    To me Jason Isbell is one of America's greatest songwriters period, any era. He stacks up with the best of the best who ever lived.

    This is my favorite song of all-time. I listen to it every day. He could have easily said, "I got drunk at a bar and got in a fight and my girlfriend dumped me in the car on the way home. And now I really miss her." Instead he painted a picture. It's a lyrical masterpiece...

    I read the following on his fanpage once and this might be the most brilliant interpretation I've ever read:
    Listen to "Streetlights", then "Songs That She Sang in the Shower" and finally "Cover Me up".
    Those three songs makes an amazing trilogy, They tell a story of addiction, that probably only could be told by someone who has been through all those motions.
    In "Streetlights" the protagonist is living an unsatisfiyng life, Drinking is more and more the way he numbs the hurt of his existential pain. While at the bar he observes people that's further down the line than himself (Marc/Little Em). The streetlights symbolize there's a way out, but light's too faint - he hasn't got the tools/means to break out of the decline. He blames life's complications (girl gone, dad idle, life in fast-lane), but are unable to address that changing his own mindset is the only viable way out.
    "Songs That She Sang in the Shower" is the protagonist hitting rock bottom. He's getting into a fight, alienating those around him, losing another girl. Focusing on that he's on his own, and what has been (Yesterday's Wine), he can't see that he needs help and emphasize the possibilities of what may be ahead.
    "Cover Me Up" is obviously about redemption - how the protagonist now sees how his previous mindset was so damaging. Now he's gotten help, and understanding that focusing on others, not himself, has given him the incentive to change his life, and the tools to do so. He's found that there's use for him. For good...

      Yeah. It’s the line of his that has stuck with me the most, especially coupled with the one before it. “And the church bells are ringing for those that are easy to please..” And I’ve heard them all. A lot. I also love his song Sunstroke. Reminds me of Elvis Costello’s Battered Old Bird, because of the breakdown.

    One of my favorite Jason Isbell songs. I sing it ALL the time. It is one of the most introspective songs of his (I think), based on his past as an addict until DBT fired him and he went to rehab and then yes, he met his now wife Amanda (in the video) and has been clean since. That song is a 11 for me. I have seen him since early days Drive By Truckers and I LOVE LOVE LOVE his writing. I see any show I can because as good as the videos are..live is OMG, he is amazing and is surrounded by SUCH a good band.

    I am from Muscle Shoals where Jason comes from. I can vouch that the first verse is actually about his former guitarist Browan Lollar, whom left the band in 2012 after punching Jason after a show one night. Since then they have reconciled but this was Jason’s way of clearing some of the air on what happened to Browan exiting the band upon releasing Southeastern.

      @@RockN2Country Hey, Don. If you've done any Corb Lund I've missed it. I don't know, of course, what suggestions you get but have an idea (?) of the quantity! Corb is at least a 4th or 5th generation cowboy.. for real. Ranch, rodeo, his dad was a veterinarian and on and on. He's from the Canadian Rockies. My wife, 7 year old daughter and I saw him in Nashville last year in a small-ish venue for a solo acoustic show (his band, "The Hurtin' Albertans --- gotta love that, right?! lol) is only 3 other people.. but he was alone that night. We somehow wound up very front, stage left. My daughter danced and sang every word to every song... he took a break to acknowledge her and let the crowd know about "this cute little girl rockin it out to every song"-- called us up to stage to talk to her (not me haha) for a second, thanked her for listening and took her personal request (one from his latest album, "Things That Can't Be Undone"-- "Sadr City" a song about---- WAIT!!-- I'm not gonna tell you about songs, it'd ruin the whole thing!! ;) but suffice it to say that of all of his songs, this "cute little 7 yr old requested THIS one!! ... her other favorite ( at least from the same album) is entitled "S Lazy H". Almost any of his would be great to see you review etc... but perhaps either of the two above would be a good introduction to Corb. No rush, whenever you get around to it.. I sure would appreciate it. I really, really dig your channel, style, mindset etc... glad I stumbled upon you! (I don't remember, but probably safe to say you were on the suggested/recommended list under "Lost in Vegas" guys! My name is Chris, from south central KY, screen name is based on Waylon's song because I first signed into UA-cam to watch and listen to him! :) Sorry for the rambling and verbose comment, but I know you're one who appreciates detail and background, so as you may say, " ..... so, there 'ya go!" The one thing I like about Jason is that it don't matter if it's a,love song it heartbreak song. It's never a country song it fits into any genre. His songs dont have a country lean like about a cowboy or a rural person. They can be about anyone someone in stock broker NYC or a plumber in anywhere usa.

    New subscriber and I’m really digging your channel. You REALLY need to check out Justin Wells. He’s a local Kentucky artist. My personal favorite is “The Highway Less Taken”. If you’re really a word nerd, you’ll love his lyrics. The live videos of his performances are generally cell phone footage and not great quality, unfortunately, but you can find album versions on UA-cam.

    Being Jason had a drug/alcohol problem, the song could be autobiographical, he may have gone through other women in his past. Thus, the experience.

    Here are a couple suggestions. You should do reactions for both Reckless Kelly and Micky and The Micky and the Motorcars. These are both well known Texas/Red Dirt bands. I couldn’t decide specific songs to request so you can decide. I will suggest using performance not just lyric videos for the reactions. There is plenty of good material on UA-cam to choose from on both bands.

    i feel ya on this one, but you missed a few thing about the genius of this one because it’s your first listen. he does some amazing songwriting things with this, pay attention to names of song s followed by statement of fact. “Wish You Were Here” how i wish you were here, for example. He’s the best songwriter we have active at this moment.

    • @RockN2Country
      @RockN2Country  4 роки тому +1

      @JayDub Yeah, you called it right--first listens are always a challenge, and that's what I like about it. there's a lack of predictability, and some artists/lyricists are less predictable than others. Jason is heading the list, but there are others who throw words and phrases together in such a way that requires multiple listens. One of the things some folks who are pained by watching me (or anyone) react to a song that they already know, is that they forget how they went through the same process of figuring the lyrics out. Jason, for instance, runs so deep and puts time into his wording and phrasing, and is uniquely gifted with words in the first place, that anyone who thinks they'll understand it on first listen is typically deluding themselves. The "Wish You Were Here" reference instantly made me think of Pink Floyd, as it's on of my favorite songs of all time, but he could put. twist on it if he chose since he had time to put the lyrics together and I had four minutes to figure it out. But the comments after I do a reaction are priceless to me, since folks are overwhelmingly kind in explaining things they see in a song. So bring it! (But with grace, I hope. :-))

    Without going into a lengthy diatribe about the 70s singer/songwriter zeitgeist (a lot of which revolved around the LA Troubadour scene), there was a fuzzy line between country, western, Americana that occurred around the scene that created Warren Zevon, Elton John, John Prine, Waddy Wachtel, Bonnie Raitt, The Eagles, James Taylor and perhaps the poster boy of the movement: Jackson Brown. You could easily review a number of Eagles songs and remain firmly within the genre of "country" music, but I think it would be fun for you to look at this Jackson Browne piece and give us your take. This song is the title track of his album "Late For The Sky" and is featured in the Scorsese classic, "Taxi Driver". ua-cam.com/video/kqYiHkx7ils/v-deo.html (if this isn't country enough, maybe do "The Weight" by The Band?)

    • @RockN2Country
      @RockN2Country  5 років тому +1

      @Christopher Neill So true about the stories those songwriters wrote. Warren Zevon was in such a different space, even (or especially) on his last album, which he wrote and recorded shortly before he died. And I love the song "The Weight" by the Band!! I'll keep some of those writers in mind, as I like doing different things along the way as long as I can reasonably tie it into the theme of the channel.

      "Super8 motel" is a great humorous song but most of his stuff is deep. Stockholm has a really upbeat tempo and a more poetic turn of phrasing. I really like it. Same album for both, I think.
