Dad, Fred Blucher, Flew C-46's out of Kunming (both airfields) in WWII toward the end of the war. He flew in and out of all the fields that were named in the movie in Burma and China, all the way down to Hanoi.
Just after 7:09 one guy says that he's from my home town of Winnipeg, Canada. It's strange how that city is mentioned in so many movies. I just saw another one too, but I forget which. And of course it's mentioned prominently early on in Alfred Hitchcock's remake of The 49 Steps, with Robert Donat. Winnipeg gets mentioned much more often than many cities that are much more well known now to world audiences.
The Chinese army was equipped with German arms, including, helmets. This film was made at the beginning of WWII. The Studio had no access to Japanese helmets.
I would quit watching too after finding that out, except that Gene Tierney is in this, and she is too beautiful to miss any of her films! So here I will stay, at least for a while. Now having seen it, she is very strangely miscast, but she's always so beautiful that I'm mesmerized by her. I also saw/heard none of the spots with missing sound that the OP here mentioned. The sound is fine throughout the whole thing.

Robert Blake played Chandu, called Gunga Din by George Montgomery as a nickname.
Fun fact: Victor McGlaglen was IN the 1939 film Gunga Din.
If I’m not mistaken, Elizabeth Montgomery is related to Robert. She is his daughter. I’m pretty sure.
@stevenhall9349 • Yes, you are correct. She was his daughter.
ROBERT M. ELIZ MY MOM JUST HAPPENED XMAS SHOP TOGETHER 72 ....

Interesting the the Japanese imported german soldiers to machine gun the chinese at film beginning.
And chyix reaally go for that kind of treatment?
In hindsight the Japanese were right about the Chinese.
1941 $50,000 would be over a million dollars today.
Is it George Montgomery related to Robert Montgomery?
doubtful his full given name is: born George Montgomery Letz
I did not know that the Japanese used German style helmets.
The Chinese did buy German helmets and other equipment: so did the army of the Irish Republic. The Japanese had their own-style helmets.
NO / ROBERT IS HER FATHER ... THEY DIDN'T GET ALONG ...THE BASEBALL PLAYERS LOVED HER ...
Gene dies in the end😺
Sorry you good people have mistaken George Montgomery for Robert Montgomery , Elizabeth Montgomery father not George Montgomery
And how did the villain get all the way back to aJapanese controlled area so fast.
Because that is what is says in the script
Looked like Germans and not Japanese.
They were allies then
