Another scam is all the gum all over the streets & sidewalks....IT'S NOT FRESH!!!
They've already been chewed on. So if you want fresh unchewed gum, purchase it at the store in an unopened pack.
LMAO absolutely! hahaha
LMAO...
No way. That’s good gum you’re passing up.
Lol reminds me of elf
learned that the hard way...
People running around airports saying “Uber Uber” sometimes I just want to scream at people getting them. “THATS NOT HOW UBER WORKS”
lmao and the old people will believe them because they usually dont know how uber works
Ella Wants to Be famous Lol
Ella Wants to Be famous Should he hold a sign?? Lol
I wouldn't be surprised if some of them are sex traffickers...smh
Those people yelling Uber are Boomers
I bought a CD player many years ago in Chicago. I went for a coffee straight after just a few shops away from the electronic store. I decided that as I'd had it gift wrapped I'd better check it. I don't know why I opened it but I wanted to maybe use it on the plane journey home and needed to see if it had batteries in it. I decided that I would re-wrap it in the UK. Good job I did. There was no CD player but lots of plugs and wires etc to give it weight. I burst into tears as it was a present for my boyfriend. It was also quite expensive as CD players were newly out. The lady in the coffee shop asked what was wrong. I showed her. She rolled on her sleeves up and went back to the shop with me. She went bananas at the assistant, threw the wires etc at the assistant and demanded my money back. She got it back for me and then slapped the shop assistant. Took my arm and we went back to her coffee shop and she didn't charge me a penny. I gave her a $10 tip and a hug. I don't let anyone gift wrap anything nowadays. Be warned.
" I burst into tears as it was a present for my boyfriend. " Then you burst into tears when the "boyfriend" walked out on you. Big deal.
Wow. That's so great that woman was there to help. And thanks for the advice!
@@alphonsozorro7952 What's your problem? The point was to warn people not for you to make nasty comments about something you know SFA about. Can you even read?
Alphonso Zorro Don’t come onto UA-cam if you’re just gonna be negative. No one needs your rudeness when the person was telling an informational story so that people are warned, I hope you lose money one day to a scammer and tell your story only to get rude hate comments.
@KoivuTheHab I was on holiday. If the lady hadn't sorted the problem I would have called the police. The point was to be careful about gift wrapping unless you watch them do it. Not about how assertive I am.
Scamming is the world’s second oldest profession.
@KoivuTheHab 😂😹😂😹
@TruthSeeker read S L O W L Y......
If you go all biblical then it is the oldest profession, what was the snake in the garden of Eden but a con artist who smooth talked Eve.
Nooses would discourage taking it as a "profession"
@@harrybetteridge7532 Technically Adam had work before the fall. We were made to work, it’s not a product of the fall.
Wow, great list! I would also like to add:
1) The broken “glass”/broken bottle scam - Someone bumps into you and then drops broken glass on the ground. They then demand money from you because you broke their item. Refuse, walk away, and call the police.
2) The Empire State Building ticket sellers on the street - In addition to a ticket to the observatory, these ticket sellers sell you tickets to the New York Skyride, which is an overpriced 3D adventure in a flying car with clips from the 90s.
3) Statue of Liberty ticket sellers - Regarding your Staten Island Ferry segment, it is very similar in that they sell you an overpriced ride on a boat which doesn’t even visit the Statue of Liberty. The only official vendor is Statue Cruises, and the tickets may be purchased online or in Castle Clinton.
3) High school/young adult basketball/football, etc. sports teams donations to buy sneakers, clothing, etc. - most of the time they’ll just take your money.
4) NYC Subway scalpers - Usually happens In stations where there is no attendant. The MetroCard machines will be broken (possibly by them) so you can’t buy a subway fare, and then they will sell you a swipe to get in.
5) Card skimmers - Make sure to check ATMs, subway MetroCard machines and the like for skimming devices which will steal your card info.
Wow great advice! Maybe I'll have to make a part 3! lol How would you know when a card skimming device is on the machine?
Sarah Funk Yeah you definitely should make a part 3! There will always be scams we’re discovering or new people think up. I’ve personally never encountered a skimming machine but I try to look into the card slot for anything that looks weird, and shake/pull the card slot to see if anything jiggles out.
actionkid105 I love your videos!!!!!
I live in nyc :/

Golden Rule in NYC: KEEP MOVING!!
True!
Why? Is there a reason for that? I've only been there once with an 'organized trip' kind of thing but I plan on going by myself this summer. First time I wasn't that scared but maybe thats because we had a guide.
Jessica Hamelin usually in the city everyone is busy. someone would get annoyed with a regular local for stopping; it’s the norm here but in the summer i’m sure that lessens.
dianelly ohhh okay thanks. I was good then. Always moving and never stopped for nothing!
Alejandro Fallas I love it.. Keep ,Keepin On.
The real scam are the "real" designer bags, the fakes are a minor issue.

Watches like Rolex are a scam.
And you are forced to buy them????
If you’re stupid enough to think they’re not fakes you deserve to get taken.
Never be sorry for exposing scams.
It's illegal to beg ON THE SUBWAYS. Not on the streets. Just so people don't confuse that.
Good point. Thank you for clarifying!
It's called panhandling..
@@FreeHugs72 It's also called begging. But thanks for playing.

I've lived right outside of New York my whole life so I go into the city all the time and I've never even thought about this stuff.. I've never even thought to go in those stores and whenever someone tries to talk to me on the street I just keep walking 😅 Also, if you're on the subway or on the street and a crackhead comes up to you and says something crazy or tries to instigate, DO NOT say anything back! DO NOT start a fight! They are crazy! Just ignore them and keep it moving! It drives me up the wall when I see people interacting and fighting with these crazy people. They might insult you, scream at you, get in your face, etc. Ignore them and move away. Do not engage.

I' M SCREAMING! The guy in the electronics store was the guy who scammed me about a month ago when i went on vacations in New York.
I bought a SIM-CARD at his store and he said it was like 20 US for the sim card with 8 GB of data.. Then he activated the sim card and gave the phone back to me and he charged me about 70 USD. He's answer when i asked him about it was that the sim card was 20 US, the data plan was 30 US and the rest was I think tax,
I don't speak english quiet well so i got tricked... very sad.
If u could just let people know where can they report this scams it would be great.
Thanks for the video.

Omg you made me feel so saaaad :(
Mauricio Estrada 20 dollars! That’s obviously a scam
Mauricio Estrada that sucks! I think your English is pretty good by the way 😊
Basically, if a stranger bugs you, it’s an attempted scam. Just walk away, no matter how rude it may seem. You’re doing the right thing.
Who didn’t know Canal street is to go buy fakes? It’s why it’s there
Someone not from NY like maybe ME!
yup.
Answer: people who specificaly come there from another state and city to shop there because of the prices. The first time we ran across those stores was by accident while perusing through Chinatown. Hell, up until a few weeks ago I didn't know there were other Chinatowns in NY and the first time I was in NYC was years ago.
Lmao 😹 right!
the whole city is a scam
Jeff Marquis no you’re overreacting
Trump grew up there, and you have to marvel at why these scams are so prevalent in New York, and why it hustles rubes from around the world in the millions.
Just as the Trump family and associated employees and partners used deception, combined with those poison ivy type universities and academies Graduates of oblivion. Pimping out of the trust fund minions.
Into political, High finance, Law, to conserve the policies of hustling rubes till the end of civilization.

Yes baby
Agreed as most of our cities are.😉
Jeff Marquis no it a hassle . Some are good and other just plan wrong .
Don't take the Staten Island ferry? We went in the middle of the holiday season, in the middle of the day. It wasn't busy at all (the boats are enormous) and it was a lovely trip with a fab FREE view of the Statue of Liberty. Can't imagine why anyone would pay for that.
I always hear people, recommend taking The SI Ferry for views of Lady Liberty.
Jessica James I live in Staten Island and I can tell tell you to take the Staten Island ferry because it’s free and you can get a clear view of the Statue of Liberty ,and Staten Island is very safe .
Shes saying don't buy fake tickets to the ferry outside because the ferry is free, sure isn't saying not to take the ferry at all.
I often advise tourists to take the Ferry. The cruises are way too expensive for what they are worth and going to Liberty Island, while nice, is a big time and money suck and unless you have lots of both, probably not worth it. But I have to admit the first time I took the Staten Island Ferry, I was disappointed to find out they make you get off the boat in Staten Island before you can turn around. I was hoping to just stay on board. I had lived in NYC my whole life up to that point (I was about 20 at the time) and hadn't gone to Staten Island yet. I had no desire to start then.
@@Sam_on_UA-cam Approximately how long is the ride to SI? I am also curious how close the Brooklyn bridge is to lady liberty if anyone knows.
As a seasoned NY'er I will say you are spot on. Love your videos. Love my city. NY, there's a sucker born every minute.
Wow and to believe people look upto NEW YORK CITY
And a scammer born every 30 seconds.
Donna Corrado ..Yep, I'm not one anymore..I hope not.. Lol
Not all homeless people in NY are drug addicts.
Health care, social security, etc, it looks like it all sucks over there?
I myself would gladly advise to move away from there, however, migration laws might get in the way.,.
True, if they're not drug addicts, they have a story on why they need some money.
Exactly! Wtf
correct.. some are alcoholics
Yeah, sure, not ALL, just more than 90%
But being scammed is part of the NYC experience! Haha!
"It's like catching a foul ball at a baseball game!"
"No Yogi, it's like getting your _food stolen_ at a baseball game."
Getting speedy awesome health care when getting to a hospital, while actual people from the USA first get a background check and possibly even refused, is the full experience, public health care in Belgium is much better.,. ( Doctors even need to swear an oath, to always think of the patient's health first )
Maybe for you it is smh

Screw New York!
The Times Square "Disney" characters are a scam also. I fell for it last fall, Had 4 people dressed up as Mickey and Minnie and asked me for a picture so I did. Then after they took a pic with me they asked me for money. I handed one of the Minnie's $5 and she said "how about $20"?. I was shocked. I left and they only got $5 from me lol.
E.J. O'Rourke saw a parent tap his pocket and say I don’t carry cash 😂
Now they charge you $10 each! Got scammed by Batman and Minnie.
batman received € coins since there was no other money at hand :D
I gave $1 and only to the character I asked. I’m not paying $5/$10 for a pic with a crappy costume. Just say no & jeep waking they can’t make you pay.
E.J. O'Rourke the costumes are so bad why would you take pictures with them😭😭
Bumped into you while you were filming this....was weird because we literally watched your ‘how to get to Manhattan from the airports in New York’ clip earlier that day (btw that clip is spot on and we got to Manhattan in no time). Thanks Sarah🙌🏽

I was once showing some tourist friends around and just as I finished telling them how you never run into people you know walking around New York City, who should come down the escalator at Grand Central but the only close friend we all shared who wasn't with us at the time. He was surprised.
The staten island ferry scam is very annoying! Thanks for including it, because I have seen many people fall victim to it!

Scam in NYC: push down a cheap glass vase so that it crashes to the floor and shatters when a customer enters a store. I am CERTAIN that I did not come anywhere near that vase! And the shop owner gave me a price of $5.95 for that broken vase immediately! ... I left the shop. I did NOT break that vase, I didn't even touch it.

Just watched this video. Some great advice for newbies to NYC. We almost fell for the fake taxi scam when we arrived at JFK on our first visit to NY last year. A guy flagged us as we left the terminal and had a yellow cab notepad, so we thought he was genuine until he led us to a black SUV in the parking lot. Thats when we made our excuses and left, heading back to the cab stand.

I’m a bike messenger and a couple of times I’ve had middle eastern drivers approach me while I’m biking and say they don’t have cash or a wallet and want to sell me “real gold” rings and watches for cheap so they can buy gas. I almost fell for it the first time

Don't buy baby milk for a beggar. They ask for it specifically because it pulls at your heart strings and if you go buy that item with them you feel like you're helping. But they take the milk and sell it for more later.

Those cheap electronic stores scammed me when I first came to the US as a tourist. Happened exactly as you described. I felt so stupid when I went online and saw the true price of the junk I had paid for. I can see these scammers from a mile away now. Excellent presentation.
I live in nyc and yea most of everything is a scam like idk why Times Square is so popular it’s boring but flashy that’s about it, maybe because go to school in this area I’m not impressed by it.

You think Times Square is funky now??? You shoulda seen it in the 1970's. I worked on 44th and 5th ave. Peep Shows, Porn Palaces, Smut shops and hookers all between 6th ave and 8th ave. True homeless people who have dignity and are trying their best to not stay homeless don't hang out on the Subway passing around a hat for money.

You need to be careful in NYC, but really you need to be careful everywhere. Thanks for sharing this! ❤️❤️
A genuinely frightening Subway beggar was on my sister's car a few weeks ago. She had a child and was talking about how they needed money- the usual. My sister didn't think much of it until she heard another passenger say to his friend, "she has a different kid every time." It really freaked my sister out. Also, many beggars are actually homeless, but if you don't want to fund any potential drug habit, you should give them some food if you happen to have any to spare. A good trick for figuring out how much they need help is if they ask for money OR food, not just money.
We went to Washington DC last year, and the monks were there too selling beads. One of them grabbed my wrist and just put prayer beads on my wrist real quick.
You were lucky, monks in nyc usually grab your wrist to take away your watch XD
Very helpful... thanks 💋
Helpful video Sarah 👍😉🇺🇲
Thank you lovely lady. I'm from London and we have pleanty of scams going on over here too but maybe not quite as many as NYC. I haven't yet heard of fake monks, the last time of 5 that I was in the Big A was 97 and there was a bit going on there too but I guess now it's gotten worse
There's a couple monks in Philly too in populated places.
All those people going to Staten Island owe me $1 because I bought Staten Island from a guy on the street for $175 back in 94. Maybe I should have gotten some paperwork with that. lol
*shenanigans
Great video! Thank you Sarah.
Thank you!
I'm going for the first time to NY on October and thanks to your videos I'll be more prepared and hopefully everything goes well... Thanks you!!
#1 scam of NYC:
Rent
Born and raised in NYC, 31 years old. I've never been on the Staten Island Ferry nor in the Statue of Liberty.
I saw the 1982 July 4 fireworks show in the Harbor from the Ferry that had moved right in front of it. Great free experience.
node ok?
Sara - Great videos - Incredible Quality - Would you mind sharing what kind of camera/lenses are you using ? lighting / mic ?
I appreciate your videos they are direct simple and to the point and totally accurate.
Thank you!
This was totally entertaining although I do feel bad for people who fall for these. I'm not technically a local but grew up in CT and spent most weekends in NYC so was raised to know the basics.
However, my brother did once give money to a begger on the subway. It was only like $30 and he never does that kind of thing (if anything, he's the least generous of us all) but he also gave the man his business card. Two weeks later, he got a call from the man telling him that he had got a job and was turning his life around. They're not all addicts. Sometimes people surprise you.
We went into a phone store near mid town to buy a sim for $60 when we got back to the hotel found that they had also charged us $760 on our card which they insisted we use. Went straight back and they said it would be refunded. It never was by them had to go through our bank. We go to New York every year and will only buy a sim from T-Mobile with cash! from then on.
$760!?!😧 Yo, I would murder someone if I got scammed like that!🔫😡
@@SegaDisneyUniverse murder someone for $760? Obviously ur broke. 😆😆
@@megadeth1640 Okay but even if I were a millionaire, I'd still murder them with my 24K Gold pocket knife, lol.😉
@@SegaDisneyUniverse 👍
I don't have all my money on the account connected to the debit card!
It is absolutely possible that having $760 less on it than I thought I had could make me unable to pay for something important, especially if I had made a few big purchases that month.
This is such an informative video! I wish I had seen this sooner before my grandmother went out of her way to buy the latest go pro at a shop in Times Square, it ended up being fake and in Spanish... *sigh.
Thanks for the information 👍
Had to pull a friend away from a fake monk in Central Park when they were visiting us. He was trying to sell him some prayer bracelet....
Good job saving your friend!
What, you mean this prayer ring I bought that helped me win the Powerball was fake?
To be fair all prayer bracelets are fake, unless they were personally carved by Jesus and blessed by Buddha XD
Also, there are these black people who sell mixtapes & if you don't buy them then they say "Oh so you don't like black people" and make you feel bad
Very specific experience
@@sadisticpyro2330 Indeed
That happened to me last week when I went to visit NYC. And then later that night I heard them say the same damm thing to someone else about not liking Black people and that they are the nice black people. Plus I heard they get aggressive if you don't donate enough money to them and those C.D's are blank. I mean who uses CDs nowadays?? 😂😂
@@cali4920 exactly...
Sarah, you should come to Atlanta to get scammed. We're famous for the "Lie, Cry, Run to Daddy Scam". It works like this, you go to a Panera Bread and some hick starts looking at you. He talks to his hayseed girlfriend about you. He's as insulting as hell. You walk over to him, punch him in the nose & the next thing you know, his Daisy Mae has videotaped the fist fight on her phone. You get arrested, end up in jail, go to court & get fleeced. If you are unlucky enough to go to jail, you are extorted in jail. That's the real Atlanta I know.
thank you for the great information
I'll just stay in Scotland
Love your enthusiasm. I'm a born New Yorker and sometimes we get a bad rap. You do us proud Sarah!
Awesome video. The way you talk is exactly like Brother’s Green Eats and you’re both from NY I believe :)
Nice video. You need to do one of your videos on the history of Madison Square Garden. That place has a great story behind it.
