  • In this video Doo and I as we complete the PVC Bow and test it out. This is part 2 of a 2 part video.
    Many thanks to Backyard Bowyer whom I learned these techniques from. You really need to check out his channel for some fascinating videos.

    Haha, that's the reason I posted that. My first PVC bow was made by cutting it using the method you did. After about two weeks, it snapped, causing the string to slice open a small section of my arm. I wasn't trying to be rude with my comment. I was simply posting it as a precaution.

    Great tutorial. I would love to see the bow in action with some store bought arrows.

    Great vid on pvc bows, we used to make those back in the day... The thing with pvc it will start to com-form to the bow and go from say 65 to 25 pounds after a period of time, short period if left strung up. But reheating it can fix it back to 65 pounds etc.

    We have actually thought about it.. maybe a future video when we have a bt of extra time! Thanks for the support

    I've only ever made two. The first one, I cut the same as in the video. It broke. The second one I used the V method. I measured the middle of the flattened PVC at the top. Then I measured from the middle down 8 inches. Once I did that, I just used a ruler as a straight edge to line up the corners with the 8 inch mark, traced it, and cut it with a hack saw. It was actually pretty simple.

    As a guy who likes archery I must say I am very impressed. Have you ever thought about making a crossbow too just for the fun of it?

    Hey, thanks for the quick response. Was actually asking about the method described by ja2595 where one would cut a V into the tips and join them to make tapered ends.

    these bows are awesome and fun to make i actualy made one after watching back yard bowyer too. put a little deflex in my limbs and some reflex in my tips just cause i like the shape better, and got some synthetic twine and made a flemish twist bow string for it as well. now that ive seen your vids on making arows i can try my hand at some knaping and see if i cant get some arrows put together for it :) nice job on the bow by the way like your knock design better that mine i think.

    Backyard Bowyer actually made a takedown on his channel. It's 3 piece PVC where the two outers fit into the center. Pretty nice bow in my opinion

    Good Work. I would have never guessed that bow would be 65 lbs at 28 inches.

    You only need a PVC pipe (3/4" or 1" depending on the weight you want your bow) and a hacksaw (or some other kind of saw) to cut it. Maybe a marker and tape to make measurements, a file or sandpaper to smooth it. There's nothing else you need to construct this.

    if your worried about stress cracks drill a small hole at the end of the cut before cutting, it spreads the stress in a circle instead of one point, we use this to aluminum to stop a crack from spreading, Just an idea? Nice job

    David & Doo, great videos (Parts 1 & 2)! You did indeed give credit to the other guy where you learned how to make a bow. Thanks for sharing all of your expertise and skill.
    Just a question though, why not notch each end in the opposite direction so the string doesn't slip? Or is there a reason?
    Thanks again, you rock!

    I like this project, and have watched both videos, but my brain needs a list-type gathering of all the materials and requirements for the markings and such. Could you put that in the description of the video? I will try this when I get the money to fool around with (looks to be around 5 dollar cost since I already have cord lying around).

    Not sure what you mean by the "V" bro. You mean the notches for the cordage? Mine aren't perfect.. and they don't need to be. Just close enough :) Careful measuring and filing will help

  • @Shannon_Lacey
    @Shannon_Lacey 11 років тому

    @Jay Thomson: Although the legal hunting draw pull is 40 lbs. in the state of Ohio where I'm from for instance, I've heard of accounts of Native Americans successfully hunting buffalo with primitive cordage bows with draw pulls of 35 lbs. For an ethical shot, accuracy is most important. If one can't shoot accurately with a 60 lbs. bow, then perhaps lesser draw pull is better. But if you can shoot accurately with a heavier pull, then all the better. But 65 lbs. should kill anything in N. America.

    How about a pocket rocket version that might draw 45-50 pounds. If you come up with that, I would like to see the video.
    I just discovered your channel. Keep up the good work.

    You could be right.. But we have made 3 of these.. all similarly.. And we haven't had any problem. Maybe someone can let us know if they make one like this if it fails.

    I totally thought Doo busted out a jigsaw to cut that PVC. Before I seen it was a hacksaw, I was all about watching the upcoming video; "How to make Bushcraft Power Tools".

  • @Shannon_Lacey
    @Shannon_Lacey 11 років тому

    Dave, I've been thinkin' about this outstanding bow all week, and I've got an idea that I wanted to run by you. The idea is to take your bow one step further, and to make a two piece, fit together take down bow, same design as the one you made, except for two 2.75' halves to fit inside one another in the middle portion, with the same total together overall length of 5'. What do you think?

  • @ja2595
    @ja2595 11 років тому

    To anyone watching: cutting the ends of the bow in the fashion they did will corrupt the integrity of the PVC. This can cause it to break at the notches. Instead of cutting from the middle out, cut from the two corners into the middle. Cut about an 8 inch V using a hack saw. Heat the ends, and press them together. You can file in notches. Just avoid cutting through the wall of the PVC.

    This is 1" .. makes about a 65 pound bow
    3/4" makes about 35/40 pound bow
    1 1/4" makes about 100 pound bow

  • @BushcraftOnFire

    Bows don't kill a deer... Arrows do. Can this bow shoot an arrow hard enough to kill a deer? Why sure it can. 65 pounds is a pretty strong bow.

    arrows are pretty useless without a bow...just like a bullet is pretty useless with a gun. and since you want to go there with it the arrows dont kill anything the people shooting them do.
