One of the most underrated albums ever!
Against was more metal and powerful than Roots, should have continued their success.
+applorag prucely if max would have sang on this, yes it eoukd have been a more powerfull album
Awesome album, OLD EARTH its my best song.
qMelOdicp: derrick is way different of Max, not better, not worst. Different. And on this album... I have to say that his voice perfectly corespondate with music.
This album is insanely great. The mix of sounds of several cultures is just awesome! and the voices just Brutal, like real tribes of the Amazonas claiming the revenge of their ancestors´ death. You can really fell the spirits of indigenous people shouting echoes of sorrow and anger........................just phenomenal
underrated album
as always, Andreas Kisser is a genius
Every sepultura album is a masterpiece
One of the best. It is older now but still feels fresh.
the drumming, dude...wtf? awesome!
+Renato Barbosa Igor Cavalera
+anahowana That's Iggor Fucking Cavalera
the best album. and the most underrated!
The more I see, the more I hate
The more I learn, the more I fake
The less I try, the less I get
The less I'm in, I'm never out
Don't do that / I knew it
Don't do that / I knew it, knew it
You don't know and I don't know
The circle seems the same
Falling down or standing up
I care what is against
Don't do that / I knew it
Don't do that / I knew it, knew it
What the fuck / You blew it
What the fuck / You blew it, blew it
Against!
Against!
CannibalZombieKiller : fuck yeah man :)
SEPULTURA PRA SEMPRE!!! 🤘😈🍺
Few years back I consumed a bunch of LSD and x-tacy and listen to every sepultura album and it started with this .. been a fan ever since
Ahah.
Perhaps the least appreciated Sepultura album, and in my opinion, one of their absolute best. The fuse elements of hardcore-tribal much more on this album than the newer stuff. This is my probably my 3rd favorite Sepultura album.
FizzSix i agree with you, some of the best drumming and riffing in this album
I've had this argument countless times with the Max faithful, who seem to be under the illusion that everything he's touched since Sep has been gold (so not true)... Yes, the post Max era of Sep albums has a lot of "meh" in it, but this album stands with the rest of the best, and is easily their most underappreciated album in the catalogue
This album got so much flack when it came out because Max wasn't on it, and even back then I really didn't understand the problem people had with the songs.
Seriously, the opening track "Against" is probably my F A V O R I T E Sepultura opening track of all times, even harkening back to MORBID VISIONS, and even BENEATH THE REMAINS. It has all the ingredients and sounds of what makes a great Sepultura, including this "non-Western" pulse and vibe, but it's short and full of punky 80s trash hardcore energy, and Derreck's voice completely blows everything out of the water. It's direct and ruthless yet oddly groovy. It's a statement song. As if that wasn't enough they follow it up with "Choke", which basically has all the qualities of the opening track but is more sludgy, slightly slower and complex with more "non-Western" and ethnic signatures and sections in it.
Then the bridge song, "Rumors", continues the sludge and "non-Western" rhythmic introduced in "Choke", yet it delves deeper into the slower registers while gorging in signature Sepultura guitar sounds. Derrick also goes more into this speech-like raw voice type of singing that Max used a lot on CHAOS A.D., all this compiled with these march-like parts delivered by Igor. Excellent stuff. What I like about AGAINST is that it's almost like a conceptual album sound-wise as "Old Earth" basically is the spiritual successor of the previous track - it takes all the character of "Rumors" and turns it into a cinematic, almost epic, piece that just oozes of everything that is great about Chaos A.D.
"Old Earth" brands out to "Floaters in Mud", which is a very uneven song to me - the first part is kind of a mixed bag with great ingredients that unfortunately don't match that well, and Derrick's voice starts sounding monotone despite the alteration between singing styles. However, once half the song has passed and the song enters this odd ethnic, almost positive sounding passage, "Floaters in Mud" transforms into this almost hypnotic creation that is ultra heavy - aggressive Japanese drums and echoing guitars. Now, we're almost at the midway mark of AGAINST, which is positioned by "Boycott". "Boycott" is a true Sepultura hit song in the vein of "Territory", "Roots Bloody Roots" etc. The following song, "Tribus", builds around Japanese drums and Igor's drumming and some excellent guitar play that emphasizes the non-Western vibe and signature of the song in the way only Sepultura can do it. It's an instrumental piece that serves as a reintroduction of the sound previous to "Boycott" / more sludgy, cinematic and dirty, yet with guitars that sound very ARISE to me. Now, the next song, "F.O.E.", is another instrumental that is centered around Igor's drumming and pretty much sounds like i could have, and should have, been a part of the previous song.
It's around this point that AGAINST starts to get a little uneven. The song "Reza" is a great trash-death metal hybrid completely submerged in Brazilian metal glory. Joao Gordo sings on this track, and his voice has a lot of the qualities of Max Cavalera of old, which makes this song feel like an odd ROOTS and ARISE hybrid with some MORBID VISIONS in it. But instead of continuing the style of "Reza", the next song - "Unconscious ", goes back to where "Floaters in Mud" left off. It's not a bad song at all, and it encapsulates the previous songs on the album, and Derrick shines, but it makes the previous track ("Reza") sound completely out of place.
Now, despite the dislodging moment between "Reza" and "Unconscious", we get one of the heaviest, most epic, thundering and instrumental slow-moving metal masterpieces ever - "Kamaitachi". It's a track centered around Japanese drumming and flute (Kodo Village) with Sepultura providing atmosphere and distortion to the track. It's like a big creaking ark plowing it's way through a doomsday typhoon tsunami. Very epic. But instead of following up the almost mythological and ancient battle feel of "Kamaitachi", we get two fast trash metal songs - "Drowned Out" and "Hatred Aside", the latter guested by Jason Newstead. Both songs are good by all means and fore some reason reminds me of Motorhead and early Metallica. However, "Hatred Aside" flawlessly steers the record back to the "non-Western", sludgy Sepultura sound, with all the epic and cinematic qualities that this album has offered so far. By the point the song ends it's impossible to imagine that it started as a fast trash song inspired by Motorhead and early Metallica.
AGAINST ends with "Tr3cermillenium" which is a beautiful mostly acoustic song with guitar, some kind of violin and various kinds of percussion, which makes it a beautiful and humble song in the same vein as "Kaiowaz", yet it has the same creaky wooden Japanese rumbling thunder feel as one of the previous tracks on this album, "Kamaitachi".
All in all, AGAINST displays some great song-writing and flawless soundscapes plus some amazing and rich instrumentality, both metal and "ethnic". My only criticism of AGAINST is the almost shuffled feel once the track "Reza" hits. It breaks the immersion and flow. I personally feel like they could have relegated "Reza" to become one of the bonus tracks, and although "Drowned Out" is a great trash song, they could've saved it for a later occasion.
To me this is probably my favorite Sepultura album as it grows on me every time I listen to it - it's on shared first place with BENEATH THE REMAINS to me.
Very good review . I was about 14 when I discovered this album and I couldn't believe it was the same band as on roots . I loved it
Great analisys 👏👏👏
With this one and the Soulfly debut we have two really crazy Roots successors. I love them both.
excellent album
Disco lindo!
excellent headbanger,great drums
meeting them was indeed a treat whilst enjoying downtown, max was a real buzz @ Subway bar
Saludos a mis amigos do brazil, Sepultura #1 po sempre.....
Obrigado, Brasil 666 terra do Trash Metal.

+Rafael Padilha (Lizzards') kkkkkkkk blz amigao
Wait, do you mean you spent ten a half years (55 min X 100000) listening to this?
The album has 25 years and since we spent an average of 1/3 of our lives sleeping, you'd need to listen to this almost nonstop since the release.
Based on this, I think you're lying, sir.
For me Roots And this Against album Are The best albums from Sepultura!!!!🤘🤘🤘
I think with perspective of years this album is very very good! I remember been very into Sepultura when Max left the band and listened this one and didn´t make it to me but now I listen to and gets more scense for me.
Holy fuck the Derrick era is actually underrated. This album is good, i also liked Machine Messiah
fucking awesome album. rumors and against should be played live
The beginning of the mighty Derick Green era!
Yeah, Against, It is a really good album, I loved the "Roots" album (and also Arise & Chaos AD), with their tribal and native Amazonian themes as its quite representative of Sepultura being from Brazil and living in/with the largest rainforest in the world which, as a botany enthusiast/tree hugger, is what drew me to them after my metal guitar playing friend played Arise for me. So after hearing Against I was very pleasantly surprised it was like a Roots II album and sounded so great even without Max! Yeah this album was very nicely done, more people should enjoy this music!
My opinion ,
the best album
BADASS!

Saludos …gran album@"
One of my favorito álbum
That album cover is fucking sick
Obviously unappreciated because of Max not being on it... still pretty solid. Not their best. I'd call it an almost entire departure from even where I thought they were going with Roots.
that's a good thing man I can say I LIKED roots but the direction was not sepultura they were going towards that nu metal shit their early albums were great shit classics even and I must say this album is great shit check out A-lex that album is a fuckin classic in its own right bud
still great.
Pancada !!!
The title track is better than their version of Polícia.
A lot better
Even more classic now Derrick does very well.
Love this shit.

Floaters in mud!!!!
the biginning of a succesfull interprise

Paulo or newsted? It doesn't matter, the bass sounds bad with both.
They do fine as bass players.
Not fancy but they do well with a pick. Put more respect on those names especially Paulo

Turmoil within a band can be quite confusing to fans ... truth of the matter being , I´m old enough to have seen Sepultura on their Chaos A.D. tour with Max ( Fudge Tunnel were opening up ) - yeah , wasn´t a bad concert per se , yet , Max was clearly inebriated af and somewhat limited the performance ... fast forward - "Roots " comes out and I hate its "nu metal" leanings to the core ... so I unplugged , then Max left and that´s when I lost absolute interest . That is until , out of pure chance , cause Slayer surprisingly took Sepultura on tour on their "Diabolus in Musica " tour , if I´m not mistaken . I must confess I had no interest in seeing Sepultura , was there for Slayer exclusively .
Surprise , surprise ! From the opener to the end of the show , that was a faaaar superior Sepultura than the other one I had seen a few years prior . Derrick, even back then , was much more "professional" than Max was . The whole band seemed galvanized by this line up change, as if Max was creating tension within the band ( which he quite clearly was ) ... this time I was satisfied with having seen Sepultura .
Slayer was just ... well ... Slayer - had seen them before with Machine Head ... dunno , saw them countless times with Hanneman only and they were always impeccable , as you all know . The ultimate Thrash Metal experience even .
Sepultura were never a good live band with Max and Igor.
