We used pea straw a couple of years ago in a drought and same result. It smelt like dirt . We put it through the shredder and shred hay on top mixed it up fed it mixed but they would still sort it, bust.
I had a problem with pea straw once. It was pre harvest sprayed with regalone. Cows absolutely refused it. Had a bunch left over, but my feeder calves ate the heck out of it the next year when I was trying to use it for bedding. 🤔🤷♂️ I grow peas now, but don’t spray it before harvest. The cows eat it up pretty good, but is also done with a conventional combine instead of a rotary. More leaf left in it. But they definitely prefer barley straw. Merry Christmas 🤶🎅🏼🎄🎁❄️⛄️🍻👍
Heifer dance😂😂😂. You’re a better/more patient cow man than me. I run hfrs with my mature cows, then train them to come into a separate pen for a bite of corn everyday 😉. Never been around pea straw🤷♂️🤷♂️. Merry Christmas.
We generally put our 2nd and 3rd calvers with our bred heifers in 1 group so they can get some better quality feed. Suprised that they wont eat the pea straw, wondering if either tubgrinding it with some alfalfa or pouring mollases on the bales would help create a taste? Cattle look good in spite of your challenge. Merry xmas to you and your family .
On a side note, not that I’m the biggest fan of buying molasses, but wonder if you could get ahold of a bit, dose a couple pea bales, and see if that will sucker them into eating it. Just a thought.
@@kellydorney3514 - have you ever put your molasses in the deep freeze for a couple of days to see how it pours and soaks into anything after that. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@sheilam4964this stuff actually has salt in it and is formulated to feed to cattle. Doesn’t freeze past -40. I call it molasses but it’s got other things like minerals and vitamins in it too.
Merry Christmas,beautiful scenery.🎄🎅👍🇨🇦
Thank you, Merry Christmas to you.
That’s crazy high protein bale. Last few years we’d be lucky to hit 9% in our alfalfa bales.
Caught it at the right time I guess. Surprised me too.

Ya I'm amazed at how hungry they will go and still not eat it.
That's a lot more snow than we have in St. Albert. Try some molasses on the straw.
Might just do that. Thanks
Nice looking cows

Merry Christmas!
And the same to you.
You need to get your self a mixer wagon so you can mix 2 bales together. 1 good bale and 1 peas straw
Yes. 100 head cow calf operation. Cost per cow?? Too much me thinks.

Try a couple of pea straw with liquid molasses dumped on it that's the only way I could ever get cows to eat pea straw that was dessicated.
Might just do that.
Nice looking heifers
Thanks 👍
Where do you get those windbreak/calf shelters? I see them in Canadian ranch videos but have never seen them for sale here in the US
Home made or local welding shops make them.
love these vids
Thanks for watching

Yep
Excellent idea, turn the bales on edge and pour the 40% molasses on it, letting soak in for a couple days.
