OMG! Thank you, thank you, thank you. Finally, a video I can watch and follow with the products listed for the viewers. I have been searching on FB groups among other sites/videos and I can never get a straight answer. Great tank set-up. Thank you so much for making this video.
@@patriciasbunch9884 both of my leopard geckos were rescues and have eye deformities and other special needs, so they can't have a full blown bioactive, but I have been giving them both dig boxes for a few months and they both use them quite often. Ooh yay, perfect timing for me! I was going to redo my rankins dragon Chomp's enclosure to bioactive but he started brumating, so my leopard gecko Chocolate Chip is next on my list!
Thank you for this video! So many have bio active leopard gecko and crested geckos in one which makes no sense consider they need completely different things lol. I'm setting up my bio active leopard gecko rank rn and this is very helpful!
Good morning Elle, hope you're Sunday is amazing!! The 2 of you should go into business building and designing tanks for folks, you'd be amazing doing that!!
Greetings from My Cuban False Chameleon, Crested, and very recent rescue Leo here in South Carolina! Found you from Clint's channel. This is awesome, just had an adult leopard gecko kind of fall into my lap because someone was just ignoring it and he was rather neglected. I always want something naturalistic and the whole paper towel/tile thing just doesnt look right to me so this looks right up my alley! I think this will be my next project.
Hey, thanks for using a Genuine Arcadia lamp. Appreciated. The species of plant that you have are all 'high light' requirement species and would need a PAR of around 150-200 minimum to be able to grow properly. I look forwards to seeing this build develop over time.
Thank you so much, i was thinking about getting a new enclosure for my leopard gecko and had no ideas but i saw your video and now i am inspired could not say thank you enough!!!!
I have never seen such a beautiful tank. If you had a kiln and could join parts of fired clay enclosures together, that would be amazing.I don't have a leo,but I do have a garg and he does not bite.
Yep! That's the one. 😊 It is actually 50 gallons - 40g breeders actually hold 50 gallons if you calculate the volume. I've never understood why they're called "40g breeders" 😅
A couple questions 1. Where did u get ur shirt?! I love it 2. How do u keep the succulents alive… all the ones I put in my leopard geckos tank dies. Except one… any tips I would appreciate 3. Also what thermostat do You use with the DHP?
Its funny to see people majing all these trpoical like vivariums for their leos and ive always thought it wierd because theyre from arid places. A desert like habitat is tge best and a lot easier to replicate than people think. Your videos are awesome!
Is a bioactive enclosure a good idea for your first reptile? I’ve been wanting to purchase a leopard gecko or bearded dragon for years, I’ve been putting it off until I feel like I’m at the right moment in my life where I can give it all the attention and enrichment it needs- but when I do decide it’s time I’d love to do a bioactive set up! What’s your opinion, or do you feel like it might be too much / a bad idea for a newbie reptile owner? Thank you so much and thank you for your videos, they’re always so informative and you’re the sweetest ❤️
It's probably late, but I think it's a great idea! As long as you're willing to put in extra money and work at the beginning, the rest is pretty easy. Bioactive tanks are supposed to take care of themselves, that's why you add springtails and isopods
Could you use arid springtiles in this enclosure? Looks amazing btw!! I'm planning on getting a leopard gecko in a few weeks just slowly buying what I need.
I’m a bit confused. Converting my daughter’s Leo vivarium to bio active. For lighting….currently running a shade dweller UVB and an Arcadia DHP. What do I need to do for bio active setup? I’ve seen posts to add a jungle dweller….don’t run all 3?
Hey! ! This vid wa really helpful... and ik u made that big hide, but do u know anywhere where you can get hides that look like that? Bc I've been looking but I cant find any that look like that.
Thank you for this. I am thinking of getting a Leopard Gecko next year and I want a bioactive set up since my toads like their forest floor so much. An arid environment presents several challenges but this seem to be a streamlined build. I am a little concerned about hides that I can't extract the animal from though. If I suspect a sick or injured animal I want to be able to get to them. Does your 'cliff dwelling' open or come apart in some easy way?
I know you mentioned that the DIY substrate was 40/40/20 but just out of curiosity do you have the measurements of how much of each you actually use or was it like an eye ball kinda thing.
Pure sand is not a suitable substrate for leopard geckos, a soil/sand or soil/sand/clay mix is best. If you keep up with spot cleaning you can go several months between substrate changes. If you go bioactive only minimal cleaning is necessary.
Be sure to do extensive research from reputable sources before getting any animal. You need an enclosure (adults need a 40 gallon or larger, you can start with that or start with a 20 gallon and upgrade later). New reptiles should be quarantined on paper towel (ideally for three months) to monitor their health. After, a soil/sand or soil/sand/clay mix (or half textured tile, half soil mix) is ideal. You need three hides minimum: warm, cool, and humid. You need a heat lamp (such as a halogen bulb) connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat, and a tube UVB bulb (such as the Arcadia shadedweller) is very beneficial as well. You need a digital thermometer/hygrometer. Also a water dish, climbing enrichment, plant cover, etc.
If my beardy has started spending all of his time under his cool hide, should I stop feeding him? He has never brumated since I've had him, so I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to do.
Great bio setup Elle was it that expensive going with name brand materials? Bio active setups just intimidate me seem like a lot of steps and I’m not that imaginative you and Den make great living environments for your pets.
You can check the humidity of the soil before putting it in with a digital hygrometer. The ideal humidity range for leopard geckos is 35-65%. Temporary spikes above that are fine. The substrate shouldn’t be too wet, but it doesn’t need to be bone dry either. Some moisture is fine.
Is there anything you would change or add to this setup? We are beginners and want to use your buy list and video as a guide before we bring a leopard gecko home. Can they go right into this environment after set up or does it need to sit for a period of time?
When is it a good time to add reptile soil into a tank ? Also, what is a recommended tank size that's not harmful to your geckos? I have one in a 20 gallon and a smaller one in a 10 gallon.
New reptiles should be quarantined on paper towel (ideally for three months) to monitor their health. After, as long as you’re confident that the gecko is healthy and your husbandry is correct, you can switch to a soil mix. Adults need a 20 gallon long bare minimum, and 40 gallons (36x18x18”) or bigger is strongly recommended.
Hey Elle I’m new to your channel my little brother is 5 and he loves leapard geckos so I was wondering what’s a good size tank for like a small leapard gecko and where do you get you heat pad and prob from and I love your videos
Hey, loved all the info you gave on the video. I’ve been wondering why is that some people make bio active tanks with the drainage layer and some just add the soil directly to the tank, is there a difference? Preference? Is it related to where each person lives? I couldn’t find anyone addressing this
For a high humidity tank, you basically always need one to make sure the water doesn't just sit on the plant roots, and that the soil doesn't stay muddy. For a dry tank, you probably don't need one. I just put one in in this tank just in case, because that leopard gecko loves to splash around in her water dish. 😅 So I just wanted to make sure the water had somewhere to drain to.
🥰 thank you! I designed this one. We don't sell these specific sweatshirts (because I couldn't find a company that made them that were comfortable enough/the print lasted long enough) but we do sell them as short and long sleeve shirts in our Etsy shop (EllesReptiles.etsy.com)

The substrate has been amazing. I'll definitely be using this mixture again when I redo both of my leopard geckos' tanks. No bathroom problems, and she seems to enjoy digging in it 😊
@@ellesreptiles Thanks for the fast reply! Will be trying it out for my tank, quite excited since I couldn't find much bioactive tanks that had a substrate mixture that looked like the natural habitat :) Thank you so much!
Hello I have a couple question about the substrate. 1. Do you have to have the bio shot when setting up the tank. 2. I know you stated a 40/40/20 mix ratio about how many cups of each item do you use for a 40 gallon tank thank you.
I trying buying some springtails and isopods without doing enough research on their humidity requirements I put them in my leo tank and they all died 😢
A range of 35-65% humidity is ideal for leopard geckos, as measured by a digital hygrometer. If you decide to try using a cleanup crew again, make sure you provide a humid retreat for them. There are also some species of isopods that tolerate lower humidity than others. You can also use darkling beetles, which do well with lower humidity :)
Of course I forgot that one 🙃🤦🏽♀️ Sorry about that! This is the kit I bought: www.joshsfrogs.com/36x18-desert-pant-kit.html (I also added it in the description, so thanks for letting me know! 😊)
You don't have to use one! 😊 I mentioned in the video that I only used one because my leopard gecko likes to play in her water dish. So that way all the water she spills out nightly has somewhere to go. I also just wanted to be extra safe about the succulents roots not staying wet (I've had zero luck with succulents in tanks in the past, but I'm pretty good at keeping them alive not in tanks, so just thought I'd try 🤷🏽♀️) So hopefully it works out 😅
