Red Diamond Rattlesnake Eats Pack Rat

The squirrels were making a racket on the slope just off the front porch this morning. I looked over the fence to see what it was and I saw a juvenile roadrunner near the squirrels and thought the roadrunner was just taunting them, but the disturbance persisted so I looked again and then saw the red diamond rattlesnake hunting. It climbed into a creosote bush and from there it extended its head down into a few borrows, sensing heat. It then fell off the creosote and went down a borrow. A pack rat came running up and died at the top of its borrow. The snake remained in the borrow for more than 15 minutes. I just assumed it had found more rats in the hole to eat, but then I looked back over and the snake had come back up to claim the rat.
