Laptop manufacturers should be ashamed of themselves for peddling thick bezel, non-touch, overpriced GARBAGE like the XPS 13. I've got the Xiaomi Mi Laptop. i5 8th gen, 8 GB Ram, 256 GB SSD, MX150 graphics and a fingerprint sensor with a backlit keyboard. First time ordering anything off Ali Express but TopCashback gave me £35 back on top. I paid around £650 and I couldn't find anything like this in the UK. It's incredibly fast and runs what I need. I didn't need high graphics as it's just for documents, streaming videos and a surfing the web. They make amazing stuff - No wonder their phones are taking over.
My 2018 Matebook X Pro is still going strong and is an amazing laptop. Currently have it running Linux Mint and it's a dream. But when I was on Windows, undervolting the CPU really helped with the thermals. And you can fix the rattle by pushing the metal tabs under the touchpad back up. Dunno why Huawei decided to skip that in manufacturing. The price bump sucks. Last year, the MXP for $1500 was insane.
How is the Linux compatibility? I was thinking of getting a new laptop for my birthday intending to run Linux (probably Kubuntu), and the Matebook is an alluring laptop. Did everything more-or-less work as soon as you installed Linux, or were there some hardware issues?
Do you know Lenovo IdeaPad 730s? I7 + 16G +512G, within 2.4lbs, and it has no apple look design. Only cost $820. Although no 2K 3x2 display, but Huawei logo is too ugly and using a Huawei device in US is kinda werid to me.
2 years later and I bought the MXP 2019 just last week. The only difference is mine came with 8gb RAM instead of 16gb. I paid £699 off Amazon which is a bargain IMO! Im glad I got the older model. I wouldn't have been in the market for a laptop of this spec otherwise. Thank you Dave for the review!
I have never, ever . . . ever used a webcam. I'm 36 years old. So happy when they just get rid of them or just include one in the box that you clip on when needed ( which is never ). I know someone has done that already and it is a good thing.
So what would you prefer. The crappy quality inbuilt webcam. Or a higher quality larger clip on webcam included in the box? I'm genuinely interested which option someone that relies on a webcam would choose.
any thermal issues u came across while putting it under load? is it getting pretty hot? pretty loud? im looking into buying this laptop and id love to hear some of the cons of it from a daily user
DawnDude I don’t frequently use it for any intense work much, so I’m not sure if it would be loud or hot for someone that occasionally edits or plays games. it gets pretty warm if I have a lot of tabs and documents open, but it’s not really bad compared to other laptops. I would strongly recommend it to any casual user though. Edit: my only complaint about this laptop is the battery life: it depletes quickly if being run on full brightness and load, but the fact that it charges insanely quickly in mere minutes overcomes it’s poor battery life
I picked up the 2018 model of the X Pro last week... the price jump to the 2019 model isn't worth it as it's almost the exact same device otherwise. The 2018 model is incredible value! I don't regret the purchase at all... thin, light, amazing display, battery life with my usage is 10 hours of development running VSCode, various build tools, music playing and screen on 50% brightness. No issues with the fan doing silly things but the bottom does get quite warm. My old laptop was a 6 year old gaming laptop which is best described as a brick. Incredibly powerful still... but a big, loud brick weighing in at almost 5kg. The X Pro weighs the same as the power brick for that beast... such a breath of fresh air :D
customer service experience was probably the best i had since im into tech. my problem was resolved 24 hours after my complaint. fast, friendly and professional. nothing to be afraid of. (im from germany, so us cs should be even better)
I'm having this same issue. For my budget and needs (and preference) the matebook x pro is perfect but I don't want to get it lest this boycott not end.
Well I think this clearly looks better than Stealth. Better speaker, battery life, quality control(because Razer is wooorse lol), screen, way better keyboard, thinner bezels.
Rio the MadHater yes it's ok to be suspicious. However you couldve clarified that you were assuming Dave's nationality by his look or just watch his content more and figure the truth out first. Otherwise it's just misleading
@Rio the MadHater Yo hatred connoisseur, take a chill pill. Canadians are the stalwarts and lead innovators of AI. Our beloved UA-cam works because of the innovation of a Canadian from University of Toronto. And keep your demi-racist and stereotypical views to yourself. This world can do better with one less motley fool. The hardware, build and software is clearly superior on this year's Matebook lineup. Dave did complain about the pricing but justified it as the brand being smug about their product. If you made a really good rocket to go to Mars tomorrow, why would you bother to sell it cheap? It's a business, not a charity. A person's lineage is merely a tag. A pretty useless tag as well. Do you know that humans have 60% common DNA with a yeast cell? So what, you are yeast now? Go and ferment now. Your points and your attitude depict what an imbecile you are. And about Canadians being coward, your comment shows how inept and sissy you yourself are. I would choose Canadians any day over the likes of you. Trudeau is a much better President than Trump. They don't need anyone. Besides, any country that goes to war is both coward and stupid. Not the other way around. P.S.- I am an Asian too. So you shove the humble pie up your trachea.

Its funny how last year when you did the review for the 2018 matebook pro, you weren't sure about the Huawei security and saying to reinstall Windows to make sure that you weren't being spied on. But now, when Huawei technology is being band for those same suspicion, you're giving it your "stamp of approval"
My company recently upgraded my 5 yr old Lenovo to the latest HP elitebook. after a month of usage, it constantly reminds me why HP the company sucks and leaves me wonder wtf was my company thinking paying for this piece of junk.
@@dodyalkarkhi8609 I said that about a month ago, no idea why I said that, but that's what most Chinese believe. Their CEO Said that in an interview, Lenovo is a global company, and after buying IBM in 2004, their office in the US become their most important one.I personally don't hate this idea but many Chinese are pissed off by this fact.
Dude, Apple have had airplay for years to transfer data. This is a nice innovation on the same idea but I wouldn’t say it is better than Airplay. You don’t need to touch your phone to the laptop like Dave did in the video. Also, chill with the apple hate.
@@makasete30 Good side on HuaweiShare: no need to wait for a few seconds and search for the device and may see other devices. Good side on AirDrop: no need to touch. Personally I prefer touching the phone.
Hanxuan Song SuperSaf did a demo on Huawei share and it took over a minute for the pictures to actually pop up. AirDrop is also supported by all iPhones.
The Matebook X has a "rattlepad", therefore I purchased a Lenovo Yoga S730, which had a problem with chassis, it was twisted, so the Laptop was not aligned with the surface.I personally will invest 400 bugs more and get the build quality I want... Haven't decided yet what the next laptop will be.... but it seems that a I7, with 16GB RAM and a good SSD can't be offered with the current price tag.
Great review. The chin cam is a deal breaker for me, and I'm a writer, so I need a really comfortable keyboard. I can see the appeal for someone who is switching from a Macbook to a Windows laptop.
About Huawei Connect, Apple had something similar called AirDrop which uses Bluetooth and has been there for a while. It was originally separate implementations (so iOS to iOS and Mac to Mac), but support between Mac and iOS were added in Yosemite along with Continuity features. But this only works with iPhones
Get rid of the spy shit please. So far China has almost no proof to said that they are spying or something. Most of them just US government saying. But facts and news like US coop (facebook and google) leaks and share info of customers are so farking real and has the god darn proof. So now who are the one spy the most.

@@folcane it handles photo editing like a breeze. Everything I do on it is lightning fast I can even edit 4k videos pretty decenrly. It honestly blows me away
@@dorogans the build quality is really really good. On par with a MacBook Pro. and the track pad is also really smooth and accurate. Some people complain that the track pad is a bit loose but i do not feel that.
When my dad told me about how Huawei’s making quality affordable (in China) hardware, I didn’t believe it. Now I think that when Apple’s hiring and then paying severance package to a Burberry officer making it’s ridiculous luxury play, Huawei has crazy company culture (with half of the staff being researchers constantly working day and night) and dedicated to make great quality affordable gears.
The scary thing about these devices is their value is almost unbeatable. For the same specs, there's nearly nothing within their price range before. Even though today the X Pro is no longer as competitive, it is still an excellent value for money. While I'm not advocating for Chinese products that don't currently have proper support structure outside of China nor supporting the way Huawei had been handling their business, I hope their success would become a good kick in the butt for Dell, HP and Apple when those 3 designs have been standing still for a few years after series of successful products.
Except Surface Laptop is something that Microsoft wants you to run Windows S on, which means it's more like a ChromeBook competitor, while MateBook Pro X seems to be more or less trying to compete with MacBook Pro.
i totally disagree, just sent back my new matebook x pro. Touch pad was rattling, and i even found a screw locked into the chassis right under the screen. This was actually breaking the opening mechanism + it felt really weak Don't get this laptop if you want something fair for the price u pay
Massive difference between accidental and intentional flaws. Plus the west doesn't care about your shit, they care about defense. China wants your ideas, your concepts, your patents, everything. If you work with valuable commercial data, you'd be very unwise to use companies like Huawei.
I am sorry, but, even though i dont use the webcam much, and i have a separate usb webcam, the webcam placement killed it for me. I wanted the bigger one and just stopped watching as soon as i saw that. The video was going great though, is just the laptop i dont like.
The one thing I'm concerned about is lifetime. How many years until this starts to slow down or the battery starts to degrade by a significant amount? Nobody knows the answer yet.
At 2:09 you state that the Matebook 13 has a 2560x1440 display. That would make it a 16:9 aspect ratio, but since this is a 3:2 it is actually 2160x1440.
FYI, new type of matebook x pro and matebook 14 will be launched in this month especially for matebook 14, it has way better IO design, as well as thunderbolt 3
The Chinese have access to all the OEM parts, access to all the design, assembly methods, much cheaper distribution, lower cost of R&D due to before factors etc... they have all the advantages when it comes to making these cheap and good electrical goods.

I paid around £650 and I couldn't find anything like this in the UK. It's incredibly fast and runs what I need. I didn't need high graphics as it's just for documents, streaming videos and a surfing the web.
They make amazing stuff - No wonder their phones are taking over.
Dave, will you make a comparison video between the Matebook 13 and the XPS13?
My friend bought an xps 13 last year and the keyboard is too mushy for my liking.
Stay away from xps.. pos. I have top of the line 4k i7 ..back in 2016. The hardware is total rubbish.
Without the performance, XPS is still a little bit better
xps is trash
XPS is great although more expensive and doesn't have a graphics card
Do youuse the laptop for any video editing? Or some 3d work?
Where did you get that DBZ wallpaper in matebook background?

-MKBHD, probably.
You're literally everywhere lol
As others have said I love this guy’s voice. So relaxing to listen to!
In fact, for 8 gb of the matebook 13, that depend the price of 799-899 dollars range in Chinese market, its quite nice though.
Do you know Lenovo IdeaPad 730s? I7 + 16G +512G, within 2.4lbs, and it has no apple look design. Only cost $820. Although no 2K 3x2 display, but Huawei logo is too ugly and using a Huawei device in US is kinda werid to me.

Oh man..... i was waiting for you to talk about this laptop for a long time...
You're the best dave👌
2 years later and I bought the MXP 2019 just last week. The only difference is mine came with 8gb RAM instead of 16gb. I paid £699 off Amazon which is a bargain IMO! Im glad I got the older model. I wouldn't have been in the market for a laptop of this spec otherwise. Thank you Dave for the review!
I have never, ever . . . ever used a webcam.
I'm 36 years old.
So happy when they just get rid of them or just include one in the box that you clip on when needed ( which is never ).
I know someone has done that already and it is a good thing.
36 year, never webcam. what are you hiidng?
So what would you prefer.
The crappy quality inbuilt webcam.
Or a higher quality larger clip on webcam included in the box?
I'm genuinely interested which option someone that relies on a webcam would choose.
Between Huawei laptop Matebook X Pro and Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro version. What do you think is better in question of a hakicntoush?
Hey Dave! I love your vids!
Typing this on a matebook 13 btw.. it's a great laptop!
any thermal issues u came across while putting it under load? is it getting pretty hot? pretty loud?
im looking into buying this laptop and id love to hear some of the cons of it from a daily user
Edit: my only complaint about this laptop is the battery life: it depletes quickly if being run on full brightness and load, but the fact that it charges insanely quickly in mere minutes overcomes it’s poor battery life
if dave says a laptop is great(which he has in this video), then it is certainly great.
Hey Dave can u do a comparison between MacBook pro and matebook x but the MacBook is one windows boot camp
what?
why would you do that, MacBook will lose for sure, use Mac OS on Mac, otherwise you have overheating, slowness and a bunch of other issues.
why would you use Mac just for Windows 😂
why this question has so many likes lol.
Would also like to see this.
In the midst of this trade war, do you still recommend getting this laptop? I really like it but I am wondering what if Microsoft also bans Huawei?
No don't get it.
Micosoft is banned, along with Google, Intel, Qualcomm and more. Marques Brownlee made a video about this
I'm having this same issue. For my budget and needs (and preference) the matebook x pro is perfect but I don't want to get it lest this boycott not end.

Wait. You criticized the Razer Stealth for its price, and you praise a more expensive device that looks worse and has similar performance ?
Rio the MadHater He's Canadian and stop being racist
@UC2tzDhi2sBr3py5NhSHDuhQ hahaha literally

Its funny how last year when you did the review for the 2018 matebook pro, you weren't sure about the Huawei security and saying to reinstall Windows to make sure that you weren't being spied on. @@dodyalkarkhi8609 I said that about a month ago, no idea why I said that, but that's what most Chinese believe. Huawei connect is an interesting feature. I'm pretty sure Apple will invent it in few years..
Dude, Apple have had airplay for years to transfer data. This is a nice innovation on the same idea but I wouldn’t say it is better than Airplay. You don’t need to touch your phone to the laptop like Dave did in the video.
Also, chill with the apple hate.
Welp the Apple hate is already out of control, but anyways, AirPlay and AirDrop are very nice to have, they just work, very secure and simple
@@makasete30 Good side on HuaweiShare: no need to wait for a few seconds and search for the device and may see other devices. Good side on AirDrop: no need to touch. Personally I prefer touching the phone.

That cellphone to laptop pic transfer thing is fucking awesome. Can't wait to try this out
iPhones and MacBooks have had airdrop for years. Don’t even need to touch the “NFC sticker”.
Don't get the NFC thing. AirDrop sounds more convenient, and is fast enough.
Mac Bok are also made in China
Truths
just bought this laptop, so stoked for it!!

I got around to buy the Huawei Matebook 13 with a mx250 for 420€ or just below 500$. I love these types of devices from less known brands. They end up being somewhat forgotten and become insanely affordable used down the line.
I own the Ryzen 5 2500U Matebook D 14" and it's just incredible for its price. 600$ or so and it has impressive battery life and performance, also i can use the Huawei Share feature with my Mate 10 and it makes some things way easier. Totally recommending their lineup.

The selling point is the 3:2 display and the all round features in a premium chassis. But it costs more than Surface Laptop.
Except Surface Laptop is something that Microsoft wants you to run Windows S on, which means it's more like a ChromeBook competitor, while MateBook Pro X seems to be more or less trying to compete with MacBook Pro.
It's only $1299 on the microsoft store with a student discount
i totally disagree, just sent back my new matebook x pro. Touch pad was rattling, and i even found a screw locked into the chassis right under the screen. This was actually breaking the opening mechanism + it felt really weak
