Tokyo Earthquake, main quake as it happened 2011/03/11 ~

  • Tokyo Earthquake, viewed from the third floor of my apartment in Minami-Asagaya, Suginami-ku Tokyo. This only covers about the last half of the intense stuff, total time lasted over three minutes. The motion started off as usual with side to side jerking but finished with more of a sinking and rising feeling with some side to side motion as well. All in all it was a huge jolt of adrenaline and I'm thankful my friends here are all safe.
    *The siren is a useful relic from Japan's history. Used to alert people to air raids or bombing, the city now employs the system to broadcast emergency messages to citizens. It also serves to play the city's song at 5pm every night.
    *Media* This video may be linked to or used for broadcasting under the condition that credit be given to "Dolan O'Neill" and that you contact me of your useage.
    東京都杉並区成田東5丁目 rough address of where the video was taken.

    OMG man...the quake itself was scary but the siren was very haunting afterwards. Glad you are ok. Watching footage like this makes me realise how much we take things for granted in Ireland. We complain about a rainy day... Cant imagine being in the middle of a quake and what thats like!

    Very good description in the information you gave together with your video. Thanks! It seems that you first experience Pwaves, also compression waves explaning the side to side jerking movement. Then comes Swaves, also shearing waves, which travel just a little bit slower than Pwaves. Shearing waves add a 'up and down' motion. You experienced a live geological class about wave propagation in the ground! Happy to see that everything went well for you at the end :)

    DUUUDE Iwould've been screaming and dancing chaotically around the room saying random interjections and short random "prayers" if that happened to me. But you're super calm and even took the time to film it and laugh at the shaking objects O.O That will never be me!

    My uncle in Asakusa said it was eerily quiet after the quake hit... no cars, buses, trains, etc. I can remember hugging the floor when a particularly strong quake hit the Kanto region years ago. You feel totally helpless... can't walk, stand, or do much of anything but ride it out.

    Thanks! How interesting. I didn't know this. I was in Japan for a week, but did not notice these city songs. I did, however, notice that each pedestrian crossing had a song that went with it :)

    What is the sound warning for? The Tsunami? Do they have that in America?

  • @dolamyte
    @dolamyte  12 років тому

    I don't know much about the song itself, but each ward and usually city has it's own song much like it's own crest. The song plays every night at 5pm though on some nights during the year it plays at 4pm. Each town seems to determine when to play their own songs at either of these two times. There are never any words, just a simple melody that I'm sure was created several decades ago and remains unchanged!

    @gliderrider001 I spent weeks leading search and rescue missions, delivering kerosene, food/water, clothing/blankets, portable showers, ground intelligence analysis and planning and also acted as an interpreter for an entire unit. We got Sendai Airport up and running, saved lives and lively hoods all while I ate the worst food, never showered and was never warm enough to feel my extremities. I haven't even mentioned other activities I've done, what have you done to support Japan?

  • @dolamyte
    @dolamyte  12 років тому

    @gliderrider001 I'm assuming you live in Japan as well and to address your "you're making us all look bad" comment; The evening after the quake I worked with a Bio-Med company in Tokyo to procure Specialised water filters from New Zealand at great expense to ourselves (each one was over $500 x +500), going all over Tokyo and Kansai preparing and translating them. A couple days later I volunteered for reactivation back into the Marines and participated in Operation Tomodachi.

    Those sirens are eerie... They remind me of a zombie video game and Jurassic Park.
    And nothing is going to happen in 2012. The Mayans just got bored, and stopped adding dates.
    To the video creator; kudos for courage!. I wouldn't have been that calm.

    Having lived through many earthquakes here on the west coast, the largest being a 7.0, I can tell you how scary they can be.
    A 5.0 will get your attention A 6.0 will make stuff fall off the shelves. A 7.0 will move furniture, cars, and make you wonder if it's your time, but a 9.0?! I can't even imagine the force and the terror of seeing the very world you stand on twist and distort. Must be very surreal.
