Actually, sharing the wonderful resources is what will save them. Hiding places means that they're less likely to enter custodianship, lacking visibility and apparent traffic; it also means that catastrophic damage/vandalism/etc may go unreported for a period of time if nobody visits as well as the location isn't shared in the documentation/chronicling of the experience. In my experience, and I think that you'll find yours is consistent, there is a perceptible "trash line" where you can tell most casual tourists sort of give up and head back, rarely going much further. All those locations inside that line are fairly well known, so no reason to hide them and plenty of reasons to get footage and document as they're the most likely to have higher management and clean up/restoration costs; the locations outside the line aren't as well known and the line is there as a natural demarcation boundary, so it's only the few who would venture past anyway and the great percentage of them will be of like mind, understand the rules to not only preserve our resources but keep themselves alive, and looking to spend more focused time on routes instead of simply meandering around in the wilderness (not really a great idea unless that's your goal, you're experienced, and you're prepared) wasting energy and stomping all over creation "just because". Sharing information is quite literally the BEST way to raise awareness and attract far more people of a conservationist mindset than those of "cool a new place to drive for hours to only to trash it"; most acts of casual maliciousness are of opportunity not design - never assume malevolence when ignorance is in the room.
Bro... What? This is insane. I know how much work went into this and it shows. Incredible gift to the public and OnX. The latter better be writing a BIG check. 👏🏻
It was great reliving this trip! Such an amazing adventure brother. Thanks for all your work plotting the route and filming it! Can’t wait to return to the trail very soon!
You drove near my house east of roseburg. I've been all over Oregon except the Owyhee area and I'm looking forward going there after seeing your video! Thanks for sharing this adventure!
That's awesome. I really loved that part of the drive, even if it was on pavement. I've thought about re-routing that section for more dirt, but honestly I enjoyed the variety.
A secret route going unused is how it will eventually cease to exist. If you wanna preserve the route and all that surrounds it, then you gotta share it. Think no further back than when you were evading the storm in the dessert. You were on a road so covered in sage brush that it felt like you were cutting a new road. Nobody was using it, and that route no longer exists. Great filming, and storytelling.
Now you guys need to do a north south Oregon BDR. I’ve seen all the sections of your videos and what a great job you guys have done. Keep up the good work and hopefully one day soon. I’ll be able to make it out there too drive your route.
I actually scouted a North Oregon Route, but I really want to work on my Idaho route before doing another Oregon trip. I hope you get to try this route someday, it's really beautiful.
@ I would love to see the area where you guys live. I’ve always wanted to see Idaho. I have seen some beautiful pictures from there. But for now I’m stuck on the other side of the Mississippi River in the Ohio river valley.
Incredible work! Thank you for sharing things like this. There is enough filth put out into the world via the internet. We need more content creators like you.
As a snowmobiler I knew you were on a snowmobile trail after I saw the orange diamond with the black arrow pointing right on the tree. Time on the video, 42:03 to 42:10.
Great video. I just finished watching and didn't realize it had been over an hour watching this! Captivating to say the least. I cannot wait to add this trail to my list of overland routes to make my own adventures on.
Thanks for sharing a link to the route. I saved it to my OnX account and will be trying this as it looks fantastic. I greatly appreciate your content, Will and I am excited to see what you do in 2025. ❤️
I know how much work goes into doing this. Thank you for sharing. I use GAIA, but to drive this route is worth paying a subscription. At least for my trip this year, who knows, maybe I will like OnX better. Gracias again!
Really? We weren’t there for too long…had dinner at Mexican place in old downtown. And we stopped for supplies on our way back to Diamond lake. It’s a great town.
Hey Will hopefully we’ll see you out on the trail at an event again; we’re actually in the process of looking for land and eastern Oregon and southern Oregon are options. We are looking at, hopefully something that is adjacent to public plans and it has enough acreage that we can host other Overlanders and nomads.
For Chris, just so you know Jeep products are equipped with multitudes of proximity sensors. Mine will often go off and take me out of drive or reverse if the jeep thinks I’m within proximity of something; usually I am not and it’s just a dirty sensor. But that’s why we drive Jeeps so we can have fun dealing with the mystery gremlins in the electrical system.
That's interesting. We didn't look at the issue that way at all. We just figured it the fluid shifted and caused it to slip. I think this issue has been fixed by Chris, but I honestly haven't asked him about it..we're recording a new video podcast this weekend, I'll bring it up.
We did. I'm hoping folks will use this route as a baseline to find places like that. We really wanted it to end in Florence because of our family history there and the fact that you can drive on the beach (with permits). Gold beach also looks incredible.
paused the video... what size tires you guys running? Just comparing to see challenges I may face with clearance. I'm on 35x12.5x17 JLUR. No issues here in Ontario Canada year round. Love your videos Will!! Cheers Fellas
Several years ago my wife and I were searching out a Geocache near the old Slide Mountain Lookout site. The road was impassable due to dead trees from a wildfire. We walked the last section. My wife cringes every time we drive past on the highway below. By the time we returned to our rig our arms and legs were a bloody mess. I keep threaten to return but to save my marriage I have not done so. In the past we have found several herds of wild horses. A couple years ago we camped at the Mt Thielsen trail head. We woke t0 15 inches fresh snow.
I really want to go back and just camp up there for a few days clearing the trail..that actually might be a cool way to organize a group trip...Great story - really cool to hear someone else has been up there too...10-15 inches is a LOT of snow to wake up to. I've not had that experience, but I can imagine it was but beautiful and problematic.
Just like Nate's videos... this looks like an adventure, but not a fun day. Every snow video is same...one recovery after another.... I'm like dude that looks miserable 😂. Sorry man.... even 40's don't turn trucks into snowmobiles ha ha
There were definitely moments where I was not having fun...when I slid off the road...without a winch (it has one now)...I was pretty pissed at myself for dragging my feet on choosing a front bumper (winch had been sitting in my garage for 3 months). But it was an adventure!
Thank you! The fire pit I use is called a Pop Up Pit: amzn.to/4a5nuMI I've used the crap out of it and it's done really well. I just replaced it after 4 years of very heavy use.

More people need to remember this. Excellent point!

Have this route saved for my trip this summer to come and do the IDBDR!! Thank you for the time and effort you guys put in to building this route!!
Awesome. Hope you have a blast!!! I'm partial to Idaho...but this Oregon route is really good :)
Love this video Will, great job and great soundtrack!!!!!! Love Oregon for the natural beauty!!!!

Hoping to add an Idaho route this year. Not sure if it will be on OnX or not, but I'm making the route regardless.
This is an awesome adventure, inspiring a trip for sure. Thanks for sharing!
Will, I love your humility and have been there, done that as well. Another great video!
Thank you so much!

Absolutely beautiful area! Thanks for sharing.

You made the right choice 👍👍
Beautiful pictures -thanks
Clear cuts everywhere
We saw a ton of that in Western Oregon.
I love these videos!! 🥰
Thank you!
Living this! Thank you so much!

Damn, i need to get out there. Amazing video.
Thank you! Oregon is amazing.
To each their own, but that snow driving mess doesn't even look fun. No thanks. lol Awesome trip. great info and great work guys! 🤘🏼

You guys missed Bear Camp road from Galice Road to Gold Beach. This time of year it's impossible but a good summer/fall trip.
We did. I'm hoping folks will use this route as a baseline to find places like that. We really wanted it to end in Florence because of our family history there and the fact that you can drive on the beach (with permits). Gold beach also looks incredible.

You'd enjoy the Mosquito festival in Paisley sometime.
I read about that…looks like a lot of fun!
Keeps jumping out of drive on the steep parts.
It's a jeep thing. Gotta love it.
Or get a LC. 😂
Jeeps keep it interesting on the trail that's for sure!
