Currently these are the cheapest option for fast glass in a cinema housing, and they happen to perform really well. That said other budget options get the job done if you don't need T1.4. The Dulens set is an amazing deal. The Meike S35 set is also an amazing deal, incredibly cheap. I currently have the Meike set. I was going to switch to Dulens, but in the budget arena I just don't think it matters. All these brands don't hold much weight when it comes to booking jobs unless you have a set of Cooke, ARRI, or Zeiss. I am currently saving for the Cooke SP3 set, which I think will hold it's value pretty well as the weight is appealing for a lot of uses. Until then my Meike set will do just fine for anything where I am not renting.
Great points all around! I definitely agree, for LF these are without a doubt some of the best bang for buck fast lenses. Plenty of other really amazing solutions if you're willing to be a bit more flexible on coverage and focal length options! These for sure won't get you _hired_, but will very likely satisfy the bulk of work as an owner/op!
is it possible for @ryankao or @kofiyeboah to do a comparison of the nisi athena’s vs the dzo arles. i feel like these two lenses have a lot more similarities then the vespeds, and i would love to know if the price difference was worth it. i haven’t been able to find any videos that really compare the athena and arles, it would be super helpful!
sorry if i’ve commented this already, i think the comment got sent to the wrong video by accident, anyways; is it possible for you to do a more in depth comparison of image quality between the Nisi athenas and the dzo arles. i curious to see if the extra money is worth it, or if i should just use filters and post to soften things when needed?
Thank you for making a real review, not some overhyped youtube crap. I actually own the A set and your right these definitely pack a punch with the price.I think these will slowly creep its way to mid budget high end work. I do agree with you on the flares, but the more i use them the more i love the look of the flares. I also like how controlled focus breathing is on these.. Good Job Ryan
Really appreciate this! Couldn't agree more. Really happy with how the testing went overall and stick by my word in saying I'll be purchasing the full set!
Hahaha 4:18 guessing I’m outing all the bf’s out there 😂 Thanks for having me on some of these sets man. The Arles blew me away and definitely looking to use these on any projects I can in the future 🥲
They do look amazing, thanks for the review. For the price they offer such great value just like the Nisi Athenas. But considering that Arri has recently released the Enso lenses, man they have just lowered the entry point to Arri lenses by a huge chunk, albeit still quite expensive. Would love to see you add the Enso lenses into the mix for such lens comparisons if you ever get the chance.
We used the A set on a Music video last month, borrowed from the local dealer here, and they were great! Couldn't be happier with them. Image was high end and made our talent look amazing. You wouldn't guess that they are a "budget" cinema lens set. That being said about investment, I agree that for keeping them as a always on hand set for you to personally use is a worthwhile option. I don't really see them being popular as a rental investment because you can spend a little more on the daily fee and get the more well known and traditionally 'expensive' priced lenses. We have been/are considering maybe the 8 lens set, so minus the 40mm and 21mm. We used the Arri Signature Primes on the last music video project we did and those are so so light weight compared to the Arles, you can feel why you're paying more. The Arles are good but very heavy in comparison. I think the Enzo's are a better investment long term, especially with the rear filter choices, it's like 7 lens sets in one. Of course they are more expensive then the Arles but I think the demand will be higher as they are Arri, the build quality, serviceability, and also lens selection is greater. 10.5mm = insane. You can probably buy both sets of Arles for the price of two Enzos, but long term you'll make that money back. Will still consider the Arles though as an in-house set as we can't afford the Enzos right now, but yeah. Nice video :)
Why did you exclude 21mm and 40mm? Why didn't you use these distances? I'm just thinking about buying myself an Arles 40mm lens for interviews, for a better perspective of the frame.
@@human_support They have an eight lens set which doesn't include the 21mm and 40mm. They have a eight lens set which does. My choices would change if I got less lenses. I think if I were to get just three then maybe I'd opt for 21, 35, 50 to start. If we could customise the 8 set maybe I'd swap the 25mm for the 21mm as you could just crop in a bit, 25mm was nice but it was the widest we had so we wished for wider. 40 is so close to 35 that I'd just stick with the 35 and 50 instead! Hope that helps explain what I was saying before :)
@@AnotherCameraChannel Thanks for the answer. I understand your logic. I have a Zeiss Batis 40mm, and it's pretty good. Photos and videos taken with 40 seem to be something close to the eye in my opinion. I remember asking the GPT chat once) and he confirmed that about 38 mm is the perspective of a person's gaze if converted to full-frame optics. That's why I got interested in 40 mm 😁
The Vespids are hands down probably my top pick. I shot them for nearly 4 years and had nothing but great results.

Hey! Since you’ve been using the DZO Arles, have you noticed any build quality issues? (Like unusual noise, a stiffer focus ring, or any optical defects?) Just curious because I’ve seen some people on forums mention quality control concerns and frequent after-sales service. Would love to hear your thoughts!
I did have these on the mini LF open gate for some shots in the video! Admittedly that project was pretty high-key with a heavy grade, but generally they handled VERY well. Bit of vignetting on the 14 and 25
How do these compare to Lumix S Primes? Is there a huge noticeable difference? or is it only a difference a cork sniffer, wine gargler would notice especially after a color grade?
There are people who say that lenses are the best investment, over camera bodies. I tend to disagree. Buy an FX6 and rent the lenses that suit the character each job. If you hit a job where the client has an issue with using an FX6, rent an Alexa. If you don't have the budget for any of that, buy/borrow some cheap shit and learn your craft instead of obsessing over gear. Put it this way, if you're not working enough for a camera body like the FX6 being a smart purchase, the last thing you need is 15k worth of your own glass.
They held up surprisingly well to the Supremes and Cooke S7! Still noticeably less consistent performance in some areas, especially flares. But overall very competitive!
Depends of your line of work. I’m planning to get a mixture of the A and B set. I’ve got the 35 first, now I’m planning to get the 21 and 50, I’m not sure which first tough. (Maybe both and be a little broke for a couple of months XD)
Have you compared matched sets? That is, a matched set of primes will give you color consistency. An unmatched set will not. There is variation between how well manufacturers match their prime sets.
Gotta love this man. Starts his sales spiel with the word "honestly" a few times. Maybe to assuage his inner "honest" person. 😅 Then later on admits I am gonna get to keep a few of these 2500 dollar a piece lenses but "honestly" no money has exchanged hands and I am not a shill youtuber "honestly". Gissa break maan, it may work in China. Apologies for stereotyping you because of the oriental looks and you may instead be a born American person in which case you should use the word "honestly" more often as a God's given right...😅 Excellent content BTW....

I have no clue about cinema lenses, let alone lenses. This is like an introduction to me!
LOLOL 9:41 dead. Great review bro - yeah we both align on how we feel about these lenses. Some of the best optics to release this year
Literally my favorite part of the video HAHA
@@RyanKao I completely forgot about that.
It’s dope you have a balance view toward reviewing products! The DZO holds its own tbh and love how you’ve tested them on projects 🫡🔥
Love to see the comparison between Arles and Vespid in terms of image quality and value perspective. Love your videos!
Thanks man! It's been a fun experience testing these sets out!!
Excellent++ review on the Arles. Thank you!
Appreciate the kind words!
Great job, Ryan. I love all the detailed commentary and the example footage in various situations. Well done.

the fall off of the zeiss is perfect lol byt the dzo is great to but there is a difference
Those shots at 8:08 to 8:30 looked amazing! Were you shooting wide open at T1.4?
please review the simera -c lens kit
Great Video! If I could afford only one or two lenses. Which focal length would you get? 21mm and 40mm or a 35mm? What you use for interview mostly?
I got a 24-70 GMaster 2.8 and a 24 1.4 gm from Sony and want to transition with the vespid primes
would love to see these on a softer wider range sensor like the mini LF
