Bought my Kestrel after your review video and this one. Intending on the tent lashed to the outside and bookmarked a few of your other items. Many thanks for the video
Interesting and well shot video. I’m going bike packing in the Lakes soon and look to be about 10kg on the bike including water so am enjoying watching other people’s kit lists!
I also have the Osprey Kestral 48. I haven't been able to use it yet due to schedule, but have been practice packing. I am at about 10 Kg (22 lbs) with water and food. I sometimes wish the pack was lighter, but I love Osprey products and their durability.
Hi, I'm brand new to hiking, backpacking --- I've watched a bunch of your videos and videos from other hikers I've been looking, shopping for a backpack for a couple of weeks --- REI, Osprey, Gregory, Granite Gear and so on -- weighing the pros and cons (capacity, weight, price so on) yesterday I got an email from EMS (Eastern Mountain Sports -- a chain of stores in the USA) -- I looked through it and saw the Osprey Stratos 50 was on sale sale price = $119.98 regular price = $189.95 --- I bought it with no hesitation (and without ever having tried one on LOL) now I'm just waiting for it to arrive and hoping it fits me, and fits all the gear I plan on buying, and is as comfortable as all the reviews say it is its either going to be a great deal or a horrible waste of money HA HA now I have to get the 2021 3F UL Gear Lanshan 2 Pro Tent you reviewed a month ago -- its definitely small enough to fit in or on the pack and seems like a really great tent
Mine usually weighs 15kg inc food and drink with a ‘standard’ tent. It’s nice to pack light in the summer, especially if it’s hot. The Lanshan 2 Pro is a great summer tent!
You did well. My issue is that I’m very tall and there is literally nothing lightweight that fits me - eg my custom made quilt as a result of being longer is 1.5kg. My ZPacks Dyneema Triplex (circa 700gm) which cost a mint with the import duty is just not big enough so I’ve reverted to my trusty Crux Assault which all in weighs 2.2kg. Same for clothing - it’s bigger so it’s heavier. 😂. I’ve managed to get my base weight (no food / water but includes stove and fuel) down to just under 13kg. I can only imagine what 8kg must be like.
Great review, and you convinced me that this is probably the one for me. But... Can you do weight and compression with water filled (OK, wine too), food for 1-2 nights in a bear box (required where I am), first aid/medicine, In Reach or whatever, and snacks? A complete list for 2 nights. I am sure it would all fit, but I might be concerned with both density and access once you complete the pack. My gear is very similar to yours, except that I require Aeropress for my coffee. :)
I've got this bag and intend to use it on an upcoming overnighter. I've wondered though why put the sleeping bag in the bottom section? Why not the tent so that you can then access it it quickly?
I was waiting to see if you used a bladder or not for water because the side pockets are terrible for getting a water bottle out on your own. my only gripe out the kestrel bags. if the 48 has the loops on the back you can take a small string and lace it up like a shoe to strap on anything extra that may not fit in the stretch pocket.
I know exactly what you mean, I’ve pulled my arm muscle several times getting things in and out of the mesh pockets. Luckily I go with mates so I ask them! However, apart from that I can’t really fault it.
Belter video mate gave me some ideas, even with my summer pack it still weighs the same as a bungalow!! I just keep thinking take this just in case, next thing my back is breaking. keep the content coming mate, btw whats the tent in the background , looks like a great campsite tent
Andy, I have looked and looked for clips on Dome vs tunnel tents and there isn't much if any info, I would have thought it would have been quite a topic!! would love to know your thoughts and maybe it would be a good clip? I guess wind direction isn't an issue with the dome style.
Andy quick question? Why don't you put your tent in the bottom separate compartment as it is the first thing that you will take out when you get to your campsite. Because if it is raining you have to take everything out to get to your tent causing everything to get wet?
i ordered a berghaus 30l backpack and im debating it now and amazon have dispatched it to be here for the 26th - 29th and cant cancel it but can return it and pay a charge. i havent received it yet and was thinking of getting the kestrel as i seen its popular.
Hi Andy, thanks for the video. I’ve the 58litre Kestrel so always conscious I mustn’t pack to fill it. I’m going for an overnighted hike Sunday so I’ll compare my weight with yours as the benchmark, Can you let us know what you think of the trekking poles, please? Is the quality good? Are the flip locks metal?
The Unigear trekking poles are very good and have metal flip locks. The Fit Life Carbon poles are very light but nowhere near as well made and have plastic flip locks.
Outstanding video !!!!!! And very informative 👍 😀
Thanks so much 🙏

Personally, I think it’s the best balance of comfort and weight. Mine sometimes weighs 15-16kg so I need the comfort!
nice bird bath with visitor/resident
Interesting, cheers for that Andy.
No worries 👍
Another informative and helpful video Andy, cheers.👍
Thanks Paul 👍
Nice Vlog- very informative and sound advice - Thank you.
Thanks Terry 👍

I’ve used my mates smaller Stratos and I really rate it. The Lanshan 2 Pro is an excellent choice of tent for nice weather!
Great set up , all your missing is some chocolate !
😁
I was given some of that coffee for my last trip out a few weeks ago. The sachet can be reused too. Not a bad cuppa!
Can’t wait to try it!
Some cool stuff, never seen that coffee before.
That coffee is really good! Not cheap, but well worth it in the morning.
I love Wildcamping
Check out my wild camping videos 👍
Really enjoyed your vid. Out tomorrow night on wild camp #7 myself. My pack usually weighs 14kg. Really interested in the 3F UL Lanshan 2 Pro

Bring ur wide brim hat and zinc sun cream! Regular sun cream only last 3-4 hrs
Great idea, thanks for sharing 👍
I believe you can get generic lightweight foldable tent poles to replace hiking poles
Yes you can. Someone on eBay sells them in the UK and you can get them on Aliexpress too.

No idea about the bear box because I live in the UK but all the other items would fit in.
I've got this bag and intend to use it on an upcoming overnighter. I've wondered though why put the sleeping bag in the bottom section? Why not the tent so that you can then access it it quickly?
I prefer to put the sleeping bag in the sleeping bag compartment.

Always worth taking too much than too little! It’s the Naturehike Cloud Peak 2 in the background, it’s a cracking tent.
Another great video Andy!
Can I ask you what is the name and size of the stuff sack in which you put all your clothes in? Thanks
The Sea to Summit eVent drybags are excellent. They're expensive but they're fully waterproof and the air is pushed out as you squeeze them.
@@BackpackingUK thank you Andy, much appreciated.

Great idea, I'll do that sometime 👍
Andy quick question?

Mark from BPUK does exactly that👍
What about some water 💧?
Love the vids mate
I ended up taking 1.5L in the reservoir so sub-10kg all in.
i ordered a berghaus 30l backpack and im debating it now and amazon have dispatched it to be here for the 26th - 29th and cant cancel it but can return it and pay a charge. i havent received it yet and was thinking of getting the kestrel as i seen its popular.
If you intend to go camping, it is highly likely 30L will be way too small.
@@BackpackingUK thank you ill have that in mind and see what i can do. thanks mate i like watching ur videos.
10k mate is my pack weight . osprey stratos 36. summer
Getting your kit into a 36 is very impressive 👍

Hi, I'm looking at this backpack. what is the size of this backpack? and what is your height?
Mine is a M/L and I’m 5’8” 172cm.
What's the brand and model of the tent behind you?
Naturehike Cloud Peak 2, it’s my favourite budget tent.

Is the top flap removable?
Do you mean the lid on the backpack? If so, it’s not removable, it’s fixed on.
This is a genuine comment
Ultralight?? 😏
I’m not getting involved in that debate 😂
why he always say the full name of the bag ? 😂😂
UA-cam Algo 🤓 If I hadn’t you probably would never have seen this video.
Toilet roll?? Poo kit? 💩 😀
On one-nighters I always go for a tactical poo before we leave 😂
@@BackpackingUK 🤣 wow. I’d need a 48L pack just for sh*t tickets 💩 🎟 😂 especially after that coffee ☕️ and packet meals!!
