A top ten list of longest lasting games would be cool! As in games that lasted the longest on the top 100.
A list of the games that entered the top 100 would be soooo interesting!
I’d love to see another top 100 data analysis video again with chris for this year
Thank you for being one of the first people ANYWHERE to explain just how many games are in your played/rated list that you factor into these top 100s.
Good discussions too, again thank you.
This list, Etherfields and 7th Continent in particular, raises a possible split in what a “top game” actually is.
Is it the game you want to play right now? That seems to be the DT top list approach.
Or is it the game that, at its peak, was the best game to play?
It’s important because a lot of these games are excellent for a long time for regular people who only play a few games a month but they’ll never make the top lists of people who play frequently and can exhaust games faster.
Just a thought.
Exactly what I thought. If you list the best games, then it doesn't really matter if you explore all the options and don't feel like playing it anymore or not. If a game is one of the best, it's one of the best, as simple as that.
But if the list is of favorite games at the moment, it is a completely different thing, and sometimes I feel like these two get mixed up and bundled together on this top 100 games listings.
@@AahzmandusPervect But these lists are deeply subjective, so how much you want to play them right now is the best thing to go by. Especially when they make a new Top 100 every single year. It's not meant to be an unchanging museum for games you once enjoyed years ago. Pandemic Legacy is the perfect example for that. At the time, it felt revolutionary and we enjoyed it, but is it something I'm excited to play right now? Absolutely not.
It also means that a game that manages to stay on these lists truly has staying power. Instead of it taking a pointless spot "out of respect for it", it's actually still being played today (mine would be Dominion).
They make it very clear that it's personal, not an Oscar for boardgames. I watch these videos for entertainment only.
Interesting you mention Earth whilst talking about Terraforming Mars. I'm really excited to receive my copy of that one
Tom please do a list that compares your first top 100 to the current top 100 and where those games are for you today I think that would be very interesting to watch
Thanks for this Tom. It's Interesting to see the ones that have dropped off.
Me: Wanna play Terraforming Mars?
Tom: Sure! Or... We could play Ark Nova.
Me: Nah, I'm not really in the mood for a solo game.
Amazing...
Why did you suggest TM then?
Yea, TM has just a shiver of more interaction than AN, granted I have not played TM with all of the expansions. Somewhat similar games, but AN takes the win for me for it's perfect implementation of the theme.
@@mikaeki5245 definitely disagree with this, drafting in terraforming mars is a ton of player interaction
@@Shuckleking87 If you are punching each other for cards I guess. Otherwise it's just a small almost not working bs random fixing mechanism. Hansa teutonica, sons of anarchy, tigris and euphratis got tons of player interaction. TM is almost a solitaire.
I can truly appreciate what these games did for the industry. Bloodrage, Anachrony, Terraforming Mars, Paladins, Architects, 7th continent. I haven't gotten to play The Great Wall yet. It gets delivered this Friday.
Hey Tom, what are all the games that have fallen off your top 100 list since you began, that later got back onto it?
The only ones I really balked at were Architects and Lorenzo dropping off. These are both in my top 10 I would say. Glen More II is really great too but I need to explore it a bit more to decide where it fits
Blood Rage, Etherfields and Lorenzo are all like, top 20 games for me, Tom and I are diverging!
Anachrony, Marco Polo and Terraforming Mars are also top 100 games for me.
Interesting having Architects as top 10, I think that might be one of (for me) the worst worker placements games I’ve played, and I’ve played looots
I got Glen More 2 because I loved the game so much but I’m honestly after a few plays not yet sold on that chaotic chronicles board. Have yet to try any modules though… still a great game
I love it. The playgroups I teach are always newbies but I'll play with the chronicles some day.
Playing as many new games as you guys play each year, I would be surprised if you didn't have 15ish new games on the list. Literally hundreds of games each year. Just makes sense that some of them would crack the top 100.
Most games released are mediocre games with not much new, or improved things. I personally play a lot of new games per year, and I can tell you that last year there were 3 games that actually made me go "wow, this game was good!". If I would make a top 100 list there would maybe be few new games on the list, and some of those would likely totally replace an older game even very high on the list.
If I would have a say, I would play a lot fewer new games per year, but such is life in a social hobby like board gaming, you need to play mediocre games that some other people like.
What application do you use to create a top 100 list from your immense collection? Is it a head to head voting application? Thanks for the great content!
Lorenzo still in my top, in spite of "newer" games doing better what it's doing. Simple because it was one of my first crush :). I think nostalgia plays a great role in my own choices.
Ark Nova, the same feeling as TM. Interesting. I guess there are some similarities, but TM gives me the feeling of constant progress. AN there were a lot of nothing turns.
Also, with scores like -48 to -42 to 4 are kinda off-putting. All that time spent, and the winner has 4 points.
For me, I've never understood why many prefer games that score in the hundreds, feeling they've accomplished more. If I score something like 328p, I usually have zero sense of how to improve my game, making the score feel very hallow for me. But if I score in the tens, I have a much more palpable feel of what I did right or wrong (eg. Glass Road, where you typically score 25-35p).
Ark Novas point system is very good. If scores were like you listed, you instantly see one player played significantly better than others. And since AN is a race game, you can asses if you spent too much time on unnecessary actions.
@@mikaeki5245 i hate the scoring system for sure. I'd rather lose 50 to 100 than -48 to 4... The game is telling me I'm so bad i didn't even score a single point.
@@mikaeki5245 but the worst part for me is the wasted turns. In TM, I'm taking two, three, four, or more actions every turn. But, if i have to just reset my actions or take the third action that is like to take, it feels like a waste.
@@mikaeki5245 and yes, those were two scores of my first game of AN. I was the -48.
What games replaced Lorenzo?
Should I buy Blood Rage? I was planning to buy it for some time now, any recommendations?
Hello all, would someone be able to clarify what App Tom is referring to for Terraforming Mars? Thanks so much!
He’s just talking about the iOS version of Terraforming Mars. It’s a good implementation of the board game. Often goes on sale. It’s the same as the Steam version
We played 7th continent.... The opening mission took three sessions. It just kept going and going. At one point i think we wandered into another quest for a while. We finished but that experience killed the game for us
I completely understand why Anachrony fell off the top 100. I always want to play it more than my ability to pull everything out and get it setup for solo. Still disappointing that it's no longer that high.
Maybe Roll Player will come back in now when there is an app :)
I don't get Tom's dislike of the Anachrony big box. I wonder has he actually tried to play it since it was added to the library? It makes setup so much quicker. You just whip out the required trays and you're good to go.
Since you started keeping track, what game has lasted the longest in your top 100? What game lasted the longest in your top ten?
Those would be the champions.
Maybe do a top ten of the longest lasting games.
Surprised Awkward Guests dropped off the list. It's so hard to find good games at the five and six player count that don't take three to four hours. This is one of the few
I am really sad, that Innovation is not in the Top100.. I am always surprised how it felt off over the years for most part!:o
Innovation is still so good. Really good a t 2 players.
Can you do a top games of their genre for you, zee and Mike? I know it's subjective, but all top 10s are. I'm just curious.
Nice to have a list of the games Tom now considers hot garbage, I'll be avoiding these at all costs!
Give me the bottom 100. I enjoy seeing people in pain and tears.
Hearing Tom Vasel use the word ratchet is enough to watch this video.
I feel like that meme from Mean Girls: stop trying to make ratchet happen.
It’s also weird because those mechanisms already have names. Like in Glen More that’s just a time track and a rondel.
LOL! Yes, that is so fetch! Haha.
I do worry a little that it’s a confusing term for people that don’t follow the channel closely - it isn’t very self explanatory
Yeah I had no idea what he meant. Still don't.
I was always confused because that is not how a racket works. It slowly clicks down one way then all at once pull back the other. It would a mech like place workers on track going down then resolve in reverse order. Like a snake draft but with actions.
So what are the "complete utter trash" -games that drop out from your top 200? 😁
Damn i am only at 650 played games...basically a noob
Awkward Guests fell flat for me. Not nearly enough player interaction or excitement. Just a bunch of players looking down and trying to solve a puzzle. I solved it and it still wasn't that exciting.
Yes, it's a much better version of Clue but is that saying much?
I think it can be really group dependent, with the card trading and trying to figure out what info people have and need and trying to give them useless stuff without giving them repeats, so they'll still trade with you. Again, group dependent.
@@soogymoogi Yeah, I imagine most games are. Another thing, is it's pretty tedious to setup and put away (the price you pay for its near infinite variability).
Awkward Guests is not even much of a deduction game. You can hardly deduce anything, because anything can be anything, and unless you see a information which tells you it's not possibly, it is possibly. So all you do is pass around cards and cross off options you see in those cards. Horrible deduction game.
The great Wall higher than Terraforming Mars... ok. No more confident at all in all that Top :) And 7th continent.
Hey at least 1 view now!
Terraforming Mars out ??? NOOOOO WAYYYY !!! Are you crazy man ?
You remind me of that fuzzy head guy from jeopardy. Maybe it's because you're both from Florida...
Top 20 or so games totally not worth playing at all.
There was a point late into Tom’s too hundred where I was worried that Dominion (my #1 game for many many years) somehow fell off his list completely. If you look at the trajectory of 7th Continent (v. different game ofc) it was looking eerily similar. For 7th Continent it went: 3rd, 11th, 24th, off the list. Dominion: 8th, 16th, 25th, but then 2nd 😅
