    Massive Darkness 2 is definitely worthwhile, Jesse. Do not be dissuaded. After playing my friend's copy that lives out of state I really wish I had bought it. Thankfully, I have Cthulhu Death May Die coming to scratch a similar itch but still want MD2. My neglected games include Here I Stand Anniversary Edition that I got about six years ago, Hall of the Mountain King, and Fall of the Mountain King. I actually have quite a few more unplayed games but feel particularly bad about neglecting these and simply struggle to get the desire to learn the rules and pull them out but still actually want to play them all.

    Hildegard was one of my favorite games of just year. I sat down to learn the game... And I played through the whole thing in one long setting. It's fantastic. Find a free day and go for it. I just grabbed the expansions, and can't wait to make another run through it.

    Oathsworn is so worth it. Holy Cow Painted! Do it! Did the entire campaign and we loved it. Took us about 75 hours. The game I need to get to the table is ISS Vanguard.

    Every time I hear this about Mage Knight I want to jump into a teaching game. Mage Knight isn't complicated. Rather, it has a very wide rule set. Each thing you go to in the game has a couple of rules surrounding it, but none of them are super complicated. It's more a matter of playing a few games to get those various smaller rules down. I think it's ultimately the rule book that fosters this perception, but not the gameplay.

      I was about to put the same thoughts down. I totally agree that Mage Knight isn't complicated. It is deep and you can spend a lot of time with it and learn something new each time. I absolutely love this game because it is so satisfying to play. It isn't difficult to get started with but the reputation of it being a hard game puts people off. Top 5 game for me.

    AH lcg... I got an old 2-player core and one extra scenario pack about 1.5 years ago. Then, end of last year, my LFGS had all the old Dunwich cycles on clearance (because of the revised sets) for $6 a piece and I found the Dunwich Legacy expansion for like $20. Thought that was all good, up until about 6 weeks ago. Then found the Path to Carcosa campaign expansion for $44 and thought it was a great deal. Then Scarlett Keys bundle for $75. Then...
    Now I have 4 campaign+investigator sets, old core, revised core, 6 scenarios, and the 5 premade investigator sets. I bought a laminator to make dividers (using some files from BGG), an insert for the revised core, and a card storage for like 3000+ cards. What was that, like $400-500 in 6 weeks??? 🤦
    Just started the Dunwich campaign with a friend last night, so at least that's a start.

    It was almost too easy to pick three for me... Viticulture (including Tuscany), Mind MGMT, and Zombicide 2nd Edition. (Though, shout out to West... I got the deluxe Everdell base game at GenCon 2022, punched all the pieces, learned the rules... and it STILL hasn't been tabled.)
    Viticulture was a BGG Secret Santa gift from 2021, Zombicide 2nd Edition (including the two campaign expansions) was the first Kickstarter I ever backed, and Mind MGMT is supposed to be one of the best hidden movement games at 2 players (which is a lot of my gaming these days)... and they just don't seem to get onto the table!!! One of these days, I'm certain of it.

  • @briant2438
    @briant2438 Рік тому

    Pew pew. If you want it, get it tabled! Being a solo player, most games on my list are ones I haven't gotten to yet due to playing something else... But for another video... Should do a, Games that you really want to play but can't get tabled because your game group isn't asking to play... I have Lords of Hellas, War of the Ring, Rebellion, and coming soon Guards of Atlantis 2... All great games but not sure when they will get played due to really being group games (or at least not solo) for the true experience.

    My picks are Cloudspire, which I love so much, but only played it once with my friends. It's too messy in many ways.
    Human Punishment: The Beginning, only played it once too. I feel like it's too heavy for a social deduction game.
    Nemesis Lockdown, whcih I don't feel the urge to play it. Maybe too similar to the original game.
    BTW, I love Scarface 1920. It's a long game, but strategy-wise it's so fun.

    Massive Darkness 2 wasn’t great for my gaming group either. We play some big games for sure, but for me MD2 was unruly, big, and fiddly. Granted the classes are really neat, but I felt I was drowning in boxes of content. Also the amount of different cards, tokens, and bits needed to accomplish what it’s doing is just too much for me. I ultimately swapped it on my shelf for Chronicles of Drunagor. That may not be a super popular opinion, but I think sometimes these kickstarters start to get too big with too much stuff to deal with. Oathsworn is a good example of a huge game that uses a small amount of components - yes it takes a bit to learn the systems but I don’t need 40 different kinds of tokens, minis, boards, and cards all out on the table at once just in case this one mob spawns randomly, etc. Anyhow, I sold my MD2 for that reason and will forever be wary of kickstarters (especially CMON ones) that have so much stuff included. If I want a Diablo board game, I just reach for Sanctum anyhow. Thanks for the videos, love your channel!

  • @AmstradHero
    @AmstradHero Рік тому

    Okay, after a few videso, I hvae to say that I simply do not understand Mr GameBrigade's tastes. Also, the complaint about Massive Darkness 2 and saying "It's bad because you'll never have all those minis from Massive Darkness 1" ... I'm sorry, but WHAT???!?
    One: proxy them if you have to. You've got the cards, just proxy the mini.
    Two: Do you REALLY need even MORE monsters if you've got all the content from Massive Darkness 2? If you have all the mobs and roaming monsters from Massive Darkness 2, how PHENOMENALLY HUGE IS YOUR TABLE that you're going "you know what, I need MORE monster options"?
    This came across in the vein of "I've got to deliver a hot take here because everyone loves this game". Shaking my head. Jesse, definitely get it played. It's a great time.

    • @GameBrigade
      @GameBrigade Рік тому

      I didn't have an opportunity to state my opinion, but I firmly believe that MD2 isn't worth the space nor the time compared to other things in the space. It felt like a better version of Descent, but that game is 12 years old and already a dated system. Having little mini games that each character has for their ability is cute, but doesn't make up for the overall experience. It's a 6.

    • @AmstradHero
      @AmstradHero Рік тому

      @@GameBrigade I'm curious to know what dungeon crawls you think *are* worth the time then, because I've found MD2 rollicking great fun whenever I've played it. I'm curious as to what you think is better bang for buck in terms of time taken. At 2-4 players (I basically don't play anything solo), I've enjoyed every single game. At more players it runs long, but I can't think of a dungeon crawl that isn't as bad or worse at 5 or 6.

    • @GameBrigade
      @GameBrigade Рік тому

      @@AmstradHero that’s a good question, because in terms of traditional dungeon crawl mechanics it’s good, but it’s leaning on dated mechanisms. I feel like Chronicles of Drunagor has a more interesting leveling up mechanic giving players more agency in the way they design their hero. It has similar mechanics and am okay story. I haven’t finished it’s campaign yet.
      Oathsworn is a more modern take on the fantasy combat system, but not a traditional dungeon crawler, so Limit it there.
      Frosthaven has a way better combat system that is rewarding and fun to learn as you progress your character.
      I should really finish this and say that the conversation on these videos with Jesse and I are missing context. As creators it’s hard to have time to play games “for fun.” As we have to keep learning and playing new games. Just prior to this video Jesse and West talked with me for an hour regarding their feelings about Aeon trespass odyssey and telling me to sell my copy when I got home. So in this video I joked to Jesse that he should sell mD2 because of the prior conversation. It’s all sub context.

    • @AmstradHero
      @AmstradHero Рік тому

      @@GameBrigade That's very interesting to hear. I have both Drunagor and Oathsworn on the way, and I already have Frosthaven having played all of Gloomhaven (I also own Forgotten Circles, but haven't gotten about halfway through it, I could happily throw it in the bin and wouldn't feel any great sense of loss) To me, those fill very different niches, and honestly, I would say are more likely to remain on this exact list for more people than MD2, as they're big, involved and lengthy campaigns requiring significant ongoing investment rather than the simple pick up and play a scenario that MD2 provides. Also, while I really enjoyed Gloomhaven, I don't feel like it had the same sense of "fun" just from account of its weight and being quite mentally taxing - though maybe the last is because my partner and I two-handed characters because the balance felt notably off with only two characters.
      For me, MD2's fun comes not just the mini games, but the rapid feeling of progression during a session and the variance in the classes. Conversely, I know someone who recently finished all of Drunagor and said while they love that class/skill progression system, they ultimately found that a lot of the classes ended up having the exact same skill upgrades, which actually ended up making the classes feel less unique, and that they found the loot system in the game pretty uninspiring. They still loved the game, but they outlined very different strengths and weaknesses to what I see in MD2.
      I agree the context of playing games for content is creators is going to be a bit different, but if you can't ever play games just "for fun", then that almost feels like you're sacrficing the hobby for the sake of the hobby. Either way, thanks for responding. It was good to hear your opinion with more context and detail than in the video.

    100% agree on Shea and RTFM. It is a travesty he is just doing content on Rahdo's channel. Learned how to play so many games on RTFM, his style and presentation were great. On RTFM he was covering games that we have similar taste on... On Rahdo, he is doing this opposite. So many games I have no interest... I don't know if that is a change in Shea's tastes in games or just the content that Rahdo wants to cover.
