of this I will be posting a review on Patreon of a video with all the scenes cut out! Super excited for that because I don't want to miss a thing! I did make sure that I have the extended versions for the upcoming reaction/reviews!

      Extended versions are actually rubbish. The deleted scenes were deleted for a reason: they suck. If I were you going forward, view theatrical versions of films. Watch them the way we watched them and they way director/producers wanted it to be watched.

      @@CoryGasaway Extended scenes at risk of being missed: 1• Frodo and Sam's first meeting with the elves, providing context for Valinor and the elves journey there, as referenced throughout the films and seen at the end of the Return of the King(connects to the passing of the elves in the beginning of their leaving the shire when Frodo and Sam are near the Old Forest by the Shire which leads them to eventually bumping into Merry And Pippin!
      (An epic scene with Gandalf in Rivendell was also removed as well.)
      2. Aragorn singing the Lay of Luthien, providing a parallel between the events of the Beren and Luthien and Aragorn's relationship with Arwen of which every reactor channel I’ve seen makes the connection and it pulls them into a deeper understanding of their relationship every single time.
      3. Aragorn kneeling at his mother's grave, giving him some additional backstory for the viewer.
      4. Gandalf explaining to Frodo about the corruptive power of the Ring, and how it will strain the Fellowship from the inside, foreshadowing Boromir's downfall.
      5. Sam singing a lament for Gandalf, providing more emotional weight to Gandalf's death, referencing the start of the movie and strengthening the connection between him and the Hobbits ( also highlights Tolkien's love of song and poetry in the books).
      6. Galadriel giving the gifts to the Fellowship, providing context for their appearance in later films, as well as drawing a parallel between Gimli's gift and the events of the Silmarillion (Fëanor & Galadriel).
      That’s just the beginning. Including several removed scenes between Aragorn & Galadriel and Aragorn with her husband Celeborn!
      7• also the opening explaining Hobbits & their culture to the viewers, so they have a better understanding of these peoples we will be following which also was the direct full chapter called Concerning Hobbits.

      @Makkaru112 5 місяців тому +49

      @@garybassin1651 nope. He was inspired by Ødin! All the way down to the ring he wears and the steed he rides! Tolkien was a veteran of the First World War and many other battles such as The Battle Of Somme etc. his works of art were to give back to the England as a form of restoring lost mythologies that he himself was a master of since he was a top professor of philology at Oxford. He did ALOT of his writing while in the trenches during WWI during small “breaks” while down in those trench forts built into the ground. And while he eldest son was in the Second World War; his Lord Of The Rings writings was strictly created above all else to give his eldest something to read while stationed wherever he was stationed. I forgot that part. They sent letters back and forth about it all the time. He was also the one and only son that actually protected his fathers legacy and work. A lot of his other work were put together BY his son after his father passed away. It’s well worth to react to the documentary behind the scenes film the director and crew and cast created together as well as the interview with the son Christopher Tolkien who you get to sort of enjoy a nice indoor and outdoor chat for like what came to about 1-2 hours of wonderful footage from an era that really must not be forgotten.
      His work shed a light on things like The Finnish Kalevala, Norwegian Elder Edda, The Welsh Mabinogion, The Norwegian Nibelungen, The Indian Bhagvagita & Several Irish Folklore + other Cultural things! The man also restored and translated ancient relics for the governments as one everyone trusted. Much of what’s in our dictionary come from his efforts as well.
      Anytime he spoke & even posted several comments into the paper as an editorial or response to certain issues as a very involved man for the world and the environment everyone turned their head to listen to him as everyone knew his worth and respected him greatly. His works show how NOT to glorify war; shows in the films if you pay close attention while watching the next films. Sharing what you know now via the after thoughts at the end of the second film! Remember. Extended edition. There is a lot missed out on especially in the second movie regarding Boromir backstory which there is much more in the books but the films WANTED to keep more but the cinemas literally harangued him into making a “theatrical cut” which is why you have two versions. The real version and the “theatrical cut”. It was all to make more money for the company that is the theatres/cinemas. To get more showings in per day during the year. And believe me. People were camping outside and travelling the country to watch it MORE THAN ONCE.
      His creations literally lead to inspiring the most currently famous books games & movies we all literally wouldn’t have enjoyed and be touched to our souls core without him and his spiritually connected brilliance. That and he was a philologist professor at Oxford first and foremost which covers so many things. Not just linguistic. The man was a true genius and Jack of all trades but ultimately LOVED the simple life.
      The inspiration for Lord of the Rings was not any war, but author J.R.R. Tolkien's love of language. Especially Welsh, Finnish and Old English. He lamented the loss of any true English folklore, that was wiped out after the Norman invasion of 1066, so Tolkien wrote many books on these new "legends" he came up with himself. Much of which is centered around three languages he fully developed himself. Two Elven languages and Dwarvish.
      They all have alphabets, syntax and vocabularies and can be learned. Tolkien did draw upon his personal experience in the trenches of World War ONE, not Two, as inspiration for some parts, most notably, the Dead Marshes that Frodo and Sam and Gollum pass through in The Two Towers. But war was not the inspiration for the entire series.
      World Of Warcraft. Skyrim, Harry Potter, Diablo, D&D, even Warhammer and so forth wouldn’t have. Existed without taking inspiration from and or completely ripping off from Tolkien. Many great documentaries to react to about him also more about him and AWESOME stuff from the hours and hours of behind the scenes documentaries from the DVDs of the movies which are also on UA-cam and I can send you a playlist to react to from top to bottom.
      I’d also like to explain Gandalf a bit too: Tolkien, drew alot of inspiration from the norse mythology. Magical rings, Gandalf (Staff elf in old norse), Gandalfs outfit (Ødin), Gandalfs title 'the grey wanderer' (Ødin), Shadowfaxe (The horses of day and night Rhimfaxe and Skinfaxe), Trolls, elves, dwarves etc.
      * Ødin had a legendary horse, Sleipnir, who had eight legs and was said to be one of the greatest horses known to the gods. Gandalf had Shadowfax, who had no equal among horses in Middle-earth and could understand the speech of men.
      * Ødin’s legendary gear-the spear Gungnir and the ring Draupnir-could have influenced Gandalf’s legendary sword Glamdring or, more likely, the magic staff he carries, while the ring possibly influenced Gandalf’s possession of the ring Narya (Sturlson 145).
      * Gandalf and Ødin both receive new wisdom as a result of sacrifice, as Gandalf is reincarnated after his fight with the Balrog, and Ødin gains power and wisdom after hanging himself on the tree Yggdrasil for nine days (Sigfusson 80-85).
      * One of the most apparent ways in which Gandalf and Ødin are alike is that they both take the shape of an old, grey beggar with a wide-brimmed hat and grey cloak when they wander the mortal world and deal with the inhabitants (Pitts 7).
      * Gandalf and Ødin are virtually reflections of each other, as can be observed through examining their gear and animal companions, the way they sacrificed themselves and were rewarded with wisdom, and the fact that they walk the earth as old men in tattered clothing.
      The Renowned Steeds of Gandalf and Odin
      Gandalf and Ødin both have renowned horses and staves with magical properties. Ødin carries the legendary spear Gungnir, which is said never to miss its mark when thrown (Sturlson 145); however, he also carries it as his staff when he wanders the earth as an old man.
      In the Poetic Edda, the Valkyrie Sigrdrifa advises Sigurd about the magical application of runes and tells him that there are runes inscribed on the tip of Gungnir (Sigfusson 291). This spear could be a parallel to Glamdring, the sword that was forged for the Goblin wars but is most likely influential to the staff Gandalf carries on his journeys.
      Strikingly similar to Shadowfax, Ødin possesses a legendary horse named Sleipnir, who has eight legs and can run on the ground and through the air at great speeds. This sounds very similar, in some ways, to Tolkien’s description of Shadowfax in The Two Towers, “Shadowfax tossed his head and cried aloud as if a trumpet had summoned him to battle. Then he sprang forward. Fire flew from his feet; night rushed over him” (Tolkien 228).

      Here's a bit of trivia about the sets in the movie: Many, if not all, of them were actually filmed against a green-screen background, often in the nearest handy shed (no kidding!). The backgrounds, the "set", was then projected onto the green screen electronically. This also came in handy in a few scenes, notably in Bag End when Gandalf's height was directly compared against one of the hobbits' height.

    40:40 A lot of folks say this. Problem is, it would not work. Not least because the Great Eagles are NOT immune to the power of the Ring.

    These films are my Star Wars, my Casablanca. I was 20 when the first one was released, and had been waiting for almost a decade for that singular bit of film culture that would come to define my generation. Musically, we had grunge, but cinematically, we had...nothing really. Until this - a massive cultural event wherein no effort or expense was spared to create an immersive, authentic experience. And I'm so glad these films exist, but also so sad that this kind of movie could not be made today...if for no other reason than it was shot, on location, in one big filming session (i.e. they filmed all 3 movies at once, before any was released), making it a big, expensive risk. Studios today are allergic to risk - they want sure things, and it's hard to see now, but LotR was the opposite of a sure thing in the late '90s, when people were trying to get it greenlit. More importantly, today, world-building is done via complex CGI, but people can't exist within CGI...they can't interact with it. And CGI doesn't allow for the world to give back to the actors, providing an atmosphere that helps construct the verisimilitude of the narrative. CGI is limited by the imaginations of its creators, whereas real life is infinite in its variability.
    Computer graphics certainly added to the world of the Lord of the Rings, but they were only ever intended as enhancement. These films were largely shot in very real places, and as such, the geography of Middle-Earth, the relationships between the various races and their land, and between various races (and cultures within races), feel real, they feel true. For example, the existence of an actual Hobbiton made Hobbits more believable, and the striking juxtaposition of the Nazgûl with the bucolic bliss of Hobbit life in the Shire was only made possible because these locations were tangible, in the audience's mind.
    Basically what I'm saying is that, for all its flaws, Hollywood gifted us these incredible films, and I am grateful to have them (and jealous of people who are still getting to experience them for the first time!).

    Boromir, the guy killed with the arrows, was a great warrior. He came from Gondor, not far from Mordor where Sauron has his tower. His father is the Steward, last of a long line who've ruled Gondor since their King went out to fight the Lord of the Nazgul (ringwraiths) and never returned. Boromir wants to save his people and believes only strength of arms can accomplish that. He comes from the same race as Aragorn and you can tell by the way he looked at the shattered sword in Rivendell that he'd love to believe in the glorious history of that race (the men of Numenor) and he'd love to hope. But being a warrior, he thinks that would be a weakness. He sees only the power of the ring and he wants the power to defeat Sauron. But that's exactly why he shouldn't have it. The reason Frodo can withstand the evil of the ring is that he doesn't want power or have ambition to rule anyone. Another side to Boromir is summed up when he says to Aragorn, '...they will say the lordS of Gondor have returned'. There can only be one lord of Gondor, one king. He had also asked his father why he wasn't king since it had been more than a thousand years that his bloodline had been Stewards. He was a complex character, very human, both good and bad.

      Out of the entire fellowship, Boromir was the only one that needed the ring, in a way, he saw it as the only way to save his people, which were fighting a losing battle.
      If any of the others were tempted, it would have been greed cause none of them have any real use for the ring besides it. The elves, dwarves and hobbits were still safe at that time.

    All the location filming was done in New Zealand, because it has all the types of landscapes described in the books. I believe the Shire setting is still maintained for fans to visit.
    Pipeweed is simply the Middle Earth name for tobacco.
    Tolkien grew up in rural England. He absolutely hated what mechanization did to his beloved countryside after the First World War, and that was part of the inspiration for this story.
    'Orc' is the Middle Earth word for 'goblin'.
    As you've seen, the One Ring uses people in its attempts to get back to Sauron. It used Boromir's desire to help his people.

    This is my absolute most favourite movie series ever! Loved your Harry Potter reactions, can't wait to see what you think of LotR. As a massive Tolkien nerd, I'm definitely gonna be commenting lore throughout this marathon.
    1. Is Gandalf a wizard? That's basically just what Men call him. Gandalf (along with Saruman, Sauron, the giant eagles, and the balrog) are part of a divine group of beings known as Maiar. They're essentially minor gods/angels. Insanely powerful. Gandalf and Saruman, however, were restricted in what they were allowed to use in Middle Earth.
    2. LotR was filmed in New Zealand! You can actually visit Hobbiton and some of the other filming locations.
    3. Believe it or not, Mordor (the place with the lava) is actually described in the books as cold.
    4. How long do elves live? Forever. They're immortal unless killed. Even then their spirits can be reincarnated in Valinor (the original home of the elves aka the Undying Lands (it comes up later in the movies)).
    5. You were wondering about the goblins? There's orcs, goblins, and Uruk-hai. Orcs and goblins for the most part are the same thing just an interchangeable term. Uruk-hai are a subtype of orc bred by Saruman. They're larger and stronger.
    Loved this first reaction! It just gets better from here on out!

      No Mordor isn’t cold. In the mountains surrounding Mordor it may be cold due to elevation, but Mordor is a land located in the southern part of Middle Earth. It is a barren wasteland, much like a desert. Deserts sometimes get cold at night, but I wouldn’t say they are cold in general. Far from it.

    Like someone commented, it's a good idea to have subtitles on, lots of "weird" names and sometimes the dialog can get a little muddy.

      Galadriel is about 15 thousand years old AFAIK. Or more
      The problem lies in how many Sun years each year of the Trees was equivalent to, in Valinor.
      The figure out 8000 years old comes up when you consider the 130 years of Galadriel under the Trees as equivalent to 10 Sun years.
      However, other more credible sources day that reach out the 130 years she lived under the Trees was more than 100 Sun years... So that would be 13 thousand years of age when she left Valinor with the other Noldor
      she was born in the time of the trees, so time was not counted by sun years.

      @@jack-o_lantern Umm… You are wrong about this… Rowling’s Harry Potter series was influenced a lot by Tolkien’s LOTR work… There are a lot of parallels in both the worlds - Gandalf and Dumbledore, Sauron and Voldemort, Ringwraiths and Dementors, Wormtongue and Wormtail, Gollum and Dobby, Shelob and Aragog, Mirror of Galadriel and Pensieve, One Ring and Horcruxes, etc…
      Here are excerpts from a biography titled JK Rowling: A Biography, written by Sean Smith and published in 2003,
      "One of the books she did read during her university days was The Lord of the Rings, the famous fantasy novel by the Oxford Professor, JRR Tolkien. Joanne became a great admirer of the saga and her 1000-page volume containing the entire story became battered and worn over the years." (p. 90)
      "Joanne invariably had The Lord of the Rings with her [in Portugal], which she had first read when she was nineteen, but was one of the books she wanted to take to Portugal. Maria Ines confirms that she always had her copy with her and Jorge recalls that she could not put the book down." (p. 108)
      This suggests Rowling had read The Lord of the Rings and that she read it attentively, repeatedly, and during the time period she was framing the Potter…
      Also, “Tolkien fans parrot that sentiment about everything fantasy” because Tolkien is often referred to as the ‘Father of modern fantasy or high fantasy’ since his work has influenced almost every other fantasy work that came later…

    Boromir is from Gondor which has been fighting Mordor, which it borders, for years. You were right about him and the Ring - he only wants the Ring because he believes it can be used to defend his people but the Ring uses that desire against him to get him to take it and ultimately return itself to Sauron.
    Isildur's bloodline to the throne of Gondor has long been broken and it has been ruled by stewards until the line is restored. As he is dying Boromir feels he has failed the fellowship and his people, but Aragorn promises him he will not let the White City of Minas Tirith, the capital of Gondor, or its people fall. Boromir fully believes Aragorn will get it done and then acknowledges Aragorn's loyalty and leadership by calling him brother, captain, king.

    Just wanted to answer a few of your questions:
    Pipe weed isn't weed as we know it. It's just tobacco.
    You are correct that the elves have magic but Gandalf is a wizard.
    Merry and Pippin are cousins.
    Hobbits tend to get a bit older than humans but Bilbo is exceptionally old even for Hobbits. As seen with Gollum the ring prolongs the bearer's life and they also don't age visibly that much (in Bilbo's case at least ;D)
    Sauron's fortress called Barad-dûr wasn't built recently, it's thousands of years old at this point.
    The things that are under the mud and slime are Uruk-hai, an enhanced type of orc kinda, that Saruman bred.
    Tolkien developed multiple languages for his universe. There are two elven languages called Quenya and Sindarin. Most of what you hear in the movie is Sindarin because it is the more common one at this time in Middle Earth.
    Elves are immortal. Their bodies (called hroa) can be slain but their spirit (fea) will go to the halls of Mandos (one of the 'gods') where they will remain until they are reincarnated (this is a very simplified explanation).
    I laughed out loud when you explained how you would take the eagles to drop the ring in Mount doom. It's a discussion as old as the books are there I think. But it couldn't be done. The eagles are very powerful creatures and the more powerful you are the more the ring affects you. There is more to it but I won't go into it because of spoilers.
    Galadriel (the white elf lady) is also the one narrating in the beginning. You also see her shortly. She is one of the three elves who get the three elven rings and one of the oldest and most powerful elves in Middle Earth.

    A wonderful reaction!! Nothing better than watching new adventurers into the amazing world of JRR Tolkien!
    Here follows a no spoiler, mini-explanation (very simplified) to help fully appreciate The Lord of the Rings.
    The author is JRR Tolkien, who was an Oxford professor, a linguist/philologist and historian. He literally spent his entire life creating the world of Middle-earth, the novel published in 1954. His purpose was to write a mythology history for England, including a creation story inspired by his devout Catholic faith. The languages heard in the movie were created, completely, by Tolkien. Several dialects of Elvish, the dwarf language, and the Black Speech of Mordor.
    In Tolkien’s world, Eru Ilúvatar is the Creator. Aiding in fulfilling his purpose are the Valar (think archangels) and Maia (angels). Some (not all) of the Valar and Maia have significant roles through the ages. Also, a few Valar and Maia are evil. The events in LOTR take place in the Third Age, with the forging of the great rings and battle seen in the prologue occurring in the Second Age. In other words, there is a ton of history over thousands of years leading up to this particular story.
    Sauron, the Dark Lord, is a Maia. Gandalf and Saruman are also Maia, and they (along with three others) were sent by Eru Ilúvatar to Middle-earth to aid in the fight against Sauron. They are called the Istari, or Wizards. Their magical powers are limited but they are still very powerful. The “old man” appearance was to appeal as wise men but does not directly translate to being aged as they are literally ageless beings. They were sent to guide, instruct, and impart wisdom, not to be warriors or solve problems, hence the rare use of "magic". Incidentally, the Balrog is also a Maia (one of the evil ones), which is why Gandalf had to confront it.
    Elves are immortal. They can be killed in battle, but their souls return to Valinor (the Undying Lands), the dwelling place of the Valar, and are given a new body. Valinor is separated from Middle-earth, reachable only by ships built by the elves at the Grey Havens. You will often see some calling it "heaven" as a simplistic way to describe it, but this is wrong. Valinor is called the Undying Lands because immortal flesh-and-blood elves dwell there in harmony with the Valar, who are spirit beings with a bodily form. Valinor is not an after-death spirit realm like heaven. Aside from a handful of notable exceptions, elves are the only race to ever set foot on Valinor.
    There have been only two other elf and human unions, so Arwen and Aragorn are very unique. In all cases, the elf maiden had to choose mortality to be with the human man she loved. This is a BIG deal, just keep that in mind. Lord Elrond of Rivendell is the child of one such union. He was also faced with a choice, deciding to be an elf. His twin brother, Elros, chose to be human, becoming the first King of Númenor. Directly from his line came Elendil and Isildur, and then much later Aragorn.
    Side note: The vial of starlight that Galadriel gave to Frodo is captured light from the star of Earendil (very long story told in The Silmarillion) who was a half-elf and the father of Elrond and Elros.
    Galadriel is by far the most powerful elf in Middle-earth, and she is wholly good and wise. She was born in Valinor in a time before the sun and moon were created, so is easily 9000 years old, probably much more. She is the keeper of Nenya, one of the three elven rings. It doesn’t come into the movies, but the other two rings are kept by Elrond and Gandalf, who was given his by Cirdan, Lord of the Grey Havens. The daughter of Lady Galadriel and Lord Celeborn married Elrond, so Arwen is her granddaughter.
    Legolas is an Elven prince, the son of an Elven king from another realm which does not play into this story but does in The Hobbit. He has known Gandalf and Aragorn for a very long time. Elves and Dwarves have thousands of years of bad blood between the races, hence Gimli and Legolas not liking each other in the beginning.
    I’ll end with the Hobbits. They live normally as long as humans, perhaps a bit more, so Bilbo (who comes from a line of long-lived Hobbits) is old by Hobbit standards but not beyond possibility. What makes him different is that he has barely aged. Bilbo is Frodo's uncle, taken in and named Bilbo's heir when Frodo's parents died. Samwise Gamgee is Frodo and Bilbo’s gardener, so technically he works for the wealthy, upperclass Bagginses, hence the occasional “Mr. Frodo.” There is a slight class structure, as was common in England during Tolkien’s life. Merry (Meriadoc Brandybuck) and Pippin (Peregrin Took) are distantly related to Frodo. Frodo is 50 when he leaves the Shire, Samwise is 38, Merry 36, and Pippin is 26 so still in his “tweens” (Hobbits come of age at 33) which is why he tends to be the most foolish. Give him time!
    Facts to keep in mind:
    1) The Ring has a will of its own and wants to return to the hand of Sauron, who is the only one who can truly control the power. Also, the Ring exerts a powerful evil influence on all who are close to it and evil is drawn to it.
    2) Middle-earth is big! The quest lasts just over a year, a vast amount of ground is covered, and the now-splintered fellowship meet a lot of new “people” along the way.
    Great reaction! You will LOVE this wonderful ride. The next two movies get better and better. As others will surely note in the comments, I strongly recommend the extended versions. And speaking as a Tolkien fan for close to 50 years, what Peter Jackson et al did with these 3 movies is a true masterpiece in every conceivable way. While there was much left out due to time (believe it or not), and obviously changes in pacing, story elements, and so on must be made when adapting to cinema, the movie barely strays from the novel by Tolkien.

      Well, Galadriel is not "wholly good and wise": in her younger years she was proud and ambitious, she followed the rebellion of Feanor against the Valar because she wanted to be free from the Valar's tutelage and to establish a realm of her own in Middle-Earth. She also despised Feanor for his greed and then she hated him because of the slaying of her relatives of Telerin race made by Feanor and his followers. Then, when the Elves were given the chance to return to Valinor, she refused in her pride, not willing to renounce to her power in Middle Earth. That's why she can be tempted by the Ring: the Ring can only appeal to the desires of people and use them as a leverage; the ones who don't seek power over things (i.e. almost no one, in the movies, since they cut out Tom Bombadil) can be immune to its call, or at least they can resist far more longer.

    Thank you for the video I really enjoyed it! One small editing suggestion I have is to let the characters finish their sentence before cutting to a new scene. One example is when you were wondering what the ring might say in elvish, and when that scene arrived where Gandalf recited what it says, he was abruptly cut off. Not sure if it was cut for time restraints, but that would've been a great thing to keep in, so we as an audience get closure as to your thoughts on the scene. Also it's just a bit jarring from one scene to another when someone hasn't finished what they were saying lol. I hope this doesn't come across as complaining, just throwing out suggestions is all, ty again for the reaction, I look forward to more videos!

    “I shall NOT be Dark. (All evil) will despair” The elves (Galadriel especially is one of the few remaining that existed before the sun & moon. They pre-existed day and night.) How utterly, completely terrifying do you think it would be for your whole world to irrevocably change in a matter of an hour? She is talking about the immediate, majestic sublimity of reality that one experiences in it's totality for the very first time. How on earth could that not be so terrifying as to threaten one's sanity?
    Galadriel with the ring would be exactly as beautiful and horrifying. I personally would not know whether to weep bitterly and perfectly, or claw my eyes out through the sheer, unutterable terror of her being in such a circumstance.
    But know this: she was showing Frodo what would happen if someone else got the ring. She wasn’t tempted at all. Gandalf tells. Galadriel shows. See the difference now. Two sides of the same coin. Both were needed.

    “Beautiful & Terrible as the dawn” Galadriel was quite correct to call the morning and night both “beautiful and terrible…”. In truth the physical and metaphysical natures of morning and night were both by turns beautiful and terrible.
    First the morning. Physically the morning is the result of the golden fruit of Laurëlin, transformed into a vessel by Aulë’s craftsmen, hallowed by Varda and piloted by the fiery Maiarin spirit Arien. The sun was so terrifyingly powerful that its radiance instilled fear even into Melkor’s heart and defied the assault of his minions.
    Physically the sun is a beautiful golden orb yet it is simultaneously terrifying in its intensity and cannot be observed directly for more than an instant without pain. Metaphysically the morning is beautiful because it diminishes the evil power of those creatures who haunt the night, gives strength to the righteous and because it illuminates the terrene loveliness of Valinor and Middle-earth. Metaphysically the morning is terrible because it obscures the light of the stars and sheds light on the ugly reality of Arda Marred, whose very substance is corrupted by the power of Melkor.
    Last the night. The night is the Void surrounding the globe of Arda, which existed even before the creation of the Ainur at the beginning of time itself. Physically the beauty of the night lies in the fact . Physically the terror of the night is that it conceals the beauty of Arda and limits the senses of the elves and gives strength to the creatures of evil such as orcs, trolls and the Ringwraiths. Metaphysically the night is beautiful because it is during the hours of darkness that the stars of Varda, the most beloved creations for the elves, shine most brightly. Metaphysically the terror of the night for elves, who are irretrievably bound to the world of Arda, is that the Void represents the interstellar coldness which is the prison of Morgoth.
    Terrible in its more original archaric form didn’t always mean “bad”

    Why didn't one of Gandalf's eagles just drop the ring into the fire at Mount Doom?
    This question is older than either of us. There are several reasons why not.
    1. This is a mission of secrecy. If a giant eagle flew into Mordor's borders, Sauron would immediately know something is up. He does have the resources to stop any eagle as you will later learn.
    2. The eagles are friends of Gandalf but are not beholden to him. He can't just give them orders. They sometimes do him favors when they can see he is in trouble and he does the same for them, but if he insisted that one or more of their number undertake such a dangerous mission, this would be intruding on their friendship. He would never ask this of them.
    3. If an eagle took possession of the ring, it would likely get corrupted. Almost no one can resist the power of the ring. Hobbits are more resistant than most. It is largely because they are unambitious -- desiring only a simple life. There is very little that the ring can use as a means to tempt them.

    Thank you for your reaction. It's so nice to see new people joining this big family that are the Tolkien fans.
    Btw, you mentioned someone calling you a Hobbit back in the day. From a fellow Hobbit girl, that's a badge of honor, my friend. You will understand why once you are finished watching the movies.

  • @toodlescae
    @toodlescae 5 місяців тому +3

    1. Hobbits are mostly isolated from the rest of Middle Earth. Therefore they're very naive about the larger world and have no idea of the danger they're facing.
    2. Pippin is basically still a teenager in hobbit years. Hobbits aren't considered adults till they turn 33. Frodo is 50, Sam 38, Merry 36 but Pippin is only 28.
    Got interrupted watching it so came back and made another comment.
    Sam is played by Sean Astin. If you've ever seen Goonies (very young Sean), Rudy or the show Stranger Things that might be where you recognize him from.

    If these movies had come out 30 years earlier, I would have gone through the aggravation of being called a Hobbit also. However, neither I nor likely any of my high school classmates had read the books as the 1970s began. I learned about "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" when I was a freshman in college. I've read them all several times since, and I'm in the process of reading them again. As for "dinner" or "supper", growing up, dinner was the noon time meal and supper was the later meal. Since I was growing up on a farm, the noon meal was always a bit more hearty than just a "lunch".

      Also grew up on a farm and we generally called the noon meal lunch and the evening meal supper unless their were guests then it would be called dinner no matter which of the two they were over for.
      Going off on a tangent here.Some guys on you tube tried to eat like hobbits for a day but they didn't look at it from an agrarian point of view or how it would work and were making full breakfasts for 1st and 2nd breakfast.
      For me first breakfast would have been when you first got up early in the morning and the goodwife (traditional Victorian gender roles here) would have tea and and toast on, maybe some oatmeal. The gentleman farmer would then have gone to the barn to feed animals because once they realize you are up they make an unholy racket until they are fed with maybe a few other light chores like tending newborn animals born overnight.
      Meanwhile his wife would be putting together some bacon, or black sausage, and eggs with homefries and more tea or coffee. Then it's back out to the barn for more chores like shoveling shit and bedding the animals then back in for elevensies which I'm thinking something like more tea or coffee and a slice of coffee cake or a few cookies.
      Back out for more chores and back at 12:30-1:00 for lunch of soup and grilled cheese or clubhouse sandwich and an ale. Tea time with crumpets at 4:00, dinner at 6 ish (that's when we had our big meal potayto, potahto) and supper at 9 or 10 something like soup or maybe something sweet like cake.

    Knowing that Lord of the Rings came first…
    Gandalf = Dumbledore
    Ringwraiths = Death Eaters/Dementors
    The One Ring = Horcruxes
    Sauron = Voldemort
    Merry and Pippen = Fred and George
    Sam = Hermione and Ron
    Frodo = Harry
    And others, but those are some easy ones!

    Hobbits are pure creatures, very hard to corrupt. So whatever moron thought they were insulting you actually gave you a big compliment. My stepdad was a Marine in World War ll. He enlisted because his pals told him he was way too short (5’3” tall) and the Marines would never take him. He said any self consciousness he had about his height vanished in the jungles of the Pacific. He was faster than all his fellow Marines, could hide in smaller shell holes or behind rocks and didn’t need as much food. Also, the X-man Wolverine in the comics was 5’3” tall. So that’s pretty badass.

    I'm a huge LotR fan. Last April my husband and I flew to New Zealand to visit some of the filming locations used in the movies. The highlight of the trip was visiting Hobbiton. (located at 501 Buckland Road, Matamata 3472, New Zealand) For the original films the Hobbit holes were removed after filming. When they began filming the Hobbit movies in 2012, they used sustainable materials to rebuild the Shire. Since then it has become a well known destination for fans. You can take a tour of Hobbiton and drink beer or eat a meal at The Green Dragon. I hope to go back again someday!

    I think the jumpscare of bilbo becoming this monster like creature when he asked to see the ring one more time goes a bit 'deeper' than what it appears on the surface.
    If I recall correctly, in the book, it's how Bilbo appears in that moment from Frodo's POV, like a monster that wants to steal the ring. And then he flinches back and Bilbo sees this and realises Frodo is now burdened with this curse. Like some trauma or ptsd or addiction or such.

    • @Laurelin70
      @Laurelin70 5 місяців тому

      The book is pretty ambiguous about it. It's clear from the way Bilbo's asking Frodo to see the Ring that he still can't be free from its influence (as foreshadowed by Gandalf when he talked with Frodo), and the little creature with a greedy look that Frodo sees when Bilbo asks him to see the Ring could be both a figment of his imagination and a real transformation of Bilbo, but in a way that doesn't matter, because both him and Bilbo are suffering the influence of the Ring, and that could be his imagination, but it's clearly Bilbo's addiction that pushes him to ask for the Ring.

    Regarding the hobbits' weed:
    Tolkien's vision of it was clearly pipeweed, so normal tobacco. Jackson interpreted it like marihuana. Given the nature of the hobbits and the modern perception of it, I think it's a fitting choice for an adaption, although it is not completely true to the books.

    The first thing that Boromir says to Aragorn is “they took the little ones” and he tried to take the ring. He immediately confessed his wrongdoings because he felt as if he lost his nobility. He wanted to die a hero and he did. If it wasn’t for his sacrifice Aragorn wouldn’t have been motivated to return to Gondor. Gandulf is basically a wizard-angel sent by the Gods (Valar) to save and help the dominion of men. The gods can no longer come to Middle-Earth due to collateral damage in the first age.
