  • I just couldn´t stop filming the beautiful buildings in Flensburg and I had to go and visit the place where it all began, and find out about the legend of the Knight Fleno and the origins of Flensburg.
    Such stunning buildings and in a magical position on the Flensburger Fjord! Flensburg is a very special place, the most northern city in Germany. Btw, we do tend to say town and city intermittently in English, I had to look up the difference. And Flensburg is officially a city, so please excuse that I occasionally say town!
    My meditative videos show a calming and artistic view of the places I visit and the quiet, peaceful wanders I take through them. Medieval villages, picturesque cottages, beautiful cities. Relax and escape with me from the busy bustling world to my dreamy and serene slow living way of seeing my surroundings. Experience the magic of peering into the past and being in a fairytale, just for a little while.

    Another beautiful magical mix of pictures, voice and sound! Lauren for ambassador of Germany! Many people are stereotypical and often made it to south of Germany! The north of Germany is charismatic its own way. There' s a lot of more to see e.g. "Hansestädte", a bunch of cities around northern Europe, the Balltic sea, North sea, east coast of England and Belgian/Dutch/German " Rhein area".

    Lauren, you never cease to amaze me with your wonderful work and bringing us to places that I have surely placed on my list of "MUST DO's". Flensburg looks like a wonderful city with all of its history and different architecture to include the influence of the Danish. BTW, loved the butterfly between the 4:08 - 4:16 mark, so pretty. You have certainly inspired me to venture to the north of Germany in my future travels. Thank You so much :).

    The "Johannisviertel" was very close to become a slum and there were ideas in the 1960s to tear it all down and build a flyway over it. The construction of a dual carriageway bypass ( B 200) prevented that, but it took many years for the town's officials and the locals to understand that the entire area and not just the church and the court around it was a gemstone that was worth to be preserved and re-devoloped in a careful way that incorporated relics from the town's early industrial era in those narrow streets with its backyard trades and workshops. One of them has been made immortal in the character of plumber "Meister Julius Röhrich" .

    • @LaureninGermany
      @LaureninGermany  2 роки тому +1

      Hallo Christian! Omgoodness, and I thought it had been a beautiful, rather posh area to live, reminiscent of Notting Hill in London! Thank goodness people fought ti preserve the area. It’s absolutely a gem, as you say. Thank you so much for telling me about this.

    • @christiankastorf1427
      @christiankastorf1427 2 роки тому +1

      @@LaureninGermany Parts of it had been pulled down and car parks were there. The town had bought the area house by house in the 1960s and wanted them to be demolished for that street. Then came the era when people slowly realized that more historic buildings and valuable innercity living space had been lost due to those philosophies than by aerial bombing in WW II. The same thing is true for all those picturesque yards and former warehouses. Flensburg's "north" had become a slum or was not far away from becoming one, and the "north" starts at the "Neptune's Fountain". It was a painful and long process of learning and revaluation of the term "town" or "city" as a place were people LIVE and not only go there in their cars, park that thing and go into offices and shops. We know what followed: pedestrian districts, street cafés, meeting places, car-free zones, bypasses, and in the end costly renovation schemes. There is still a lot to do and there are "social hotspots" in town.

    • @LaureninGermany
      @LaureninGermany  2 роки тому +1

      @@christiankastorf1427 I did notice that people were doing some building work around the church. It really stood out to me that the houses were gathered around the church and that there were areas where people could meet. It’s unbelievable that planning councils still need so much convincing that people need the possibility to build and maintain communities.

    • @christiankastorf1427
      @christiankastorf1427 2 роки тому +1

      @@LaureninGermany Well,it was people who understood first and then the town had a contest who renovated his/her house along Holm, Große Straße best. That was in the 1970s and the results were horrid, much too colourful. But all that stucco work that had been hidden under layers of greyish paint and dirt became visible. People understood what precious houses that were. That was how it started. Ten years later an entire process to revive the innercity was underway.

  • @christiankastorf1427
    @christiankastorf1427 2 роки тому +4

    Flensburg grew in a valley that was cut by the waters of melting ice when the last ice-age ended. There is a stream that flows into the fjord. That stream causes the silting up of the harbour that once reached much further inland than today. In fact the St. Jaohannis settlement was on the eastern side of that water at the eastern slope of that valley and the town with its two market squares and two major churches St. Nicolas and St. Mary's grew along the western slope . The stream now flows underground and the major innercity street Friedrich-Ebert-Straße/Süderhofenden was built over its former bank. Before that the first and second railway terminals/stations stood near the southern end of the harbour. The railway lines and from the 1920s on a railway embankment that carried the track for the harbour railway separated the Johannisviertel from the town even more and isolated it. It was almost incapsulated and that led to its undisturbed survival.

    • @LaureninGermany
      @LaureninGermany  2 роки тому

      I saw the railway tracks that are between the harbour and the old town. I actually filmed them, but didn’t know about this to be able to tell people. Do you mean that the Johannisviertel was almost encapsulated? Or the part of Flensburg where the Große Straße is?

    • @christiankastorf1427
      @christiankastorf1427 2 роки тому

      @@LaureninGermany No, the Johannisviertel is the former fishermen's settlement east of the railway embankment and the original town streches along "Holm" and "Große Straße". "Holm" means something like island or peninsula,at least a settlement along the water. Basically Flensburg was just this street. The yards stretched down towards the water. That is why the parallels to "Holm" and "Große Straße" are called "Süderhofenden" and "Norderhofenden", it is where the "Höfe", the yards, ended. That stream fomed two millponds where there is now the festival hall "Deutsches Haus" and the "Friedrich-Ebert-Straße", then it flowed into the harbour, but about half a mile further south than today. In the 18th century that part of the harbour was given up because of that silt and gravel that had been spilt in it. The town had tried a lot to prevent that by holding muddy rainwater that poured down from the hillsides up and directed it into wooden boxes where the sediments could sink to the bottom before the water was discharged into the harbour. In 1855 the railway came to Flensburg. British railway pioneer Peto was responsible for that. The line ran across Schleswig-Holstein and it terminated at the tiny port of Tönning south of Husum. The idea had been to make export of British coal and industrial products to the Baltic Sea easier and prevent the expensive toll at the Sound between Denmark and Sweden. It was a failure because the Danish crown renounced that toll in the same decade when it got a huge cheque from a number of seafaring nations. And Tönning proved to be too small for ships that grew in size at that era. When Prussia annexed Schleswig and then Holstein, too, in the 1860s the town leaped a big step forward. The original railway terminal was replaced by an impressive building. The railway cut the town in two. After 1920 city planners around mayor Dr. Todsen succeeded with big plans. As I said the millstream vanished into a tunnel. The millponds, infamous for their stench and pollution from a papermill, a rice mill and an oilseed mill, were filled up. The only street into town from the south had been through a narrow cobbled street, "Rote Straße". The motorcar, bus and lorry had become more important, so the "Friedrich-Ebert-Straße" and "Süderhofenden" were built. The railway station was placed about a mile south of the city centre with easier links to Kiel, Hamburg, the Northsea coast at Niebüll and Denmark. The tracks in town were ripped out and the old railway station became Germany's first Central Bus Station, "Zentraler Omnibus Bahnhof", the godfather of all ZOBs in Germany. There were tracks along both sides of the harbour leading as far as the power station and the shipyard at the western quays and to the naval port at the east. They were of course linked to the new railway station but not as the crow flies ( see more on that later). I remember lots os shunting going on there until the 1960s but then it all calmed down. Those tracks (you mentioned the remains) form a Y-shaped junction. Each of them have to climb to the height of two bridges were they join and run along that embankment that had been raised when the ZOB was planned in 1927 or so. And so you have the busiest innercity throughfare plus all that buses on the one side of the railway embankment and the quiet St. Johannis quarter peacefully on the other. A footpath through that embankment is colloquially called the "mousehole", "Mauseloch". There are recurrent talks about a future use of the now abondoned harbour railway. But all those people who see a future for it should better have a look at the map. The track runs parallel to the major streets away from the centre and away from the railway station. It passes the papermill and only at the outskirts of the town does it meet the main tracks from Hamburg and Denmark. It would save no time to have S-Bahn or something like that run on that track.

    What a nice video Lauren .... you should get an award for this !
    You are a real ambassador for Flensburg as you do know so much of its history ... thks a lot !
    Left Flensburg 40 years ago and I still remember nearly every house , street or chuch in this video incl those places you did not show like the Grogkeller ( a famous dico on the Südermarkt in the 80th - nights with dancing and friends !!!)
    The priest in St Johannis was my religion teacher in the late 70th ...
    There are so many fountains in Flensburg as underneath the city there comes up a water carrying geological formation from Norway...
    this brings all the super clean fresh water that enabled and still allows Flensburg to produce the good beer and rum since centuries especially when it was part of Denmark .
    Flensburg had the second biggest fleet of that state sailing to the danish dominions and colonies in the caribs to fetch highly concentrated rummolasses which then was diluted with water, bottled and finally sold with high profit !
    The renovation of the Altstadt started in the 1970th and took until the 2000er years and it did cost billions ...
    as a result you can see a nearly undestroyed medieval city center ( ofc with some destructive 60th buildings like Hertie and Karstadt ) as nearly no bombs did fall on Flensburg during WW II .
    8:69 Neptun has lost his spear again ! was so often stolen . i still remember that was a running story in the newspapers ...
    celebrated my Abitur around that fountain .. what a nice memory I have to that moment ....
    as well as to my playing ground as a child near St Marien on the St Marienhofplatz...
    and the later long lasting visits to the famous Porticus pub ( where you could not only smell cigarette smoke at that time !! )
    thks again for this fantastic revival tour through Flensburg ...!!!
