yeah of course they lack crown's cleanliness but it's crown. crown has by far the best and cleanest brass ever but i adore scv because of their classic, pure style. they really have a great and unique sound and its always super fantastic.
And SCV has more titles so that's something to consider. They have the total package including a drum line that wins the Sanford every other year. Crown has never won drums or even come close.
Balance may account for the "hollow" sound you're referring to. There's a heavy trumpet presence and a little of a tuba and mellophone presence, and much less baritone presence than you'd hear from the two corps you mentioned. Nothing wrong with that, just a different style of teaching brass if anything :)
The recording of the sound is horrible - there is mass distortion and clipping. And yes, I have headphones... not garbage laptop speakers. This appears to have been recorded on a phone. I'm not sure how you can say too much of anything about how they may have really sounded.
Difficulty for the sake of difficulty isn't necessary when designing a corps show, both designers and judges know that. What matters is how the marriage of music and visual portray the show itself. And no I'm not sticking up for phantom because I'm an alumni, I actually marched SCV a few years back. The day that a show places higher solely based on difficulty is the day a show has been wrongly judged. The guys in green are the best in the business.
I might just want to be hearing it, but I think I here a 9th in the mellos? It's almost even better that it doesn't sound dominant and appears only just as a color.

SCV does difficult work too, and they achieve it, but shows are a balance of demand and art. 150 kids on unicycles balancing plates would be the hardest thing on the field, but does that give value to a group?
I have to admit, I miss the tone and touch they used to play with. This sounds alot like.. well.. other brass lines. Don't think anyone will touch Crown in brass this year.
oh and after seeing standing o's for Regiment a few years in a row....after every show...... from the field, I think priority one of entertaining and moving an audience is working out. So go march your high school band. When you get half the guts to do the summer routine, march a corps and you let me know how hard it was, and how easy it is to run your mouth on youtube comments.

I'm willing to concede that. but what they do is not as difficult and, since the visual caption is achievement AND content, the content score should be lower. and it's easier to sound good when you're not working as hard visually. Look at denver. When the corps were all playing at a standstill, vanguard definitely won the crowd.

Mellophones are WAYY to loud. I can barely hear the melody of the warmup. (played by the trumpets if you couldnt hear). The sound decent but they really need to work on dynamics and phrasing cause it just sounds like their blasting.

Look at BD '12, the reason they won everything is because of how well the entire show meshes together. Unfortunately for Crown they tried too hard to design a show that pushed their members and the overall design wound up falling short. These things aren't really obvious to most of us because all we know is what show makes us individually entertained.
2. I'm saying that difficulty is not taken into account as much as it should be, or the judges do a terrible job of judging it. I think this is completely obvious when the judges give Phantom the same visual repertoire score that the vanguard got. It's obvious what they did was much less challenging or demanding. Yes, they were cleaner, and deserve credit for that. But corps that do very difficult things should be rewarded for that even if it's not as clean- like Vanguard or the Cadets.
It's also really cute that people think phantom is actually better than SCV. They sound slightly better but move half as much. it's actually really impressive that they get scores so high while being so terrible.
they march easy high school drill. I can send you videos of my high school band marching that level drill. and i'm not from a BOA band either, i'm from the northwest where good bands don't even exist.
1. lets not bring BD into this, because I don't even think BD is a drum corps anymore. They're basically Blast! on a football field. Which is cool when I want to watch Blast! but not when I want to watch drum corps.

It sounds nice, no doubt. But it lacks the pure tone quality of corps like Carolina Crown or Phantom Regiment. I believe intonation may be a key??
