- This computer would have represented Dell's top of the line (or very close--only the Precision workstation of the time would have been better equipped) computer system in the mid-90s. While I did not check the date codes on the motherboard components, I did find a review dated March 1st, 1995. In this review, it was mentioned that the system shipped with a "colossal" 1GB hard disk (and nobody thought they'd fill such a drive back then)! It was also described as "number one Top 20 power system six months in a row last year" [that would have been the latter half of 1994] by PC World.
This computer was a recipient of the PC Magazine Editor's Choice award in November of 1994. It competed with 45 other Pentium 90 equipped PCs.
The sad thing is, I can very well remember when this would have been a dream system...and now it's just about old enough be considered a "vintage computer"!
I'm just absolutely floored that the original clock battery is still keeping time, and not just that, but the RIGHT time. Who says miracles don't happen?
"Smoke TEST!!!!!"
Thanks for all the computer videos Uxw! To be honest I did not know anything about a computer about 2-3 years ago but after I saw your videos I learned quite a lot. After watching your videos I grew motivation to buy a broken computer. I diagnosed it, fixed it, and sold it. This was like 2 years ago though. Anyways keep on making these wonderful vids!
"it is now safe to shut down your computer" i remember those messages.
Loving the monitor. Had a few back in middle school
I remember growing up with this computer.
Yes Dells tag codes are awesome.
That is a very old computer! I have a late 1990s Dell Dimension XPS at my father house that runs Windows 98.
Nice video, and very nice system. I was a Compaq fan until HP bought them, and now find that Dell system of this era to be of comparable quality.
It's a miracle that the machine is right there on your desk. Most Pentium-90s vanish in a flash of blue light when they hit the 88MHz mark during POST.
Then again, dude, you got a Dell. Maybe they're different.
Lately I have been thinking about building a server with any of these fan-less atom processors because I want a quiet machine. But after I watched this video I'm happy to know that I may actually find something cheaper that can do the same job.
I know it is going to be hard to find something like that, and even if I do it, it might not be as quiet, but it doesn't hurt to try!
Thanks for video!

That box takes me back to 1995 or so. I liked those cases. Quick to take off and put on.
glad tae see your computer collection agian. BTW it's me, blueplanet64
@Larry Henry, those Optiplex machines are great computers. I've come to really like the Dell desktops over the past year or so especially. They are the easiest to find drivers for and they have really nice case designs for them.
Snagged a XPS P100c today for free, just needed a replacement hard disk...clean, well cared for, and has 80MB RAM to boot!
I just upgraded to this model. It kicks ass!!! ;)
Do another dishwasher video Bill, your original video is one of my favorites from you! :)
I heard that it stands for Xtreme Performance System
I found a Dell-OptiPlex GX-260 at the Salvation Army for $14.95 Last Monday. Pentium P4 (2Ghz), 256MB of RAM, 20GB Hard-drive, on-board Video. It had Windows-XP-SP2. I formated it with GParted, and installed Puppy Linux Lucid Puppy "Finlandia" 5.2.8+500. Runs like a charm. So you can get a PC cheaply if you just hunt a bit...I'm using it to write this post.
