  • Soriah, which translates as “Milky Way” from Sufi, is the stage persona for the internationally recognized artist, Enrique Ugalde. Soriah’s craft is a blending of traditional Khöömei (Tuvan Throat Singing), tempered with Soriah’s own visceral force. Performances vary from being steeped in tradition and bound to its constructs to more experimental fascinations with electronic and acoustic accompaniments, and introducing Butoh and Ritual Performance Art. Soriah’s use of Khöömei as a transportive medium is an offering to nature in her own tongue, that of organic sound whether it be wind, water or the mimicry of animals. He is currently working to integrate his work into film and sound design.
Soriah takes an annual sabbatical to Tuva to study with various masters and to compete. The 2008 Fifth Quinquennial Ethnomusicology Symposium, “Khöömei: The Cultural Phenomenon of Central Asia”, has honored Enrique Ugalde, “Third Place”, the highest a non-native to Tuva has yet placed. The Üstüü-Khüree Festival awarded him “Best Foreigner” for their 2008 selection. In 2014, he won 2nd place in the Tuvan National Kargyraa Competition. The rest of the year Soriah travels the globe with extended tours performing in various cities and enclaves of Japan, crooning in the cathedrals and ruins of Mexico, and intoning in ocean caves and amidst the swamplands of America. The artist has been invited to perform at society events such as The 2009 Peace Ball in Washington, D.C. for Obama’s inauguration, and by brigand artist elites, to sing at various installations of note at the Burning Man Festival.
One becomes encased in an awe-laced ceremonial pallor while in attendance at a Soriah performance. A deep spiritualism imbues each piece performed, whether entirely traditional or exhibiting a fusion of music, movement and meditation that Soriah describes as Vocalized Ritual Drone.

Soriah, if you're ever on the Big Island of Hawaii we would love to have you perform. There are many tribal and spiritual performances that I think everyone would find riveting.

I was shocked, somewhat, but not terribly, at his AGT reception. I saw him open for Legendary Pink Dots, ran into him in the audience at a Skinny Puppy show, and by coincidence, he happened to be my cab driver once. His performance at the LPD show was nothing short of magical. It was at Berbati's Pan, where I'd also seen Cranes. Shame it's a donut shop now. Every time I'm in the vicinity, it smells like a sugar holocaust.

"Soriah, which translates as “Milky Way” from Sufi" Sufi isn't a language, its a mystical group. The name means is the "Pleiades" from the Arabic or "Princess" from the Hebrew. Same as Sarai, as in Abraham's wife's name.

Terradon Iler Thanks so much for the correction. I was paraphrasing the owner of the SORIAH restaurant in Eugene Oregon. Honestly, I came up with the title Soriah completely energetically and phonetically. I had no idea of any meaning behind it other than what it felt like when I intoned the name. It was a few years later that I discovered its mystical roots in the Sufi tradition. It may very well hold some other meaning in different languages. I was just understandably shocked when I heard this from the restaurant owner. It resonated strongly with what my ideas about the source of the frequency I was working with at the time. Thanks again and I will make sure to edit it properly.

+Enrique Ugalde you really should do a Reddit AMA.
And I'm glad you got this response. I read the intro and was like "Wait, it can't possibly mean 'Milky Way'...", those words always mean something themselves. Like the Hindi word for Milky Way is 'Ganges of the Sky' and the Chinese is 'Silver River'.
Though I'm no stranger to finding out what a pseudonym means long after it's been chosen, myself. Else I'd probably have shied away from this one.

+Terradon Iler and Enrique Ugalde You are absolutely correct. In Arabic actually Soriah or Thurayyah - as it is properly pronounced - means stars or a constellation of stars, hence the Milky Way intepretation.
      Beautiful work

@Enrique and @Fatima, also interesting to note, in many Native (American) cultural traditions (I am part from the Osage Nation and also Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma), across many different tribal nations, the traditional teachings are that we humans came (down to earth, literally by materializing or manifesting into physical form) from the Stars to here, and from the Pleiades in particular.

“The response is generally overwhelming, like ‘Wow, I’ve never heard anything like that.’ But I would have to disagree. They’re hearing it all the time, they’re just not trained to hear it. Some people just need time to adjust their brains in order to encompass what they’re hearing.”
    Wisdom.

"From the Central Asian republic of Tuvah".
    Well, not quite.
ONE of the types is, with it's specific sub-genres, but Throat Singing or Overtone Singing is also quite well known from say the Vikings, or the Ancient Zulu tribes, it was heard in Egypt, sung by some of the Nubian Tribes.
    Fun fact:
Nero, in Rome, you know, the Caesar, played bagpipe?
Not like the now-common ones, a primitive version, still.
Hmmm ... maybe contact Sir Morel, Steve, a phenomenal Khuur player, and do a collaborative song?
Hmmm ... maybe Amyran ... sung in both Sygyt (the whistling parts) and low-frequency Kargyraa for the song itself.
Oh yes, that seems a nice combination ... . :)
    This be sir Steve Morel:
    ua-cam.com/users/stevemorelchannelvideos
As you can hear, quite the player, he even played on Mongolian TV!
He can "khuur" anything, I bet.
Either way, your music is just ... magnificent!!!
    Thank you, sir ... .
    Ben
