Good video - thanks. Love non-league, and it's good to see clubs keep their support when they fall on hard times. Clubs like Hereford, Darlington, Scunthorpe and even Scarborough, who were once a new league team in the 1980s, used to form the backdrop to my Saturdays as a child listening to Sports Report. I support St Albans City, but moved to Colchester in 1988 so started going to their games. Relegate out of the league at the end of the 1989-90 season. It was differetn then, as tey stayed porofessional and lost out to Barnet (one promotion place) the only other pro team at the time, then came back up the next year. Now it is all fully professional, and a much higher standard - I do fear if they went down, they might not get back up. Look at Southend - much bigger club in terms of attendance. They are not finding it easy. Maybe they should make the national league the fifth tier of the football league. Then under that the regional leagues stay as they are.
There's something extra special about non league football - Hereford United were relegated to the conference in my first season as a supporter. I remember the arrogance around Edgar Street as we began our first game in the conference, expecting an easy win, only to be humbled by Welling United - I totally agree with you that the national league should be added in to the football league, or at least give them two automatic promotions and the play offs - look at how well the promoted sides do when they come into the EFL!

@jonsaddler3067 that was a really tough call based on the Premier league era, without Bury's early history Oldham wouldn't have had any real competition for the top spot!
@FozzQuaker it was the top flight that swayed it for me - Chester, Darlington, Aldershot, Southport and a few others could have easily snuck in to the top 9 or 10!
@FozzQuaker I honestly thought Scarborough were going to be up there with a shot for the top 10 but you are correct, they weren't really in the league that long.
I would have put Scunthorpe ahead of Hartlepool who had spent majority of thier history in 4th tier while Scunthorpe had at least a couple seasons in 2nd tier.

@@GamingBlomp sign of the times. Look at Greater Manchester. Oldham, Rochdale on the list. Stockport did go back to non league before their recent renaissance. Bolton and Wigan, though not non league, have dropped from the Premier League to League One. The only GM team that has gone forward in recent years is Salford... because of the cash they've had injected. And that's before we even go to the other parts of the north e.g. Hartlepool and co...!
@Matthew-bu7fg it's a shame so many of these teams are struggling, especially when you have clubs like Man City spending hundreds of millions at the same time!
@@GamingBlomp and that;s the thing... the Manchester support gets plugged into Manchester City and Manchester United. @Matthew-bu7fg I am seriously worried for the future of non league football if they remove the 3pm blackout for those exact reasons. I prefer lower league football, there's so much passion in the non league game but the sport is slowly being altered to favour the bigger clubs which is sad to see.

York have played in the 2nd tier and reached the FA Cup Semii-final. The idea that Hartlepool, Rochdale and Scunthorpe are bigger is ridiculous. Rochdale and Hartlepool have barely been out of the 4th tier.
Not mental at all. They're very similar sized clubs historically with similar sized fanbases. Both are bigger than Hartlepool and Rochdale though which I think is where the list went slightly wrong.

Think you been on your local cider no mention of chester fc riding near top of national league North league Cup semi finalist much bigger then most of your selections
@KeithFinnerty-k4d very narrowly missed out based on Bradford's early history, certainly a bigger club than us!
Thats a very fair list. I might just have Oldham ahead of Bury but its a close call
@jonsaddler3067 that was a really tough call based on the Premier league era, without Bury's early history Oldham wouldn't have had any real competition for the top spot!
That 10 is quite stacked...I would have put Darlington or Chester ahead BPA, who were in the League a lot longer than BPA
@FozzQuaker it was the top flight that swayed it for me - Chester, Darlington, Aldershot, Southport and a few others could have easily snuck in to the top 9 or 10!
@GamingBlomp I was even going to include in my honorable mentions Scarborough, but they didn't have quite the heritage in the League
Agreed about Darlington. Founder members of Div 3 North, two seasons in second tier (1920s)
@@JohnWinn-p5q I'm not being biased because I support them...promise, lol
@FozzQuaker I honestly thought Scarborough were going to be up there with a shot for the top 10 but you are correct, they weren't really in the league that long.
I would have put Scunthorpe ahead of Hartlepool who had spent majority of thier history in 4th tier while Scunthorpe had at least a couple seasons in 2nd tier.
@@alexchng3781 I think in recent years they'd certainly be higher!
I think Chester City should have made the cut.
@@davidking9222 that's a great shout and they were very close!
Yeovil Town are a fair sized club too and still get around 3500 to games!
@brucemay5409 they'd definitely had made the top 10 if I'd based it on recent years!
football league isnt the same without york city, hartlepool, southend and bury!
@jojoniile totally agree, and Hereford of course! 😉
Yeovil? I mean they were in the championship only back in 2014. Easily deserve a spot on this list
I agree with yeovil
@@trevorsparkes6977 me too, but Bradford Park Avenue get included lol
@Cheftoby1 undoubtedly if I'd based it on recent years as they spent a few seasons in the championship!
as a Forest fan I'm glad they didnt grace this list lol. Good side were Yeovil but in fairness they were perennially non-league before the turn of the millennium
@Matthew-bu7fg that's exactly why they haven't made the top 10 - I'm going to make a list for the biggest non league fan bases soon and I think Yeovil will be in there comfortably
FC United of Manchester are very familiar with Gigg Lane as we ground shared with Bury when first formed.
@douglasalexander6896 I remember that!
There's a bit of a link between FC United and Hereford FC - I believe the United owners helped to advise ours when the phoenix club was being formed and as a result we play a friendly against them most seasons!
Barnet ? Edger Davids? Underhill
@philipwoody2126 in recent years they'd have got in easily but overall they spent too long outside the EFL.
I visited the Hive this year in the FA Cup, brilliant set up but I hope they get to go back to Underhill soon!
All the clubs mentioned were league ckubs Barnet are non league club who won promotion other non league clubs elected to the football league includes Spurs who won the fa cup as a non league team ,Peterborough, colchester,Wimbledon fa cup winners Wigan fa cup winners and played in Europe
Bury And Bradford Park Avenue Are Pheonix Clubs
@RowsterLikeGSI6969 I'll always have a fondness for Bury as I really feel for what happened to them - hope they can climb through the leagues over the next few years
Off to watch them later today.
Bury AFC are the phoenix club. Bury are the original club
@richardhoward7503 how did they get on?
@GamingBlomp Won 3 - 2 but extra time took years off my life 🤣
Interesting, but what criteria did you use?
@@fman02 it's my own opinion mainly, but based on the number of seasons in the EFL and best ever performances.
Always enjoyed a trip to BPA.
@Fercough I've never been, but planning to make a trip to all of these grounds next season!
What criteria are you using to define “biggest?”
@shawnmason5551 I've looked at the number of seasons spent in each of the four tiers of the football league, major trophies etc but it's my own opinion based on those factors really. I wanted to put Hereford in there but couldn't really justify that 🤣
Never has a list better represented the plight of government funding and council funding in northern towns as this list.
@@Matthew-bu7fg there are an alarming number of Northern teams on this list, along with several others who didn't make the top 10!
This is why the 3pm blackout may still be really important, without it you may see more and more kids lean more towards watching Manchester United/City on TV rather than going to watch an Oldham or a Rochdale at the stadium!
@Matthew-bu7fg I am seriously worried for the future of non league football if they remove the 3pm blackout for those exact reasons.
I prefer lower league football, there's so much passion in the non league game but the sport is slowly being altered to favour the bigger clubs which is sad to see.
Am a Sheffield f.c. fan,
Now you have put Bradford park Avenue fc. On the list.
Sheffield fc 1857 The World's first football club. They also have the Order of merit. And only 2 Clubs in the world have it.
Real Madrid is the other club.
@terryodams2244 I'm planning a trip across to Sheffield FC at some point this season/early next - really want to do a vlog from there!
As a Oldham fan this isna fair list o have us ahesd of Bury but you also made some good points
@oafctom if I'd based it on recent history you wouldn't have had any competition for that top spot - Oldham shouldn't be a non league club, I hope you return to the football league soon.
I'll be coming to a game either towards the end of this season or early next, it's a club I've been meaning to visit for quite a while
@GamingBlomp Mate I've made spelling mistakes excuse me meant to say Is a Fair list I've have head us a ahead of Bury but you make some good correspondening points
@oafctom no worries, I knew what you were trying to say!
How are you feeling about your promotion hopes this year??
@GamingBlomp If we get promoted it be Via the play offs automatic promotion is now out of the question but we need to find the form we had early on in the season and start scoring again. If we can hit form the play offs are lottery and no reason why we can't do it.
@oafctom fingers crossed for you. I remember as a Hereford fan dropping into the national league and thinking it was going to be easy to bounce straight back, only to be humbled at home by Welling United on matchday 1.
Scunthorpe should be in the top 3 having seasons in the the champions
@gsrywebley4617 all of the top 3 have too!
You missed Southport of your list 1921-1978
Division four champion's
Fa quater final v Everton
@CarlJones-in8pm I had Chester, Southport, Darlington & Aldershot narrowly missing out!
(All above my own team, Hereford 🤣)
Good list. But scunthorpe below rotchdale? Really? (I'm a walsall fan)
@J-ts3po I must've changed the list hundreds of times 🤣 Rochdale were ranked higher based on their 100+ years in the EFL, though Scunthorpe definitely performed better in the years before their freefall!
Ps Walsall are having an incredible season, did anyone expect that??
Rochdale
You ought to have mentioned Hereford FC taking 20,000 to Wembley for the 2016 FA Vase Final
How many non league clubs could do that? 🐂
@irvz2087 that's a really good point!
Not many for the FA Vase!
I'm going to be doing a video on the biggest fan bases in non league football over the next few weeks - wonder how we'll compare in there!
Overdid the bias fear. Hereford _ FC are a glaring omission, even though at 9 or 10. Agree with Bury and Oldham.
@richardwebb5317 initially I had Hereford 8th but looking into everyone else's history that dropped to 9th, then 10th then we were out of sight 🤣
I would add Maidstone utd to the list. Great revival at the Gallagher since returning to the town. Longing to play The Gills in the EFL again one day
@@stuartbradburn3488 would be incredible to have them back - I included Maidstone in my FA Cup shocks video a couple of weeks ago!
My List Not Counting Phoenix Clubs
1 Oldham Athletic
2 Scunthorpe United
3 Southend United
4 Rochdale
5 Hartlepool United
6 York City
7 Torquay United
8 Barnet
9 Kidderminster Harriers
10 Southport
Boston are equally as big as Barnet and bigger than Southport imo, but I'm probably a bit biased.
@yellowbelly2855 in recent years they're both way ahead of Southport but overall Southport almost made my list!
@RowsterLikeGSI6969 that's a solid list - I think York & Barnet will be football league clubs next year!
What about Yeovil? they wouldn't look out of place in the top 10
@yellowbelly2855 they were another one that would've got in had I based it on recent seasons, they made it up as far as the championship which is such a great achievement!

@popatyourecords that's impressive! I played a bit of footy when I was younger but never got higher than national north/south level, so he's better than I ever was!
York have played in the 2nd tier and reached the FA Cup Semii-final. The idea that Hartlepool, Rochdale and Scunthorpe are bigger is ridiculous. Rochdale and Hartlepool have barely been out of the 4th tier.
@Robhalifax it was pretty close between all of them to be honest!
Wait, what about Leamington FC? 😂
@@pete456113 it was so close 🤣
Very sad what happened to hereford haveba soft spot for them

@prideofdurham4776 I did not know that! Might have to take a trip to check them out!
To say York are similar to scunny is mental
@rorymcardle15 in recent years it isn't very close but historically there's not that much between them!
Not mental at all. They're very similar sized clubs historically with similar sized fanbases. Both are bigger than Hartlepool and Rochdale though which I think is where the list went slightly wrong.

@@alexhart4763 I couldn't really justify putting them in unless I'd only based the list on the last 20-30 years or so - it was such an incredible achievement for them to reach the championship!

@alexhart4763 history was my main criteria yes, I think the top 10 would've looked very different if I'd based it on attendances... though that gives me ideas for another video!
Where would you put ex league club Maidstone Utd , a team that resigned from league after ground sharing at Dartford and beating Ipswich town last season
@trevorsparkes6977 I think they'd make the top 20, but there are still teams like Aldershot, Chester, Yeovil etc that didn't make the top 10 so it's a tough one!

Darwen FC.
@coops1964 so much history with Darwen! Bankrupt and reformed now sadly (2008 I think)

@CarlJones-in8pm they beat Real Madrid in 1923!
Bradford PA ? !
What a club were 100 years ago has no bearing on what they are now.. a local league's club with one man and his dog watching on

@@GamingBlomp That should be interesting
I'd go by televised games or living memory to appeal to more interested supporters

Great suggestion - I'd probably go back to the formation of the Premier League as that's a more familiar era - Oldham would easily be top of that list and I'm not sure Bradford or Bury would feature at all!
Why do all these kind of videos forget about Yeovil .
@chrishatton3620 they were on my list and if I'd based it on recent years they'd have easily been in there!

@CarlJones-in8pm I don't think it will be long before we see Yeovil in the league again.
Personally i think it will be a few seasons before Yoevil are back in the league saw them in the national league south , first game of the season against Havant&WaterloovilleFc lost 5-4 or 4-3 then went on to win the league
@CarlJones-in8pm they won it by quite some distance as well didn't they?

@jellybean8167 I guess I asked for that didn't I 🤣
Don't agree with one inclusion but that my feelings after being a Kiddy fan for 60+ years I'm not saying Kiddy should be in the top 10 but close. I agree with the history bits some big clubs at this level, but some clubs tick over and make non league what it is 'proper football' with idiots refereeing it.
@nolanpeter2748 which inclusion don't you agree with?
I trained with Kiddy for a year in the early 2000s (mainly with the youth team but had the occasional session with the first or reserves).
I shouldn't say this as a Hereford fan but Kiddy is a brilliant club - I'm planning to visit Aggborough very soon! 😁
