Waves Live Vocal Compression

- Watch as I show you how I set up my Waves plugins for polished, clear vocals that will stay in front of your mix... and not hurt anybody. Get that studio sound for your live mix with Waves plugins on your live vocals.
You have to be careful with live vocal plugins that are designed for the studio, because changing presets can add a whole lot of gain in a hurry if you're not careful.

You are incredibly talented! I am so thankful for your channel and the content you post! MORE CONTENT! ;)
Ha, I have always used that f6 trick. I use it to tame boomy acoustic guitars. I have made myself presets that go from 20 to 20khz so that there’s one band for C, one for C#, D and so on. Works like magic.
I would love to see a full video of you mixing sound for a full service! Like you did towards the end of this one. You have helped me so much in my mixes! Cheers!
That'd be awesome! It's a little tricky since I'd have to work out copyright issues with all the songwriters/publishers for each song in the set.
Attaway Audio Oh for sure! Copyright is so annoying, but I understand why it exists. If that isn’t possible, and cool video idea could be “a sunday morning with attaway audio” (granted once this virus thing is over)
It’s great to protect people’s work. It’s also difficult to get all the permissions with umpteen songwriters and their publishing companies to use it. Even podcasters have trouble getting the time of day from publishers
Great stuff brother. Really enjoying your channel 👍
A great video thank you for sharing it 🙏
If you start by swapping those Shures for mics that match the singers, most of these problems go away. Now you get away from "fixing" things to using these amazing tools for tone shaping and enhancing. I do love the effect you get from CLA2A and CLA76 combined. Combining the comps is really where it shines!!! Great videos for sure!!!!
You are an absolute EXPERT> WE_NEED_MORE... Studio stuff, too!
Fantastic video!!
Thank you very much!
Thanks for the tutorials. Great work. Would love a video sometime going through how your rig is configured with waves and the board as well as your hardware. Thanks again
Thanks shomari7! I started making a walkthrough of our system one time and it was incredibly boring. I'll try again sometime. But the short version is that we're running a Waves server with a MADI interface for inserting on our SSL L200 console. The computer is running SuperRack to control it, but all the audio is going to the Waves server and straight back to the console.
Can I also connect eMotion Lv1, just like superrack ?
Perfect mix! Those drums sound clean!
Thanks 🔥 glad my drums sound good in a vocal plugin video 🤣🤣🤣
@@AttawayAudio drums sounded to clean brother! I'm using a midas m32 at my church any tips?! Thanks!
Try exploring the dynamo compressor on the snare drum, slow attack, fast release
can you help me with routing questions? or can you make a guide video how to get routing correctly done with DAW and mixer and Plugins... thanks for your videos.
what was on the toms
Have you ever used the sibilance live de-esser I’ve been using it and seem to like it I’ve also used the one that you’re using and it’s Good to.
I like that one! The GUI is really helpful for understanding what part of the words you're smashing the top-end on 😂
Could you address any processing on room mics for broadcast?
For this one, it was pretty simple. High pass filter to 150-200ish, and then some compression... 2:1, 20ms attack, 100ms release, about 5db of compression in the big parts. But it all changes if you're in a dead movie theater-type space.
I'm planning on making some broadcast-specific videos in the future, but only after I tackle the beast of monitor mixing. Thanks for watching! Love getting topic suggestions.
What I request for is this song, this live song. Please
sounds nice. look, i see prayer warriors in that place. Cool brother. just subbed
Thanks Sounds of the Garden! Luke 18 🙌
Cool song!
May I ask a link to download multitrack to the composition?
unfortunately I don't have permission to send it out
Great tutorial! I've been loving all of your videos, actually! Would your recommendations be similar for a pre-recorded mix for those of us putting our songs together at home for streaming on Sunday at the moment? I have the CLA-76 and the F6, along with the Renaissance compressor, and I'm looking to get my vocal to sit better in with the music. This week, I'm looking to send everything into and then back out of my X32 (it's also my audio interface, via Dante) into StudioOne for recording/processing. Until now, I've only been using the channel compressor on the vocal and some plate reverb in the X32 itself, recording it all to stereo using the onboard USB, and I'd like to get a better overall sound for Easter. I'm hoping I can use the Waves plugins to do that.
Thanks Jesse! You'll get a lot of milage out of the F6 and CLA-76 together. The RComp has a lot of great settings on it, look for an opto mode or something that can help it feel more like an LA-2A. Also, if you have RVox, that's a killer plugin too, very simple. Sorry for the late response - maybe it'll help you for next Easter 😂
Attaway Audio Thanks for the reply! Well, thanks to your channel and some others, I’ve been continuing to work on my skills during the quasi-quarantine. I’ve added a bit to my arsenal as well. In my home studio, I added an Apollo X4 and some great plugins from UAD and I grabbed the LA-2A from waves as well. We just started our outdoor services last week and we were able to put a mobile rig together (with an X32 Rack). I’m running virtual sound checks, mixing with plugins after the service (I lead from keys and run sound at the moment), and just all around improving our sound. I have a long ways to go for sure, but your channel has been one of the ones that’s really helping to drive me forward. Thank you for all that you do, brother!
HOLY SHIT THE DRUMS SOUND GOOD
Well that’s one way to comment on a vocal plugin tutorial 🤷🏻♂️
I wonder if there is a lot of audience noise, a lot of band noise, someone adviced that compression can make those sounds louder, can you say something about that and the interference between unwanted sounds and vocals?
Any time you compress, you're raising the noise floor. So yes, you're on the right track.
I can ask for 😢 File deylay vs reveb .
Thanks you ❤
What’s the name of the song at the end?
chieffff hope all is great u think its logic i can compress more and still retain tone while performing with digital compressors like cla 2a or lesuire more than a rnc or dbx analog compressors in monitors on vocal channel only ??
I haven't compared the two side-by-side, and I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "retain tone," but the LA2A-style compressors are very transparent when compressing a lot
@@AttawayAudio i mean sing prparly without losing tonality ....i feel analog adds artifact and bit of pump but not digital is that i have to listen to foh while performing so finding happy medium
Quick question easy question do you use cla vocal if not what reverb and delay do you use and where in the chain
Warmly johannes
God bless from New Zealand
Hey Johannes! I haven't used the signature series plugins yet. Should probably try them out, but I like knowing all the little variables under the hood personally :)
Hi! Great trick with the f6 whistle preset. Can you share it?
Thanks in advance!
Great sounding drums btw man.
Thanks Moritz! I’ll see if I can put something together. Message me on FB or Insta so I don’t forget 😀
I'd like to get these presets, too, or at least see a video on how to make them.
Watching nd trying to do all these in my A&H Qu32 mixer for next worship in our church ;-) .........
Let me know how that goes for you!
@@AttawayAudio Vry much limitations in evrything..... still changes are there.....
Hey! Awesome video! question: Did you set up your room mics stereo facing the band or facing the crowd?
They're facing the crowd. The band on stage is relatively quiet, with guitar amps underneath the stage, no open wedges, and drums in a booth.
Thanks for your videos! Are you using Smaart on a mac next to your board?
You're welcome! Yes - using Smaart. I've got a video in the works on how I use it. Super helpful tool
@@AttawayAudio That would be great. I run sound at my church and have wanted a tool to utilize like Smaart. But there aren't a lot of resources on how to use it.
Can I use a Howard bensonnvocal plug in live?
Yes, but you'll have to use a VST host like LiveProfessor or a DAW
@@AttawayAudio thanks dude let me look this stuff up
Would it be possible to know how you are running the waves plug ins?? And about how much your front of house rig runs?? Thanks
Sure! I’ll make a video about our setup sometime
Could you realistically get the same amount of compression in the venue? Meaning, without getting feedback.
Depends on a number of factors, including where and how directional your speakers are, how far they are from the stage, polar pattern on the mic, and how loud your singer is singing. And probably more. But yes it's possible.
@@AttawayAudio Appreciate the reply! It always leaves me wondering seeing loud, at times screaming singers, walking up the platform in an arena, pretty much in the middle of the venue, meaning, wayyy in front of the PA, and having the sound guy still having the vocals perfectly levelled with what seems a lot of compression rather then riding the fader. I could never understand how that's possible without feedbacking.
Dude thank you so much ! Isn't that the Ihopkc ?
It is! Well, the Forerunner Church building at least
cool mix sir...
Thanks Halid Haris!
@@AttawayAudio i see you subs only 2 boxes i assume that 2x18" speakers in it (in your other video).so how did your mix cover the low end in huge venue like that???
Those are Meyer subs ( can't remember which model) so they've got plenty of juice.
Cool stuff, can't go wrong with that
Ok but the drummer was killing it
I know, right? That’s Travis Damme. He’s the one teaching tuning drums on that video I have
Wait! What? You use plugins on an SSL board??
Please don't tell me that you use the SSL channel plugin.. or any SSL plugin
Still, I love your videos
Haha! I don't typically for simplicity's sake, but taking a good mix to a great mix happens in baby-steps, and the Waves plugins help me get just that much more polished.
The console's built-in-everything sounds fantastic; its rare that I feel I "need" something else. It does have a SSL Bus Compressor emulation, and that's typically on my Groups (Drums, Band, Vocals) and my stereo bus. But no, I haven't tried the SSL E-Channel EQ plugin while running the SSL console :)
Apple watch alerts! Aaargh
“I bought this thing and apple made it so it must be smarter than you” 😬
Luke Handricson channel strip i have to say :)
My god, what a horrible song!
