- In this update I take a look at a few things I've been working on in the background over the past few weeks. Also get some water in the canal, add graffiti and check some new ready to place plants for the gardens.

Very nice update. I like the flowers and the canal boat makes the scene come to life. Martin. (Thailand)
The grafitti is great - when I had a model railway, in the early 1970's, I inherited some buildings and rolling stock from an uncle who had a large layout in the late 1950's, early 1960's. Some of the buildings had 'Ban the bomb', and the CND logo painted on them. There was also a skull and crossbones painted on a PW hut. I always liked that. Made me think that possibly, kids had been using it as a 'den'.
Boat is crying out for some barge fenders! Couple of little boxes on the roof with some herbs / flowers and maybe a couple of bits of canal art - watering can with a flower on it. Cheesy but authentic!!!
"Clag" made me chuckle. Nice effort.
I think it would be a riot if one of the gardens had a miniature garden railway in it.
ugh, imagine aha!
Particularly if it could be made to work!
True story: You easily fooled my 17yr old as he walked in my den while I was watching and he was puzzled as to why I was watching trains drive around. When I explained it was a model he was amazed! Great work!!!
My grandad had a great big set in the loft he spent all of his adult life on but he got parkinsons and eventually couldn’t climb up anymore. About 5 years ago he tried to make dinner and accidentally caused a fire. He was ok as a neighbour dragged him out before there was too much smoke but the set and the house ended up burning down. My grandad is no longer with us but watching you develop your layout reminds me of him.
Thank you.
Having said that, this is one of the best layouts, and I keep coming back for your updates, thanks
Looking good. A pair of lock gates would really have finished off the near end of the canal though ...
Outstanding, great work sir. Having had some experience of those industrial wheelie bins at least one of them will have been set on fire at some stage!
The narrow boat and the canal are a wonderful touch. Well done.
Gee those gardens came up a treat, what a difference a bit of colour can make. Thanks for sharing.
One of those gardens is missing a old Triumph Dolomite rotting away with the wheels and doors missing. Anyway excellent work.
Why a dolly sprint, why not a Austin princess or rover sd1?
No. You want an old Ford Capri. It'll rust up a treat.
That canalboat made me smile, as a watcher of "Cruising the Cut" and hearing you talk of it did make me smile as you got a lot of things correct!
Nicely done!
Hi Richard very realistic scene, they feel like real places, and in the eighties especially with the opening music, top model rail modelling cheers darryl
The water & canal boat are so realistic my brain stopped for a second when it went *clunk* as you put it down!
Fantastic work 👌🏻 my late grandad had a narrow boat and I have many fond memories of it! He taught me to fish off off the front and rear with my little fold up rod! That would make a cool diorama! The boat was called Suky. Brilliant 👍🏻👍🏻
Excellent layout. A very enjoyable, absorbing and relaxing video.
My left ear really enjoyed this video. My right ear was jealous.
Astleyfam, I know how you feel!
Grab some food and a drink and sit back and watch your incredible channel, layout is starting to look in good shape 😁👍
As usual I'm in awe of the detail in this layout, fantastic work. That signal gantry makes a big difference.
Maybe add a chain around those wheelie bins since they'd definitely end up in the canal, and a road sign or bollards to prevent vehicles driving into the water?
Adding superelevation to the curves was SO worth it. Great progress. Made my good Monday even better. Thank you.
Railway bridges near me don't have graffiti just patches of paint where they paint over it. Different colour paint squares would look real on the wall and bridge normally brown.
Looking good. The attention to detail really makes the scene
The plants certainly have added colour to the gardens. I like the canal boat too and a padding pool. (A sore point in this house at the moment.) Martin (Thailand)
your old layout was excellent, but this is even better! the track especially looks terrific
Looking great! Slow and fiddly work...but that's the part of the fun of building a model railroad!
Great video again Richard. Always look forward to seeing them, even though I find them totally out of sequence. The lock idea would be a great one to do, but then you may need a lock keepers cottage/house.
Superb detailing, and maybe the addition of planters or maybe some logs on the roof of the narrowboat as used for firewood would just finish it. It all gives me ideas for my layout.
Just another Brilliant video from the King of model railways,Jim.
Very nice job on the canal and canal boat. Really enjoy your videos and watching the progress and detail on your layout. Thanks for taking the time to put these videos together and sharing them.
The layout is looking fantastic Richard, amazing how much work you’ve done in such a short space of time! That signal gantry really looks the part as well 🙂👍
Amazing ! I’m hooked, can’t get enough of your enthusiasm and attention to detail :))
OMG this is amazing those gardens look absolutely brilliant and the canals looks so real,
You have done a wonderful job richard you are an amazing model maker, i have learned so much from you and richard from new junction who you know and is local to me just a great job mate all the best john from rugby
So glad scenery is months off on my N gauge layout, taking a lot of inspiration and ideas from this layout, it certainly takes modelling to the next level, brilliant work!!!
It `s amazing the difference a few shrubs, flowers etc. makes to those backyards. Love what you have done with the canal and the long boat and I don`t mind the odd bit of graffiti. The running session was very enjoyable. Cheers Greg
Excellent work Richard! The canal, gardens and graffiti are brilliant. You bring the '80s alive in the South East! Are you sure you weren't a real life artist in your teens, very convincing, lol!! :-)
The master at work. Great stuff. The canal looks excellent.
Think you've proven you made the right decision starting the new layout. Absolutley love it
Stunning and makes me badly want to take this up as a hobby after not being able to afford it as kid in the late 70s when my mates got me into bunking off school to go ....... trainspotting!
Nice use of flowers and bushes. I used parts of the same brand of Bubbliea plants on my disused siding...they are cool. I found the green foliage on them a bit GREEN for my particular scene, so I picked off the purple flowers and glued them carefully on to some woodland scenics fine leaf foliage. I have to say they do look good on a layout. Nice bit of running at the end too ;-)
Cheers Dave. I'm impressed with the plants so far, just adds a little something to break things up. The buddleia is probably my favourite, such a common sight on the railways.
Hi I really am enjoying watching your videos and seeing the progression on your new layout. I find your hints and information on how to do thing very useful and it always looks so realistic we'll done keep up with the fantastic work
The layout is coming on nicely .Excellent
Love the added graffiti. The overhead signals are looking great to the main lines as well. The canal would have to be my favourite and while your previous canal looked really good, this one is much better. Great update and running session to boot. Great stuff and all the best Clint.
I like graffiti on layouts. Mine has plenty. It is the reality of the world and fun to do. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing.
I always enjoy watching your videos, the level of detail and realism is absolutely stunning. Great work!
Although I no longer operate a model railway ( I have returned to my No 1 love of model buses ) I do really enjoy you work on the layout.
Excellent work, as always. One thing which struck me was that an older-style terrace of houses would have a variety of boundary types around their gardens. You would see a few remnants of the original brick garden walls, privet hedging, some neatly tended but most a bit wild, and different styles of modern fencing, in different states of disrepair. Your larch lap panels all look very new. Some should be a silvery grey, having been weather-beaten for a few years.
Story I'm using is these council owned properties have had all the fencing replaced. Will be adding some older styles of fencing further up the street.
That running session - wow! Really does make the whole place come alive. Top work
Superb work, your layout is getting better all the time. Always look forward to your offerings!
I must thank you for getting a new camera. I also feel you deserve a donation because nothing you provide for my/our entertainment is free. The colour balance on the old one used to drive me nuts, but who am I to say anything lol. The picture quality is awesome and it shows off your work in much better vibrancy. Cheers
Excellent update Richard. Always nice to see the work of the Maestro. Unlike others on here, I found the sound just perfect. I use RHA MA 639 Stereo ear buds, the sound quality is just perfect. Keep up the excellent work Richard, well done. Cheers. John.
Another great video used to have a paddling pool just like that one was always patching it up and yes mine too was always filling up with mud off the lawn
Love the graffiti and definitely going to get some of the plants from Hattons as they look amazingly realistic
Keep up the great content
Can’t wait to see the branch line development
Hi Richard. Another fantastic update on your fabulous layout 😁 Well done for producing a really good video with your new camera 🎥 It’ll only get better in time as you get use to it!! Nice one 👍🏻Stevie.
I do love the instant professional look you achieve always a good view, thanks
si.
I allways sense when there's a video coming, was only last week I was thinking must be time for another Everard Junction video lol. Quality as always, that canal/housing section would be complete for the majority of people, if you solely focused around that area many people would believe the rest is done too. I'll look forward to the next instalment, take it easy, and as always do things at the pace you want and how you want, we're only here for the ride!
Wow, it's coming along nicely and quickly, nice work!
I like the canal boat!..you should add a pile of logs to the top of it if it has a stove. Also some old tyres on the sides and front as you often see them on older barges as buffers. Maybe a bicycle on top as well as you always seem to see one on board a real one too
Very nice .....so natural ....very good thx for sharing
Well done, you make it look so easy to achieve excellent results.
Nice 1 Richard , what you referred to as mooring Bollards on top the narrowboat are in fact roof vents for ventilation! The centre line would be the only attachment on the roof for mooring. Usually just a welded loop/staple shape. Usually a T stud on the fore deck and two dolly’s on the stern. Good video though only 19 mins in so far cheers
Excellent work as always, the scene certainly looks very realistic indeed. Enjoyed the running session and look forward to seeing you progress with the other scenic areas
I really like the way your work is progressing. The detail is spot on perfect.
Thanks Richard allllllll coming along fantastically mate!
Another great update, thanks Richard
Love canal scene where you put bins you could add fresh water and cassette toilet clean out station next to canal I've just stated mine new layout here in Thailand so looking for new ideas thanks keep up the excellent work. Mike
Looking good.. Cant wait to see the new 66 running on there... :-)
The canal boat is a nice touch
Someone's been rather busy! Well done once again and the picture quality seems much better with the new cam.
Great job again Richard 👍
Looking forward to the next video
Great video. Awesome set up.
Looking great so far. Can't believe how far this new layout has progressed in such a short time. Keep up the great work
Excellent progress. A few things for me, the main one is 06:35 all the front doors of the terrace block are blue, it really sticks out they shouldn't be all the same colour. Likewise, a few curtains in the windows would make a big difference. And finally, a nice touch would be a hanging basket or planter box of flowers on the canal boat (quite common). Great progress though, love it.
I will get around to it as I progress with the layout. It will be years before I've managed to do every detail.
Years? This is the internet generation, we want it now!
(only joking, I'm nearly 50, take your time, we are privileged to watch you work).
Really looking forward to the station stuff. Can't wait to see what you do there too. :)
Hi Richard, nice to see the murky water in use as opposed to the normal woodlands scenics realistic water, it looked like you had loads, but it doesn't go very far once you start pouring it. Lots to do still but it coming along nicely Andy
Thank you richard, excellent as always.
Those budlia would be excellent on my layout, glad you were sent them, i'll be picking some up in the future.
Your back gardens need a few gates in the rear fence as being terraces everything in the garden would have to come through the house so if you had a footpath behind you'd make sure you had access. Other things I think one of the wheelie bin would have been shoved in the canal in a quiet vandalised spot. Boat needs a bike lead on the roof. Other than than its coming on great look forward to the next up date
Had to watch this with subtitles at work, during the running session, the subtitles picked up the running noises as applause!
Great work, as always. I am a bit surprised you didn't do a sluice or lock gate on the canal, but clever work nonetheless. Seeing the trains run through capped it off wonderfully.
Great update as always, scenes really come to life with the water in the canal look forward to seeing the next update cheers Beeton Hough Junction (Dave C)
Today my love of model railways intersected with my love of the canals. Great stuff.
Excellant detailing, layout looks impressive, Fantastic
looks stunning just shows how much detail you can do to make it realistic well done :)
I love your work as usual very detailed and very inspiring ; greetings from France.
I certainly got a chuckle from the graffiti, I never knew there were so much railway/graffiti enthusiasts
yup these idiots risk their lives daily, most ive ever seen was in birmingham
Just found your channel and I'm enjoying watching! A suggestion for the narrowboat, perhaps some scale chopped logs stacked on top of the saloon ready for the stove.
Great work as always. It's really looking good now.
Those Tasma plants look quite good. I'll have to see if anyone here in Australia stock them.
Otherwise I'll have to put an order in with Hattons and to make it worthwhile I'll just have to buy another loco and some rolling stock :)
Absolutely LOVED it,,
Can't wait to see the next update.
Keep up the good work.
🏆
Thank you for sharing your vision.
Great job layout looking good
Unbelievably good and inspiring, thank you for sharing.
Canal water looks amazing
You've been watching Rosie and Jim haven't you?
Great update as always 👍🏻
Looks great!! You should cover up the brick work above the canal with something flat and sky blue. The reflection of the bricks in the water kind of lets it down a bit. Keep up the good work!!
Fantastic canal, I copied slight changes your old canal, was very happy with outcome....
Audio is a bit off. However, you have captured your excellent scenery so well in the video Richard. Your editing skills match your modelling! First class sir!
One of the gardens has to have either dumped rusty white goods, a piss stained mattress, or the accretion of household rubbish which is pushing one of the garden fence panels towards the canal, which in turn is spilling onto the grass verge... for that added taste of authenticity... great layout...
Love the 80s music as a soundtrack. Adds to the immersion.
Great video update and great work well done.
It just gets better and better. Superb work. Can I suggest bicyle(s), planted flower troughs and traditional canal boat wear for the barge roof and maybe even a sunbather?. Cheers, Bob
I took one look at it and I was speechless, it's coming on really quickly
