  • One of Edinburgh's famous traditional music bars opens its doors late every evening to a crowd of musicians and pint guzzling punters. The film's title stems from the general fact that in the Oak you never know what happens next.
Enjoy this little film and your next drink there.
    Who made this film:
    Vroni Holzmann (producer, director, editor)
    Mikael Kanerva (camera)
    Erin Maguire (sound)
Lots of thanks to everyone who participated in this film.
RIP Paddy and Martin and Neil and Ewen. Miss you.

went there for the first time on Friday night, it was packed! great atmosphere, some of the punters were a little disrespectful of the musicians though, talking loudly over them so the bar staff had to shout out "this is a music pub, if you want to chat loudly to each other you can fuck off". still some continued...

Really sad to hear about Martin and Paddy. About roughly the same time as this video was made I was drinking downstairs one night when a gang of wee neds and their mad girlfriends were asked to leave and took exception. There was a stack of glasses on the bar and they started using them as ammunition. Danny was pinned behind the bar, pint tumblers whistling past his head, so me and Paddy stepped in and managed to get the fuckers up the staircase to the main door. They weren't for leaving, though, and kept trying to charge back down into the snug. I think one of the lassies wanted to kill Dorothy. So there's me and Paddy at the bottom of the staircase, holding the little bastards at bay and defending ourselves (and Dorothy) as best we could. The Oak's version of the three hundred Spartans. At one point one of the lassies got a hold of Paddy's beard and came away with a handful of it. I remember thinking 'Man, that has got to hurt', but the big man never faltered. After a lot of to-ing and fro-ing we got them out of the pub. Dorothy was well pleased. And so was Sandra when she heard about it. Me and big Paddy. Knights in shining armour. Like I say, all of this happened a long time ago; but I've thought about it often over the years and it always makes me smile. Mr Bort was a scholar and a gentleman. Quite literally. He'll be missed by all of us who love the Royal Oak and all she stands for. Long may she sail.
