I remember showing this game off to my friends on the PC me and my Dad built. We we're blown away by the lighting, and frankly it still looks great to this day.
You can mod it to improve graphics on regular version on PC. BFG Edition is not mod-able. I remember doing it like 7-8 years ago making it look like a PS4 game.
I always thought Doom 3 was the best Doom game. I’m not a fan of super fast paced run and gun, but the slow paced more survival horror approach of Doom 3 I loved.
Doom 3 is very well made and is quite an achievement for its time. But I personally don't like the overall darkness that forces you to switch to the flashlight time and again. Also, searching for passwords in the PDA's logs is also a deal breaker. The game resembles more the "Alone in the Dark" franchise than Doom, actually.
Usually survivor horrors are not linear, think of it like Dead Space or RE4 that's a survivor horror where you need to go through the same place more than three or four times. Doom3 was just find the exist, repeat. If you think the final release is horror you should totally play the alpha Doom3.
The monster teleporting in mechanic was done more to save frame rate than to scare the player. Using 3D models for everything meant they couldn't just fill a room with hoards of monsters like they did with DooM 1 and 2, so this way they could limit how many "active" monsters there were at a given time, without each room being limited to 2-3 monsters total. They did their best to make this teleporting in scary, but there wasn't much they could do about making it less predictable after a while.
Half-Life was actually not inspired by Doom to my knowledge, they were instead both based on a Steven King story (I forgot which one). However, Doom 3's story and world was conceived of waaaay before Half-Life's ever was, it just ended up not being used in Doom 1 or 2. Doom 3 is essentially the entire "Doom Bible" by Tom Hall. Incidentally, the game's DLC, Resurrection of Evil, featured a Gravity Gun ripoff... at least, that's what people thought until it was revealed they had had that idea for the original game, it just never made the cut.
Ohhh interesting. I actually never played the expansion. From memory it features something like bullet time? Or perhaps I am getting confused… either way I have no excuse not to play it so I will plan too!
@@AlexeiVoronin You are technically correct that it's more correct to refer to RoE as an expansion pack but at this juncture, it's just semantics more than anything else.
I need to go back to Quake 4 properly… I went back to it briefly for my Quake 1 video and it felt pretty dated, but I only really played the first 20 minutes. The graphics looked great though to be fair.
They actually have always had a way through console commands to turn stencils into soft shadows. That's how they intended the shadows to look, like in their very first reveal at apple. The feature was turned off though for release, as it just used too much processing for the target pc spec. I remember being bummed about it, then finding the toggle in the console which sent the game into a slideshow
Doom3 was my favorite Doom, Doom was always supposed to be scary but the tech of the time of the originals just didn't allow for it. to be properly realized.
Doom 64 was the first one that was scary for me. You could see that it was a big inspiration on Doom 64. That and the haunting PSX soundtrack for the PlayStation port of Doom. Doom 3 was only the logical evolution for the series if you ask me.
doom 3 was the only game of all the doom game that sent chills down my spine and the moment where the jump scares did it well to giving it the horror feel to it.
Doom 3 was my first Doom game and I played it on PC in 2004. Loved it but I only made it to just after the hell level playing with my brother & dad. Actually beat it on the BFG Edition on Xbox 360 in 2012 followed by both PC BFG & OG Doom 3. I also have Doom 3 Xbox around the time we got the OG PC one in 2004 but I still haven’t beat that version yet. I did see Doom 1 episode 2+3 as my dad played it after Doom 3 but I didn’t know it was Doom until I played on XBLA soon before BFG as I thought it looked more like Duke Nukem Advance. To me, Doom 3 is the gold standard with the best extending on both that and the popular idea of what Doom is thanks to classic Doom, such as Doom 4, Eternal, Brutal Doom, Brutal Doom Extermination Day & Doom 64 (regular & Brutal).
I finally finished Doom 3 last night and was so excited, I had to share on the subreddit. I titled my post something like, 'Why did they reboot it?' Turns out, many people found Doom 3 too slow-paced. But I loved the slower pace! It was terrifying, and I thought it captured the atmosphere of the original two games perfectly. I mentioned how the environment design, sounds, and even the enemies popping out of hidden areas were great. Unfortunately, most people seemed more focused on the slower pace and lack of power. While it's fun to imagine a protagonist who can 'Rip and Tear' through everything, I prefer a character who faces incredible odds and still manages to overcome them. The horror elements in Doom 3 were fantastic. I'm still working through Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal, but I do miss the fear factor. I love the graphics and speed in those games, though.
It's not a "survival horror", how is it "survival"? It's an action horror game with 0 survival elements. You didn't explain this, I really wanted to hear what kind of bullshit would you say about it being "survival".
I remember being quite young when this game first came out and watching my dad play it. After enough begging, he finally let me play too. Needless to say, I didn’t sleep well that night, haha. But I played it again the next night, and the night after that, with my dad laughing every time I got jump-scared. This eventually led me to the first two Doom games, which I quickly fell in love with! Doom 3 sparked my love for horror games, and after playing through the Dead Space series, I’m now desperate for more sci-fi survival/action horror games. Great video!
Yeah let’s just say I wasn’t sleeping like a baby after playing it the first time around. It was just very unsettling. But like you I agree it really kickstarted my love for the genre!
Due to doom 3's vastly different gameplay, it is always a unique experience. At first it seems like the enemies are dumb, but they are actually programmed really well, with the imps sometimes doing rolls. I feel some of the level design doesn't work, but some of the combat sections can be quite tough. Some say the shotgun is bad, mainly because of the spread, but I see it more as a reason to plan more, and one that forces you to get close to the enemy. I defaulted to the machine gun on my first playthrough, but now that I'm getting more into it, I'm actually liking the shotgun's damage potential, If you're able to dance around fireballs and other stuff, you can get a close shot and it really pays off. And the plasma rifle works so well, makes hell knights trivial if you aim for the head.
Doom 3 is a great game. To me, it felt more like a "realistic" take of how events would truly unfold, instead of Doom and Doom 2 (which I love), having a herculean Doom guy running around giant levels and rooms at breakneck speeds that favor the superfast hero.
Great to see a mature approach to analysing the game for what it is, D3 certainly deserves a lot of credit for its contributions and incredible achievements at the time. Personally, it's my favourite in the series as well, it's the unique one with a much more realistic and dark approach homing in a lot more on atmosphere, ambience and methodical combat rather than just a power fantasy. The slow reloading doesn't bother me one bit, in fact it's so refreshing to have smooth animations being believable rather than just sleight of hand stuff that takes you out of the immersion which is more the norm of today. And yes you mentioned the environments, they do a lot to enforce that "realistic/believable" side in an otherwise quite unrealistic event, similar to the world building in Dead Space or Alien. As for critique, spot on with the teleportation, it gets overwhelming and especially in the late game, which is also one of the biggest shortcomings of the expansion that pulls that all the time from the start. Lost Missions, at least initially, is much more well paced than roe. I'd say that yes the detail in the textures don't hold up that well but the geometric attention to detail and texture variation in the levels certainly do, and It's pretty crazy for the time being compared to other games. As for the flashlight it complimented the design of the original very well, you traded visibility for firepower, and it certainly helped to build tension. The gui interactions to this day remain quite unique and brings a lot to feeling connected to the world. Dark sci-fi horror just hasn't been done much at all, to be honest. It's Doom 3 and Dead Space that are the big names even to this day, a shame but understandable given how niche the concept is. I doubt the ID of today will ever go back to something so grounded. Thanks again for a good video :)
Cheers for the kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I totally agree on the actual level geometry... Doom 3 really does a great job of making you feel part of the world.
I always liked Doom 3, to hell with the haters. Of all the Doom games it's the one that was trying to be the scariest, it's like survival horror with big guns. All sorts of creepy sounds like babies crying, screams and other creepy sounds along with some genuinely unnerving environments makes for a really good horror game. The newer Doom games are enjoyable, but thematically they are very different than the previous games: environments are far too bright and lack the grimy forboding look of the previous games, they are also very arcade like in their game play with all the power ups. I would love a Doom 3 remaster.
Doom 3 in VR REALLY brings the horror out of it on such a unique way. Having played it, I actually jumped a few times in a way I haven’t since I was a kid. I remember Doom 3 being scary, but as you stated, it isn’t the same now a days. Again though, in VR, Doom 3 is an absolutely phenomenal experience
The original D3 was DEFINITELY survival horror. It was FAR more stingy with ammo pickups. There were many times I was reminded of resident evil and fearing I would run out of ammo. They also took out pretty big sections of many levels. I think the original was honestly way better than BFG edition.
The other thing I don't think a lot of people notice is the low-res texture bug that appears in the Steam version of Doom 3. I've noticed it in your footage here, and when I first played the version back in 2018, I noticed it right away. A remaster obviously would fix that. Seeing Doom 3 running in the latest doom engine would be interesting.
@@ManDuderGuy it very well could've been in my side. My computer has a Radeon 580. I confirmed that a lot of people had the issue by googling it but the card you have may be more compatible, especially it it's newer.
@@cybernightzero5891 I have a new build but I re-used my old psu and gpu (gtx 1650 4gb). Friggit, it's only like 10 bucks I'll get it on steam. Happy trails broski.
Nice channel btw. Very underrated. As far as doom 3 is concerned imagine a ray traced version of it with higher res textures. I hope it happens one day.
I really like Doom 3 for what it is, and it was that game that made myself and half my friends upgrade their computers at the time. I do however think that it gets a bit drawn out and tedious in the 2nd half and I really think it would work better with a remake than a remaster. I find myself going back to it every now and then, but never bothering to finish it, the game kinda feels like it outstays its welcome to me. More quality of life stuff added, maybe some variety in the content. Graphically I think it still stands up better than most games from that era and its already part of the charm. Also, funny enough this game at the time made me realize that I wasnt really scared of it as soon as I got over the jump scares. Might just be subjective since I hear people say the exact oposite, but what scared me at the time (ish) was stuff like FEAR where Alma terrorized you, made you feel like you are always watched and messed with but theres nothing you can do about it. Doom 3 was more like, something jumps at you from behind a door, I go "oh you son of a...." then shotgun it in the face and move on. I wouldnt be oposed to trying a new version of Doom 3, but if something really needs a remaster/remake I would much rather it being Quake 4. I find it more fun to play than Doom 3, but while being made in the same engine it doesnt feel like it aged as well as D3 did.
I remember playing Doom 3 on the original Xbox and being terrified by the atmosphere and jumpscares. I played so much and eventually beat it on nightmare. Good times
Doom 3 was how I got back into the franchise believe it or not. At the time, I was a huge fan of Half Life (and sci-fi related themes overall) so when I finally tried it out, I was surprisingly at home. Don't get me wrong, I love the fast paced run and gun experience the other games in the franchise have to offer, but I do wish they revisit what they did with this third installment.
My favorite scifi horror shooter still. Loved the format, the collectibles, codex, and felt Iike it was attempting to make how doom would actually be if it happened in real life.
I'm 41 and was waiting Doom3 around 2005/6 when it came out I was disappointed with 2 things, and so were lots of my friends. It was just a very linear action horror, when we all imagined it would be survival horror (because of the leaked E3 alpha) making flashlight mods didn't help much because it was never intended to begin with. Second thing D3 was obviously a tech test and most of us didn't had the proper videocard to run it yet. Not a matter of expensive or not, but of need. No one else needed this much power to run this good yet.
I want a Doom 3 remaster so bad. I want infinite flashlight and an increase to the base movement speed. All weapons need a beefier audio. Especially the machine gun. And the shotgun needs a much tighter spread.
i feel like 4 things would make a remaster worth it. 1. my biggest issue, and it's also many peoples issue, with the game is that the armour is completely useless and needs to be drastically fixed. even with code being added that armour takes 25% of the damage you receive would work wonders and make it actually useful, and then they can take some of the armour drops out to make it more scarce. as it stands right now, the armour shards and bodies are way too plentiful and by my calculations, only takes about 1% of damage you receive so you can die with still having almost 115 armour left over which is ridiculous 2. some of the enemies like the cacodemon or revenant don't have nearly enough health. they go down way too fast, plus i think when they do show up there needs to be more of them 3. the lighting while great in many places, in some lit areas is still WAY too dark so it should be slightly brightened 4. the screen shake needs to be taken out completely. it's disorienting and makes fighting a crowd too difficult
We used to call this game’ poopy pants’ because it was terrifying when first released. The new/revised character models were insane. A friend of mine could only play this game in 15 minute bursts because it scared him so much 😂
Ray tracing on Doom 3 would be one of the best games to remake. It already relies so much on ambiance and lighting effects that it would make insanely good experience done correctly 👍
No, Doom 1 was never a run-and-gun game. It was a scary action fps game. Both John Romero and John Carmack has stated that they made the game to be scary. Like turning of the lights in a room when you are supposed to get a blue keycard, only to open a door behind the player, to a room filled with monsters. That was an intensional design from Romero to scare players. That you could play Doom 1 as a run-and-gun game however is true, but that was not what the game was designed in mind with.
I disagree, I can literally run and shoot at the speed of light. Not sure how it's not a run and gun shooter. it's kinda fast paced as well. I thought Doom 3 was kinda slower paced than D1/2
@@thetreeofdoom2957 Like I wrote, you can play Doom 1 as a run-and-gun game, but that was not what the game was designed in mind with. Both Romero and Carmack have stated that Doom 1 was made to be scary.
I would argue that original Doom and Doom II were both fast action and horror. The horror aspect has worn off after decades of playing, but the action is still fun as ever. No one has ever made another first person shooter with the sheer speed of Doom.
@@singleproppilot Doom 1 and 2 were never fast pacemaker. They were intended to be scary fps games. One could play them fast paced, but they were not made with that in mind.
It’s a fantastic game. The OG Xbox version was just sensational given what they had to work with. The textures hold up because everything is darkly lit, all part of how they optimised the hell out of the engine and levels to make them as smooth as possible. All time classic, and worthy sequel in my opinion.
Even tough I understand why people says Doom 3 borrows elements from Half-Life, I still find it weird because for a long time I had zero association between those two. I've seen HL1 before I played Doom 3, but experienced it after Doom 3 and still find it hard in my mind to connect them together. What Doom 3 borrowed more from in my opinion is System Shock. I played both System Shock games somewhere in 2016 and it instantly clicked how much it reminded me of Doom 3 with it's audio logs, code hunting, interaction with game world. HL1 had some limited interaction, but not even on the level of Duke Nukem 3D. What people point as same as HL1 is introduction level and monorail level. And both are better in Doom 3. For a question of remastering the game. It already had one. There is no need for another. There is not enough people to appreciate Doom 3 for what it was and still is. For those who like original it's better use dhewm3 source port. For those who hate flashlight swapping, play BFG edition.
Before the ducktape mod, Doom 3 was super scary at the time. Truly next generation graphics. The devs never intended for you to have a flashlight always on. You should try the Doom 3 RTX Remix mod. Never need a flashlight again.
Everything will end up being remastered one day or another, but I'd prefer a loose 'reimagining' over a remaster. As much as I liked the game growing up and even into the BFG edition version, I wouldn't mind a faster version with faster movement, super fast reloads, less darkness, wider areas, and less claustrophobic areas. Basically less emphasis on the survival horror aspect and closer to a traditional gameplay while still being in this particular universe or version. This version will always be around so why not a more speedy version.
You already have all you asked for in Doom 2016. Its art style is very reminiscent of Doom 3, but the mechanics was changed to make the experience more Doom-like instead of the survival horror of its predecessor.
@@Armc31416 Not quite the same. Don't get me wrong, I love Doom 2016, best game of 2016 to me. But a version of Doom 3 like I mentioned would be great. And let's face it, different versions and mods are apart of Dooms legacy anyway so it's not like it's an unusual idea.
As much as I love all things Doom (currently battling through Doom Eternal, and looking forward to Dark Ages), what about Quake? Quake 1 was my first true FPS experience, and I totally loved it. It would be great to see a remake of that awesome IP. I mean the original quake, not the subsequent iteration with the alien invasion (although that was great also).
It really was a forerunner for story focused and atmospheric fps’. The notes in doom 3 were criticized at the time but Bioshock did the same thing and was praised. At the time, Doom 3 was the it game for horror games. Replaying the BFG edition, it was a little too easy and the spawns were predictable. It tried to copy Half Life 2 in its expansion, and of course the sounds for the guns were laughably bad.
14:09 "At times, I think its run & gun heritage hold it back from being a true masterpiece when compared to the more modern environments found in doom3." Can you help me understand this line? It sounds like you mean that the modern (for 2004) level design is at odds with how the series started? (run & gun dos game)
Thanks for the comment… I was more referring to the fact that at time the actual enemy count and spawning locations make some of the tight corridors quite cramped. When it’s being a survival horror game this is fine, but when lots of enemies are in 1 area it can be a challenge.
I honestly think the darkness is what makes this game stand out. Subconsciously, it always reminded me of the what pitch-black darkness feels like in real life. And to be honest, the shadows actually are mostly realistic, because, when you're in a basement and the sun is rarely around or not at all, the shadows are VERY dark, especially with limited light sources. And this limited light source aesthetic makes sense to me when we see the condition of the Mars base. It just makes me think of an obscenely greedy corporation skimping on their lighting systems. In short, that high contrast where shadows are almost always pitch-black. Always loved that aspect of this one. It wouldn't be unique at all otherwise. That would have to be considered in raytracing. It made the bump-mapped textures feel like they had more depth than they did. That highly engineered, Battletech meets Final Fantasy: The Spirits within aesthetic is so dang good.
Doom 3 is the only Doom game I care for these days. The original 2 are iconic for sure, but they're also kinda crap. The new games lean too much into the frantic run & gun style for my taste. Id would probably counter that BFG Edition was the remaster. That's a pity as it changed the gameplay too much. But it is there and available on all platforms nonetheless. I don't think the original look of classic games should be changed too much, but it's a difficult balance. Quake and Quake 2 went too far, Tomb Raider was just about right. There wasn't much wrong with the original Doom 3.
They could have stayed true to the mechanics of Doom 3 by keeping the sequel's similar. I remember finishing work buying doom 3 and £20s worth of jazz cabbage and toking to the game with zero disappointment. Not only doe's it need a remastered version it also needs new doom's that keep the same style.
Doom 3 and Doom 3 BFG are open source… you don’t need a remaster when source ports like Dhewm3 and RBdoom3bfg exist for free. I haven’t tried the bfg port but dhewm3 is really fantastic and runs perfectly on modern OSs
I love this game, and I love that you're the first youtuber I've encountered who doesn't judge me for preferring the BFG edition. So many people act like you're a heretic for enjoying the mounted flashlight, but I don't get it, it seems completely subjective to me. People try to make the argument that the handheld flashlight was what the developers originally intended, but that's not even true, John Carmack himself stated the flashlight thing was an engine and hardware limitation and that people would probably enjoy his game more if they could actually see it. BFG edition definitely makes some sacrifices when it comes to sound and lighting that you may want to fix with mods, but for my money I like my Doom to be more fast paced. I've played normal Doom 3, I like that BFG makes me feel a bit more like a badass who has things under control. It's also more immersive, which is something I really do care about. I always thought a space marine whacking demons in the face with a flashlight was silly, and I still do. A futuristic soldier should have a mounted light, it just makes sense, though really they should probably also have thermal optics or something in their helmet. I'm not the biggest fan of survival horror, I like horror shooters more, and the awesome horror ambience and vibe of Doom 3 is still pretty well preserved in BFG, it still gives me goosebumps and I still sometimes gasp when a pinky suddenly appears from a closet right next to me. One thing I'll add is Doom 3 is awesome with mods, this includes the BFG edition. My favorite thing to do with mods is to make the shotgun spread narrower, so that it behaves like an actual shotgun. Having to get right up in an Imp's face to kill them with a shotgun is just no fun to me, I want to blow dudes away from down a corridor like a badass with a real military grade shotgun. Can't recommend doing this enough. It does make you rely on the shotgun way more the the game wants you to, but it's fun and it doesn't make other weapons obsolete, just more situational. For cramped corridors on Mars I think spending 50-70% of your time with a shotgun is fitting.
It doesn't need a remaster, it has source ports and 20 years of mods. There's nothing that an increased polycount and smooth shadows can do to improve it, the low res normal maps and sharp shadows on low poly level geo looks timeless imo
Doom 3 is open source. Add some generic ray tracing code to it and you already get 50% of remaster done with 1 weekend. And for darkness problem I would just quickly implement IDBEHOLDL cheat from Doom 1 and bind it to hotkey to quickly toggle on and off. To be honest I would really like to see how maps would look like with IDBEHOLDL cheat from Doom 1 because there are a lot of things that say hidden in the dark that you never see how they really look like.
Hello. Yes, Doom3 needs a reboot, I do agree with your comments. 1. Raytracing would be great. 2. Less full dark areas should be reduced. 3. Monster multiple teleporting is annoying, the same as in Doom2016. 4. More open spaces needed, as in original Dooms. With enhanced monster intelligence it would be great. 5. Maybe a map or something similar would help gameplay. P.S. I'm still playing doom3 and Fear... Doom eternal game mechanic is good, but the environment is totally un-realistic, it feel clearly a game, while doom3 is scifi and 'believable', including the player who is still a normal human being. Looking fwd for a reboot. Best regards !
If they do remaster it they should do the 2004 version. The BFG division crammed in more demons but I feel that detracted from the experience rather than added, and some of the sections that were added felt like padding.
I will definitely cover Prey in the future. I remember the plot being a bit unhinged but the gameplay pretty good. It’s certainly been a while. I have it boxed somewhere…
man I have to disagree hard on ray tracing improving this game's look. The lighting is impressive partly because its unrealstic, it gives it a very specific look and they use the lighting they have very artistically. the harsh shadows are important for this game and I think slapping ray tracing would really take away from it. but great video as usual.
makes sense, agree on most part, but I really don't think ray tracing will make this game better - doom 3's style of rendering looks realistic, but it's actually carefully crafted and tweaked for the gameplay purpose - you really need that pure darkness and highly contrasted lighting/shadow to maintain the intended experience, with ray tracing, light will bleed everywhere and destroy the look and feel and the functional side of the light/shadows in the original game. Also, ray tracing is really making every modern game looks all the same and boring due to its accuracy in myy opinion.
I was so sad when they released that last port of it. It looks great in 4K, but it's still the BFG edition And that addition in general, I think just looks worse than the original. It doesn't have that same impressive lighting, because they purposely make a lot of the game brighter. I get them switching the flashlight mechanic around, but to also just make the rest of the game brighter alongside it really ruins a lot of the atmosphere IMO Never mind the fact that they changed other things like the amount of ammunition you pick up ETC For me though, I do really miss that flashlight mechanic. I thought that added so much tension, and in situations where you couldn't use it and it was still dark, just the muzzle flash would light up the environment in a way that few other games ever replicated, once again including even the BFG edition of this game I'll stop complaining now, I just miss it lol
You have some really valid points here... I didn't have time to cover it in the video but at times it feels like the BFG edition went a little too far in trying to recapture the Doom 1/2 vibe with extra ammo and so forth. Do I personally think it's a bad decision - I don't know... I know some people who love the original, but I know others who would never play the original until the BFG version so arguably it did open up the audience a bit more.
A Doom 3 remake needs the endless, identical, office levels re-envisioned. I would rip out the third person cinematics and tell the story completely in first person. Hell was really cool but the end boss fight was lame so fix that too.
Doom 3 needs a remake because it's gameplay and levels are total ass as far as AI and weapons go, but the audio and art style are just fantastic... It's also not a scary game either. I have a $3500 OLED TV and $1500 sound system hooked up to my PC and playing Doom 3 on those the lighting and sound is just next level even over modern games. Modern games might have high fidelity textures and models but they always put little effort into the lights and atmosphere of a game like we used to get with Fear, Doom 3 and Halo CE/3. Also not going to watch BFG Edition gameplay so I only made it 2 minutes in sorry.
OG Doom 3 works fine on modern hardware. Just use dhewm3, slap Redux and maybe other mods and you will have an experience way better than any remaster will be able to offer. Console peasants are stuck with the BFG edition, sorry guys.
I wouldn't say the originals are any better, they have never gotten a true official HD texture pack or HD sprites, the console versions and there levels are only available through mods and emulation again no official release, and the demon's cut from Doom 64 have never been restored or added back in, again things the DOOM64.CE mod has done, i don't think any of the classic 90's FPS games have had this treatment it's always mods that come to the rescue.
The " worst " Doom game that still is, one of the best action-horror FPS of all times. This, F.E.A R. and Return to Castle Wolfenstein need to get a proper remake. EDIT: To be clear I mean remake, because I would like to see the same treatment Dead Space got.
Doom 3 was a much more enjoyable experience for me than the newer versions
I remember showing this game off to my friends on the PC me and my Dad built. We we're blown away by the lighting, and frankly it still looks great to this day.
Same here. My pc even struggled at times w it haha
Doom 3 still looks good. Some of the textures could use a facelift, but the lighting and shadows still look great.
Increase texture resolution, add some bounce lighting (just a touch) give the crybabies a light on the gun as an option, that's all ya need here
You can mod it to improve graphics on regular version on PC. BFG Edition is not mod-able. I remember doing it like 7-8 years ago making it look like a PS4 game.

I beat the doom 3 on release back in 2004. Doom Eternal gameplay is massively superior. Doom 3 is just nostalgic.

@cybergothika6906 In Doom3, you are locked in Hell with those monsters. In the other Doom's, the monsters are locked in Hell with you.
The monster teleporting in mechanic was done more to save frame rate than to scare the player. They did their best to make this teleporting in scary, but there wasn't much they could do about making it less predictable after a while.

@@azordash_games It does feature bullet time. Gameplay-wise, I think it's a lot more solid, and it's overall more concise than the original Doom 3.
Ahem, Herr Peter, Resurrection of Evil is not a DLC. It was distributed on physical CD-ROMs. DLC are, by definition, downloadable.
@@AlexeiVoronin You are technically correct that it's more correct to refer to RoE as an expansion pack but at this juncture, it's just semantics more than anything else.
I absolutely love Doom 3. I also love Quake 4. Both are seriously underrated and underappreciated.
I need to go back to Quake 4 properly… I went back to it briefly for my Quake 1 video and it felt pretty dated, but I only really played the first 20 minutes. The graphics looked great though to be fair.
@@azordash_games please make a video for Quake 4 it need more attention, for me I loved more than doom 3.
Stencil shadows might be a little bit odd looking for todays standards, but shaders and sounds are execllent, especially with HD texture pack
Actually, Doom 3 already got a remaster. It's called "BFG Edition" and was released in 2012.
We did get it. The BFG edition. I love Doom 3 for what it was, and what they presented. I even DLed the E3 beta at one point.
The bfg edition absolutely destroyed the atmosphere for me from the additional lighting and shoulder flashlight
BFG edition is garbage
Doom3 was my favorite Doom, Doom was always supposed to be scary but the tech of the time of the originals just didn't allow for it. to be properly realized.
Doom 64 was the first one that was scary for me. You could see that it was a big inspiration on Doom 64. That and the haunting PSX soundtrack for the PlayStation port of Doom. Doom 3 was only the logical evolution for the series if you ask me.
Hands down the best feature to me is the sound design. Critical for the atmosphere and absolutely terrifying.
It should be remastered with Capcom's RE Engine 👀
Or better yet, the Doom Eternal engine.
doom 3 was the only game of all the doom game that sent chills down my spine and the moment where the jump scares did it well to giving it the horror feel to it.
So glad I wasn’t attached to Doom when this came out. Fantastic action-horror.
For me, this is better than the two recent ones. Hope we get a sequel to this continuity
We need a better remaster for the VR port. a Native one with manual reloads and stuff would be huge!
Still my favorite doom game. Right there with you, hope we get a modern remaster
I still have my original PC copy of Doom 3. I have many great PC games all on their CDs. I miss that era of PC gaming before console came out.
Brought back some good memories. Thanks! Great video btw. : )
Cheers for the kind words!
I really should get a VR set for my PS4, so I could experience this. So thanks for confirming that it is a great experience.
What, like a Kex Engine upgrade? and a new expansion? That could be pretty cool, Nightdive will probably get around to it eventually.
I would pay full price for this.
The original D3 was DEFINITELY survival horror. It was FAR more stingy with ammo pickups. There were many times I was reminded of resident evil and fearing I would run out of ammo. They also took out pretty big sections of many levels. I think the original was honestly way better than BFG edition.
Doom 3, the original prey, Riddick butcher bay, and F.E.A.R. were my jam back in those days.
You sure it wasn't a problem on your side? I was planning to get it on Steam...
Good times
You should try this in VR. It works so well that it seems well ahead of its time.
I wish they turn off the screen shaking and implement muzzle flash in the BFG edition
I want a Doom 3 remaster so bad. I want infinite flashlight and an increase to the base movement speed. All weapons need a beefier audio. Especially the machine gun. And the shotgun needs a much tighter spread.
i feel like 4 things would make a remaster worth it.
1. my biggest issue, and it's also many peoples issue, with the game is that the armour is completely useless and needs to be drastically fixed. even with code being added that armour takes 25% of the damage you receive would work wonders and make it actually useful, and then they can take some of the armour drops out to make it more scarce. as it stands right now, the armour shards and bodies are way too plentiful and by my calculations, only takes about 1% of damage you receive so you can die with still having almost 115 armour left over which is ridiculous
2. some of the enemies like the cacodemon or revenant don't have nearly enough health. they go down way too fast, plus i think when they do show up there needs to be more of them
3. the lighting while great in many places, in some lit areas is still WAY too dark so it should be slightly brightened
4. the screen shake needs to be taken out completely. it's disorienting and makes fighting a crowd too difficult
I always wanted to see a DOOM 3 x Quake 4 crossover. Either in a shared universe or through a multi verse.
We used to call this game’ poopy pants’ because it was terrifying when first released. The new/revised character models were insane. A friend of mine could only play this game in 15 minute bursts because it scared him so much 😂
This definitely needs an official RTX version and an official Quest version.
Ray tracing on Doom 3 would be one of the best games to remake. It already relies so much on ambiance and lighting effects that it would make insanely good experience done correctly 👍
My favourite of all the Dooms and I played it through to completion after playing Doom 2016
Thats very true doom 1 and especially Doom 64 where truly the precursors from a evolution standpoint of what would become Doom 3
D3 is a masterpiece. There are graphics mods that enhance it, along with many other great custom mods, maps, episodes..
Didnt even watch the clip before I gave a thumbs up
It's a magazine, not a clip
14:09 "At times, I think its run & gun heritage hold it back from being a true masterpiece when compared to the more modern environments found in doom3."
Can you help me understand this line? It sounds like you mean that the modern (for 2004) level design is at odds with how the series started? (run & gun dos game)
Thanks for the comment… I was more referring to the fact that at time the actual enemy count and spawning locations make some of the tight corridors quite cramped. When it’s being a survival horror game this is fine, but when lots of enemies are in 1 area it can be a challenge.
I haven’t played Doom Eternal, but Doom 3 is my favourite game in the series.
It deserve a pure remaster, without TAA or other tecniques that remove its crispness
Given it's the 20th Anniversary, I REALLY thought we would see a remaster of the original this year. Guess not....
I mostly agree, for me original game was too dark at times. Also is my favorite Doom game.
I really think doom 3 will revive the nightdive remaster for quakecon next year
I love this game, and I love that you're the first youtuber I've encountered who doesn't judge me for preferring the BFG edition.
If they wait long enough they could make a remake with path tracing instead of ray tracing.
We need a doom project brutality like and without disappearing bodies
I must admit I was shocked even on the PC version that many of the bodies disappeared! Probably hard coded into the game engine I suspect.
A doom 3 remake on UE5 would be amazing
Both Doom3 and Quake 4 need to be remastered. A REAL remaster and not that fake shit they did with Doom 3 BFG Edition.
If they do remaster it they should do the 2004 version. The BFG division crammed in more demons but I feel that detracted from the experience rather than added, and some of the sections that were added felt like padding.
BFG edition didnt add any sections
I hope you do 2006's Prey next.
I’ll meet you half way… a toggle for classic or ray traced 🤗
@@azordash_games as a rule I'm never fully against anything I can turn off so.... Deal
This is still very modern game. No remaster is needed.
Doom 3 deserves a face lift, but not in the direction the BFG edition did.
The BFG edition is objectively the worst way to play the game.
Doom 3 is amazing 👏 🤩 I'm getting tired of the remasters/remakes but gotta say, some games I'm still here for it
makes sense, agree on most part, but I really don't think ray tracing will make this game better - doom 3's style of rendering looks realistic, but it's actually carefully crafted and tweaked for the gameplay purpose - you really need that pure darkness and highly contrasted lighting/shadow to maintain the intended experience, with ray tracing, light will bleed everywhere and destroy the look and feel and the functional side of the light/shadows in the original game. Also, ray tracing is really making every modern game looks all the same and boring due to its accuracy in myy opinion.
I was so sad when they released that last port of it. It looks great in 4K, but it's still the BFG edition
And that addition in general, I think just looks worse than the original. It doesn't have that same impressive lighting, because they purposely make a lot of the game brighter. I get them switching the flashlight mechanic around, but to also just make the rest of the game brighter alongside it really ruins a lot of the atmosphere IMO
Never mind the fact that they changed other things like the amount of ammunition you pick up ETC
For me though, I do really miss that flashlight mechanic. I thought that added so much tension, and in situations where you couldn't use it and it was still dark, just the muzzle flash would light up the environment in a way that few other games ever replicated, once again including even the BFG edition of this game
I'll stop complaining now, I just miss it lol
We DON'T need remaster/remake games. They're so bad. Just using mod, graphictard.
OG Doom 3 works fine on modern hardware. Just use dhewm3, slap Redux and maybe other mods and you will have an experience way better than any remaster will be able to offer.
Console peasants are stuck with the BFG edition, sorry guys.
Doom 3 will forever be my favorite Doom!!!
Doom 3 was a masterpiece, and personally my favorite.
Remaster/remake fans trying to not destroying good games (IMPOSSIBLE CHALLENGE)
Doom 3 is still my favorite Doom game. I rather have a sequel of Doom 3 than a remaster.
Doom 3 really needs a true remaster
No, you don't need. Graphics are overrated and cringe.
@nic-usormost9400 The graphics still look pretty good today tbh, more like underrated and beautiful.
@@jasperfox6821 idc, graphics ruining good games.
@@nic-usormost9400 You can't appreciate good games.
@@jasperfox6821 Remaste/remake games are never be a good games
I just wish they would release the real doom 3 on modern consoles even if it's not a remaster. The BFG edition is garbage for many reasons
Doom 3 only makes sense when played in VR
It was my favorite Doom game.
Doom 3 needs a series x update and so does Doom 2016.
The " worst " Doom game that still is, one of the best action-horror FPS of all times. This, F.E.A R. and Return to Castle Wolfenstein need to get a proper remake. EDIT: To be clear I mean remake, because I would like to see the same treatment Dead Space got.
needs a REMAKE more than anything.
People still calling DooM 2016 a reboot? That's wild (and stupid)
