The day I thanked ya for not splitting up the videos, you split up the videos... BUT that's ok cause you did it in a fine way, since the parts are still long and you uploaded them both the same day. That's totally ok. I was afraid it would be like 30 minute snippets per day, and that's just awful.
Even though I was never one of those assholes who kept calling you a noob, but you really... REALLY improved. Not only do you manage your engine power along with upgrading it, you also make very smart decisions, at least that's what I think. The game basically bullshitted you out of your win twice now. You rock, NL
While I agree with your comment, the previous loss was his fault. He had 120 unspent scrap that he could use to upgrade the "hp" of his systems even though he didn't have the power to power them. But the biggest mistake was rushing. He made the point to face the flagship before the base, so there was no reason to stick around that losing fight. As soon as his FTL drive was ready, he could've had jumped away and then reengage. I know he acknowledges this fact in this episode, but what I mean is that it's not about stiking to his guns on the final fight, but rather not realizing that the reason to rush the Flagship before it reaches the base is precisely so you can jump away and not loose the Base.
NL: You can mind control anyone at any time. That is to say, when the mantis invaded your ship at 42:40, you could've mind controlled one of them and made it muc harder for them to progress. This also means you can counter mind control with mind control, which is neat.
Whenever you get the "Intruders on board" encounter, you should get someone to man the door sub-system, that way it takes more time for them to pass through :)
Hey NL! During the fight at 32:00 you had a chance to shoot both the crew members in 1 room. If you kill the crew of a ship, you get an increased amount of scrap as a reward. That's why teleporters are so valuable. your halberd beam was the perfect opportunity to kill them both. Give it a try next time and see for yourself! :) Good luck!
Captains edition is neat but he should at least try to unlock more of the ships first. It takes a lot longer to upgrade stuff in that mod and the rebel fagship has been updated so it takes no shit even when your fully decked out.
Just showing my support for the split. These episodes are long and I watch them in one sitting but i feel you deserve the double ad revenue for this long video, People should support the split to support NL
NL, a good tip is that hitting the piloting system is actually more efficient than going for the engines. While both of them drop the evade chance to 0%, the piloting system often has less hp, so it would be easier to take down.
to enlighten you about the beams piercing shields: the beams will do: their dmg - bars of shields. for example: you have a 2dmg beam and they have 1 bar of shield you will do 2-1=1 dmg/room. knowing that, you should try to start your beam in their shieldroom. that might damage it enough to lower their shields by 1 bar, increasing your dmg in the other rooms.
NL the "Tough little ship" achievement is a lot easier to get than the others because if you have at least 80 scrap on the first sector and you let a ship get your hp down to one your set. Just make sure that you are next to a store first.
easier version. Find an asteroid field near a shop (like once you completed it you check if a shop is nearby) and shut down your shield and wait til you have 1 HP then boom go to the shop heal (well you need the scrap first but on easy it's easy) and boom achievement unlocked.
Ryan, a good strategy for grinding is in the early sector, always pay the mercenary to hold off the rebel ships. That was you can visit more locations. I find that 9/10 times the return is greater than the investment. Also, the earlier you do it, there is less risk in doing so because the enemies are weak.
'Baerly Legal 3 - Five shots on the chin' starring Jo 'Oaty Eye' Smith, Rosa Lee Smiles and Ryan 'Northern Stallion' LeTurnon! Now in adult theaters near you!
NL: In circumstances where you're invaded and are relatively safe, you might as well fight the intruders. Your crew members get tougher and you spend less time killing the intruders, too. Or if you really don't want to fight, you can move your extra crew member from sensors to doors. If you already have 3rd level doors, having a crew member in there gets you a 4th level!
I've been playing quite a bit of FTL myself, i did want to mention that I find mind controlling the pilot before shooting usually tanks the enemies dodge chance and makes that first all-important laser volley much more effective. :)
There should be a brig subsystem that allows you to lock up to 3 intruders up, which will cause an additional event to happen 1-10 jumps later (or whatever balances out best). The event would boil down to whether you trust the POW to become a member of your crew, or if you think they will sabotage you at a random time.
NL, it's VERY important to know that the SWARM MISSILE SHOOTS THREE MISSILES BUT COSTS ONE per shot, regardless of how many missiles are fired. Meaning shooting 3 missiles at once with the Swarm missile only costs one missile.
I recommend the "Ospery" The Artillery beam is a HUGE help in the Rebel Flagship as it hits them when they are cloaked. And goes through shields, it ALMOST got me a win the other day.
It doesn't hit them through cloak though, when they cloak it stops charging, so the only way to hit them is when they cloak slightly after you fire (but it can't miss so even then it hits them).
Kestrel being a shitty ship! In my opinion the Kestrel is one of the best. The Burst Laser Mark 2 is one of the best lasers. Especially early game because it can just shoot through (not literally) one layer of shields. In combo with the Artemis its even better. You can shoot the Artemis into the shields to take it down. After that shoot your laser into the weapons to deactivate it. The laser will pull of 2 damage (if it hits) as there is no shield. Also remember the Burst Laser Mark 2 and Artemis have a really low charge time!
Kestrel is not a bad ship at all. It's just not as good as other ships that are just even better. The artemis is not viable late game so you're forced to switch it out. Only 3 humans as a crew. No good systems to start with. No special defense capabilities. It just has a bad ass start thanks to burst laser M2, with artemis as back up.
One thing that I think it's useful sometimes is to try to make your crewmembers kill the invaders when they are dying. Most of the time is not really that worth, but the extra experience in combat might help when you can't use oxygen deprivation tactic.
Stop shooting their weapons if they can't even penetrate your shields! Damn, you make me angry, I don't know why I still watch your videos after all this time. We fucking love you dude.
MIndControlling their Pilot does not only drastically reduce the dodge chance, if they dont have an auto-pilot, it reduces it to 0. So that can be very effective to do in order to get a ton of lasers/missiles to land.
Considering how long this episode is, you might have realized by the end of it - but the hull laser does 2x damage on empty rooms. Early on, it would probably work the best to use burst laser on shields and then tear the enemy ship with the hull laser on an empty room.
Just a tip on the Hacking system, carefully think about the best option available. if you're in an asteroid belt for example, drain their shields, let the asteroids do the work while your weapons power up, if you're lucky, the asteroids will take down their shields/piloting/weapons so that they will die faster as a result. disabling drones was fair enough in this case aswell (40 minutes) because they opened you up to get damaged by asteroids aswell in that way.
NL, when you get boarded, out someone in the doors if it's available and safe. Manning it reinforces the doors, and helps out when dealing with boarders.
also NL, any time a system symbol is red, it is down completely. with some ships it's hard to tell whether or not weapons are active because they never stick out very far, but if weapons are red then they CANNOT shoot, that's always the case.
A teleporter is a good way to deal with the last boss... Considering the fact that the four weapon rooms are separate from the rest of the ship, you can take out the human manning it, then take out the missile launcher...Straight from Ohmwrecker
NL when you have intruders on board and they get into a manned roomed, put the guy in the door room, so you have lvl3 (lvl 2 in the early game) doors which take longer to take down
Just last night (and into this morning =P) I unlocked the Federation Cruiser's second layout. I did so using a lovely combination of the Vulcan, and a Burst Laser I & II all shooting at once. 'twas glorious. It is now my dream, however irrational, to get a ship set up with two Vulcans.
The Kestrel is one of the best ships, including the type B. I have no idea were you got that notion, but starting with a free Burst Lzr BK II is amazing
Hey NL. You may already know all this but II belive you get considerably more scrap if you manage to take over a ship by porting someone over and killing everybody in it, but you need to have a teleporter. Also try to mind control the guys in the forward weapon bays in the flagship to destroy those weapons since no-one else can get to them.
Manning the doors or sensors will always give you a bonus, even if you have fully upgraded them. Also, you should try out the cloning bay, I prefer it over the med bay
Hey NL, for future the Fire Bomb wreaks havoc against most foes, especially so on the Flagships main weaponry. First shot damages the gunner and burns the room, and the second shot kills the gunner and the fires destroy the weapon.
The Kestrel is actually a pretty solid rig, all things concidered. It's drawback is mostly three human crew, but that remedies itself by endgame. Personally I like it with cloaking and as many lasers I can get, and a fire/ion bomb.
Gabriel Rodriguez Menendez My success with the kestrel usually depends on if i can get an extra laser cannon or not. idk if im unlucky or what but i fail more often with it than other ships
Bust Laser II is one of the better lasers out there, and the Kestrel starts with it. You only need some shield bypass. A flak gun, heavy ion or even an ion bomb. I prefer cloaking and medbay over cloaning and drones. Take your pick regarding hacking or mind control, personally I like hacking a little better for third strike on the Flagship. I use boarding only with the Basilisk, but I guess it could work as well. Honestly, Kestrel is not bad is just... vanilla. Northernlion a good tactic to destroy the flagship is to get 2-4 strong units like rockmen or mantis and a crew teleporter, then send them to destroy the missles and importent bits :D
You should play on 3 laser weapons and 1 beam its so op against the flag ship if you shoot all 3 lasers at once since you mostly take down shields and deal a ton of dmg.
The kestrel isn't really bad, Burst Laser Mark II is one of the best weapons in terms of total damage output for power consumed. Nothing can stand up to a 4 Burst Laser Mark II assault, if you come across more of them, definitely pick them up
Is the default version easier than the advanced edition? I played my first game of this on easy and wiped the floor with the flagship. I could have just been incredibly lucky though.
I today unlocked 4 ships at once, because i got the rock ship for the mission, class B zoltan ship, lanius ship for amount of ships and mantis for winning with the zoltan cruiser. I really love it.
38:50 nl:"i doint relay need any of these systems" forgeting he only need one more to get the 2nt achevemnt geting closer to the kesterel type b. me: *facepulms*
Haven't yet beaten the flagship, but here are a few things I noticed NL: When the fight starts, pause and look through everything carefully. You started the fight with a spare power for engines. The flagship was blocking your sensors lvl 3 and 4 (crew member) - You should move the crew member into the Door System to have better doors for intruders in that situation. Crew teleporter... Crew teleporter... So many opportunities to buy a crew teleporter... *and along with mind control even!* Damn you NL, why you no listen? :(
I agree with you when you say the Mantis are not really a force to be reckoned with, but I HATE Rockmen. When things board my ship, I just suffocate them, but since the Rockmen have 150 health they take FOREVER, and their ships have the ability to negate damage (either system damage or hull damage, I forget :3).
Loving these FTL episodes. You split them NL if you want. Great vids to watch while playing Age of Wonders III..... Check out that game, I think you would like it! :)
Ryan, I know this sounds crazy, but you should really upgrade your medbay by one level early and leave it unpowered. It can save your crew SO many times...
"I really hate managing the health of our crew"
Remind me never to work for you
You should bring this series back!
Good news everyone, he brought it back!
The day I thanked ya for not splitting up the videos, you split up the videos... BUT that's ok cause you did it in a fine way, since the parts are still long and you uploaded them both the same day. That's totally ok. I was afraid it would be like 30 minute snippets per day, and that's just awful.
I died inside when he chose not to buy the burst laser mk 2. Such a strong energy to damage ratio weapon.
Even though I was never one of those assholes who kept calling you a noob, but you really... REALLY improved. Still loving the revived FTL series, Ryan. Good idea splitting the videos into 2 parts. Keep it up!
I saw TB playing the captains mod earlier, it adds loads of stuff you might want to check it out sometime. Love the series btw keep it up :)

I commend you for uploading both parts in one day. Hopefully the returns on the videos keep it a viable option! I love this series.
Drinking game idea: take a shot every time Ryan says "floor" while playing FTL.
Just showing my support for the split. These episodes are long and I watch them in one sitting but i feel you deserve the double ad revenue for this long video, People should support the split to support NL
mistake selling the ion bomb IMO. its one of the few effective, reliable ways of reducing the shields of the final boss.
nl please bring this series back

Really? I've had it charge and hit them while cloaked... Strange. Might of fired RIGHT as they cloaked then... But still I would recommend that ship.
Or the Crystal ship as it's weapons pierce 1 layer of shield, but of course it's challenging to get.
Melvin Plays
Rock B also has a piercing weapon (and rock C for that matter)
Kestrel being a shitty ship! In my opinion the Kestrel is one of the best. The Burst Laser Mark 2 is one of the best lasers. Word of advice: When you're trying to asphyxiate an invader, send someone into the door control to keep them locked in.
This works for keeping fires from spreading too
NL is all about micromanagement now... Gets boarded, doesn't move the Sensor crew to Doors...
MIndControlling their Pilot does not only drastically reduce the dodge chance, if they dont have an auto-pilot, it reduces it to 0. So that can be very effective to do in order to get a ton of lasers/missiles to land.

his constant need to keep the medbay active makes me cry inside all the time -_-;
I jumped the gun a little there, but he does leave it on way too long, especially in previous episodes
***** in his last series i dont think he depowered it once, instead depowering his engines when he needed energy
I love this series Northernlion Thank you :)
NL when you have intruders on board and they get into a manned roomed, put the guy in the door room, so you have lvl3 (lvl 2 in the early game) doors which take longer to take down

Manning the doors or sensors will always give you a bonus, even if you have fully upgraded them. Also, you should try out the cloning bay, I prefer it over the med bay
HE PASSED THE GIANT SPIDERS??? WHAT IS THIS SORCERY?!
Funny how I know who BaerTaffy is. I chuckled when you named a crew member after him.
Hey NL, for future the Fire Bomb wreaks havoc against most foes, especially so on the Flagships main weaponry. First shot damages the gunner and burns the room, and the second shot kills the gunner and the fires destroy the weapon.
If I manage to nab the Fire Bomb, buying a teleporter and recruiting some Rockmen becomes priority. Pretty much a guaranteed win.
Just starting the video. Excited to see it's a two parter! Disappointed to see the Kestrel. =T
Never the less holding out for you NL! Ganbatte!
NL inspired me to beat this game with the kestrel :) double burst lasers, artemis, and heavy ion wrecked that flagship!
Honestly, Kestrel is not bad is just... vanilla.
I maybe a little byassed, I unlocked the Engi A and the Stealth and Federation A, but my first win was on my trusty old Kestrel A, the same run I got the achievement for having a six species crew, it really felt like the Federation came together for the victory.
I won't argue it's top tier or anything like that, but it's a very solid machine that with just a little fine tunning can match the Flagship.
In my humble opinion, anyways.
Weapon pre-igniter is basically the Brimstone of FTL
Northernlion a good tactic to destroy the flagship is to get 2-4 strong units like rockmen or mantis and a crew teleporter, then send them to destroy the missles and importent bits :D
I hope this is a winning run!
the first guys you get automatically go back to the first spot they were in by pressing the return to the saved spot. if that makes any sense?
The swarm missile replicates missiles, so shooting it at full charge only costs 1 missile, not 3
You should play on 3 laser weapons and 1 beam its so op against the flag ship if you shoot all 3 lasers at once since you mostly take down shields and deal a ton of dmg.
When you have intruder on board and you run with your crew you might aswell run them to door room so it takes them longer to get through them.
27:50 they didn't want to get away, they just wanted to surrender...
The kestrel isn't really bad, Burst Laser Mark II is one of the best weapons in terms of total damage output for power consumed. Nothing can stand up to a 4 Burst Laser Mark II assault, if you come across more of them, definitely pick them up
If you find an asteroid belt and a store that you can clear a path to, you can just clear the path, use the belt to hurt yourself, then go repair.
thats exactly what i did
i just looked around for a ship which had a missle and a lasor let him pummel me and then jumped to a shop but yeah astroids work too
6:04 been playing Isaac NL?
Is the default version easier than the advanced edition? I played my first game of this on easy and wiped the floor with the flagship. I could have just been incredibly lucky though.
I today unlocked 4 ships at once, because i got the rock ship for the mission, class B zoltan ship, lanius ship for amount of ships and mantis for winning with the zoltan cruiser. I really love it.
Also you just made me interested in unlocking the class B kestrel, ill go for it really soon.
Really need to start prioritizing the three missle launcher. If you hack it instead of shields you save yourself a ton of damage
NL, ideally you'd want breaches in all of your unmanned rooms.
How are federation ships not Relationship: Ally?
38:50 nl:"i doint relay need any of these systems" forgeting he only need one more to get the 2nt achevemnt geting closer to the kesterel type b.

Keep up the good work!
ion bomb is one of the best weapons in the game. it didn't matter this run because you already had a great setup
34:11 nl:go big or go home

swarm missile is really good
Try and install captain edition. Brings new events, weapons, ships and a lot more! That will be awesome!
He hasn't even shown off the standard things yet though, I think he wants to show off the advanced edition content before anything else, he would have to have a different series for mods like in crusader kings if he did that.
I my opinion...One of the best ships is the fedaration one...That free, shield piercing beam just destroys everything....
NL you skipped over the reverse Ion Field! That shit is useful!
And 9 laser shots is also insanely good.
"5 Shots on the Chin" LOL
Crew teleporter... Crew teleporter... So many opportunities to buy a crew teleporter... *and along with mind control even!* Damn you NL, why you no listen? :(
the repair from one health is easy if you sit in an asteroid field
You should play prison architect
I agree with you when you say the Mantis are not really a force to be reckoned with, but I HATE Rockmen. When things board my ship, I just suffocate them, but since the Rockmen have 150 health they take FOREVER, and their ships have the ability to negate damage (either system damage or hull damage, I forget :3).
Dont know if you know but you get more options if you kill the enemy crew insted of the whole ship.
Loving these FTL episodes. You split them NL if you want. Great vids to watch while playing Age of Wonders III..... Check out that game, I think you would like it! :)
If he bought the teleporter when he had the chance he would have gotten the Full arsenal achievement very easily.
