I am 10 days post op and probably watched every UA-cam there is in Knee Replacement rehabilitation advice. Yours is one of the best! So clear and it all makes sense. I would recommend your ideas, routines, advice to anybody considering knee replacement surgery. Thank You!
I was in a boat fishing three weeks after total knee replacement surgery. It hurt like crazy for an hour but the longer I had my knee bent at a 90 degree angle the better it felt. But I had more mobility in my knee than any of my three therapists had ever seen right away. The day after surgery my therapist couldn’t believe how much mobility I had already. I worked it hard from the time I got back to my room after surgery.
Gee I do believe I was asleep. Wish I'd got it tho because they didn't offer at the rehab I was at. So I found one n left there. Unbelievable it was a 5 star but they dud very little on me n I complained n complained ! Got a little but really. I left.

Hi, I just wanted to thank you for your videos they have been very helpful to me. I am now at five weeks after my total knee replacement. I’m doing well but lots of ups and downs. Your videos help me through the tough spots. Thanks for caring and putting out such good information. Happy new year, Eric!

Hello Sir, I am 14 weeks Post-Op. I will say PT was the best I have experienced. I do my exercises everyday. I am back to doing my housework. I do experience some stiffness but, I do work through it. I do take breaks as needed. Then I continue my activities. I am not in pain but, experience some ache at times. I apply ice & then it becomes much better. Eating properly does help. Positive, Mental Attitude helps a great deal. Thank you for sharing this video. 😊😊
Great tips, keeping a diary of progress really helps. I would add another tip and that is to rest during the day, recovery is a very tiring business I find. Thank you Luke 🙂

Yes this is particularly common early on after surgery for a variety of reasons including pain, pain medicine, and your body clearing the anesthesia post-op
I am a young 63 year old guy and prior to having my full right knee replacement 10 days ago spent 5 days a week at the gym. Recovery is going ok, tough but ok. I’m walking around the house without sticks, able to walk upstairs without sticks, but not down yet. Im the most impatient person on the planet and I’m itching to get back into the gym, is it too early? Area I am struggling with is ROM and it’s frustrating the hell out of me. Here is a playlist all related to managing sleep you can check out: ua-cam.com/play/PLmjdDYgvJ_hXs1zOpwlVGMI_gD0II3n-f.html In terms of playing golf, I don't think you are going to excessively damage the knee. Although it may lead to symptoms this doesn't mean the arthritis in the knee is getting worse or that the surgery will be any different. Your main consideration should be your symptoms during and after playing golf... Low to moderate symptoms are probably manageable and okay, but if your symptoms are significant enough to cause a flare-up that lasts multiple days, you may want to back off some... shorter rounds? 1x per week? will have to determine what works for you.
@@KneeReplacementTherapists Thanks for the suggestions. One other thing. I did receive a cortisone shot in my knee about 3 weeks ago. I understand that they suggest waiting 4 to 6 months after a cortisone shot to have the surgery . Is this correct?
@@dennisandre4839 Yes, typically surgeons will want you to wait a number of months after having a cortisone injection before having knee replacement surgery.
Protein intake is important before and after surgery for many reasons. However, I thin incorporating plant-based foods (fruits and vegetables) provides you with lots of nutrients including many important for tissue healing and that have anti-inflammatory benefits. So, I personally recommend incorporating these foods, but am by no means an expert when it comes to nutrition. Thanks for the good question!
Unfortunately this is not uncommon. Each one will progress along somewhat different timelines, but the first few weeks are the worst and things slowly get better day by day.
@@charlesevans9916, I hope that your surgeon prescribed you something. If not I would call. Knee Replacement Therapists are right when they say it takes time. I'm now 7 weeks out , still on pain meds (which I hate), but with physical therapy and Lazer therapy I'm alot better than what I was. It's still painful, especially during PT but not like it was. Walking helps me alot. Now I'm just praying that I won't need surgery on the other knee as it's painful. I have to take a break from the pain. Just know and believe that one day this will all be worth it.
I subscribed to your channel recently right after watching one of your videos. My knees are very bad and it looks like total knee replacement is a must. I won’t lie when I tell you I am scared. I’m afraid of the pain afterwards and my expectations afterward. I know many people have this done and everyone is different. On average, what % better can you expect your knee to be providing you are doing exercises regularly?
Great question! I think I would say for many individuals after about 6 months or more after surgery they would say their knees are 80-90% completely better... this mean a lot better mobility, range of motion, ability to tolerate activities, decreased pain and symptoms... however you can still have some lingering symptoms of pain, stiffness, swelling although for most people far less than before surgery. I will say though that some studies have shown about 20% or 1/5 individuals aren't fully satisfied with their knee replacement, and this is for a variety of reasons... but then that also means 80% do have great outcomes from surgery...hope this helps.
Do you recommend a core group of exercises patients do 2 to 3 times a day every day? Do you vary the exercises from one day to the next? I think one can try to do too much or too many exercises, and we can reach the law of diminishing returns. It's key to find that balance so we work smarter, not just harder. I walk about 30 minutes one to two times a day, every day, and it seems to help when my knee/leg are stiff.
Great question! So usually I'll provide people with maybe 5-6 main exercises to focus on outside of PT and change / adjust these as the rehab progresses. In the PT session then I try to add a little more variability and progression.. I absolutely agree with your comment about doing too much. Really if you are doing a handful of exercises a few times a day you'll be okay. I'll also notice a diminishing adherence to an exercise program if you load someone up too much, especially if they weren't big exercisers before surgery. Also, walking is a great, simple exercise and I always stress consistency is the key!
Having a left knee replacement on 3 October 2023 and plan to go on a course (lots of sitting) for work on 23 October. Do you think that is feasible. I’m 55 and healthy.
At 3 weeks you probably will still have a lot of pain, stiffness, discomfort. If it’s mostly sitting you probably can struggle through it but it may be a lot to get through
Continue to focus on your therapy exercises for stretching, range of motion. These exercises will improve the mobility in the knee and this will carryover to walking. Also focus on strengthening exercises that will help mobility. Lastly continue to do some walking every day even if you have pain, with practice and repetitions your tolerance and gait pattern will improve. Give it time and understand you are still relatively early in your recovery, it can take up to 6 months or longer
HELP! My mom had a hip replacement January last year and her knee replacement about 5 months ago but has been on the walker heavy still. I personally don’t think her physical therapy is challenging enough but she swears they do a excellent job. When I say she DRAGS the walker I mean it’s like she’s putting all her weight depending on it. She cannot even go to the bathroom across the hall without it. She’s almost 6months post surgery am I being harsh to say her progress should be more progressed?
Every person will progress differently, a lot of it depends on her physical and functional status prior to surgery. It is good to push and motivate in a positive manner but be sure she is also getting time to rest and recover and is also remaining safe. It is a balancing act. If you have concerns I recommend asking your mom if you can attend a therapy session and both of you have a conversation with the therapist to discuss her progress. Hope this helps!
Hi just had a tnr revision,, tired was in Aug 2015 now February 2023 ,IfI d this surgery is much more painful and I m not able to do as much as in 2015,,what could be the reason.. thank you
A revision surgery is more complicated and more intensive compared to a regular knee replacement… your surgeon has to remove the original knee replacement and use the bone you have remaining, and there is typically some additional components to stabilize the new replacement.. also you are 8 years older and may not be as physically fit and healthy as you were for the first surgery so the recovery may take longer and be more difficult… but the vast majority of times folks who undergo revision surgery make a significant recovery and see improvements in symptoms and mobility.
Bending the knee is my challenge. It’s a month now and the last time it was measured a few days ago, it was 88 degrees, not even 90. Now my doctor has prescribed steroids and OxyContin before therapy itself. I am hoping this will help me tolerate therapy.
Hopefully the pain medicine will help! Continue to be consistent with your therapy and exercises. Even if the number may not be improving as fast as you wish you are still probably making progress and will hopefully notice the payoff soon.
I'm going on almost 5 months post surgery but I still don't have so much recovery Not possible to stand more than 1 hour not possible to step up and down in the proper way plz suggest
I’m sorry to hear that your recovery has been challenging. It might be helpful to focus on gentle strengthening and mobility exercises that your doctor or physical therapist recommends. They can provide tailored guidance to ensure you're progressing safely. Also, consider incorporating rest periods when standing or doing activities to avoid overexertion. Keep communicating with your healthcare team-they’re there to support you through this.

Continue to trust the process and be consistent with performing stretches and exercises 1-2 times a day. @KneeReplacementTherapists thank you for your suggestions. I will look into water exercises. I'd love a good massage. At therapy I fo go on the bike, I mutable to do a full circle, just pushing forward as much as I can, and backwards, as much as I can tolerate.
This is not uncommon… often more of an annoyance than anything else. Sometimes this decreases over time but for some it can linger for a long time if not forever
both of these supplements can increase bleeding risk and this is why many surgeons will have you stop taking typically a few weeks before and after surgery.
Wish doc gave me stronger drugs. To endure this. Vicodin didn't work at all, but since stronger drugs were over perscribed no one can get what works. This is why we cant have nice things. Im stuck with Tylenol and ice 5 days in but pain is very limiting. Everyone says it'll improve but enduring this pain with otc drugs bs.

both of these supplements can increase bleeding risk and this is why many surgeons will have you stop taking typically a few weeks before and after surgery.
Thank you…..knee surgery tomorrow 20 Sept.2024
Best wishes to you with your surgery and the recovery after. You got this!

I am not much on meat…,
That’s okay! There are many non-animal sources of protein. Try to eat a variety of foods such as nuts, seeds, tofu, beans, lentils and more.
Lots of fruits 🙄
🙃
Plant based, nightshade free, and alkaline foods are the best for arthritis and any inflammation issue in joints. Vegan plant based diet, is the best.
I definitely agree that a plant-based diet has tremendous benefits for managing a variety of health conditions
Sorry to hear you are dealing with a lot of pain. Hang in there and stay the course, you will start to hopefully see the payoff soon.
@KneeReplacementTherapists yes I am progressing well, advil, maybe once a day. Hope it continues . at 135 on go knee ometer. Thanks for the motovation

How did it go?
@@XLDJWHAT Outpatient surgery. First two days were awful, but I was expecting that. Pain gone after about 10 days. Swelling and sleep are the two biggest challenges.
@@btipton6899 that’s good to hear. I’m scheduled for my tkr on May17.
@@XLDJWHAT best of luck!
Thank you for the tips.
No problem!
