After flying for 30 hours as a student pilot and seeing just how expensive renting an aircraft is (especially long-term and how its not cost-effective) I've recently started looking at budget planes (and kits) for roughly $20k or less, that I would be able to afford to fly just about every day. I also have a deep interest in the Yamaha engines and their conversions for aircraft due to their incredibly low cost for a DIY build, and their good power to weight ratio. As a pretty large guy, I would need an engine that is as light as possible but also has a good amount of power output. Oh, and I prefer 4-stroke over 2-stroke. So I've been following a few of you builders & pilots lately that are flying or planning on flying with Yamaha engines, and I've even joined the group on FB. I've narrowed my potential choices based on my budget and mission down to the Zenith CH-701 & CH-750, and the Chinook Plus 2-4-stroke/DR and SJ/DR. I'm really digging that simple construction of the Chinook and the plexiglass cabin that would give fantastic visibility. What really took me by surprise though with the Chinook , specifically the Plus-2 4-stroke variant, is the fact it has a bit of a higher useful load than the Zenith, which would be very marginal for me, especially the 701. I imagine the upcoming SJ model of the Chinook will have an even higher useful load. The aircraft and engine combo you have is pretty much what I need for my current situation; A cheap, affordable, cost-effective, and straight-up fun time-builder. So I'll definitely be following your progress with this like a hawk! Keep up the great work!
I am looking forward to the rest of this series . I’ve been looking for a used chinook ! I probably will just buy a new kit . I will be putting a 912 uls I already got and GRT avionics and 22 inch bush wheels . I like the moving map and terrain features .
Just a side note here, love your value hanger - it has to be the ultimate, especially the tricky, expensive bit, the doors. A great lateral solution, or maybe that should be downward solution!
I have enjoyed this series and cannot wait to see the finished plane. I have always wanted to fly but now on a fixed budget and don't know if I can afford it. I like the kitfox planes very much but don't have time to assemble one. Pilots license first I guess.
I been looking at the Chinook kits for a while. I talked to John at the factory and I’m waiting for the new SJ model. They should be done testing after the first of the year. Bigger wing, tail and the frame is stronger. It has the Cub Style gear. I will go with the 912 80hp. But I think it can handle the 100hp 912is. I want the fuel injection. He is working on a flap setup also. I think he said the new Flaps will work on the old wing like you have. You may want to give John a call before you reinvent the wheel. I think he has been flying the new flap wing... You may be able to just order flaps for your Chinook.. I will be watching
You'r back :-) Hope to see you and your dad fly and enjoy this budget plane soon . Keep us informed . BTW I like the budget part. A real plane for a "low" budget . Don't change too much at one time, when you started to look at the cabin frame and say its just kind of a shell I got afraid you also start to cut all those tubes and make a glass/carbon shell instead LOL.
I don't remember if there was any information regarding the cost of the Yamaha Phazer engine. When you have time would you be able to give a rough estimate of the cost for going that route? Thanks in advance!
Hi Ian! At any point will you have the covering off of the wings? I have an 85 W11 Chinook that is getting all of the same mods you're planning but I want to upgrade to the 2S style wing and id like to copy yours if you'll have the structure exposed. Looking forward to more updates on your project
I’m looking at doing push pull for ailerons and elevator no bell cranks . It works great on my jabiru. And the geometry works out well . Same as the elevator push pull and elevator trim . That’s my plan what ya think ?
The videos are behind my progress and I’ve been working on something along those lines. I’m not sure if the engine mount or controls video will come out next but you’ll see what I’m doing in one of the next two videos.
Actually I misread your comment. I’m sticking with pull pull but changing up the system. It can work well, it just needs some help. I’d prefer all pushrods but it would be difficult on this plane.
The system on the jabiru is simplistic but functions well ya I fly a jabiru . I also am thinking about using the jab elevator trim set up . I’m looking forward to see your set up
It’s an hour or two with two people who don’t know what they’re doing. It’s not hard, but there’s a lot of “you hold this, I’ll go get this tool and turn this bolt. Nothing self supports.
The rockhopper is suffering from the unique problem of not fitting in my shop anymore! we’re working on space to get back to it but until I have space it remains on the back burner.
have you done the yamaha 4 stroke motor on any other plane and how does it work. i would like to contact you either phone or e-mail if i could. i have a chinook with a 503
This will be my first. They’ve flown on a few other similar planes. Kolbs and what not. Email me at contact@camerawings.com and I’ll give you my number for a call.
This is a neat project. The Chinook has a lot of promise. You have the right aircraft for the time. Good luck.
I have wanted one for a while and this one came along at just the right point for me to make a move and acquire it.
I have been waiting for the progress report. It is going in a good way.
Sweet! Glad to see more budget aircraft videos showing up. 👍👍👍

Thanks and good luck with whatever you go with.
Keep up the progress Ian, looking forward to seeing your installation and how much of a performance improvement you will be seeing.
This is going to be awesome to follow! Thanks Ian for good music and a great video!

Brilliant, awesome series to come!
These are bad ass airplanes that aren’t talked about much.

They’re a disaster frankly but a friend is letting me store things in there currently so I’m not going to complain.

Take care of essentials first but if it’s a dream, start looking at unusual options like gliders or light sport and go chase that dream!
Lookin good Ian!

Do you know what the price would be for the SJ?
@@johnnyboythepilot4098 not sure yet. Depends on if you want the 582 or 912. Big difference in price there
Nice! You left the wings! Where did the plane come from and where did it go? Budget bushplane is the magic words.
I bought the plane locally but found it on barnstormers. It’s remained in Houston and will stay based here as long as I own it and live here.

I am working it. Have most of it in Solid orks now.
Looks great but I see that this wont be doing any tail touch in hover. Keep up the great work and am looking forward to more videos.

All the costs will be covered as the series goes on.
@4:39 dragstrip launch mode in the background.
How wide is the cockpit at the pilots shoulders?

I’m not sure if I’ll have all of the covering off any time soon. Maybe bits and pieces but I don’t want to recover all of it right now.

How long did it take to disassemble the wings? Roughly curious as to takedown time for transportation.

Yessss!!!
Are there any updates?
Looking at new kits. Is there a difference in structure on the 2 cycle VS 4 cycle kit?
Engine mount is the only difference I’m aware of. That may not be correct though.
I know you are just taking it apart now. BUT! I was just wondering if you were going to get a BOM Wing Mounted ADAHRS?
I’d really like to for a secondary pitot/static system to back up my main instruments for testing. Will have to see if it’s in the budget.
Run that bad boy as main instruments imho.
My concern is heat in an iPad. Here in Texas they overheat frequently so I’d rather not rely on one.
@@ianslife210 you planning on leaving it in the chinook full time? I dont see it being a problem while in use. Always have your phone as a backup!
Hi Ian ...what would one sell for 2nd hand ....are thy hard to find?
Regards Alex
The engine or the airplane?
The hanger doors bit of a pain??
Very much yes!
Are u going to do all the Dan Reynolds mods , wing, tail, fuse, gear flaps etc? In my mind that's the real potential with these,
Then or my own take on them eventually.
Just curious, why do you start new projects without finishing ones that have already been started?
The rockhopper is suffering from the unique problem of not fitting in my shop anymore! we’re working on space to get back to it but until I have space it remains on the back burner.
@@ianslife210 Thanks! I personally am great at the teardowns, it's the putting stuff back together I struggle with! I love your channel!
Have you finished the Budget Bushplane?
Will you get a Culver Prop?
Negative. Already bought a Luga for it.
Where is RockHopper, episode 11 🤔
Why ?
Any chance you’d ever consider selling your RANS😉
It may be up for sale to facilitate a new purchase soon depending on how things go.
IansLife please let me know if you ever sell it! My email is Hailintruman@gmail.com.
would have been nice if you told everyone in the beginning what you were doing.
I could use that 582....
Already sold it off to help fund the rest of the project!

I got an idea for your gas tanks Air Command Seat Tank
You know I just can’t get into the idea of sitting in a gas tank. I also don’t think they’ll have the capacity I want.
Too bad you can't fly it home. Why not? KJZI
Too bad I live in the city, I’d love to fly it to my shop!
