This is what people who didn't go to college say.

Appreciate the insight Carter! As a prospectus student, I'm interested in the drawings you mentioned (biomorphic/geomorphic and rectilinear) that you mentioned and how it played a role in informing your design process. Could you maybe do a video on what it's about?

This is so relatable. I finished my bachelors in architecture and I faced the exact same issues during my college days. I guess its the same case with any design course.

This is the exact information tutors must tell every student in the very first meeting of every course at college. Very helpful

Hi Carter, it's great connecting with you. I'm from Vietnam and I'm studying landscape architecture. As a third year student, I realized that this major is meaningful, I mean for the relationship between mother nature and human. But, I consider that I am a dreamer or not.

It just all depends if you’re passionate about the field or not. I’m a senior currently at WVU. For people who say it’s a lot of time and it’s not manageable it is not true, I’ve worked almost full time the past four years and still managed time for school, work and a social life. As for it being expensive that is true freshman year it was 500 dollars in pencils, trace paper and so on. But after that everything was on computer. It’s like any other major, if you like it it’ll be easy. If not then it’ll suck!

Hi Carter! Your videos are extremely helpful to me. I have graduated from school this year and have plans to study LA next winter (I‘m from Europe). I was wondering if there is anything I could do to prepare myself better for the impending stress and work load? I‘ve been drawing for a long time now and I also have a huge interest in plants/nature already, which I believe are great foundations for this field. Still, are there any other things to learn/practice in order to have a smoother experience? I‘ve got a gap year now, which I am currently planning out to make the best of it. Would love to hear your input! Also, aside from that I was wondering how the male to female ratio is in this kind of field? Is there a large gender pay gap? (You may not know about Europe, but what‘s your experience?) Greetings from Germany.

All very good points Carter, the profession is not easy and its not for the faint of heart, if you're a wimp try music appreciation instead. I remember being in the studio on Saturdays when most of the student body was at a home football game in the stadium while me and 15 of my classmates were hard at work doing design and construction drawings (utilities, highways, drainage ways, parking lots, golf courses, etc.) or building those topographic models as you mentioned, I got to hate cardboard after awhile. Also you need to develop that thick skin because your designs will be critiqued by professors and fellow students, but as you said its just a matter of opinion unless you did something egregiously wrong. Regarding working on a team, its challenging, but my 44 year career put me on numerous teams of 8-10 professionals from a myriad of fields who were all dedicated to producing quality work for the public and I learned a lot every day from those people. By the way, you can make 6$$$ figures in this profession, just work hard and wisely. Thanks Carter, good video.

Thanks for these informative videos. Taking the long road to earning my associates in L.A. . With a full time job , I’m learning on the side, but with that said, there’s one caveat that’s making me from making a full time plunge and that’s “Pay scale”. There’s a lack of salary information on a majority of job postings for Landscape Designers and Landscape Architects. What is a typical starting wage in your experience (regions pay differ) and what does a typical L.A. further along in their career make?

Thank you for sharing! Landscape architecture is definitely intense. Needs passion for this career.

I’m at the point in which I’m looking at several different majors, architecture was my original idea it’s the field that combines math and art, which are the two things I’m best at, but then landscape caught my eye, specially because I’ve always loved parks and gardens, so now I’m stuck in between the two, hopefully I can choose in the two weeks I have left

Sheesh. Great video! Any recommendations for outsiders joining this field from another industry?

Hi, so I'm a 19 year old girl, that still don't know what to pursue in the future. I've seen both of your videos about why I SHOULD and SHOULDN'T become a landscape architect, but I'm still not quite sure. I suffer from severe social anxiety, and I'm not the best at math, but I'm very creative and would like to make a difference for the environment (I like to learn about plants especially and have throughout my school years been interested in climate change and so on..)

Hey carter, great videos. I have been thinking about studying this field and have done a good amount of landscaping work but have absolutely 0 drawing/sketching or graphic design skills. Did you have any before you started? Is it something that is taught along the way? Are there any books or courses you could recommend that could reach a beginner from scratch? Huge thanks and continue the good work!
