John Q was a great one too
personally Crimson Tide, Glory, and Courage Under Fire is him at his best, just fantastic performances where he holds his own with a perfect story behind it. Though there's a lot of films of his that are not as well-made but still enjoy them a lot.

He shares something with another actor, Anthony Hopkins. He has an emotional precision. the detail in his expressions can be measured in fractions of a second. That operating frequency is what I think establishes the dynamic and nuanced qualities.

Malcolm X, Training Day, American Gangster, Flight, Fences and Macbeth are a better lineup of performances than almost any actor has in their career. The fact that I could keep going to 20 is god level.

His performance in Flight isn't talked about enough. The nuance is insane.
Also, this video makes me realize that Denzel and Morgan haven't been in a movie together in their older life and that seems criminal lol... Actually, Morgan couldve played one of those execs in Flight (that said, the men that did play the execs did great too).
I thought an Oscar for that performance would've been fitting.

I was visiting my great Aunt in New York City years ago. She took me to a small production of the play "A Raisin in the Sun". The first actors come on stage one by one. And then another guy pops on stage who looks familiar. Turns out it was Denzel Washington. The crowd went ballistic. Still one of the best memories today.
That was truly a blessing seeing the legend himself live in action
People may not consider him in the same category but professionally speaking I feel the same way about Samuel L. Jackson. He's just artistically reliable in every role he plays I buy it.

I think because Jackson accepts some silly roles, like Snakes on a Plane for example. Denzel is notorious for being very careful about the roles he is willing to accept.
I don't even know what to say about Denzel anymore. From "Malcolm X" to "The Preacher's Wife" to "Training Day". From my childhood to my adulthood just a breathtakingly skilled actor.
Nominated and lost for playing Stephen Biko in “Cry Freedom,” Malcolm-X in “Malcolm-X,” and Ruben ‘Hurricane’ Carter in “The Hurricane.” These are real people with incredible stories that deserve to have Denzel portray them. Should have won some, if not most of these.
Malcolm X for sure. Hurricane was another phenomenal performance. I think between that and Flight, he should've arguably had another.
Malcolm X should have been his first Oscar. It’s criminal that it didn’t go to him. I believe if that was made this year and all other details exactly the same, he would have won.

I doubt it. Politics are huge and black liberation is a non-starter for real award consideration. The only black historical figures that will generally garner Oscar's are if you're portraying someone considered a villain and really driving home the villain aspect like Forest Whitaker in Last King of Scottland or something else.

That's crazy because I can never divorce him from his roles. Definitely has talent and charisma. 100% one of the greatest actors ever. But I've never seen him become something so completely different.
I wouldn't call him a chameleon type actor. He's like a Deniro or DiCaprio. Definitely more versatile than Deniro when it comes to his emotional modulating on his face. Those micro-expressions he can do are phenomenal. I compared him to DiCaprio because if you look at both of their careers, they have always picked the best movies suited to their particular skillset. Their stars shine so bright, it can be hard to divorce their performances from their fame
Acting technique wise I think he beats both of those actors but I chose those specifically becauas those are two other acting careers where they have incredible movies almost the whole time but it's hard for them to shake off "the idea of them" people have created in the collective consciousness.

It's quite remarkable that every time I've seen a Denzel film, I don't see Denzel, I see the character. The only other two major actors (in my book) who can do that are Daniel Day Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio.
I'm almost always the exact opposite. I don't think he has much range. Or at least doesn't choose roles that deviate much.

1)Book Of Eli 2)American Gangster 3)Roman J Israel, Esq. It took me 30 minutes to pick these three. He's got like 60 movies. It was tougher than I thought it would be. There is literally not even one I don't like. Macbeth & Much Ado are both flawless. John Q made me tear up as a grown ass man. I'm a musician so I watch Mo Betta once a year. Malcolm X & Glory are mandatory films for all Americans. Denzel is the Standard. He really is the very best actor in the world. He said it & it came true.

@@DreamyTee123 It's interesting seeing him play the underdog. Most of his roles he's the alpha. But Roman is a little bit of a loser. Not highly respected. Kind of an oddball type of dude. Definitely his weirdest character out of all the movies.
Denzel is the best leading man talent since Paul Newman. Movie star good looks, range and on screen charisma.
His range is immaculate but his faith and dedication to his family on top of his amazing looks makes him even better actor!
The family aspect is particularly commendable, imo, in a place like Hollywood. A lot of temptation and potential pitfalls.

My first memory of him is probably from Philadelphia and The Pelican Brief, he quickly became a reliable actor, always sign that there was gonna be at least a good performance in this movie.
Mine would probably be, in no particular order, The Manchurian Candidate, Malcolm X and Roman J. Israel, Esq. The Taking of Pelham 123 is also up there. Thanks for a great piece!

It's funny also because Denzel has so many films in his repertoire that are far from famous or well-remembered or iconic, but all of them really quite entertaining, decently interesting, good solid thrillers/action, nothing that ever gets too lazy/stupid like some big stars can delve into sometimes, even the mediocre ones are at least fun or weird. For me personally, he's the most consistent actor, that every film I see from him he never lets down, whether he's a brilliant actor or no, he's consistently entertaining and consistently engaged.
I don't know why but the last three years I spent watching trying to watch almost every film he's been in from Philadelphia to The Little Things, although I've strangely avoided some of the more famous mainstream ones.
I watched Movies like Crimson Tide (brilliant), Courage Under Fire (very great), Fallen, The Siege, The Bone Collector, Training Day, John Q, Out of Time, Man on Fire, The Manchurian Candidate, Inside Man, Deja Vu, American Gangster, Unstoppable, Flight, Equalizer1-2, Magnificent Seven, Fences. (Also A Soldier's Story (1984), Glory (1990) & Ricochet (1991)). The strange thing is that none of these films are not interesting at least, and that's a hard feat for a big name, even the best stars make schlock. Some of these films there is so many interesting elements to discuss, like Out of Time is a fantastic old-fashioned 70s type hard-boiled thriller, The Siege is a blockbuster failure but super interesting in its political context, Deja Vu does time-travel thriller in a unique way, Unstoppable is way underrated on the level of Runaway Train but with superb action, Flight has one of his best performances by far, The Manchurian Candidate is a fascinating remake that isn't as good as the original but still worth discussing. Fallen is such a fascinating occult thriller that also fails to land well. Glory and A Soldier's Story are very underrated as historical films, especially the latter which combines detective-mystery film with exploring race relations in a military base in the South in WW2, very unique period-piece.
I look in Denzels eyes and I'm there, in the moment.
The sound could be muted, but I'm there in the moment.
Never would have called the shot of him playing MacBeth, much less directed by Joel Coen, but he fucking kills it. Magnetic screen presence in everything he does.
You see Denzel's power as an actor when he is in the same scene with other great actors. I saw Much Ado About Nothing when Kenneth Branagh was the darling of snooty cinephiles. You see that movie and witness Denzel nailing all the notes perfectly while the Shakespearean actors seem to ham. Man, his portrayal of his character was so true, so tight. It was precision seemingly without any appearance of effort. This would be my favorite Denzel movie.
A close second would be Devil in a Blue Dress. No, make it a tie for first. That was the first time I saw Don Cheadle in a movie. He and Denzel were absolutely fantastic together.

I had only watched training day a few years ago and my god, what a gem of a movie. I'm glad I waited to watch it until I was older though because it allowed me to appreciate all the nuances

Just found your channel today, criminally underrated. I was not expecting this level of editing, information, and most of all passion. You can feel it watching the video just how much passion you have for making these videos. Never stop jack, I hope you reach a million subs soon.
I love him in Inside Man too. I love that movie. It's far more than it seems, but even taken literally, it's still a stylish heist thriller that any 'go to' Hollywood director for hire would be proud of. Denzel is almost, but not quiet, playing a parody of the Blaxploitation movie protagonists of the 70s and he carries it off pitch perfect. Stylish, entertaining and always giving the air that his character is far smarter than everyone around him.

I loved MacBeth. To see Denzel deliver that dialogue with his trademark style (especially as he becomes more unhinged) is a thing to behold.
It’s insane to me that I’ve seen his movies, I’ve remembered his characters and yet I only found out his name now. Usually that’d mean I just forgot that they were in the movie but no. Legit- he melts into his roles. So much so that when you were listing off the characters my brain didn’t recognize them as the same person. Maybe I’m tired or something but I think that’s just insane to me.
That might be a personal thing for you. It's very uncommon to not know the man's name lol. He's definitely skilled and he plays certain types very well but I wouldn't necessarily categorize him as one of those actors that melts into a role and that's nothing against his insane career. Easily one of the greatest actora EVER. but his type is more in the vein of those actors that have incredible star power and have picked the right roles for their talents consistently.
A chameleon would be someone like Gary Oldman. The man forgot his own accent lmao. That's gotta be really troubling.

That’s why I love his movie Fences. It’s filled with so much dialogue but Denzel’s voice draws me in and gets me so focused I couldn’t look away and the story is his character talked about where incredible and explains so much of his character and again just how incredible of an actor he is. That was the first Denzel movie I’ve seen and I’m down to see all his movies, the guy is a master at this.

I re-watched training day recently, there's parts where alonzo is telling jake how jake needs to play the game and change things from the inside, and i couldn't decide if alonzo really believes that and if he's being earnest, but me wondering that is a testament to denzel

Since I watched remember the titans as a kid, then later Deja Vu and The Great debaters, I knew Denzel was one of a kind and my favorite actor. You would be hard pressed to change my mind, then or now.
What most impresses me now though, is his professionalism and apparent dependability. You can see it in his gratitude, hood family values , his interviews; This man knows how to live awell lived life.
For me what speaks to a person's skill on screen, personally, i don't think about how characters. He isnt a character being played in the film, he belongs there. Suspension of disbelief is never compromised.

Paul Thomas Anderson was asked in an interview during Licorice Pizzas release if he could work with one actor who would it be and he said Denzel. Make it happen please!

I'd say he is Definetely so charismatic in every role he can't help but leave you feel engaged and a very relatable character but he has his staples in acting his catchphrases etc; but arguably Daniel day Lewis leaves so little to the imagination he just embodies the role to the point you don't even think of the performance you only try to u understand who you are watching on screen ( not who DDL is trying to portray ) you are getting to know this person from scratch he is a physical true human being while you watch. I may not have articulated as much as I'd like and densely is one of my favourites but I know what I'm saying resonates with people.
For me it's everything he is. Not just the actor but the man. Man, he has such a commanding presence. I always think if he weren't an actor, he'd be president of the Americas or something. His on screen and off screen presence immediately commands attention. He can be intimidating and vulnerable at the same time. I can't think of a movie in which I wasn't completely absorbed in his performance. He's the kind of actor who appeals to all generations.Denzel, Morgan, Lewis and Sir. Over the past two weeks a plethora of Denzel's greatest characters have graced my laptop via the streaming platform HBO max.
Training Day, Book of Eli, American Gangster, Man on Fire, all movies that I went "hey, Denzel's in that one, let's check it out" and then imediately was embraced by multiple frighting, intimidating, and shattered human beings each with their own burdens, and each with an equal ability to command my attention.
When he speaks, it's not just how he says it, or what he's saying.. it is that belief in WHO is saying it, that they are real, that they are flesh and blood. Every step in their story has me following close behind.
Facts. Fallen is by most metrics NOT a good film, but Denzel's role makes it enjoyable and fun. The movie will be good based on his presence alone.
When I think of male movie stars I immediately think of Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Idris Elba, Matt Damon, Will Smith, etc. But when I think of male actors I think Denzel, Anthony Hopkins, Robert De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis, Chadwick Boseman, Clint Eastwood, Sidney Poitier, etc.
The former are people who don't necessarily put up immaculate performance every thine they're on screen, but there's a likeability factor to their acting that draws people to the movie theatre. The latter are people you know have the sheer skill and talent to carry a film even with a middling script because they're such power entities that they transcend the performance. They're also very private in their lifes and treat acting as a blue collar job with their work ethic.
Omg yes I totally see what you mean now its almost as if a lightbulb went off in my head. For the former also throw in Matthew McConaghey, Jack Nicholson, George Clooney, and Tom Hanks too! The former that you refer to as the male movie star to me I agree with your analysis everything about them screams “Flashy” but in a good way very Hollywood the cheerleaders and mascots of Hollywood they are quite loveable, an actors actor if you will. They may not always have winning roles but they’re so damn charming and effervescent they captivate audiences everywhere.
And latter I also agree with your analysis! And might I also throw in Christian Bale, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Kevin Spacey (i know he’s ick and disgraced but he wouldve fit this category imo), Shia LaBouef (he may be controversial opinion but he proved himself as a force to be reckoned with in the world of acting and can hang with the best of them), and Joaquin Phoenix are the ones I also think of would fit into your male actors category. They are the reason why acting was created. They are the writers actual muses. They embody the authentic origins of acting they are artists they are storytellers they are transformers that sacrifice who they are and just give themselves completely over to their art. They are the ones where they dont need Hollywood, Hollywood needs them.
All of these actors will be cemented in history.
(ps There’s two actors however I find slightly difficult to place them cause they don’t quite fit in either category but yet they somehow do. They are on my mind cause they have a special place in hollywood too. Its Keanu Reeves and Jim Carrey)

Not many people could change the look in their eyes, the power it gave when eye balls weren't rolling, and Denzel definitely kill it.
I want those full 5 minutes of additional Malcolm X speech! The mind and the character of an individual to be able to improvise 5 more minutes of that kind of content and intellect from a great historical leader is one that should be greatly admired.

MAN ON FIRE just makes me cry my eyes out
As a black man who would be an actor, but for injustice, I admire these guys, Washington and Freeman. What's most appealing to me about them are their voices. And what I envy about all great actors is their height and physique, which cannot be taught. Tom Cruise, for instance, does not possess such gifts as most of the best actors nowadays.
He plays the same type of character well.
That part about him always being better than the films he's in is so true. My all-time fave performance from Denzel has to be Ben Marco from the Manchurian Candidate - even if you don't like the remake, he manages to imbue his character with so much fear and desperation it gets to you.

I dont know if he is method acting, but if he is, he has found a balance few have seen in all movies. Spirituality is content where God has him at and in acting and finds new levels of wisdom. His director bag is coming along with it. It's inspiring.
If you havent seen fences, it's a must watch. All the actors left me speechless.... and teary eyed.
well now i wish i watched more movies with him and came up with this conclusion on my own, ill have to watch those movies now through all y'alls lenses

He was fantastic in Mississippi Masala and Philedelphia too, some of my favorites.
He does tend to act the same in his macho action roles. Training Day was just the epitome of it and earned him the Oscar.

I think Denzel is in that same category as Tom Hanks...as the video highlights, you always know its him, but you always *believe* he's also the character he's playing. I think it's because he truly inhabits the character that he's portraying.

I recently re-watched Fallen, which is sort of okay, it has some visual flair, it has a cool premise, a nice twist, but it doesn't really come together as a whole. But you watch, and keep watching, because of HIM. He combines cockiness with uncertainty and makes it believable.

Denzel Washington is incredible. I think I was starting to take him for granted before this video. He truly is the most incredible actor.
