Sony DCR-PC7 small early digital miniDV camcorder, 1996: description, hands-on, test shots

- I realised there are no video resources online of this great camera… so I decided to create one.
The Sony DCR-PC7 was the smallest camcorder ever made when it was launched in 1996. It was also one of the first digital camcorders, using miniDV tape.
The PC7 features a 10 x zoom lens (38-380 mm equiv., f/1.8-2.6), one 1/3"" CCD chip, a 2 1/2"" LCD, colour view finder, 3 lux low light sensitivity, SuperSteadyShot image stabilisation and a die-cast magnesium body weighing 620 g including 730 mAh battery and tape.
A professional DVCAM version, called DSR-PD1, was offered from 1997 to 1999.
The PC7 saw many successors until the end of the miniDV era around 2005.
Once offered for 3 100 $, it now sells on ebay for 20 $ in good condition.
Unbelievable that the film The Celebration (1998) was shot on this camera.
The batteries are almost impossible to find now. I run my PC7 using a 2 cell 800mah lipo battery from a model plane. Works great.
Note: When you put this camera in 16:9 Widescreen mode, the only thing it does is make the top and bottom of the picture black. It doesn't switch it to a higher resolution and doesn't change the video compression in any way. So it's better to record in 4:3 full screen mode.

Hi did the camera come with functioning batteries? I just bought one, but batteries are dead, any suggestions, where to find?
Yes it did, and at the time you could still buy new replacements on ebay. Now they have indeed disappeared :(. Really sad. This type of battery was only used in this and the PC10.
