  • Last week, Dr. Celeste Kidd, Assistant Professor of Psychology at UC Berkeley and director of the world-renowned Kidd Lab, joined Xer Obi Felten for a virtual fireside chat at X.
The Kidd Lab is one of the few labs in the world that combine sophisticated behavioral experiments with computational models to better understand how humans learn and form beliefs. Kidd has received multiple awards for her work - including the American Psychological Science Rising Star award, the Glushko Dissertation Prize in Cognitive Science, and the Cognitive Science Society Computational Modeling Prize. Kidd was also named TIME Magazine's 2017 Persons of the Year for being one of the "Silence Breakers" speaking out against sexual misconduct.
In this talk, Celeste Kidd unpacks how we acquire knowledge, form beliefs, and become “certain” of things. In a time that’s rife with uncertainty and misinformation, this talk helps give a foundational understanding for understanding the world itself.

Half a million decision each day doesn't make sense. That would be on average about 8 decisions per second given 7 hours of decision-free sleep. It is estimated to be more around 25k (Source: Sahakian, B. J. & Labuzetta, J. N. (2013). Bad moves: how decision making goes
wrong, and the ethics of smart drugs. London: Oxford University Press.)

Should one be careful about making binary conclusions when using data that only provides binary responses? That is, what conclusions could be drawn if the study was repeated and a third choice, "other" was presented as well as yes or no?
