Once back - I would love to visit you if you permit? You might be interested in my True live story? I think watching you for a few years we could have some interesting conversations 😁 I loved the Freedom and wilderness in Canada - I am a Falconer, and H Guide , - I got imported to Canada by my Parents 1981 - and I know what it feels like to be vilified - - because of being of a certain ""Evil "" race 🤔😄 "' I loved Thailand because the Thais dit not care what country I was from ,jthey just cared how I behave and act . 1 Respect for all Thais poor ,old , young , ugly ,nice , - I give everyone respect - and iam happy if respect is returned 😀 if not I walk 😔

Great video and great channel. But maybe you can ask your wife how to pronounce the Thai word for foreigner. My guess is that most Thais would not know what you are saying when you pronounce it that way. It's like the difference between "rang" and "lung". Cheers.

Mate, I think it is about time that falang pulled their heads in. Thailand has long been too tolerant of boorish foreigners, IMO, and it has made me feel ashamed of my western culture when witnessing abominable behaviour by fellow Aussies and Kiwis and Poms and Russians and Yanks, etc. They know money talks and they fully exploit it. I know there are badly behaved Thais and that there can also be genuine misunderstandings but we have witnessed a massive increase in toxic behaviour in our own countries, with people getting thrown off flights due to unbelievably entitled behaviour and so this new wave of anti social behaviour is undoubtedly impacting tourist destinations like Thailand. I love the Thai people , I ALWAYS smile, now slightly and act in a polite & friendly manner, I never forget to be courteous and respectful, because , as the old saying goes, it doesn’t cost any extra to be nice. I expect I will be judged because of my size (193cm) and skin colour, so, I already project an amiable & polite aura wherever I go. It comes naturally, so, easy as for me. I applaud the focus on poor behaviour, and I want Thai authorities to act when there are clear cases of falang disrespect. But I empathise with your feeling of being singled out by skin colour, it is inevitable.

Not sure what could be done. I'm from the USA, and have watched Americans become increasing agitated in recent years. It's a trend with no end, I am afraid. Naturally, many seek relief by traveling to countries like Thailand but end up 'exporting the agitation'. This is not good on many levels. The Thai's don't need it, as their culture promotes the opposite. I wish I had an answer, but for now I think we can only make an extra effort to be respectful and kind, individually.

Excellent comment and I believe you addressed the heart of the matter. I lived outside the U.S. for 33 years and came back a few years ago to find a country that I didn't recognize. The level of tension, frustration and unhappiness among men here in the U.S. is off the charts. And irritability is a well-known side effect of depression, which seems to be widespread here and from what I've read, is a growing problem for men in the West.
Going overseas doesn't magically cure that basic unhappiness, tension and irritability. Western men take those characteristics with them to foreign countries, act out and make a bad impression. I just came back from a month in the Philippines and a more glum-looking group of white male expatriates would be very hard to find. In addition, I noticed a change in the Philippine attitude toward us. Not only are we no longer celebrities, but there is sometimes a coldness and disrespect toward us that I didn't feel the last time I was there, about six years ago.
Part of it is due to something that is not our fault, though. The West is in decline, Asia is rising and everyone knows it. My Korean friends would diplomatically hint at that as long as ten years ago and I noticed at least that long ago that Koreans had less respect for me than before. We may think we're still the pre-eminent group of nations, but our status is dropping quickly and let's face it, status is very important to Asians.
So a combination of factors is causing this very noticeable loss of respect for us, and warmth toward us, in Asia.

    • @jlvandat69
      @jlvandat69 2 місяці тому +6

@@PennPearson Excellent observations. There's clearly a major social trend underway in the USA. It's complex- well above my pay grade to understand. The USA remains the most technically-advanced nation but the costs associated with very rapid advancement are mounting fast. The workplace is much different than it was 10-20 years ago. As you say, men, especially appear to be impacted the greatest. There's a 'psychological erosion' that ubiquitous. I don't know the answers, but I do know that escaping to a tropical paradise only moves the problem overshore, generally-speaking. I minimally engage in social media and try to focus on simple stuff which includes time with locals, the ocean and reading. I miss friends and family in the USA, but resist making return trips more and more. I just hope answers can be found soon, there's younger generations in the USA I have real concerns about.

@fredrikbergquist5734 I've not noticed any difference between late 2016, which is the time you're referring to and anytime before Covid.
Covid is what really brought out the worst in Thai people, not the most recent incidents. Thais were blaming farang and just foreigners in general for spreading a non-existent virus. Banks, long distance buses and restaurants all refused to accept foreign customers for months, beginning in mid March 2020 through to at least June.
Vigilante online hate groups such as Spotlight Thailand threatened foreigners for not being afraid of Covid and staying home.
It was a very unpleasant time to be in Thailand. Locals avoided you and if you didn't double mask at all times like they did, you were seen as an enemy of the state.

As a Thai, I agree with you. With the incidents that have happened recently, our perception of "Farang" has shifted a *little bit.* We used to view Farang as "outsiders" who interested in our country and, therefore, should be treated with utmost respect.
Now, after the Swiss men news, we watch Farang as "potential misbehaviourers who may look down upon our country and people." We could also say that Thais also misbehaved, and I 100% agree with that notion. However, the couple of incidents with Swiss men have been associated with disdainful attitudes from Farang toward Thais, resulting in elevated caution toward Farang among Thais. I'm also fully aware of the saddening facts that some Thais have a bad habit of lumping all "farang" together, disregarding the diversity among farang (the same happened to asians and muslim in "Farang" country, too, I supposed).
It saddens me as a Thai who watched a lot of "Farang" videos. The word "Farang", while not associated in any way with any racism notion, still undeniably contains some nuance as an "outsider." I've been looking foward to the day when the word "farang" will be integrated deeply enough into the Thai culture where even the mainstream Thais considered "farang" as an "insiders", similiar to Chinese, or Muslim. These incidents from "Farang", however, undermined this progression.
I, personally, still appreciate "Farang" who also appreciates our country. You guys remind us the better side of our country that we may not be able to see for ourselves due to politics and stuff.

Unfortunately the new visa rules that prioritize rich persons will not help, my experience is that rich persons are more often arrogant and entitled than ordinary persons. Switzerland is the richest country in Europe. One question to you that is Thai is: how do you perceive the big influx of Russians the last years? Are they behaveing well?

    • @polpojliekwanjaroen3511
      @polpojliekwanjaroen3511 2 місяці тому +1

@fredrikbergquist5734 I do not live in Phuket, so I don't know much firsthanded about how they behave there where the majority of Russians reside.
At least from what I heard (mostly from Farang videos and comments), they were quite ill-mannered and illegally competed with the locals in term of doing bussiness. If these were true, I hope the government would do something about it.
But for me, personally, I have never encountered any bad Russian (again, mostly because I live in neither Phuket nor Bangkok). There're always some Farang who are causing trouble from time to time appearing on the news, but that's not exclusively happened from the Russians. There were the Britishs, Norwegians, and the most recently, the Swiss, which surprises some Thais quite a bit because we usually perceive Switzerland as a very civilized country. By having them making scene on the news 2 times consecutively was rather unexpected, while the Russians who we usually perceive as somewhat "less civilized" (no offence) made their scene in the news not as often.

I stay in SE Asia for a couple of months every summer and always respect the local people and culture. This is the first year that I'm feeling a bit apprehensive about Thailand , mainly due to the huge influx of Russians. For this reason, this year I'm only going to book accommodation week to week, so that I can just go to the Philippines, Laos or Vietnam if Thailand no longer feels welcoming. I still don't understand the free visas for Russians - it's like Thailand is completely oblivious to the trouble that they bring. I have so much love for Thailand but the reality is that if I get bad vibes this summer, it's unlikely that I would ever return.

Even these rich countries can get income from others industries, doesn’t mean they don’t care about tourism industry right? The reason there are many shitty farang tourist in Asian countries is because the local in general are too soft to the point of being exploited while some shitty Farang have colonial I’m better than you mindset attitude toward the asain, that’s all.

I disagreed. Regardless of race, what David and his wife did was totally (โคต) wrong. He loves Elephant, but kick a small woman on the back just for sitting on his front porch! (little did he knew that his front porch was evading the public space). To me, he is narcissistic and an oxymoron. But since he is White (Farang) and his wife is Thai, and the victim is a doctor, the situation just get magnified. If he was Thai, it would still be on the news, general Thai publics would still get pissed, but he wouldn't get kick-out of the country. However, what his wife said to the two victims at the time was (โคต) outrageous - it's abusing of power. Yet, what he did with his middle finger to the ambulance van shown a total disrespect for Thai people. Just as an English Golden rule, "Treat others the way you want to be treated". You are a guess to our country, (อยู่บ้านท่านอย่านึ่งดูดาย ปั้นวัวปั้นควาย ให้ลูกท่านเล่น) respect Thai's laws, Thai's culture, and Thai people, and you will be very welcome here with a high respect.

Government has nothing to do with this. It’s the government who give free 90 days VISA to the foreigners (Chinese, Russian). The prime minister come from property company Sansiri ( he sold all shares before becoming PM, but now his daughter hold the big shares) and now this company have big project in Phuket for 5 years, and we all know that Phuket is full of the Russian and the Chinese, and he used to post on Twitter that he support the idea that foreigners can buy the land in Thailand, this idea was brought up by previous PM but faced the back lash from the Thai people so he had to stop that idea. The medias just follow the trend, if that news have more engagement, more post in social media, then they will keep digging about same kind of news.

Him and his two friends seemed to think it was funny. Edit: And before anyone asks, I had not been drinking.
It made me feel much less welcome in the country, particularly when I read anecdotal stories about what happens when a farang defends themselves on the street. This video explains what I suspected was going through these young men's heads.

You mentioned for Thai people to not paint all farangs with the same brush and I would say the same to you. Not all Thai people are the same. Thai people are intelligent and they know who they’re dealing with.
The surest way to be well treated in Thailand (or anywhere else) is to treat people with respect which in my opinion includes speaking their language especially if you’re an expat or a frequent traveler.
My relationship with Thai people improves in direct proportion to my improvement with Thai language and I’ve personally never felt unwelcome.
Even for those who are not keen on learning Thai formally like I am, at least learn the basics. It will make the world of difference and will mitigate that sense of entitlement that a lot of foreigners seem to have.

I agree with you. Although the official backlash here in Phuket had been severe. Multiple news reports of many daily arrests for working with no WP or overstays. I agree that any wrongdoers must be punished. But to those of use long stayers it makes many sort of look over their shoulder nervously. We are all here at the pleasure of the Thai Government. We must never forget that. I too have added value to Thailand by helping my Thai wife buy land and build homes for long stay rental. Eventually that grew into a Thai registered company and a WP for me to legally assist my with in her business. So I paid Thai income tax for about 15 years. During all those years I always felt hostility from all the various gov departments trying to trip me up and throw me out of Thailand. They seemed very happy not to renew my WP once I reached 65. My reply to why you not want my tax money met with a sort of we don't care. Luckily I have a tight circle of Thai friends and family. I dont go out to the bars and I only socialise with our paying guests at my wife's private business here in Kata. We sold our Patong land/property/company in Patong. Glad to see the back of that. At last I am almost retired age 75.

I seen the same stuff happen before, during my decade in Asia.

It's the same with the visas, you will never know. If you get a new one, or when they will change their visa policies.

Understand the sentiment and have sat with various teachings over the years, my issue with the manifestation narrative is a girl does not manifest being raped in a war zone through her projection, children do not manifest being bombed through their projection, we could talk of collective manifestation, which of course is the fundamental principle of Hinduism, we are all atman co-creating reality for the sake of experience, but still there are collective forces at work independently of the individual experience that are not manifested nor attracted. Ultimately, if all phenomenon is simply a happening in empty space as the Advaita people believe then it doesn't really matter anyway. I agree with your final statement, set an example and in the words of Sri Ramanamaharshi, interfere in the lives as others as little as possible.

Thai people don't judge you by your appearance. Whether it's religion, skin color, beliefs, LGBTQ, or whatever. Most of us Thai people don't care about these things at all😂 We always smile Because we believe that a smile will make things we encounter better. Regardless of whether the situation is good or bad, because our happiness does not depend on 100% yourself, but we are happy 50% to get another 50% from other people. That is "ทำบุญ"( I don't know what it means because the meaning is very broad) that we adhere to.
So, don't worry at all. We may keep some distance during this period but I believe that everyone in Thailand recognizes that it is a matter of just a few people. Well not sure how i can voice my thoughts and feelings on this issue , but I know for a fact that many thai people do not want us here, they just tolerate us because of our money. But many don't want us with there women, but also this is a very difficult topic. But in defense of thai people you can't really blame them, because this is their country. I also have 15 years of experience here.well this happens in most countries, also Thailand is not a multi cultural country like Canada where I am from. But I love Thailand and I am always aware of my position and try to be very respectful , humble and very helpful to them. But this is a huge topic for a very long conversation !

Sounds like we agree, except I’ve found 50% of the Thais I meet care nothing for my money, my wife and her family never asked me a baht - but agree with everything else 👍🙏

I often travel to the Netherlands and I see something similar. Many Amsterdamers have become really annoyed with misbehavior. In that case, it is often young men looking to party for a weekend or two with lots of the green stuff and way too much alcohol. I have seen older people getting really aggressive. Maybe if they kick them out for a year or two but it is a difficult problem.

Great video, I’ve been married to a Thai wife for 15 years in California and one and a half years living in Thailand. I worry about drunk Russian men flooding into Thailand.

    Hello Damo & Rayn,
unfortunately it's like everywhere else in the world, a few people make the "negative headlines"!
These are spread by the "new media" in a very short time.
The many positive people who treat each other with respect are not shown.
They are not worth the headlines and are not interested enough.
People like you Rayan, who respect the values of the host country and who also respect the cultural values are not appreciated enough.
I have a lot of respect for you because you show that things can be different.
I am currently in Phu Kradeung and am trying to find myself and maybe find happiness here. I wish you all the best, happiness and health 🙏🫶🙏
    Kind regards from
    Udo
