Starting out again on the hobby after 50 years and catching up with all your old videos as I'm learning so much. In awe at your skills with scenery and especially with weathering! It's making me realise what a long time it's going to take me to learn how to do the sort of weathering in this video , in fact I probably never will - you make it look easy!

It think It is the kind of thing anyone can appreciate. I have a layout where I get similar comments...people even comment they just like the sound of the trains, clicking over the rail joins! lol. Dave

I haven't done any modelling since my early teens and some *horrendous* airfix models. I think it's the astonishing workmanship that's displayed that keeps me coming back.

    • @frozenmarauder2747

I think even if you aren’t into trains or modelling, the fact it just takes you into a totally different world is where it’s at. There is definitely an aspect of escapism attached to the videos, helped greatly by Richards’s highly infectious love of not only trains, but the engineering, but also the nuts & bolts of it all, which most modellers either just neglect, or don’t bother with at all? Not to mention his affection with all things 1980’s : )
However, it is this attention to detail, which elevates his videos from good, to EPIC! Not only does whatever he undertakes, become it’s very own piece of art, but I have also never seen such patience and dedication. No challenge is too big and let’s just say his code 75 sleeper spacing videos, made my actually see just how much that would entail? I lasted 30 minutes and managed about a quarter of one full length of Peco flexi track! This is about 0.000000001 of what Richard has already done... However, I will persevere as now I’ve seen it, there really is no way to un-seeing it! Thanks a lot Richard! Grrrrrrrrrrrrr! 😡... Thankfully, also I think we are similar ages, as we are both modelling the exact same era, so the tips and tricks are even more useful to sprucing up my own layout. However, mine is all the way up in Scotland, based heavily around the Scotrail Push Pull era of arguably the best livery the Class 47 has ever worn (Intercity Blue stripe) and so, so many beautiful large logo Class 37’s ; )
Back to Richard’s videos though..... Even if I didn’t like trains, or modelling of any kind. I would still watch with the same intense fascination. Instantly finding myself hypnotised & so peaceful, reaching an almost ‘zen like’ calm & a quieting of the mind, as Richard takes us on his journey. Not to mention his eye for detail and precision, with every single aspect, which I think anyone can appreciate how utterly astonishing & stunning his creations are .... Richard is correct though people. You will also see the same skill and attention to detail, if you follow the equally fascinating @DaveClass47 @ Dean Park, who also has ‘the gift’ and who’s videos I find equally hypnotic....

Nice subtle but effective weathering on the coaches. I keep staring at my clean nse rakes, about time I weathered those in!
It's surprising how effective the "paint removal effect" (as I call it) looks. The roof on the 47 - around the yellow, always looks effective if a lot of the grime is scrubbed back to the yellow! It gives the effect that's it's been through the loco wash and the brushes couldn't get to the tight areas.

    Hi Richard.
I don't know if you realise this, but IPA makes for an excellent paint stripper.
Buy it 99% pure and add a but of water to activate it, and you can dump a complete model in a spaghetti tube to remove all the paint without damaging it at all.
You can leave the glazing in too, and the glue holding the glazing in will soften and you can pop it out... it needs a scrub with IPAto get the vehicles paint off, so once the glazing pops out, use some clean IPA to clean it of any residual paint
IPA can also be used for renumbering locos, just put some on a cotton bud and rub it away.
The surface is shiny, so give the area a coat of gloss varnish, fit your decals, another coat of gloss to seal it (and hide the shiny backing film), and then give it a coat of satin/matt depending on how fresh you want it to look.
I made a couple of videos about how I do renumbering, including one where I took a named loco and made it an un-named example!

I'm pretty sure the First Class coach would be at the front of the rake so the wealthy passengers were first out on arrival at their destination - and the brake coach at the rear meaning there would be no partition in the middle allowing continuous access on the entire length of the train !!

Although I'm predominantly a military modeler in 28mm/wargames scale I really enjoy your channel. Your weathering/painting techniques are readily adaptable to tank and vehicle models and I particularly like the subtle and realistic results you attain. I actually started modelling with Hornby/Tri ang train sets at a very young age, (though I later moved to 'the dark side' of wargaming/modelling) and I get a nostalgic buzz from seeing model engines and rolling stock I owned as a small boy run on your excellent and impressive layout (The BR Class 37 and 47 being fondly remembered favourites...)
The other thing I enjoy about your videos is the scenic and groundwork tutorials. Again, your considerable skills and eye for detail are relevant to the military diorama modeler. BUT... I have a QUESTION??? (It's not related at all to any of the above!)
WHO does the background music for your videos? As a fan of 'jangly-guitar' Indie music I just love the musical interludes you include.
Thank you for such an entertaining channel and keep up the good work!
    xx SF

I personally find the subtle effect created by removing the ribbing from the older Mk 1 coaches to be rather desirable. The newer ones almost tend to be too perfect, even if it's probably more appropriate at this kind of scale.

The rolling stock is looking good, but as a signal pedant it makes me wince every time I see that branch line coming up to meet the mainline without a controling signal on it. I'm quite surprised you didn't put the IR sensors in the track when you laid it, although if you're planning on using the Train-Tech DCC 'block' signals you don't need IR sensors.

It's been a real treat to see more videos that you've made recently. I have watched a few channels but feel that some layouts are a little overdone for my taste. What I mean by that is, if there was an inch of free space to spare on their layout there would be a train passing threw it. I'm not saying it's bad, some people might like that sort of thing. I've always went about like, what do I see in the everyday typical world and try to replicate it as best as I could on my layout!

Have to say the thing that really makes the scene for me is that platform with the control cabinets on.
I'm wondering if it's because it's something that is next to the trains when they're moving that gives the correct idea of movement?
Are there any plans for signal gantries or pedestrian bridges or other clutter of a similar ilk?

Sorry I gotta say it, if your layout is 85- early 90's then those Van's would be much more likely to be the older livery of grey and red/light pink as they weathered down, some Van's were painted RFD but they were low in number that were mainly just towed around for display purposes at public events, please dont take this the wrong way I love your videos the work you put into them is superb it's just bugging me is all sorry, your period and it's mainly the MOD services going to luggershall, marchwood to kineton or Bicester through didcot is I assume what your trying to replicate red & grey honest they were
