      Ty Erin, like I'm dead serious I feel so validated! I have been stuck working in medical offices for 6 years (still somehow don't have good enough health insurance) and I have been wanting to do this for about a year. I want to eventually go back to college online, travel with my husband, and take better care of myself. It's a long story lol.
      Point is, I have the means, and I kept getting shut down. Every single person I have ever spoken to gives me 8 hours of unsolicited advice. I am perfectly capable of learning something new and finding what *I'm* good at. But I have literally never been comfortable with getting an LLC and a Squarespace with some headshots and "being" a freelancer now. I don't have anything to offer. Yet. I get an idea and I work backwards. And honestly your content has given me the validation that I always kind of understood how this works. I'm not incorrect, the system is flawed and overly complicated. I am a valuable asset when I'm treated like a human. Sometimes you have to do it yourself. Just saying that I love this. I needed this. And I think you're a beautiful person. Ty so much for the time you put into this. You are a wonderful asset to everyone who is, privately or publicly, riding that struggle bus. ❤

    Hey Erin, I just wanted to drop a quick note and say how much it's meant to me to have someone say "You got this" every so often. In the last couple years, I started working remote, lost my mom, got divorced, got laid off from my favorite position I've ever had, and now I'm trying to get back into school to upgrade my AA to a BA. I don't have a lot of friends or professional peers and your cheerful encouragement has been something that I really appreciate. Thank you for spreading info on how to self-advocate. Be well. Cheers, Hannah

    I'm an attorney and I'm shocked when freelancers do not set up a LLC. It is very easy to do on your own and it costs about $50 a year. Those legal protections are needed for a reason - to protect your personal assets. Take the hour to create the LLC.

    In adult foreign language instruction, freelancing absolutely is the norm for teachers. Most work for multiple language schools (which are themselves private for-profit companies) and do some private lessons as well. Maybe it's a bit niche, but it is the standard. Not actually by choice, many teachers would prefer to be employed by one of the language schools and maybe freelance on the side, but they don't have the option

    Thank you so much! I started freelance video editing this year as a side huscle while I'm in university studying a BA in Film and Television. I have always wanted to be a full time freelance video editor and the beginning is rough, but my first client was a dream to work with. He loved my personality, I loved his, we worked well together, the workload was not too heavy as well as the hours worked well for me. I can't wait for more clients in the future!!!
    Always so nice to meet other freelance video editors, I feel like I'm getting specific help to my journey and needs

    Excellent advice! Let me add that when setting up any business you need a separate business bank account and business credit card. NEVER comingle (mix) business funds with personal money. Setting up separate accounts will make your accounting so much easier.

    a) Teachers can be freelancers, as long as they don't stick to the idea that teaching happens in school class and is about kids learning abc. Also, just because there are "glute makeover specialists" or "learn English in under 3sec " teachers, it doesn't mean that all teachers teach useless subjects that are not in demand. (well, yes)
    b) Some of the advice is specifically for the U.S.A, I think, like whether you need to set up a company or not. Tax obligations and conditions to get permission to freelance vary from country to country. I guess viewers already know that. I'm just saying that some "mistakes" are not happening because of inexperience or entitlement. They may be happening because some country's business laws are ..erm... unreasonable and you really have to take those wrong steps to be legal and protected from useless tax audits.

    An LLC is pretty easy to setup, and offers some nice advantages while looking pretty professional if you do set it up early in the game. In my state it's literally an online form and like $60 bucks. That let's you have limited liability and lets you give the LLC's tax ID to your client, versus your personal SSN. That alone is worth the hassle, I don't wanna give random strangers my SSN.

    • @AdviceWithErin
      @AdviceWithErin  11 місяців тому +1

      That’s why I recommend getting an EIN! I think LLCs are great. They’re just a huge distraction people get fixated on before actually getting clients
